Statistics show left-handed people are more likely to be schizophrenic, alcoholic, delinquent, dyslexic, and have Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, as well as mental disabilities. They're also more likely to die young and get into accidents. So if evolutionary theory dictates survival of the fittest, why do lefties still exist?

According to new theories, what left-handed people (and other animals) may lack in fitness, they make up by being different.

Researchers in France recently took an interest in the disproportionately high number of left-handed athletes who thrive in sports involving direct one-on-one contact, such as baseball (think Babe Ruth), tennis (think John McEnroe) and boxing (think Oscar de la Hoya or the fictional Rocky Balboa).

Charlotte Faurie and Michel Raymond of the University of Montpellier in France figured the same reason so many left-handed people are successful in such sports could also explain a possible higher success rate among lefties in primitive combat.

This means that, back in the days when fighting was an important part of survival and winning mates, the rare left-hander may have come out on top more often.

Watch That Left Hook

Here's the thinking: Most left-handed people would be practiced in fighting right-handed people (since right-handed people make up the majority), while most right-handed fighters would not be as prepared to fight someone who favors their left side. Advantage: lefties.

"The fact that left-handers are less common means they have a surprise effect," said Faurie.

To prove their theory, Faurie and Raymond surveyed nine primitive societies in five separate continents. Through a mix of direct observation and existing data, they estimated the number of left-handed people within each population. They also looked at murder rates, thinking that those communities with higher murder rates might favor populations with more left-handed people. The more violence, the more chances lefties would have at issuing their unexpected left hook, or other such weapon, and come out on top.

Among these samples, they found strong support for the idea that, at least in primitive societies with higher levels of violence, lefties thrive.

For example, when they singled out the Dioula of Burkina Faso in West Africa, where the murder rate was only 0.013 murders per 1,000 residents each year, they found only 3.4 percent of the population were left-handers. Data from the Eipo of Indonesia, meanwhile, where there are three murders per 1,000 people each year, show 27 percent of the population is left-handed.

Other research is suggesting that humans aren't the only species who have minorities of certain side-favoring individuals. The equivalent of lefties has been observed in chimpanzees, toads, even among schools of fish.

Favoring one side — a result of something called lateralization of the brain — was once thought to be a uniquely human trait linked to language. The ability to speak comes mostly from left regions of the brain, so the assumption was this would correspond with increased motor control on the opposite, or right side. In motor control, activity on one side corresponds to the opposite side of the brain. So this could explain why about 70 percent to 90 percent of people are right-handed.

But lately, researchers who study animals have been poking holes in that idea.

William Hopkins, a psychologist at Emory University's Yerkes National Primate Research Center, has found most chimpanzees use their right hands for a number of functions, from throwing a ball to scooping peanut butter from a tube. Furthermore, he and his colleagues have linked this handedness to the KNOB, an area of the brain associated with motor activity, not language.

Hopkins further points out that chimps don't have language, so why would there be a majority of right-handed chimps? As among humans, being in a minority when it comes to handedness has its advantages.

"The advantage is at the individual level," said Giorgio Vallortigara, a psychologist at the University of Trieste in Italy. "The advantage is observed only until the minority group remains a minority. If the number of individuals that do not share the side preference that most do increases, then the advantage is lost."

Swimming Their Own Way

Vallortigara has studied how this works in certain schools of fish. Some fish swim in large groups, or shoals. Traveling in a pack provides individuals with extra protection from predators. Most of the fish in the group share the same tendency to keep an eye out on one side or the other for predators and to flee in a particular direction if a threat is seen.

Minority-sided fish, meanwhile, are likely to watch the other way and turn and flee in the opposite direction...

Dear Yahoo!:
How many people do you have to kill to be considered a serial killer?
Laura
New York, New York

Dear Laura:
The public's strange fascination with these monsters goes back to the days of Jack the Ripper -- possibly even further. Quantifying what it takes to be considered a serial killer is about as morbid a question as we've ever tackled. As it turns out, the number of murders committed is just one of several criteria that must be met before a murderer is classified as a serial killer.

First, to answer your immediate question, the alleged killer must have committed three or more murders, according to several sites. Second, there must be a cooling off period between the slayings, when the killer returns to "normal behavior" to avoid suspicion. And third, "there is frequently -- but not always -- a sexual element to their crimes." Serial killers are often confused with mass murderers. Whereas serial killers commit their acts over a long period of time, mass murderers kill many people at once.

There are two types of serial killers according to the FBI -- organized and disorganized. Depending on the type of killer, there may or may not be a motive or logic to their criminal pattern. Organized serial killers plot their killings carefully and are typically of above average intelligence while disorganized serial killers act far more impulsively and as a result, are usually captured far more quickly.

January 25, 5:32 a.m. EST -- The Full Wolf Moon. Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages. It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon After Yule. In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon.

February 23, 11:54 p.m. EST -- The Full Snow Moon. Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and hence to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.

March 25, 3:58 p.m. EST -- The Full Worm Moon. In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. This is also the Paschal Full Moon; the first full Moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the Paschal Moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed two days later on Sunday, March 27.

April 24, 6:06 a.m. EDT -- The Full Pink Moon. The grass pink or wild ground phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and -- among coastal tribes -- the Full Fish Moon, when the shad came upstream to spawn.

May 23, 4:18 p.m. EDT -- The Full Flower Moon. Flowers are abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon.

June 22, 12:14 a.m. EDT -- The Full Strawberry Moon. Known to every Algonquin tribe. Europeans called it the Rose Moon.

July 21, 7:00 a.m. EDT -- The Full Buck Moon, when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms being now most frequent. Sometimes also called the Full Hay Moon. The Moon will also be at perigee later this day, at 4:00 p.m., at a distance of 221,928 mi./357,158 km miles from Earth. Very high ocean tides can be expected from the coincidence of perigee with full Moon.

August 19, 1:53 p.m. EDT -- The Full Sturgeon Moon, when this large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon because the moon rises looking reddish through sultry haze, or the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

September 17, 10:01 p.m. EDT -- The Full Harvest Moon. Traditionally, this designation goes to the Full Moon that occurs closest to the Autumnal (Fall) Equinox. In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but every third year it occurs in October. At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the Moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, and wild rice -- the chief Indian staples -- are now ready for gathering.

October 17, 8:14 a.m. EDT -- The Full Hunter’s Moon. With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it is time to hunt. Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, also other animals, which have come out to glean and can be caught for a thanksgiving banquet after the harvest. A very minor (6.8% coverage) partial eclipse of the Moon will take place between 7:34 and 8:32 a.m. EDT and will be visible from western and central sections of North America.

November 15, 7:58 p.m. EST -- The Full Beaver Moon. Time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon come from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. Also called the Frosty Moon.

December 15, 11:15 a.m. EST -- The Full Cold Moon; among some tribes, the Full Long Nights Moon. In this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and the nights are at their longest and darkest. Also sometimes called the Moon before Yule (Yule is Christmas, and this time the Moon is only just before it). The term Long Night Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long and the Moon is above the horizon a long time. The midwinter full Moon takes a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite to the low Sun.

Did Animals Sense Tsunami Was Coming?

Before giant waves slammed into Sri Lanka and India coastlines ten days ago, wild and domestic animals seemed to know what was about to happen and fled to safety.

According to eyewitness accounts, the following events happened:

• Elephants screamed and ran for higher ground.

• Dogs refused to go outdoors.

• Flamingos abandoned their low-lying breeding areas.

• Zoo animals rushed into their shelters and could not be enticed to come back out.

The belief that wild and domestic animals possess a sixth sense—and know in advance when the earth is going to shake—has been around for centuries.

Wildlife experts believe animals' more acute hearing and other senses might enable them to hear or feel the Earth's vibration, tipping them off to approaching disaster long before humans realize what's going on.

The massive tsunami was triggered by a magnitude 9 temblor off the coast of northern Sumatra island on December 26. The giant waves rolled through the Indian Ocean, killing more than 150,000 people in a dozen countries.

Relatively few animals have been reported dead, however, reviving speculation that animals somehow sense impending disaster.

Ravi Corea, president of the Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society, which is based in Nutley, New Jersey, was in Sri Lanka when the massive waves struck.

Afterward, he traveled to the Patanangala beach inside Yala National Park, where some 60 visitors were washed away.

The beach was one of the worst hit areas of the 500-square-mile (1,300-square-kilometer) wildlife reserve, which is home to a variety of animals, including elephants, leopards, and 130 species of birds.

Corea did not see any animal carcasses nor did the park personnel know of any, other than two water buffalos that had died, he said.

Along India's Cuddalore coast, where thousands of people perished, the Indo-Asian News service reported that buffaloes, goats, and dogs were found unharmed.

Flamingos that breed this time of year at the Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary in India flew to higher ground beforehand, the news service reported.

Strange Animal Behavior

Accounts of strange animal behavior have also started to surface.

About an hour before the tsunami hit, Corea said, people at Yala National Park observed three elephants running away from the Patanangala beach.

World Wildlife Fund, an organization that leads international efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats, has satellite collars on some of the elephants in the park.

A spokeswoman said they plan to track the elephants on that fateful day to verify whether they did move to higher ground. She doesn't know, though, when the satellite data will be downloaded and analyzed.

Corea, a Sri Lankan who emigrated to the United States 20 years ago, said two of his friends noticed unusual animal behavior before the tsunami.

One friend, in the southern Sri Lankan town of Dickwella, recalls bats frantically flying away just before the tsunami struck. Another friend, who lives on the coast near Galle, said his two dogs would not go for their daily run on the beach.

"They are usually excited to go on this outing," Corea said. But on this day they refused to go and most probably saved his life.

Alan Rabinowitz, director for science and exploration at the Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society in New York, says animals can sense impending danger by detecting subtle or abrupt shifts in the environment.

"Earthquakes bring vibrational changes on land and in water while storms cause electromagnetic changes in the atmosphere," he said. "Some animals have acute sense of hearing and smell that allow them to determine something coming towards them long before humans might know that something is there."

Did Humans Lose Their Sixth Sense?

At one time humans also had this sixth sense, Rabinowitz said, but lost the ability when it was no longer needed or used.

Joyce Poole is director of the Savanna Elephant Vocalization Project, which has its headquarters in Norway. She has worked with African elephants in Kenya for 25 years. She said the reports of Sri Lanka's elephants fleeing to higher ground didn't surprise her.

Research on both acoustic and seismic communication indicates that elephants could easily pick up vibrations generated from the massive earthquake-tsunami, she said.

Poole has also experienced this firsthand.

"I have been with elephants during two small tremors, and on both occasions the elephants ran in alarm several seconds before I felt the tremor," she said.

One of the world's most earthquake-prone countries is Japan, where devastation has taken countless lives and caused enormous damage to property. Researchers there have long studied animals in hopes of disc...

Inside the Mind of a Suicide Bomber

There appears to be an almost endless supply of fighters willing to die for their cause in Iraq. Suicide bombers have routinely struck U.N. buildings, hotels, and checkpoints since the end of major combat in the country.

The weapon of choice is usually an explosive-packed automobile, but explosive vests have been used as well. U.S. intelligence officials say the majority of the bombers are not foreign fighters, as many believe. [read more]

Why use winamp classics skin?

Running Winamp in Classic skin mode drastically decreases the startup time of Winamp, while increasing overall speed. While Modern/Freeform skins typically come equipped with extra functions and are oftentimes more visually impressive, you pay for that all with longer load times and more CPU. Classic skins can usually be differentiated from their Modern counterparts by their rectangular shape. Winamp's default Classic can be selected by going to Options > Skins > Winamp Classic. There is a Classic skin that closely resembles the look of the default Modern skin, for those of you wish to use that instead You can choose not to have support for Modern skins at all by unchecking the feature when installing.

AK-47

Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947 g.

The AK-47 (for Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947 g.) is an assault rifle designed in 1947 by Mikhail Kalashnikov, produced by Russian arms manufacturer [IZH], and used in many nations during the Cold War. Compared to the rifles used in World War II, the AK-47 was lighter and more compact, with a shorter range, a smaller 7.62 x 39 mm cartridge, and a higher rate of fire. The lower recoil of the cartridge and the rifle's automatic design permitted practical fully-automatic fire, thus making it one of the first assault rifles.

It also has a legendary reputation for ruggedness, reliability, and ease of field maintenance. Inexpensive to manufacture, the AK-47 is the most widespread of all small arms, with 50-80 million weapons having been produced. Despite its official deprecation by the Russian military, the weapon and its derivatives are still widely manufactured and used, especially throughout the Third World.

Ancient Ape Discovered—Last Ape-Human Ancestor?

::more photo

In Spain scientists have discovered 13-million-year-old fossils of new species of ape. The species may have been the last common ancestor of humans and all great apes living today. (See pictures of the new ape species.)

The great apes—which later gave rise to humans and which now include orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas—are thought to have diverged from the lesser apes about 11 to 16 million years ago. Today's lesser apes include the gibbons.

The new species was christened Pierolapithecus catalaunicus, after the village, Els Hostalets de Pierola, and region, Catalonia, where it was found. Like great apes and humans, Pierolapithecus catalaunicus, had a stiff lower spine and other special adaptations for climbing trees.

Protecting Yourself Against Date Rape

The best defense against date rape is to try to prevent it whenever possible. A girl can help to protect herself from possible date rape by:

Avoiding secluded places (even his room or hers) with someone until she knows him well and he has earned her trust.
Not spending time alone with someone who makes her feel uneasy or uncomfortable. This means following her instincts and removing herself from situations that she doesn't feel good about.
Staying sober. Many date rapes involve drugs or alcohol, and sometimes a date might slip drugs like rohypnol or GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) into a drink to make a person more vulnerable.
Learning to say "no" in a definite way. Girls should say it clearly when they need to, and guys should understand that "no" means "no" - it is not an invitation to try to persuade someone to have sex.
Taking self-defense courses. These can build confidence and teach valuable physical techniques a person can use to get away from an attacker.

And of course, even if a girl does use poor judgment, has a drink, gets herself into an uncomfortable situation, or doesn't yell "NO" loudly enough, a guy still never has the right to use force or coercion.

The measure of power under the hood of a Corvette, Corvair, or Yugo, was established by Scottish engineer James Watt, often credited with inventing the steam engine. To convince potential buyers of the value of his steam engine, he devised a way to rate its power by comparing it to the work done by horses -- the usual source of industrial muscle in his day.

Watt watched horses at work, although there's some disagreement about his actual methods. He may have observed ponies lifting coal in a coal mine or horses working in a mill. He concluded that a horse could lift 550 pounds at the rate of one foot per second. In other words, it could lift 33,000 pounds one foot per minute. And that's the figure we use today: one unit of horsepower equals 33,000 foot-pounds per minute.

Regardless of his methods, the term "horsepower" stuck. Two hundred years after Watt coined the word, it's used to sell everything from lawnmowers to garbage disposals.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2004 -- Kevin Ngo, a Baylor University graduate now studying for the law school entrance exam, isn't leaving anything to chance. He is seeking help from a pill that's meant to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

"There is something about Adderall that makes you concentrate, focus and makes whatever you're studying more interesting," he said.

More than 6.4 million prescriptions for Adderall were filled last year. Some of these prescriptions are being used by students seeking a quick fix for studying.

A Yale University junior said Adderall helped him read the 576-page novel "Crime and Punishment" and write a 15-page paper — all in 30 hours.

"In earlier generations, people would take NoDoz and get themselves high on caffeine and that sort of thing," said the student, who asked not to be identified. "This is more efficient than that."

This student and others say they get the stimulant from fellow students who have legitimate prescriptions.

"I would say two-thirds of the student body has tried it for studying," one student wrote in a college chat room.

Potential Risks

But Adderall does not work for everyone, and there may be risks involved for those who take it without consulting a doctor first. Doctors say it can increase heart rate, affect blood pressure and cause insomnia.

"It's an FDA-approved medication, so many people perceive it as safe. Whether it is or not for them to take is another issue," said Dr. Eric Heiligenstein, head of psychiatry for the University of Wisconsin health services.

Still, high school students are increasingly turning to the drug to help with SATs, according to Lisa Jacobson, CEO of the tutoring company Inspirica.

"The reason it has come to my attention is that the parents ask me should they get it for their kid, and my answer is absolutely not. The answer is no," she said. "It is cheating with a capital 'C.' "

Heiligenstein says Adderall is an academic steroid.

"It's a very interesting parallel to what happens in athletics," he said. "In other words, [it's] why athletes on the starting line of a race will look around and say, 'Who's using and who's not. Do they have an unfair advantage?' "

Ngo doesn't think taking the drug gives him an unfair edge.

"I mean, it's not like I take Adderall and just expected to magically get smarter," he said.

More students may now feel they have no choice but to take the drug.

"It's a situation where the bar is now raised, because so many people are doing it, to the point where, at some point, it is going to become the price of admission to get into a certain school," said Jacobson.

Ngo admits he now feels he needs Adderall to do well academically. He's found a doctor who has written him his very own prescription.

ABC News' Lisa Stark filed this report for World News Tonight.

This lyrics is related to my life 2 weeks ago (sorry it's in my language)

Wings - Padamkan Lampu Tidurmu

Terikat dua tangan bagai nasib tawanan
Terkunci mata mulut peluh tumpah dibadan
Kau paksa ku tunduk berlutut sebelum kau menghukum
Kau mungkin tak percaya aku ada pendinding
Seribu satu doa hulubalang yang kadim

Jangan... jangan teruskannya selagi hatimu tak cukup zalim
Jangan... jangan kotakannya selagi hukuman tidak setanding

Dengan serapah semangat tujuh milikku
Akan ku tukarkan dunia menjadi syurga si gelendangan
Tiada tangisan angkara dusta tiada diri berbeza
Diam saja bersyukurlah

Padamkan lampu tidur tutup mata fikirkan
Di dalam gelap engkau masih mampu melihat benar
Padamkan lampu tidur nyalakan lampu hati
Hitam dan putih tetap indah bila kau kenal
Oh warnanya...

Spider - Relaku Pujuk

Ku dikejar bayang bayang resah
Bila hatimu masih tak berubah
Enggan di punya dan di penjara
Belaian cintaku ini

Aku bukanlah lelaki yang tewas
Bisa menyembah walau ku di tolak
Biar di uji kanan dan kiri
Kau kan tetap ku miliki

C/o
Tiada lafas yang lebih agung
Kalimah cintamu yang ku tunggu tunggu
Biar jasadku yang menanggung
Permainan darimu rela ku pujuk

Janganlah kau salahkan aku
Terus memburu menawan cintamu
Daku percaya sedikit masa
Kau kecundang akhirnya

Usahlah kau bersedih di hadapanmu aku hadir
Memadam resah dan curiga dari hatimu oh...
Apakah kali ini bisa kau tolak dan berlari
Setelah aku menanamkan azimatku

Tiada lafas yang lebih agung
Kalimah cintamu yang ku tunggu tunggu
Biar jasadku yang menanggung
Permainan darimu rela ku pujuk ...

REFORMASI

Malaysian Vows to Push Reforms : Anwar, Now Free, Wants Fair Elections, Independent Judiciary

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 3 -- Former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim vowed to push for democratic reforms in Malaysia, including freer news media, fair elections and an independent judiciary, as he savored his first full day of freedom in six years Friday after his conviction on sodomy charges was overturned.

In an interview from his home in an affluent Kuala Lumpur suburb, Anwar smiled, laughed and looked far more relaxed than during a tense appearance Thursday, when Malaysia's highest court reversed his conviction.

"It's an indescribable feeling to be among family and friends," said Anwar, who enjoyed a breakfast with his children and saw them off to school.

Anwar said he would never have been released from prison if his former boss, Mahathir Mohamad, was still in power. He praised Mahathir's successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, for allowing the ruling.

Anwar said his priority now was to push through reforms and that he would work with an opposition alliance that includes a party headed by his wife, Wan Azizah Ismail.

Anwar maintained that a "silent majority" supported him.

The ruling that freed him came exactly six years after Mahathir, a combative figure who transformed Malaysia into one of Asia's wealthiest countries but was long accused of dismissing democratic procedures, fired Anwar as his heir apparent in a power struggle.

Anwar then led anti-Mahathir demonstrations and was arrested on Sept. 18, 1998.

Digital attacks on Winamp use 'skins' for camouflage

Beware of wolves in llama's clothing.

That's the lesson for Winamp users, after a group of security researchers discovered that spyware makers are using a flaw in the way the multimedia software loads graphical themes, or skins, to infect PCs with their wares. The digital music player--made by America Online subsidiary Nullsoft, whose informal mascot is the llama--improperly allows the skin files to run programs.

The flaw is being used by some spyware makers to infect people's computers with their illicit programs, according to another group of researchers, at French company K-Otik Security. The attack had been used to spread spyware among Internet relay chat users, infecting a computer after the victim clicked on a Web address that appeared in the chat window.

"We received several reports from users who were hacked after clicking on a link distributed on several IRC (Internet relay chat) channels," said Chaouki Bekrar, a consultant and co-founder of K-Otik. Clicking on the link infected the users' computers and sent out additional instant messages, Bekrar said.

The vulnerability is the latest flaw to arrive without warning. Knowledge of such flaws--known in technical circles as zero-day, or 0-day, vulnerabilities--can spread widely before the software developer can even fix the problem. A similar issue in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser enabled spyware intruders to load software onto the PCs of visitors to an intruder's Web site. The seriousness of the flaw convinced Microsoft to release an early fix for the problem.

A representative of America Online said the company had been made aware of the problem but that a fix had not yet been created. "We're looking into the reports and will provide more information, as necessary, at the appropriate time," the representative said.

Security information provider Secunia rated the vulnerability "extremely critical," its highest rating for software threats, and said the threat extends beyond instant messaging to any skin downloaded through a browser link or e-mail link.

"A malicious Web site using a specially crafted Winamp skin to place and execute arbitrary programs" could take control of a victim's computer, the company said in a Wednesday advisory. "With Internet Explorer, this can be done without user interaction."

But the security site suggests a simple solution to the problem in its advisory: "Use another product."

America Online could be forgiven for not appreciating the advice.

All About Marijuana

AKA:
Pot, dope, grass, weed, Mary Jane (spiderman's girlfriend?), chronic, reefer, ganja, dam, kaya, doobie, keef.

A lot of American teens, for a lot of different reasons, seem to have formed the idea that marijuana is a pretty harmless drug, not nearly as bad for you as the "hard" drugs like cocaine or heroin.

What is it?
Marijuana is a green or gray (deviantART colour) mixture of dried, shredded flowers and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. It can be eaten in certain foods or smoked. It is an illegal drug.

What does it do?
The effects vary from person to person depending on how strong the marijuana is, how it's taken and whether other drugs or alcohol are involved. At first, pot can make people feel relaxed, in a good mood and even silly. Users will likely experience dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, some loss of coordination and poor sense of balance, and slower reaction times, along with intoxication. Blood vessels in the eye will expand causing the red-eye effect. NIDA Smoking marijuana may impair short-term memory while people are using the drug. This happens because all forms of marijuana contain THC(delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the main active chemical in marijuana, which alters the way the brain works. After a few minutes, paranoia or anxiousness may set in, then intense hunger (a.k.a. the munchies). Finally, sleepiness. For some people, marijuana raises blood pressure slightly and can double the normal heart rate. This effect can be greater when other drugs are mixed with marijuana.

Who uses it?
Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the United States. Fewer than one in four high school seniors say they are current users. Between 1991 and 2001, the number of 8th graders who used marijuana doubled from one in ten to one in five. Monitoring the Future, 1975-1999. What would you do if someone offered you pot? Take a trial run through our scenarios so you'll be prepared.

Marijuana affects memory, judgment and perception even in the short-term, as was found in a study conducted by Pope and Yurgelun-Todd published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It can mess you up in school, in sports or clubs, or with your friends.
Several studies, including one reported a few years ago in the American Journal of Public Health, indicate that if you're high on marijuana, you are more likely to do things that could embarrass or even hurt you such as driving under the influence or engaging in risky sexual behaviors. For athletes, THC's effect on timing, coordination, and movement-which can last for several hours-can seriously hurt performance.

Over the long term, smoking pot can cause you to lose interest in how you look and how you're getting a long at School or work. It can also be much worse for your respiratory health than smoking cigarettes; the amount of tar, carbon monoxide, and cancer-causing chemicals inhaled in marijuana smoke are three to five times greater than that inhaled from the same amount of tobacco smoke.

It's important also to remember that marijuana is an addictive drug, responsible for about 60% of all the teenagers who seek admission to drug treatment centers in the U.S. Smoking marijuana leads to some changes in the brain similar to those caused by cocaine, heroin and alcohol. Research at the University of Columbia demonstrates that people who regularly smoke marijuana experience withdrawal symptoms after they stop using it.

Have you smoke Marijuana today?

Photoshop SpeedUp 1.00

Posted by Deren Smith on 05 Aug 2004 - 03:04 at neowin.net

Adobe Photoshop SpeedUp significantly decreases the time it takes to load Adobe Photoshop by disabling the plug-ins that you may not need. There are several options such as whether to load the Adobe fonts, load the presets, and set the memory usage. You may restore to the original settings at any time. Adobe Photoshop SpeedUp is freeware, works with Adobe Photoshop versions 3 through 8.

NEWS FROM:

A new variant of the Atak worm, initially dubbed Atak.B, has been reported by most antivirus companies. However, the buzz around the malware—with its reported connection to the terrorist group Al Qaeda—may be greater than the threat itself, security professionals observed. Security researchers generally categorized the threat level of this new variant as low, thanks in part to the minimal risk presented by the original Atak.A worm. Either variant affects only PCs running Windows 95 through Windows XP.

Initial awareness of the worm was sparked by a press release from Budapest, Romania-based Bitdefender, the trade name for Softwin SRL's antivirus product lines. In the release, a company spokesperson intimated that the worm was written by a Malaysian hacker who had once claimed he would release a potent worm should the United States attack Iraq. Some have taken this to imply a connection between the hacker and the terrorist group Al Qaeda. However, while a record of a link between the hacker and organized groups has yet to be uncovered, several antivirus companies have found no signature in the Atak.B worm leading to any particular author.

I switch back to my slicer avatar ... thanx to *Adsero for all of this funny thing ...

Let me try to practice my English now ...

I just watching the making of "Some Kind of Monster" a film by Metallica. It was great. At first they tell about the mood of their band now ... their survival mode (Black untill St. Anger) ... up and down for a few years ... their deepest and darkest moment in their life ... doing a symphony stuff ... playing other ppl stuff (Garage Inc) ... Jason leaving Metallica (with unhappy reason) ... preparing to the end of Metallica ... the big question mark there ... preparing to make a new stuff ... a story behind how they record their new stuff (St. Anger) ... their attitude ... how the name of "St. Anger" come ... who will replace their bassist place ... who and why Robert Trujillo ... and their preparation on tour ... that's all ... Enjoy your weekend ...

01# Golden Gate Bridge - once the longest suspension bridge in the world, now a San Francisco destination for tourists from all over.

02# Rainbow Bridge - located in Utah, it has the distinction of being the world's longest natural bridge.

03# Chesapeake Bay Bridge - its official name is the William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge. Yeah, the nickname was a good idea.

04# Brooklyn Bridge - opened in 1883, it's spanned the physical, if not the cultural distance between Brooklynites and Manhattanites ever since.

05# Sundial Bridge - why wear a watch when you can tell time by the bridge you're crossing? However, with translucent decking it might be best not to keep your eyes on the road.

06# London Bridge - if you're looking for the bridge actually in London, odds are you're thinking of the Tower Bridge. If, however, you're looking for the bridge that was bought and re-assembled in Arizona, you're on the right track, er, bridge.

07# Bay Bridge - the current incarnation isn't quite up to snuff when it comes to seismic safety, so plans for a new San Francisco to Oakland span are underway. Meanwhile, tolls recently increased to $3, so dig a little deeper.

08# Peace Bridge - connecting Americans to our neighbors to the north via the Niagara River. Next time you're there, honk your horn for free trade, eh?

09# George Washington Bridge - brings owners of affordable housing in the Jersey burbs to their 9-to-5s in the Big Apple.

10# Tappan Zee Bridge - built in 1955, this trans-Hudson crossing derives its name from the Tappan Indians who once inhabited the region and the Dutch word zee, which translates to "wide expanse of water."

The typical computer system boots over and over again with no problems, starting the computer's operating system (OS) and identifying its hardware and software components that all work together to provide the user with the complete computing experience. But what happens between the time that the user powers up the computer and when the GUI icons appear on the desktop?

In order for a computer to successfully boot, its BIOS, operating system and hardware components must all be working properly; failure of any one of these three elements will likely result in a failed boot sequence.

When the computer's power is first turned on, the CPU initializes itself, which is triggered by a series of clock ticks generated by the system clock. Part of the CPU's initialization is to look to the system's ROM BIOS for its first instruction in the startup program. The ROM BIOS stores the first instruction, which is the instruction to run the power-on self test (POST), in a predetermined memory address. POST begins by checking the BIOS chip and then tests CMOS RAM. If the POST does not detect a battery failure, it then continues to initialize the CPU, checking the inventoried hardware devices (such as the video card), secondary storage devices, such as hard drives and floppy drives, ports and other hardware devices, such as the keyboard and mouse, to ensure they are functioning properly.

Once the POST has determined that all components are functioning properly and the CPU has successfully initialized, the BIOS looks for an OS to load.

The BIOS typically looks to the CMOS chip to tell it where to find the OS, and in most PCs, the OS loads from the C drive on the hard drive even though the BIOS has the capability to load the OS from a floppy disk, CD or ZIP drive. The order of drives that the CMOS looks to in order to locate the OS is called the boot sequence, which can be changed by altering the CMOS setup. Looking to the appropriate boot drive, the BIOS will first encounter the boot record, which tells it where to find the beginning of the OS and the subsequent program file that will initialize the OS.

Once the OS initializes, the BIOS copies its files into memory and the OS basically takes over control of the boot process. Now in control, the OS performs another inventory of the system's memory and memory availability (which the BIOS already checked) and loads the device drivers that it needs to control the peripheral devices, such as a printer, scanner, optical drive, mouse and keyboard. This is the final stage in the boot process, after which the user can access the system’s applications to perform tasks.

Royale Theme for WinXP

A new theme, potentially destined for Windows XP, has leaked out of Microsoft and onto the web. The theme appears to have come out of a beta version of Media Center 2005, currently in testing.

The theme is not a substantially different incarnation of the existing of Luna, the current default theme for Windows XP. You can see the main changes in the screenshots below; one could describe it as being a 'glass mod' of Luna.

As Microsoft knows, it is very hard to please everyone when it comes to themes. However, I think they can be reasonably certain that most people will like this new version of Luna.

It is unknown whether this theme will make it into XP in the near future; Microsoft could potentially sneak it in at the last point with the soon to be released service pack 2 for XP.

By Patricia Reaney

LONDON (Reuters) - Cigarette smokers die on average 10 years earlier than non-smokers but kicking the habit, even at 50 years old, can halve the risk, according to half a century of research reported on Tuesday.

Findings from a 50-year study into the dangers of smoking showed that if people quit by the age of 30 they can avoid nearly all of the risk of dying prematurely.

"Cigarette smoking reduces the expectation of life by 10 years," said 91-year-old Oxford University Professor Richard Doll who discovered the link between cancer and smoking.

"It is clear that consistent cigarette smoking doubles mortality throughout adult life -- middle and old age. It is also clear that giving up smoking can eliminate a very large part of the hazard," he told Reuters.

Doll and Bradford Hill confirmed the link between smoking and lung cancer in a landmark study published in the British Medical Journal on June 26, 1954.

Half a century later, Doll and Oxford University Professor Richard Peto report the 50-year results from the same study of 34,439 British doctors in the journal.

"This study is a remarkable achievement. Studies that last 50 years are highly unusual in medicine, and it's even more unusual for one to have an author who was there at the beginning and after 50 years," the journal's editor Dr Richard Smith told a news conference.

"It has taught us a great deal," he added.

Doll, who had smoked for 19 years before giving up, had planned only a five-year project but the initial findings were so intriguing he carried on for five decades.

"I gave up smoking at age 37 when I saw the results of our first study. They were quite convincing to me," he said in an interview.

The early results from his second study confirmed that smoking causes lung cancer and suggested that it also causes heart disease.

"We thought we'd better carry the study on for a lot longer and see if smoking causes anything else and by goodness it does," said Doll.

"By the time we did the 40-year follow-up...we found there were some 25 diseases which smoking seemed to cause and that the mortality was about double with the consistency of smoking."

Fifty-year results showed that among men born in the 1920s who became persistent smokers, about two-thirds died from their habit.

"Nobody has ever before seen a population in which two-thirds of the smokers get killed by their habit," said Peto, who has worked with Doll for 30 years.

"These men who were born in the 1920s and went into the army in the Second World War...became serious cigarette smokers from the age of 18 in a way no previous generation had ever done. Among those who continued, about two thirds got killed by it."

Since Doll began the study five decades ago, tobacco has already killed about 100 million people worldwide. During the present century there will be about one billion tobacco deaths if current smoking patterns continue, according to Peto.

"Smoking kills people and stopping works," he said.Supporter

Time has proven that collectors tend to make the most money in the U.S. Rare Coin Market for several reasons. First, they search out and find the rarest and finest coins they can afford.

Next, they search out "undervalued coins" and buy during coin market lulls to take advantage of the lower prices. Buying in today's market climate offers you superb upside profit potential.

Before you get started with a serious investment in the U.S. Rare Coin Market, there are some basics it's important to know:

PUT COINS IN PERSPECTIVE – Don't confuse coin collecting with coin investing. Over 136 million collectors are putting away new State Quarters that are minted by the billions. They are not "rare" coins at all and few will be very valuable in our lifetimes "Rare Coins" like Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins originally have very low mintages, most were destroyed when gold was recalled to the U.S. Treasury in 1933 and every one is rare to some degree. These coins have a limited, fixed supply and have historically soared in value when demand overwhelms their availability. Rare coins go up as well as down in value. We believe the most successful investment portfolios of U.S. Rare Coins were built in down markets typically when gold and silver prices are lower.

CREATE A PLAN FIRST – Before you jump in the water, it's important to decide how much you want to invest, your holding period, and to set clear, long-term goals. The most successful collectors sought out expert advice early and then followed their plan carefully. One strategy is to build complete "Sets" of coins of one type, one denomination, or one era. By systematically assembling complete Rare Coin Sets of the hardest to find and most desirable coins you can end up with a collection that is worth more than the value of the individual coins alone. Investors typically should consider a minimum of a three to five year or longer holding period to maximize their returns.

HAVE A PRECISE FOCUS – Thousands of coins have been issued over the past 200 years. Very few collectors are experts on more than a few types of coins. For that reason alone, it's important to build a relationship with a firm that employs a team of knowledgeable Rare Coin Specialists and Numismatic Experts that are recognized as pillars of authority throughout the industry. Together, we can help you define your areas of interest, your investment goals, and our team of specialists can then guide you to a specific area of U.S. Coins designed to be both profitable and extremely enjoyable.

THE FIVE FACTORS FOR SUCCESS – To profitably build a balanced and diversified Hard Asset Portfolio, you need to know the driving forces behind the U.S. Rare Coin Market:

1. Collect Coins with Strong Demand – We recommend U.S. Rare Coins that have a broad base of both active investors and collectors. The more wealthy, sophisticated, and avid the base of buyers in the area of rare coins your are collecting, the more successful your portfolio should be in the long run. These are typically harder to find coins which is why you need a professional dealer to assist you.

2. Look for Small Supplies – We recommend U.S. Rare Coins of the highest quality for the date that you can afford. These are always the hardest to find, most desirable collector coins and have historically been top market performers. In our opinion, these coins are always in demand by collectors and will be the easiest coins to liquidate later, and turn the best profits.

3. Strong Performance History in Hot Markets – Take the time to review the price history of the rare coins you purchase. Rare coins that have a good history of 100% to 200% price increases during recent bull markets, usually offer your an excellent profit potential in the next hot market. While past performance is no guarantee of future value, undesirable rare coins are losers in any market.

4. Each Coin Should Be Carefully Selected – It is of utmost importance to remember that each rare coin must stand on the value of its own individual merit related to grade, price, eye appeal, and rarity.

5. Focus on Rarity Always – Finally, for those with the budget to acquire the very best, we recommend you insist on the rarest and finest coins you can find. There are fundamentally two ways to determine a coin's rarity. That is "Condition Rarity" and "Absolute Rarity." Condition Rarity is a coin that is rare in higher grades. Some coins are common in worn, circulated grades, yet there could be only five coins known to exist in higher mint-state grades of MS-63 to MS-65. Absolute Rarity is a coin that is rare in any grade. These are truly desirable gold coins that are hard to locate and acquire in all grades. These few coins that are Absolutely Rare in any grade are the "...
