StartSo, it's been about an age since I last wrote an actual journal entry, so, here it is.Expect this journal to be pretty long, since, obviously, I haven't updated in quite a while.Just so you guys are aware, I am writing this journal in reverse order of the events occurring (if they're not events or they're in the future, then, I'll likely tack them on the end, or something), of course, very likely, I'll forget the order, so what I just said probably won't mean much anyway Anyway, let's get on with it.Avatar: The Last AirbenderSo, yeah, most recently, I've been a bit absent from dAmn, and Avatar is the reason why, I've watched the entire series twice in the last four days....Yeah.I mainly decided to watch it on a whim, which is the same reason why I decided to read the Twilight books (and watch the film) as well as read the Harry Potter books and watch all the Harry Potter films.I think I decided to watch it (and read the aforementioned) as 'research'.Naturally, as an MN@, I interact with a lot of people, and I logically come in contact with quite a few meme's and fandoms, so, to me at the least, it makes sense that I actually learn about them.Instead of using second hand sources, in this case (as is the case with Twilight and Harry Potter), I decided to see it for my self, so I can form my own opinion on the subjects. As it stands, and as it may be evident, I actually like Avatar.Avatar isn't the sort of thing I would tend to be interested in, Cartoons aren't really my thing and Anime certainly isn't (yes, yes, I know, it's not 'Anime', so stop your rabid typing in the back). It's also not really a cartoon that is targeted at my specific demographic.Nonetheless, I have already watched through it twice. There are plenty of reasons why, the story (the overarching and individual stories) is compelling, if not done before, the characters are believable, and, importantly, they are human and not, necessarily superhero messiah types. The action scenes are very well choreographed and the art direction is good.About the only issue I have with it is the shortness of the episodes, being, on average only 24 minutes long. This has both good and bad points, the good point is that the stories themselves are condensed and focused, you hardly ever find your attention wandering, because there are few 'boring bits'.The bad point is that the characters and places aren't fleshed out as much, and the individual stories tend not to be that complex. That having been said, the show wasn't, initially, targeted at my sort of demographic so the complexity issue could be forgiven on that part.Either way, it gets a hearty thumbs up for me.To any who wouldn't normally be interested, I encourage you to watch at least the first few episodes, watching just two will only 'waste' about 50 minutes of your life, and, if you do get hooked, there is the fortune in that running through the entire show only takes 24.4 hours Canon A470 - A Short ReviewI've been looking for a halfway decent compact camera for over a year now.Initially, I set my targets high: it had to have a wide angle lens, it had to record RAW files, it had to record video at a minimum of 640x480, it had to produce clean images at moderate ISO settings (400 and 800, specifically), it had to have at least some degree of manual control, and, finally, it had to actually be compact. This essentially set my targets on cameras like the Canon G9, Panasonic LX2, Ricoh GX100, and, later, the G10, LX3 and the GX200.The downside was that these cameras cost the proverbial arm and leg.The main reason why I wanted to get a compact camera was because, frankly, my Nikon D50, while it produces excellent images, isn't that practical, thus, I tend to leave it at home because it's just too big and heavy.A compact camera fixed the issue by being small, I knew I wouldn't get all the advantages, such as an interchangeable lens (that being said, the Olympus E-P1, is about the size of a Canon G10 and has interchangeable lenses), or clean high ISO files, or short depth of field, but I was willing to make that sacrifice to be able to have a camera on me at all times. As mentioned, the cameras I wanted were out of my price range, but the cameras I could afford generally didn't tend to have the features I needed, obviously. Why then, did I choose the A470?The A470 is the cheapest camera in Canon's line up, costing £50. It has some degree of manual control, a 38-132mm equiv zoom lens, records video at 640x480, and has a 7.1MP sensor. The main reason why I chose the A470 over its more capable brothers was because of that price tag. £50 is pretty hard to beat.I also critically looked at my normal photography habits with my D50.For a start, I don't really need a wide angle lens. My 50/1.8 tends to be permenantly attached to my camera, on my camera that 50 has the same field of view as a 75mm lens. In other words, 38mm is decidedly expansive compared to what I am used to. In addition, the times I need wide angle are...

In case anyone was interested, yes, I fully intend to go to the meet this Sunday.I don't know the actual details, of course, it's on Sunday, and we are guessing that the meet will be at the Albert Memorial, will 'begin' at 2pm.Personally, I intend to take the 12:10 from Brighton Station to London Victoria (which is the closest station to Hyde Park), arriving at just past 13:00 (assuming no problems), then I will walk the 1.7ish miles from the station to the Albert Memorial (which, according to Google Maps will take 37 minutes, but, I intend to beat that). To note, I won't be waiting at the Victoria station, obviously because I am walking and because I don't actually know when the meet will start or where exactly it is, so I want to give myself as much of a head start as possible. As such, if you wanted to meet before the, err, meet, the only chances you have is to find me on the train or meet at Brighton Station or something, naturally, either scenario is unlikely to happen.Anyway, I hope to see you all there.

Jumping on the Bandwagon	So, I figure, what with it being the end of the year and all (and, officially, the longest year since 1992, if you didn't know already), I should probably jump on the bandwagon and summarise my year and write out something resembling new years resolutions.	The Summary	HealthIt has been good, one of my resolutions was to lose a little weight, and I have, about 45lbs or so. It's not a lot, but it's a start, and I am generally living healthier today than I was a year ago.WorkGiven the current economy, I am just happy I have a job at all, alas, I don't have a job in website development, I did have a job in it, but it really didn't have any job satisfaction (working as a human copy machine is not fun ), this year I aim to have a job 'working with computers' in some fashion or another, to be honest, I don't really care what it is as long as I can do it.LoveIt has been relatively quiet really, I had a blip on the radar around June if my memory serves me (lol, I already know I'm wrong :B), but, aside from that, absolutely nothing.dAWell, I'm still here, so that's a good start .This year on dA has been awesome, I had my fourth birthday in June, in August was my first year on the MN@, and then in November, I became a Senior MN@.Naturally, with being a Senior MN@, I also have DD privileges, and I've currently DD'd 22 images. In all, an awesome year on dA for me.ArtAs many will probably notice, my project, APhotoADay is currently stalled at the 280 image mark, which is about 85 images short of an image a day for this year.If you couldn't tell, then, APhotoADay has ceased. In particular, I found I just couldn't keep up with the creative demand (I am just not creative enough to attempt to produce a good image every single day, no matter how much I try to lie to myself). To be honest, I have no real plans for my art in 2009, it's not so much that I've stopped, it's just that I want to expand into different areas (I actually want to do some fiction writing, for example, something that has been on a back burner for about, well, eight years or so ).Also, I have learned, through APhAD that the two disciplines of photography I like the most is macro photography, and, surprisingly (maybe) portraiture, my issue is that I lack the confidence to get anyone that I can photograph, and, as a result, I have to resort to photographing myself.Another reason that 2009 will probably be a slow year for art (in comparison to 2008, at the least), is simply because I actually want to get back into developing websites and applications for fun (yes, fun), this is applicable here because both of those are creative pursuits for me, and as already mentioned, I only have enough creativity in my batteries for so much :B.I know I've probably forgotten some other vital sections, but, frankly, if I think of them, I add them later.	The Resolutions	Get a better job, preferably working with computers.Lose more weightFinish my content management system, and then start some more website development projects.Try to expand my artistic horizons past photography and basic photomanipulationImportantly, have fun. There, simple, shouldn't be too difficult :B.	Daily Deviation Suggestions	This is just a short checklist/guideline when you want to make a Daily Deviation suggestion to me. I can and will DD any image from any gallery, keep in mind, however, that I am a photographer, which will take top priority (better to pick what you're best at, after all). If you want to suggest anything outside of photography, take a look at my favourites to get a good idea of what I generally like. Title the suggestion note with 'DD Suggestion' (or something similar). Suggestions with a reason for the suggestion will be considered before suggestions with no reason. You must include a thumbnail of the suggested image, any suggestion without such will be promptly binned. If the image is a photomanipulation, or otherwise incorporates content that the deviant didn't otherwise create themselves, then the deviation must list its sources. I can't, in good faith, DD an image without this information, I'm sure you wouldn't like it if I DD'd an image that had parts of an image you had created used without permission, or even attribution. The deviant that is receiving the DD must not have received a DD in the last three months, at a minimum. I prefer to feature those who have never received a DD. The deviation must not have more than 200 favourites. Do not suggest yourself, it makes you look like a wanker, just don't do it.
It Doesn't ExistWhat I may say may seem controversial to some, particularly to the traditionalists. But, it's my firm belief (for lack of a better word), that there is no such thing as Photomanipulation in the context of how the term is used now. There is just photography. The main reason why I believe this, above all else, is that photography, by its very nature, is a manipulation of the reality it is capturing.Fundementally, creating a photograph is a manipulation, since, to take a photograph, you have to transpose a three dimensional scene on to a two dimensional plane.Choosing the aperture (which effects what is in focus), focal length (which effects how much of the scene you capture, and the depth cues of the scene), shutter speed, ISO and framing are all decisions that are made before the shutter is pressed.Contrary to seemingly popular opinion, photography is not realistic. If you ever want evidence of this, take a look at the 3D art galleries, you're sure to find a number of pieces in there that you can swear look like photographs. Our eyes don't behave like a camera and lens, and every body see's the same scene a slightly different way, depending on their social context and their visual system (someone with myopia will see a scene differently than someone with perfect vision, for example, and, likewise, someone raised in China would have a different social context on which to base a scene they see than someone from England). What is a photomanipulation?Well, the original term was coined (as far as I am aware) by those who make 'photographs' by using elements from other peoples photographs."But, if you open up photoshop and remove entire elements or add new elements into an image, doesn't that make it a photomanipulation?"No.Let's look at this from another point of view.I'm out and about, and I see something interesting that I want to photograph, let's say it's a nice wide panorama of a sun set. And in that panorama happens to be a nice honkin telephone pole right smack in the middle. Now, I've two options, I could frame the scene to the left or right of the telephone pole so as not to include it, or, if possible, I could walk to the other side of the pole. Or, I could take two photo's of the same scene, one where I saw the scene, and one two or three metres to the left or right, pointed at the same scene. With the latter option, it's a simple case of painting over the telephone pole with the data of the sky 'behind' the telephone pole from the second image. Some may say that's photomanipulation, I would say that's the photographer showing what he's seeing, not necessarily what is actually there.Too many people have the misconception that art photography == documentary photography. That it's not photography at all if you do any more than what is misconceived to be doable in the darkroom (like simple saturation/exposure adjustments and some sharpening). Most people don't realise that some of the most well known and popular photographs would be called 'photomanipulations' by the millions of armchair enthusiasts. The greats, like Ansel Adams, were certainly not afraid of spending hours in the dark room massaging one print until it was 'perfect'.Now? If you so much as consider removing stray strands of hair, or removing a spot, or getting rid of an ugly empty can from an image, it should be shoved off to the photomanipulation category.I will freely admit that my photo's are heavily massaged, of which, I hope is not noticeable, but manipulated all the same.Sometimes it's just a case of tweaking the contrast and bumping up (or down) the saturation, other cases it could be giving myself a digital make over so that I look remotely presentable in my photo's (if you only knew how much work my face needs :B).I would freely admit that I probably enjoy the desk work of photography more than the leg work of photography. Creating the exposure is the relatively easy part, actually making that exposure shine is difficult (getting the 'perfect' image from the exposure itself tends to be rare, more often than not, it's the post work that turns a good image into a great image (or, in my case, a mediocre image into an okay image :B)).Don't call images photomanipulations because they've had a little work done on them, by that definition, all photographs are photomanipulations by the very nature of the art of transposing 3D reality into a 2D recording.Just because a photograph doesn't necessarily exist in real life, doesn't mean it's a photomanipulation.Art photography is not supposed to be documentary, it's supposed to reflect what the photographer see's, or, more accurately, what the photographer wants you to see.PimpsGive me more stuff to pimp .The above was inspired by [link]@Comrade-Kelly's CSS Contest	Blog	APhAD	#devart	#MNAdmin A Journal by @sine-out, free for anyone to use and modify as per the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License

And The Barrage of Assault I Receive From It[link]Seriously?Someone would actually kill another because of this. Really?Okay, so, if people aren't savvy now (read the damn link ). This complaint is about the LHC.Or, more precisely, my complaint is about the idiots protesting against lighting it up.From my point of view it's is downright stupid to protest against it, because I have some idea of the physics behind it, but, it wouldn't take a layman a physics degree (something I don't have, which makes me a layman too) to fire up their web browser and search engine of choice and find the LHC home page which explains that the LHC isn't dangerous. Here's a little factoid for those who are against turning it on.Cosmic Ray's hit the atmosphere with more energy than the LHC will ever produce. That's right, we're still alive and kicking despite that, no micro-black-holes have gobbled up the planet and everything is dandy. If you can't accept that, then consider this.Black Holes evaporate. And, Black Holes aren't the intergalactic vacuums that everybody seems to think they are.Black Holes evaporate through a process called Hawking Radiation. Of course, it's not actually proven (not having a black hole to test the theory on makes that difficult), but given a fundamental law that no 'information' is ever lost (in the same way that no energy is ever spontaneously destroyed or created, for example) Black Holes would violate that law without some sort of Radiation.Black Holes are thought to be intergalactic vacuum cleaners because they are so destructive. They're so destructive because of their gravity, and because they happen to be close to the things that they affect.Case in point, if a black hole with a mass identical to the sun were to replace our sun instantaneously, aside from the solar system going cold and dark, the planets would orbit around this black hole just as they would the sun.Even with that in mind, two things are being forgotten. On the nigh impossible chance that we do manage to create a micro black hole, first, this micro black hole would be tiny. If it doesn't actually evaporate, its mass would only equal that of the energy put into accelerating the particles. In other words, not a great deal (matter contains a gargantuan amount of energy). It'd hardly be a vacuum cleaner, because it's gravitational attraction to other objects would actually be overcome by the other fundamental forces, like Electromagnetism, or the Weak/Strong Nuclear Forces. Gravity is a very weak force, compared to those three.Even if this micro black hole doesn't evaporate and also happens to have a high enough gravity, keep in mind that the micro black hole is being held in a vacuum. In other words, short of direct physical contact, there is literally nothing for it to vacuum up anyway, therefore it won't grow in size and it won't start a chain reaction. As mentioned, Cosmic Rays hit our atmosphere with a higher amount of energy than the LHC can produce, and that's certainly not in a vacuum. If micro black holes were created, didn't evaporate, and did have a measurable gravitational field, I'd think we'd notice our atmosphere being sucked up by now.Anyway, I've gotten way off topic here.People issuing death threats to attempt to avoid something that just won't happen, based on third hand knowledge and scaremongering. And what's worse is that those threats are basically falling on deaf ears. The full test firing will happen on September 10th (of which there will be no actual collisions, since it's just a test of the entire accelerator circuit, as opposed to the 3km stretch tested a few days ago), regardless, primarily because of all the delays getting the accelerator up and running.People, please go do some basic research before you go protesting or issuing death threats on something. At least try to back up your protests.PimpsGive me more stuff to pimp .@Comrade-Kelly's CSS Contest	Blog	APhAD	#devart	#MNAdmin A Journal by @sine-out, free for anyone to use and modify as per the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License

And Resistance To The Changes That ResultI'm sure many of the photographers (and some videographers) who are reading this right now, and who happen to keep up on current camera developments have heard of the Nikon D90.The Nikon D90 is an otherwise unremarkable upgrade of the Nikon D80, basically, take the guts of the D300, downgrade a few of the components by using some of the components that can be found in the Nikon D60, and there you have it, a new Advanced Amateur camera. The type of camera a Nikon owner would buy as their second Nikon dSLR, someone like myself, for example, considering an upgrade from a Nikon D40/D50/D40x/D60/D70/D70s (phew, not so much the D80 though, since the advantage isn't as great for the upgrader).Nikon, of course, had to throw a curve-ball (to use a common American vernacular ), something that they seem to be in the habit of doing recently (what with the announcement and subsequent release of cameras like the D3, D700 and D300, all of which have helped to tip the balance of power somewhat).See, the Nikon D90 is the first dSLR with the ability to record video. It's a text book example of convergence, everybody knew that, with the dawning of digital SLR's, that video on dSLR's was inevitable.Evidently, knowing that it will occur is completely different to actually seeing it occur. With the announcement of this feature has come a slew of people coming out of the woodwork that want to say their piece on how wrong it is (and a handful who think it's a good thing, such as myself).I mean, naturally, dSLR's are cameras, they can't possibly be used for the acquisition of video, it's sacrilege to very notion of photography. In the same way that phones with cameras in them are sacrilegious, or how games consoles can access the internets is wrong, or how printers can now scan, copy, or even fax documents (srsly, who uses a fax machine any more? :B).Hell, even MP3 players that also have the misfortune of being able to play video is wrong too.Okay, I'm getting carried away, but I think I've made my point all the same.Convergence is the very essence of technological development. Those who are against cameras like the D90 being able to take video don't seem to realise the advantages that having video on a dSLR would bring. And they frequently forget that Nikon aren't holding a gun to their heads and forcing them to use the video feature (since the video feature itself adds no hardware to the camera (save a microphone and speaker) to let it record video, the fact is that Liveview, and the camera's JPEG engine gives all the tools needed to acquire and store a video stream, meaning the addition of video is effectively free).I like that Video is finally been included, I'm actually surprised it hasn't been sooner. The fact is, is that, if you want a large sensor video camera, you'd need to spend close to $20,000 to get one (go google 'Red One', you'll see how expensive it can get). Now, I'm not saying the D90 is perfect, it records to Motion JPEG (hardly the most efficient format to record to), it has no Audio inputs, and on that note, only records Mono audio. The camera also lacks autofocus, something that even £100 video cameras have available (I'd point that virtually no point and shoot allows you to focus or zoom in video mode, something that the D90 at least allows the option of). But, on the other hand, the D90 offers a few things that most consumer level video cameras can never offer, things like Depth of Field control, interchangeable lenses, and superior high ISO performance.Convergence is a good thing, but it's people stuck in the past, with antiquated ideas of what things should be like that restrict the development of technologies that fun, useful or, even, important.I personally welcome the change, and I hope the ones stuck in the past get their heads out of the sand and realise that that change will come, whether they like it or not.PimpsGive me more stuff to pimp .@Comrade-Kelly's CSS Contest	Blog	APhAD	#devart	#MNAdmin A Journal by @sine-out, free for anyone to use and modify as per the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License and can be found at [link]

Blog	APhAD	#devart	#MNAdmin	Clearing block Clearing blockDescriptionThis journal CSS is supposed to be 'simple'.Yes, yes, I know there are a thousand and one 'simple' CSS layouts out there, hell, my last layout purported to be 'simple', and it was a mess, all things considered anyway. This CSS is indirectly for *eCSSited contest (at [link]), which stipulates no images, since I am not a designer, my journal styles have no images by default (the reason why it's indirectly for the aforementioned contest, even though I am entering it, is because I had been thinking of doing a new CSS layout for a long time already, and this just happened to be a nice encouragement). In the lines of 'ease of use' the code is, or at least should be, relatively simple, all you need is a title (if you don't want the splitting benefits of the title you don't actually need one, but for the sake of sectioning, it might be useful) and bog standard text. The HTML in the download should give an example of the text used for this journal, so it should help demonstrate how simple the HTML can be.In the section below, you'll see the various combinations of HTML you can use, one thing you should notice is that, around any 'special HTML' (including divs, blockquotes, ul's, ol's, and dl's) there is an empty line both before and after them, I included this, because, basically, it's easier to read HTML when there is some space around it, and since this layout is supposed to be simple, I thought it prudent... just make sure you keep the same formatting.Another thing to keep in mind is that the activity/mood list (or whatever you want to call it (the list that shows what you're reading/watching/listening too and so on)) should be placed at the bottom, top placement is nice, but it has never worked in my journal, so all my journal 'designs' are organised around that little bug.TestTextThe Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a flutter of the sails, and was at rest. The flood had made, the wind was nearly calm, and being bound down the river, the only thing for it was to come to and wait for the turn of the tide. The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway. In the offing the sea and the sky were welded together without a joint,......and in the luminous space the tanned sails of the barges drifting up with the tide seemed to stand still in red clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished spirits. A haze rested on the low shores that ran out to sea in vanishing flatness.By someone from somewhere	Unordered List	Test	Test	With line breakLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit.
Long, long ago, on a website not-so-far away...In the great community of deviantART, within the mighty village of dAmn, a war is brewing -- a war to appease the Great Fella God!Many in the past have sought ways to please this angry beast, and many have failed. These tales of great battle and loss are still whispered around the campfires of #devart: `mykel's valiant attempts to offer @realillusions as a virgin sacrifice, or $chix0r's struggles to serenade Fella with her dulcet Scottish tones .. but nothing could be found to please the Great Fella God, not even a scantily clad `Oukan. But now the tides are turning and the war is changing! The mighty warrior $Tachy-on and his valiant troops of MN@ found a way to please Fella, and now the tribes of dAmn are competing for Fella's blessing -- and so can you!You can help gain favor to you and your tribe by luring and trapping new deviants into the great village of dAmn -- but that is not enough to please the Great Fella God! No, you must make sure your new tribesman stay in dAmn by showing them how great our village is! If they stay and your trap is successful, rumor says that the Great Fella God will be mighty pleased...PrizesPrizes will be awarded to the top 3 individual players with the most "Tribal Points" at the end of the game.1'st Prize: $200 deviant dollars2'nd Prize: $125 deviant dollars3'rd Prize: $75 deviant dollarsTribe Prizes: Within the Tribe that has the most combined Tribe Points, 3 random Tribe Members will win $25 deviant dollars. The game will run from June 23'rd through July 21'st.How To PlayYou begin by joining the #dATribes chatroom and laying a “trap” for another person by typing:!trap usernameNow contact that person and tell them about the contest and the dAmn Village! When you get them to join the #dATribes chatroom, the trap is successful, and they become a member of your Tribe. At that point, they can start playing too and help to build the strength of your Tribe. You can set up to 3 traps at a time. When the trap is successful in bringing someone into your Tribe, you gain the trap back. If the trap isn't successful within 24 hours, it disintegrates and you gain another trap to replace it. (The traps are rather primitive and don't stand up to weather very well). You can't set a trap for just anyone. Generally speaking, you won't be able to set a trap for someone who already regularly visits the village of dAmn. How to Gain Tribal PointsFella will be pleased when your traps are successful and you show the new Tribe member how fun the dAmn village can be. It's important to keep them interested in the dAmn Village because it effects how many points you can earn: For every player that you successfully trap into your Tribe, you gain 10 Tribal Points. After that, for each day that person visits the dAmn Village you will gain one additional point - the dAmn village encompasses all chatrooms on the Chat Network. If a Tribe member you've successfully trapped into your Tribe is away from the dAmn village for 5 days or more, you lose the 10 Tribal Points and no longer gain the additional point per day for them.Spying & StealingAs you get better at successfully trapping people, the Fella God will reward you with Steal Spells. For every 3 people you successfully trap into your Tribe, Fella will bless you with a Steal Spell. You can use this Steal Spell at any time to attempt to steal a trap that is set for someone else. Normally you would do this after "spying" on another Tribe and casting it after they have set a trap. If you have a Steal Spell, you can cast it by typing:!steal usernameFor example: @leaf-lover has a Steal Spell and has just noticed that $Tachy-on has just set a trap for $chix0r. @leaf-lover wants to cast the spell so she types !steal chix0r in an attempt to steal the trap set for $chix0r.Should the Almighty Fella be looking upon you favorably, your spell will succeed. Successfully stealing a trap has two advantages: If the trapped player joins the chatroom, they will become a member of your Tribe instead, and so you get the Tribe Points involved. You slow the progress of the other tribe by temporarily cutting down on the number of traps they can set. The trap goes back to the original player once it either successfully traps the user or it disintegrates. You can't attempt to steal traps from members of your own Tribe.Getting Updates on your GameTo get information about your points and events that have happened to you in the game, you can type:!statusThis will tell you how many points you currenty have, how many traps are available to you, and if you have any Steal Spells. It will also show you recent events that have impacted your game. For example, it will tell you when a trap is successful, if someone has stolen your trap, or if a player you've trapped has been away from the dAmn village for more than 5 days.Rules Do not spam users into joining #dATribes to gain a tribe member. All interaction with other deviants...

Just About Ready for Nursery School Yup, as of the time of writing, I have been a member for almost precisely 4 years.I sort of forgot my last birthday here and I think I didn't even notice my second, so I wanted to say something profound and important for this birthday, but I kept coming up short. So, I think I will analyse and see what I can come up with.Statistics Time! We all love statistics, and every good analysis needs statistics, and lots of them.At the time of writing I have just short of 22,650 page views, which increase at a rate of a whole 15.5 views per day, I have 12,971 forum posts 1,970 comments and 273 favourites, I have 162 watchers and I watch 112 deviants. And, in total, I have 101 deviations + two scraps.Between this and my last birthday, I have gained some 4,000 forum posts and about 10,000 page views (that's a guess though it's likely more). The Profound Bit Between this and my last birthday, I have gone from being a subscriber and beta tester to an MN@, probably my biggest change yet.Over my 'deviant life' I have gone through ~,*,;,=,@ symbol variations.Four years is a very long time, particularly in internetland, where most things last weeks or months, and not years.I came to deviantART to share my poetry (and I am very glad that most of you never got to see it :B), I stayed for the forums .It may be sad that, in an art community, it has been the forums that have kept me here, but, this is, after all, a community, and the forums happen to be one of the integral parts of it (in my opinion, of course).I have learned a great deal thanks to this site, I learned about photography and it was this website that pushed me in the right direction in website development. It also allowed me a stable (and developed) platform on which to develop other aspects of myself, I am, for example, far more confident now than I was when I first joined (though, relatively, I am still very timid in 'real life').As mentioned, I became an MN@ last year (August, to be precise), which has helped me appreciate the work done by those behind the scenes, as well as seeing what's next for the general population. The MN@ had also given me a more or less formal introduction to dAmn, something which I had hardly touched before joining.I keep on seeing, or hearing about those who want to/are leaving this site, and, to be honest, I can't understand why, this site has been of great benefit to me already, it will be interesting to see how far it will take me.Not profound, I know, but, it'll have to do .
Another Month Another Update This month has actually been fairly uneventful, though, fortunately, that hasn't hurt my turn out this month. Twelve keepers in 31 days (technically anyway, more on that later), that's a 38.7% hit ratio. At the very least, I am being consistent with my output. What I wasn't consistent on, however, was my timing, my non-circadian rhythm has really done a number on me, I can naturally have more than 30 hour days when I free run, and this month, no matter what I tried, I couldn't reign that in, to that end I would frequently run out of synch (indeed it got bad enough that I was lapping myself (realigning with socially accepted norms) every three or so days). That combined with a serious lack of 'drive' for lack of a better word due to my constant lack of sleep meant that I sometimes went more than two days without an image.Obviously, this is something that I will have to try to remedy this month.Still, it could have been worse, at least this month I managed to stay consistent with my output.
Mixed Blessings This month went pretty good, all things considered, quite a surprising number of keepers (in my opinion), and not only that, even though for two and a half weeks I was without my D50, I managed to gain something useful from that experience. Ten images, thirty days, thankfully, I don't even need to get the calculator to work out the percentages, exactly 33.3r% in the 'keeper' range, there were a few other 'near misses' too, however, a 1/3rd hit rate is nothing to be sniffed at.This month, as mentioned, I was without my D50 for two and a half weeks and I was relying on a £100 video camera (that thankfully recorded to SD memory). The camera itself had no manual controls, save for exposure compensation (which is only really useful in bright light, in lower light, the camera had a bottom shutter limit of 1/11th of a second, so using exposure compensation to increase the exposure length would not have worked). In addition the quality of its files left a lot to be desired, the JPEG's were not compressed that well (rather, they were, they were compressed too much), and the lens, being fixed focal length, didn't help matters much either.Still, one shouldn't blame his tools, and I didn't, the camera itself did have a few advantages that my D50 doesn't have, the three main ones being that it's small (not really, but it was jacket pocketable), it was light and it has an articulated LCD display (obviously). All of which meant that I was able to take the camera to places I'd normally not be able to take a camera, and that, when it did come to taking the photo's, I'd have more framing opportunities (despite the lack of a zoom lens) because I was able to shoot from the hip, or above my head or what-have-you without contorting my body to get into those positions. In addition to this, I managed to work around (somewhat) the limitations of the file output of the camera by making the camera upsize the image when it came to save the image, and then, in processing, I converted the file to 16bit and downsized it to the 5MP that the camera is supposed to capture.Granted, upsizing and downsizing decreases the quality of an image, but all things considered, the resizing didn't make much of a difference to the image quality (primarily because it wasn't that good to start off with).Still, with that extra computed data, I had more leeway when it came to manipulations which more than made up for the difference.I was also forced to change other aspects of my image processing. For example, on my D50 files, I would normally apply my image manipulations directly to the image itself. However, with the limitations of the images I was getting from the video camera, that would have been impractical, so I had to use adjustment layers instead, now that I have the D50 back, I am still using those techniques, since they allow much greater flexibility with my image editing, and my image editing can be more easily done in stages if necessary. In short, while I didn't necessarily have the tools I'd have preferred to use, the fact that I had a change of pace meant that, this month, I learned just as much about photography than I have done, so far, during the entire time of this challenge.
A Good Month This month, in fact, will probably be marked as one of my best (I have the distinct impression that it is downhill from here ). As you can no doubt count, I considered twelve images to be keepers (yes, I did include a self portrait and I didn't include a 'desktop screenshot' in that), that makes for a 38.7% hit rate. This is both a good and bad thing. It's good because either I am getting better at this (either in finding the images or taking them, or both), or because I am loosening some of my self imposed restrictions. It's a bad thing, of course, because I am coming to the realisation that very soon from now, I will start to really run out of interesting things to photograph within a stones throw from where I live, meaning I will have to travel further and further to get an interesting image every day.Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of ideas bouncing around my head for locations within a mile of where I live, but the more obvious things are starting to disappear on me.Of course, it doesn't help that the weather has been fairly boring (with the exception of some snow a week ago :B).All in all though, I can't give much commentary on this month, however.A License One thing I have been meaning to explain is the licensing I put on my images. As a rule of thumb, my images are under the Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported. But I also sell many of those images as prints, and I also (generally anyway) upload full resolution JPEG's of those images here and on my website.A few may say that I am openly inviting people to just take the images and do what they will with them regardless of the license. And in a sense, that's exactly what I am doing.I don't just consider the images as photo's, I also consider them resources, stock imagery if you will (I more relate them as resources, since I only offer the edited images, not unedited originals), indeed, if dA had the ability to let us add images into multiple categories, I would put the images in a resources category in addition to the photography categories. That in itself should say that I want people to use the images, if the so desire.I use the aforementioned license not to stop people from making commercial gains from using my images, but simply in the hopes that they simply ask me if they can, my answer will be yes, the main reason why I want to be asked, is because I want to know who is using them and what they are being used for.So, that's why I use the license I use, not to restrict people, but just so I know what is being done to the images, and where it is being done.	last.fm The webcam image is titled 'Pod Bay Doors' by xkcd.com can be found at [link] and is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 License, more info of which can be found at [link] Using IE? browsehappy.com maybe a place you want to go.
A Mixed Bag This month was a mess.Chronic forgetfulness, lack of motivation and lack of subjects all made for a pretty crap month, all in all. This month, I only, strictly, made five 'good' images. Now, in truth, this is still a hit rate of just over one image in every six (last month is was 1 in 8 'keepers'), so it isn't too bad. This month, I did discover that I could do high magnification macro photography without spending any money. It seems that the Nikon 50mm F/1.8 focus grip is precisely wide enough to sit snugly (and without the need for my hand to support it) inside the inner rim of my Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6 lens (if you want the full name, I'll give it to you, but for expediencies sake, I shall omit the rest). This allows me to make Macro images from a magnification ratio of 1.6:1 (1.6x magnification) to 6:1 (6x magnification) (the formula is simple, the focal length of the lens attached to the camera, divided by the focal length of the lens reversed on to its front, for example, if I had the Tamron at 300mm, and the 50mm mounted in reverse onto it, the maths would be 300/50, which equals six).Of course, this method isn't the sharpest option available, and the depth of field is wafer thin (really, less than a millimetre by my reckoning), that and it's hard to get well exposed shots without motion blur (the macro effect vastly magnifies camera movement), but for what I paid for it, or rather, for what I didn't pay for it, it's very much worth it.I've also personally decided that I should take at least one self portrait a month, if for no other reason than to move away from whatever I am fixated on at the time, and to get myself more used to being on the other side of the lens.Truth be told, my self portrait is probably one of my better images this month (though the five thumbnails I have posted are still 'better' in my opinion), however, because it isn't uploaded (yet, at least), I can't add it to the list of images.Besides, it'd be awfully ego-centric if my self portrait should appear twice in as many months The majority of the rest of the images have been fairly 'meh' all in all. This is because I have been running out of potential subjects to photograph. In short, I am running out of ideas, but due to the weather (among other things), I haven't been able to really go outside to take photos, which is quite annoying, really, given that there are a good number of shots that I want to do, that I think would do wonders for my 'hit rate' :B.I guess, for March, the best I can do, is to be a little more inventive in what I photograph, and, additionally, be a little more inventive in how I take the photograph (yes, even I am getting bored of the persistent macro shots that I am posting, particularly since most of them aren't even that interesting).Keep in mind, this report will be tweaked tomorrow when I have the time to upload the extra images, I just wanted to get this report done while it is still the 29th in some places of the world - Tweaked	APhAD last.fm The webcam image is titled 'Pod Bay Doors' by xkcd.com can be found at [link] and is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 License, more info of which can be found at [link] Using IE? browsehappy.com maybe a place you want to go.
Technology is a Wonderful Thing On the march to technological singularity, technology gets better and better, and more and more integrated. It's awesome.Today, you can be out on the street, in a shop, and you see, I don't know, some batteries, but there are so many batteries that you don't know which to choose, or even which ones are the best.Five years ago, you'd have been stuck with simply guessing, or, horrifyingly, researching before you leave your house.Today, you can whip out your phone/PDA/iPhone/whatever, hop onto google, and get the information you need.I don't know about you, but that is really cool, and it's only going to get better. There is one issue with this though, the more technology gets involved in our lives, the more we rely on it, obviously. For some, it's almost like a part of their minds live outside their own head. What prompted this was the fact that my brother had his phone stolen a few hours ago.The saying "you don't know what you've got until its gone" comes to mind.My brother is a very social person (almost the direct opposite of me in many ways). His social life is practically revolves around his phone. When he realised he had his phone stolen. He was lost. Not lost as in 'upset', but lost as in, he didn't know what to do with himself, like someone had plucked a significant chunk of his identity from him.He relied on the phone so much that he hadn't even remembered his own girlfriend's phone number. He hadn't needed to of course, the number was on the phone, and the phone, obviously, has perfect memory. The phone had, in essence, become a fundamental part of his psyche. Part of what has been described as an 'Exo-Cortex'.Some may think he's a fool for relying on his phone. But then mostly all of us who are reading this probably do it to some degree or another. If I lost access to the internet, for example, I'd loose my primary means of communication and work. Some who know me, know that I am a strong believer of post-humanism, where our technology will become a fundamental part of us, where, in some cases, the line between human and machine doesn't exist. At least, that's at the most extreme end of post-humanism.To this end, it's going to get worse before it gets better. We talk of identity theft today as someone taking another persons credit card info, for example. In ten years time, identity theft could be a whole lot more literal than that. Before it gets better, we'll end up relying more and more on technology to do stuff for us, such as remember things, or to get information, or to give us pointers on what we should say, for example, that our brain may end up becoming just a processing node in the middle of a cacophony of information processing being made before it gets to our own heads.Take that information processing part from the person (in whatever form that is), and what are you left with?Somebody with vague memories to their identity. They are the same &#039erson' in that their personality is obviously not dictated by the technology supporting the soft mushy thing between their ears, but they likely won't remember any one or thing. This is bad, of course, and anyone taking this out of context would think I am against this sort of progress.Of course, it gets better when that information processing becomes internalised (making it difficult to actually steal without invasive surgery :B).I guess, my point is that, technology is a good and bad thing. And as we continue on, I fully expect to see this sort of thing happen much more often.
I don't do this often I feel I should write a disclaimer before getting down to it. What I say here may not represent the views of deviantART, it's just what I think. Don't like it? Then tough. Make a comment in the complaints forum or something and blow it out of proportions like you probably will anyway.Which makes me wonder why I bother with a disclaimer in the first place. But hey, better safe than sorry, I suppose.FairExposure This site is awesome, right? more than 50 million deviations to choose from, from just about 6 million people. If I had the time, I could look at one piece of art per second for the rest of my life, and I would not have even scratched the surface. So, really, you need a way of stemming that tide, right? I mean, all those deviations aren't going to be to your tastes, and even if they are, only a certain level of quality (as nebulous a term as that is) will probably make the grade as something you'd really want to look at.dA has really given you lots of options to do that, you can, for example, look only in specific categories, or you can only view daily deviations, or only search for specific search terms. The easiest option though, is to just look at the popular section, since you're invariably going to find some top quality stuff to look at.The thing is, of course, is that the old system was boring, Boring even. Same art, same artists, same subjects, same categories. All just the same.I thought the point of my pursuit in seeing everything was that everything that I was seeing was actually, you know, different, perhaps.I know, that seems to be an alien concept among a lot of people around here, but it seems that difference and change isn't wanted here. No, wait, it is actually wanted here. But when dA actually says 'all right, cool, we hear you, why don't you play with cool new toy that should be just what you asked for', you all get into a hissy fit that everything has changed and that the old system was better. What's worse is that the people complaining about this, are the ones who are most effected by this, and, more crucially, the army of fantards who wait on the orders of the popular generals."Oh deviantART, how you have smite'd thee, with your requested developments, my minion army, attack at once and let's vanquish these foul demons"Or something silly like that.Frankly, this sort of stuff pisses me off.Since the launch of FairExposure, I have found more fav worthy art in the first 120 images on the new popular page, than I have in all the years previously with the old popular page.Rather skewed, you might say, since I have fairly broad likes, but I think that says a considerable amount to the improvement on that section. To put it short, the popular section is now interesting again.I can actually go there and, shock of shocks, find something new and good in there, unlike the previous system which showed good stuff, none of which was new.And even with all that said, the most funny thing I find about this is that, the most popular of the old guard are still virtually guaranteed a place in the first few pages of the new popular system, because they still command their legions of rabid fantards who will fav quite literally anything that the old guard release. The new popular page is awesome, and if you think any different, you clearly haven't really looked at it.Collections Collections are really cool, probably one of the best features released in a very long time. In fact, it's such a good feature that it's almost a paradigm shift.Fortunately, it seems as though there aren't mainly complaining about that (and if they are, they're certainly not as vocal as the FairExposure, err, 'crowd' (see, I can be diplomatic ).The complaints that have shown up are the new ad placements that have popped up that coincide with the collections system."Oh noes, teh adminz going two spout about teh ads when he can't see the ads him self, he can't possibly understand our pain... oh woe is me "I am sick of seeing these complaints too.Yes, I can't see the ads (though I have the option to), so I am not really effected by this, so I have no real 'right' to try to counter complain. What you don't seem to realise, however, is that you get technically infinite storage space and bandwidth (with the only limits being technical ones, I believe), a fully integrated communications system, including comments on all images, on your userpage, in the forums, via notes, and via dAmn, as well as a community of millions to share your art with, in addition to the potential world wide audience to view your art in the hundreds of millions. All for Free. That's right, you pay absolutely nowt for this. All that we ask is that you follow the rules, and suffer the gross indignity and inconvenience of seeing a few ads on this site.I've seen the current ads situation. And frankly, I don't have a clue what the fuck you guys are complaining about.First, dA has a shockingly low number of adverts, particularly given the size of this si...

That time of year again So, apparently, we're getting near to a time called 'Valentines Day'. If memory serves, this is a day for a thing called love.Or some such.To that end, we (or, more precisely @rapidograph) will be e-marrying off a select few individuals (eight ceremonies, so that makes sixteen individuals) in e-wedded bliss. If you want to know more simply click on the image above.Well, not really new but... More of a refresh. 'sine-out Journal Skin 1.5' as it were. Most of the changes are in slight restructuring. For example, I've moved the stamps over to the 'sidebar' (which I have widened to accommodate the stamps too).I've also moved the To Do list and the links block to a popout blob that should appear if you hover your mouse over the top right of the journal (over the 100x30 pixel lighter coloured box). The basic code for doing this is essentially that of the 'About Journal' pop out blob, so it was relatively easy to implement.Of course, with that means that you'll have to use Firefox, or rather, any browser that's not Internet Explorer, since IE isn't too kind to the CSS that enables this (the popout code should work in IE7, but with the CSS limitations, it's not easy to target IE 6 only).Apart from that, the CSS is virtually unchanged. Basically a polish of my previous CSS.One Month On The last day of every month shall mark a recap of my APhAD progress (for those not the wiser, my current photo project).Given that I don't have any other month to base my opinions off, I can't really say if this month was a good, bad, or average one. I found keeping to the schedule pretty difficult, because, more than once this month I was too 'blah' to do anything.Having said that, this month produced four images that I wouldn't be ashamed to show to others, they are: Yes, yes, one is my self portrait, but, that's probably the best image I have taken of myself (and that's saying a lot, since I am none too photogenic, and I am not a big fan of lenses pointed in my general direction). The others are fairly average photo's to many, I am sure, but they've all got something in them that I like, and that I'd like to draw upon in the future.Of course, that's just four out of 30 (I haven't yet uploaded today's photo). That's quite a good hit rate, but that's still only 13.33% of the images this month that I really like.I would like to double that percentage to 25% (okay, not doubling, I am just lazy and rounded to the nearest five ).Of course, this won't be easy since I am fast running out of things to photograph (already) in my house, so expect over this coming month some 'unusual' choices from me :B.Still, if I had to give it a good, bad or average.I'd rate it as 'good'.So I've set the bar, now I've got raise it .Read This I found this in `GH-MoNGo's journal, and I had to help.Problem, of course, was that, with no funds, nor a paypal account, I couldn't actually help. So, the best I can do is help publicise this, to see if we can reach that target. If you read the linked journal, you'll know that not much is being asked, so, whatever you can do to help, would be a step in the right direction.
Using IE? browsehappy.com maybe a place you want to go.It's Live So the site is practically feature complete now, and can be found by clicking on the below image (which is dynamic, so it will update as and when I add new images :B)

Go ahead and look around. There aren't that many images there, but then I've only taken seven photo's so far (the eighth is coming today, being that it's the 8th today :B).
New Year Apparently, it was the new year a week ago. Obviously I am late to the game if I want to make a recap of 2007.

Suffice it to say, I've done quite a bit of growing up and personal development in 2007 and all in all, it was a good year for me (I certainly finished it with more than I started it with).
My Plans My plans for this new year are relatively simple.

1. Get paid for doing website development work (either through self employment or through another company).
2. Loose weight
3. Take more photo's.

I guess you can call them New Years Resolutions, but resolutions are made to be broken which is something I am certainly not intending to do.

Using IE? browsehappy.com maybe a place you want to go.Got some 'splaining to do... So, I figure now is as good a time as any to reveal my master plan.

Most who already know me by more than a cursory 'hey' (I'd hope that at least most of my recent watchers fall into that category, at the least ), have probably had something from me already that'd go some way to explaining what 'A-PhAD' is.

In addition, those who figured out where the hidden message is on my current placeholder page (tip, look in the page source :B), will have a general idea of what 'A-PhAD' actually is.

For those who didn't look, and for those who don't feel inclined to look now, please allow for some copy pasta, in moderation it's good for you.

So what is A-PhAD?

I guess, you can call it a photoblog.
Those of you who read my journals, may remember back a few months ago when I said I wanted to give myself a photo challenge.

This is it, A Photograph A Day, or A-PhAD (pronounced, if you didn't realise already, A-FAD :B)By Me, from the page source of aphotoaday.sineout.com

That pretty much gives the jist of it anyway.

Basically, as mentioned, a few months back (shortly after I got my @, actually), I was feeling a little disillusioned about my work (I still do, if you're interested).
I don't take enough photo's, and those that I do take feel too samey to me. In short, I feel stuck in a rut, and I wanted to get out of it.
So I thought 'hmm, lots of people seem to be doing that 100 themes meme, problem is, I can't draw worth for shit, so I can't do that, ooh, I know, I can set my self a photo challenge, and place stipulations and restrictions on myself to make it useful to me'.

So I got to thinking, as I have been known to do on occasion, and promptly, well, forgot it as a result of being swamped with other stuff to do.

About two weeks back, I suddenly had an epiphany, of sorts.
Well, okay, not really, but I did have a flash of inspiration (which didn't turn out to be very inspirational, since many other people have thought of the idea before me :B), that it wasn't really the photo's themselves that I don't like (though they can be improved, of course), but more the number of photographs I take.

In the two + years or so I've had my D50, I've shot approximately 12,000 frames, since I am a burst shooter, that can be cut down to a third, representing about 5,000 unique images (as it were). As you can see from my gallery, I have about three dozen images (ish), with month spans between each image.

I am too selective, and I don't shoot enough unique photo's, which doesn't help with artistic development, particularly for someone like me, who doesn't actually find the artistic process that easy in the first place (I am, after all, technically minded to a fault).
Okay, okay! Get to the point already! So, yeah, at that point, I realised that, I didn't need stipulations and restrictions, at least not the ones I was thinking of, to stop me for slacking off and just shooting the same stuff over and over again.

If you couldn't tell already, I am quite strict on posting the same subjects more than once, I mean, I've got lots of photo's of places within a minute walking distance of where I live, but I would never post them, under normal circumstances, because I've already posted a photo or two of my location. Okay, more specifically, I don't like uploading multiple photo's from the same location but still the idea is the same.

With how little I shoot, and the only stipulation, that being 'A Photograph A Day', I will be stretched enough as it is just to fulfil that stipulation alone. Such a stipulation, for me, would force my hand, there are only so many things one can shoot (remember, I am technically minded, a good visual imagination when it comes to photography is not my forte :B), so I will have to learn, to develop artistically, to make unique shots out of situations and scenes that I'd either not bother with, couldn't bother with, lacked the ability to bother with, or simply, lacked the motivation to bother with :B.

I am not saying all my images will be ground breaking pieces of modern photographic art.
They won't.
Far from it in fact, most will be experiments, some will be serious attempts at artistry, and the rest will likely be filler material. Indeed, I only intend to upload a handful of the images to dA as bona fide art (as in, the sort of stuff I'd want to put on my walls, or in a portfolio). The rest either being devoted to another project that I will mention in a minute or so (depending on how fast you read, and how much I waffle).

This brings us to the purpose of the website in the first place.
I mean, I am technically minded after all, and I wouldn't want to inundate those of you with a new photo a day when, likely, you probably don't want to see a new image a day from me.
So, what I am currently in the process of designing and planning (actually, just finished, I've already visualised mostly all of the features I'd like to inco...

False Alarm Okay, yeah, false alarm, I should probably look at the page source of the feeds I am using more often, I was able to get the content I needed from elsewhere :B

Of course, that won't stop me from updating my journal skin, but at least I don't have to do it now, which is a major relief, because I am simply not up to battling the various quirks and continual loading needed to tweak a journal skin.
Dammit

Trust me to go make alterations to my website.

'What? The website looks to be working fine, what's wrong with it?'

Well, I am currently in the process of refining the link blog page, after some feedback, and, well, I wanted to include the first hundred and fifty or so characters from each journal entry (so I move away from titling each section with what they are :B).
All fine and dandy methinks, except that I forgot about my little IE message that only displays if you have internet explorer (obviously), which leads to [link] yeah, those descriptions aren't really all that useful now :B.

So guess what I have to do.

I have to make a revision to my journal skin to be able to fix this issue.
Now, I was planning to do this anyway, but I didn't want to do it to get around a problem with my website. But, alas, my website changes will have to wait until I make a new revision of my journal skin.

A good thing for all you people who use it, but, obviously, a bad thing for me, because tweaking a journal skin is a pain (I always prefer to write stuff from scratch, but writing a dA journal skin from scratch, or altering a pre-existing one is a pain either way ).

So yeah at my lack of fore thought :B.

Using IE? browsehappy.com maybe a place you want to go.The Deed is DoneFinally, after about one month of on/off work, I've finally managed to finish my new website.

Technically I have made two new websites.
lewisupperton.com, which is my new personal portfolio and sineout.com/blog, which as the name may suggest, is my new personal blog.

Why the /blog bit?

Well, my previous CV's have pointed to sineout.com as my portfolio website, so, in order to not break that, I set sineout.com to automatically redirect to lewisupperton.com and instead use sineout.com/blog for my blog. Which makes sense really.

The site includes the Link Blog, a normal Text Blog and, when I can get around to recording it, an Audio Blog (podcast).

It goes without saying that a lot of the inspiration for the site came indirectly from ^thespook, what with my ganking his journal skin for the layout of the site, as well as the link blog idea (he has told me that others have done a link blog before, but his site was (and still is) the only that had a link blog :B).

So yeah, enjoy, tell me what you think (either here or on the website).

Using IE? browsehappy.com maybe a place you want to go.Audio BlogIf you have already noticed, I have released a poll, of all things, into the wild.
These things are rare, because, honestly, I don't really need to make them that often.

I had recently been thinking of making myself more or less multimedia (I mean, I've got myself in text here, photo's here and at Flickr, video at Youtube).
Granted, that's quite multimedia in itself, but to be honest, I don't have the time or inclination to write anything that interesting (and when I do I think of many other things to do instead of writing my thoughts), and I am not that comfortable talking to a webcam, because the the disconnectedness of the whole experience.

However, I can talk for England if I want to on a number of subjects and I am much more comfortable talking to a microphone than I am to a webcam (though for both I am not really that comfortable doing same one on one).

Hence the poll.
I've decided that since my main 'audience' comes from this website (most likely), it'd be best to ask that audience. Just makes sense to me really.

If you think you'd want to hear me ramble on for however long I end up making these blog things, then go to the poll [link] click on yes and give me your thoughts on what I should do (keep in mind that my principle interests revolve around science, technology and the future of the human race, among other things ).

Of course, you don't have to give your suggestions there, if you really want you can give them here too.

Any idea will be appreciated and taken into consideration.
RSSPart of what caused me to get thinking of this in the first place was my working on [link]

Basically, it is an RSS feed aggregator that I built to aggregate some of the feeds I manage generate because I couldn't find any myself that could do the job (no doubt someone would point me to one that does exactly what I need making the last three days work pointless :B).

It's not completely finished yet, but if you want I'd be more than willing to zip up the source and send it your way if it interests you at all.

(by the way, if any of you go by way of ^thespook's page, yes, the idea for doing this project was completely ripped from his link blog on his website at [link])
RelationshipThis one has been going pretty good. Still not willing to break the news as to who it is, but I'd find it likely that the regulars of #devart have already figured it out by now .
Where'd that Photo Challenge Go?It's actually still on the cards, it's just that I've been so busy recently that I just haven't thought of the finer points of the challenge before I set it to myself (and anyone else willing to do it as well, I suppose).

Worry not though (if you were worried that is). When I get some free time I will share my plans for world domination the challenge .

So, what am I up to, what's going on and stuff?
I'm still plugging along and trying to make myself worthy of my @. Six (or is it seven now?) weeks on and I think I am starting to settle in. You know, build a rapport, be recognised, feared and respected all at the same time, the usual stuff .

I've also been processing some more personal stuff and have some exciting developments in that area.
As an example, it is entirely possible I will be going to the Scottish Devmeet in January (contact =InvaderMar or =wings777, I think they will have more info for you, possibly), which will be pretty damn cool.

There have also been developments in my relationship status too, and I am pretty stoked about where the developments will lead.

Aside from that, I've little else to report, hows things been going for you guys then?

That's not bad, all things considered, but I could do far better.
My main issue is that, while I generally take a camera with me at all times now (and generally I always have my D50 in my bag too), the fact is, I just don't take any photo's.

Personally, this just isn't good enough.

So, I thought I'd give myself a challenge.
Initially, I set myself to make at least one photo per week. However in my opinion, that was still too lax.
So my next idea was a photo every other day, with stipulations that only one of those per week can be cloud focused (since clouds are my thing, it seems).
The next most obvious stipulation was that these photos must be good enough for posting on dA, and not on my Flickr account (which I am using more and more as a 'rejects' gallery).

I've not yet set this challenge, mainly because I want feedback from you guys to make it harder, or fairer or what have you.

So yeah, suggestions plz.

Hey, not much to say, just wanted to add this to replace the previous journal

Just so you all know, if you didn't already, Weekend Run Donations came to $9,028.35. Nice one guys.
CSS
You've probably also noticed that this is yet another journal layout.
Yes, sorry but I've never been a fan of sticking to such things for too long and I figured the journal needed a little spruce up.
That being said, the side bar of the previous design has continued on rather unscathed (because it is a nice convenient place to put small links images in).
A New Face
Yup, if you haven't now, you probably will within the next few days, but we have a new face to the MN@.
So, with that in mind, go welcome @parliamentFunk to the team.

Update
Just to let you all know, this is the last day for donations, we are as of current writing, nearing the $9K mark, lets see if we can get it to $10K.

PS, I also heard that ^StJoan might be doing noodz at $12K

Introduction
For the past 5 years our very own $Moonbeam13 has been involved in supporting and raising money for The Weekend To End Breast Cancer event in Toronto.

She has done this in a fairly quiet and discreet way so we felt it was time to shed a bit more light on what exactly she does for this great cause.

To give a bit of background, in the past 4 years this organization has raised over 60 million dollars in donations and through this has made some landmark strides in advancing the research on breast cancer, which claims the lives of close to 50,000 women a year and about a quarter million women diagnosed per year.
This money does make a big difference in helping with in depth gene studies and creating specialized programs for people diagnosed with the disease.

The Weekend To End Breast Cancer takes place all across Canada. In Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and $Moonbeam13's hometown of Toronto, where for the last 4 years and soon to be 5, she has participated in the 60k walk. That’s 37.28 miles to you Americans.
To participate in the walk, each person must raise $2000 to qualify and that is no easy task in and of itself. As of right now she has raised about 2600 dollars but we think she can do much better than that with the help of a community of 5 million strong!

This year the event takes place September 8th and 9th, so time to help is limited.

So how can can you help? Read on!

Well, you can add these stamps to your journal with a link back to this article for starters.

How Do I Donate? Donations are the most important thing you can do here, so to sponsor $Moonbeam13 directly go to this link and follow the simple instructions there! Make sure to leave your deviantART name so she knows who to thank, unless you prefer to remain anonymous of course.

Alternately you can donate direct to the organization here.

Other Ways To Show Support Dye your hair pink, wear something pink or do a piece of art in pink and upload it to your gallery and link back here so we can spread the word to as many people as possible!

And feel free to come join us Saturday September 8th at noon PST on dAmn in #FightLikeaGirl for games and events of a pinktastic nature!

( To check your local time please refer to The World Clock )

Also, if you are in the Toronto area and wish to cheer the walkers on in person you can check out this this flyer here for a list of the Cheering Stations!

So, now it is up to you to go out there and help support your mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, nieces and girlfriends in the best way possible!

Things I've Learned So Far
is my new adopted emoticonI actually use emoticons, and I never used emoticons in the forumswhen you get an @, at least for the first few days, don't expect to do as you did before you got your @. I've hardly contributed to the forums since I got mine (aside from locking some threads of course).I actually like dAmn more than I thought, and I am actually able to use it better than I realiseI like devart and some of the people there (they ought to know who they are)I use chat speak in an ironic sense a lot more than I thought I wouldI am quite strict (apparently) in devartbanning people isn't as simple as typing /banNo matter how cynical you are, if you become an @ or anything else here, even you would be surprised by the stupidity shown by some peopleIt is useful to be a Firefox userMultitasking is a prerequiste skill that you must have, if you don't have it, you had better hope that you learn quickly. You're expected to fuck up, so don't worry if you do, be happy that the rest of the team are more than capable of stopping the sky from falling on you.Get a comfortable chair, you'll be in it for the foreseeable future.Oh, and you learn lots of stuff too
There is more to add to that list, but at present I am a little too scatter-brained to care. Expect it updated within the next few days as I learn more new and exciting things about being an @.

Oh and thanks for the all the congrats messages. If I have ignored you it's not because I want to but because saying 'thanks' or 'cheers' that many times might make me snap.

But Wait, There's More!
Ho shi- really!
In fact there is quite a bit more actually.
First, if you couldn't tell, I have got myself a new phone/camera, the Nokia N73, so expect to see some bits from that dotted around my various residences.
Second, if you couldn't tell, I am a member of Flickr (link is at the top of this journal), which is where you're most likely to see pictures from the aformentioned.
Third, I have added a few userstyles to my userstyles.org account (again linked above), they may prove useful to at least some of you.

Okay, now I am tapped out, I will try to think of more later on to make this journal entry more interesting.Stamp Collection

My FlickrMy YouTubeMe on userstyles.orgMy WebsiteMy Other Website (Under Construction)Youtube
So, yeah, it's been a long time since I wrote my last journal entry.
Not a whole lot is new, one of the biggest 'additions' addictions, is youtube.
So, I thought 'Hey, I'm sure I've got something interesting to say'. So, I made myself an account.
Hurray me! And you too, since you can now see my ugly mug animated in full motion video goodness (or badness depending on how you look at it).
Anyway, I can be found at [link] if you're so inclined for that sort of masochism.

Despite that though, I still haven't really thought of anything that interesting to say, but hey, I'll find it eventually. Honest.

Licenses
So, yeah, if any of you regulars here (I'm sure I have like, one or two, possibly, maybe) wander around my gallery, you'll notice that practically all the images in my gallery have been licensed up.

I've actually been meaning to do this for a bit of time, but never could really be bother to do it. Plus I kind of thought that there'd be little point anyway, since my images likely won't be that useful to anyone anyway. Which, obviously, further made me not bother to do it.

Tonight (well morning for me) I went and twiddled with my gallery, and now all but one of my images (my ID) have the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license.

Why that one in particular?
Well, all creative commons are Attribution, so even if I wanted a choice in that matter, I wouldn't have been able to change it anyway.
I chose share-alike because, basically, the whole point of the creative commons is the free sharing of artistic pieces for incorporation in any artist medium. So having a No-Derivs license would kind of go counter to that.
On the other hand, having no restriction on the use (except for attribution) would also go counter, because someone could take one of my images, and they'd not be required to offer their art in the same manner as I have.
To this end, 'Share-Alike' is the ideal because it encourages the spread of the license and its ideals.
Basically, if you got something due to the good nature of others it's only right that you offer the results of using that something to other people.
Share and Share-Alike indeed.

If you also want to know, all the web stuff that I write (as in, stuff that I have written in PHP and/or has otherwise taken a long time to make) is released under the GNU GPL v2, and my HTML and CSS code examples (what few I have done) are normally released public domain, so I definitely don't just offer this to my art, I basically offer this to all my 'creative' pursuits.

You know, this has given me an idea for a video...Stamp Collection

Yup, I'm sure you have noticed it by now, I've, once again changed the CSS.
Wander around, tell me what you think, tell me what you'd change.
Getting a Life? Me? Never!
So, since I've last updated, I've actually got up off my back side and actually started to do something more productive than wandering the dA forums all day.
Namely, I'm working for TheTrenchExperience.com, where I have been given the task of developing the website (that means I have to redesign it then code it).

In the process, I have been learning a few things so I can actually do the job. Namely, I've finally gotten around to learning MySQL (and, consequently, I've basically learned how to use any other SQL based language that can be used with PHP), which means I can finally write a content management system that I have been planning for a very long time now.
Of course, even with that in mind, it'll take a long time, but still, I at least have the basic knowledge to get started now.

On top of that I have just this week started a course at [link] which means that, surprise of surprises, I may actually end up with a qualification that proves my 'skills' and a paying job (thetrenchexperience is a charity, so I'm not paid) at the end of it. Assuming I pass, of course, but I don't expect I'll have any trouble with that.

So yeah, a few noteworthy changes in my life that will get me out of my house and into the sun. And, maybe, just maybe, interacting with more than just my computer.
Speaking Of...
Having watched Sunshine yesterday, I highly advise you go see it, it is a very good film.Stamp Collection

y'wha?
So I've finally pulled my thumb out and actually done something productive with my time. And that is implement my new site design.
It can be seen in all its magnificence at sineout.com (doy!).
With that being said, it is still far from done, among my list of things to do are
Add images to the wallpapers galleryAdd text to the gallery pageAdd navigation to the image 'full views'Look into implementing a light box for the image 'full views'Improve the Site navigation (it's a bit pants at the moment)Make internal site links neater (for example, instead of gallery.php?gallery=photography&image=2348, I'd have photography/2348)Fix all the inevitable spelling errors and grammer (hurr, see what I did there?) cock-upsPlus anything else I can think of
So yeah, it's sort of done, but not. It's just done enough to show to the general public.

Enjoy.

Oh, and...
Could you take a look at This Website and just give me some feedback on it?
Since I'm working on it, it'd be nice to get some external opinions of the website before I start making major changes.

Meet Bitrate.
Bitrate is a calculator I made to save me from the tedious bit rate calculations I often make to find out if encoding my music at certain, err, bit rates will fit on to my MP3 player.
Yup, that's all it does, right there.
Amazing, isn't it.

Jobs
Jobs indeed.
Basically, I need to pad out my CV/Resume a little. If you're someone who needs a website layout coded. Or you just want your website worked on. Then, I'd be more than willing to help, for free.
If you need to see an example of my 'work', go to sunstamp.com, there, I coded the layout and I coded the news and gallery systems too.

So, it's finally happened.
There's no real easy way to say it, so I'll just say it.
My Cat, Henry, has died early this morning (my morning anyway) from old age it seems.
Which is not too surprising since my cat has been 'showing his age' more and more frequently as of late.

May you rest in peace friend, and I hope you're having a good time in your kitty heaven.

Not got much else to say.

I Hate Them
I can't emphasise it enough, I fucking hate needles.
I'm sure most of you are laughing about that (or, at least, I am sure that I am paranoid, either one, it doesn't make much of a difference), but I do.

Why?
Well, I go in to get my blood taken so it can be all nice and tested, and, you know what happens?
I don't bleed! The ruddy nurse couldn't find a vein in either of my arms, and now, I've got two bruises on the insides of my elbows which hurt every time I move my arms.
Then, when she tried one last time, I practically pass out from being so light headed that she, wisely, thought I should be rescheduled.

Me and needles have never gotten along.
Just the thought of them makes my skin crawl, I mean, I can almost tolerate it if someone is injecting something into me (as long as I am breathing some nice Nitrous Oxide), but getting stuff out of me just puts me over the edge, just the thought of a needle being inside my arm, where it could move around, is not a pleasant one, especially given how much I tend to over think things.

Yeah, just wanted to get out my all consuming hate for needles there.

Stats Aren't Important
Or so they say.
Regardless of what is said, reaching five digits in the forum post counter is something that, well, is just nice, really. Sure, that number doesn't really mean much on its own, but it does mean that I thought it necessary to voice my opinion on many varied topics, just because I could.

When I was just a newbie on the internet, I was over-awed by those in forums who had monolithic post counts.
Sad as it may sound now, I wanted to be like that. I wanted to have contributed to a community, in one way or another, to that extent.
deviantART was the first website (and, therefore, the first forum) that actually enabled me to do this.
And, so, two and a half years after starting here, I've hit 10,000.
By no means a record breaking number, and, certainly, by no means did I get there the quickest, however, regardless of all that, it is still a milestone.

I was even lame enough to screenshot the 'momentous' occasion visible in the deviation below.

I love the Internet
I'll freely admit, when it comes to my various coding endeavours lately, I've been pretty damn lax.
For example, I've been working on a gallery system that I plan to implement into sunstamp.com, and, while it is 'ready' to be implemented and work satisfactorily, I'm still not comfortable with it.
Not because I think there is something wrong with it, no, it's because it's just not quite as ready as I would want it to be to implement into my own site.

Any of you who have visited my site before, should at least have passing familiarity with the fact that I use my own website as a testing ground for my projects.
Both my News System - Slog, and Style Switcher - TinySwitcher are two examples of that.

So, it'd stand to reason that, before I go off and implement this system into someone else's website, I should get it to a standard that I'd want to implement it into my own website.
Sounds reasonable to me at least.

But, alas, I just can't be arsed at the moment. To put it bluntly.
I also want to work on Slog too, however, just like the gallery system, I am just too damn lazy to do anything about it. Why? Because it works. Of course, that isn't good enough, it works, but it's not exactly what I'd call a prime piece of software (if it could be defined as such). Not even close.

You're probably wondering what my point is in this little diatribe against myself.

Well, it has everything to do with the title of this flowery little journal. Steganography, or, as Wikipedia so eloquently puts it

"the art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one apart from the intended recipient knows of the existence of the message"

Huh? I may hear some of you asking? (and if I actually did, you've got quite a set of lungs!)

Well, Steganography is the art of hiding messages in a way that isn't noticeable. It is not too dissimilar to Cryptography. Except for one crucial factor.
Cryptography makes it plainly obvious that there is a message, and that it is hidden.
Steganography hides the message by making it not even visible in the first place.

A classic example would be to write a simple message (such as a shopping list), and, with in that message, with invisible ink, write the actual message.

Still you're probably wondering what I am talking about.

Well, one thing that Steganography does, is hide messages. This we know. So, it has been implemented in doing just that by some companies.
I'm interested in 'watermarking'. Something that will watermark an image Steganographically with a piece of text or a simple image, yet is, by the nature of steganography, completely invisible to the eye.

Unlike normal watermarks, which are visible, and therefore editable, this sort of watermark will stay with the image for it is entire life. No matter the touch-ups, the resaves and the manipulations.
In one way or another, the steganographic watermark will survive, at least partially.

Most of you may know a company that does this. That company is called Digimarc.

Of course, because of my knowledge (or lack thereof), I doubt I'd be able to make something as effective as their system. And, likely, I shouldn't anyway, lest I get myself into some dangerous legal territory.
No, what I want to do, is do this in PHP, if nothing else but for the fact that I don't know any other programming language, and, if I did do it there, it should be translatable into any other C based language from there anyway.

I think that should get me interested in actually getting my arse into gear.
I bloody well hope it does anyway, I've got to do something.

RSI
On a completely unrelated note. I think I may be developing a little bit of a carpal tunnel problem, what with the fact that I've reduced grip strength in my left hand (that's actually being a little generous, my left hand has about the strength of a wet noodle and the coordination of a sailor on a bender), and my pinky and ring fingers tingle and are numb.
So yay me! My first potentially RSI induced injury. Had to happen eventually, I suppose.

Of course, that's not confirmed.
I should probably go to a doctor about that.

Went to the doctor. Seems like I was wrong, apparently, my symptoms perfectly match those of having a pinched nerve in my C8 vertebrate (if I understood what she said properly, that is).
Of course, it isn't 100%, since other potential causes haven't been ruled out (such as diabetes), so, on the 12th, I'll be getting my blood tested just to make sure.
If it isn't diabetes (and I find it unlikely, since I am not showing, nor feeling, any other potential symptoms), then, it's likely that the original diagnoses is true.

Speaking of my Website...
I've been hankering for a new website layout lately. Given that my current layout is nearing it's three month birthday, it's time it flown the coop for pastures new, and give another layout a chance.
So, I made a new one, which can be found right [link] there.
