If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. Commission info!-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+(Pass this on! Or, if you think it's worth it, please favorite my news article on this contest. Thanks!)Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to go to Wintersweet's AutoShoujo Random Title Generator, pick a title, imagine a series/story based on that title, and to create a picture depicting the FRONT AND BACK COVER for either a DVD, manga, or book of the story you imagined. This should be your artwork, concept, and characters, not fan art or using anyone else's work. You may find the current contest entries at this link. The front cover should have the title you used on it, and the back cover should have a short blurb describing the story in such a way as to make people want to read or watch it. Look at the backs of manga, books, and DVDs to see how that's done. If the text is too small to read in the picture, also put it in the description.Successful entries will be ones that show evidence in the art and back-cover blurb that the creator(s) has put thought into the story and characters. Technical skill is less important than making us want to read or watch this story!Prizes:1st prize: $30 gift certificate to Amazon.com, or dickblick.com, or cash via Paypal.2nd prize: $20 gift certificate to Amazon.com, or dickblick.com, or cash via Paypal.3rd prize: $10 gift certificate to Amazon.com, or dickblick.com, or cash via Paypal.Deadline: Sunday, August 16th.Rules:1. You may submit up to three entries, as long as they use different titles.2. Collaborations welcome! However, if a collaboration wins first through third place, the prize will be divided among the people who collaborated: i.e., if Jane Li and Sabrina Schmidt collaborate on an entry and win the $30 first prize, Jane will get $15 and Sabrina will get $15.3. The cover you make does not have to be the first in a series; for example, you could come up with a cover for volume 3 of a manga series if you wanted.4. You can put the front and back cover in one picture, or make them two pictures and upload them separately.5. Upload your picture to somewhere like DeviantArt, Photobucket, Flickr, Livejournal, etc. and EMAIL me, Telophase, the LINK to it at telophase14 (at) gmail (dot) com with AUTOSHOUJO ENTRY in the subject line. DO NOT send the image itself to me, just a link. (The subject line is just to help me find them in my inbox; you won't be disqualified if you get it wrong). Email is the best way to send it - if you send it via a note or comment on DeviantArt or LJ, I might miss it. If you have not received a "Got it, thanks!" reply within three days of sending it, email and ask if I've gotten it.6. All entries will be listed on http://www.magatsu.net/autoshoujo-cover-contest. If you wish to have yours removed after the contest is over, please contact Telophase at telophase14 (at) gmail (dot) com.7. If you have any questions, please ask!8. The entries will be judged by a panel of three judges - Telophase, Wintersweet, and someone to be chosen shortly.=============================FAQ (To be added to as questions come up)Q. Can elements in the picture be traced?A. Yes, provided that (a) they are from photos you took, or (b) you own the rights to the photo or picture (for example, if you bought it on istockphoto.com), or (c) the photo or picture is in the public domain. Public domain does NOT mean any picture found on Google Images - if you are not sure if a picture is in the public domain, send me a link to the site you found it on and I'll see if I can tell. Or try morguefile.com, sxc.hu, or imageafter.com for free stock photos. You might want to link to the pictures you used in the description of the pic to prove that you didn't trace the whole picture, so we can judge how much creativity you used in the overall composition.Q. If I get inspired by the generator, can I create a whole story from it?A. Absolutely! Obviously, it's not part of the contest, but if you get inspired by the generator and write/draw a story based on a title from it, it's all yours! You can do whatever you want with it! I know that ~wintersweet would be thrilled to know that her generator inspired creativity in someone.Q What's the official policy, if any is needed, on the unlikely event of competing entries with the same title?A. Since it's impossible for any given contestant to know if somebody else managed to get the same title in the generator (although it's unlikely), they will be treated exactly like any other entry. If one person submits two entries with the same title, I will assume that the second submission is meant to replace the first and remove the first one from the competition, as per Rule 1. I would rather people exercise their creative muscles and try a different title.Q. Can there be a special No-Prize for the best series that is emphatically NOT described in any coherent way by it...

If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. Commission info!-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+Lately, I've run across some people complaining about artists charging a lot of money at conventions for their work. The people complaining are upset that they can't afford art. What they don't know is how expensive it is to sell the art. Here's the breakdown, with actual costs and intake, from the convention I just went to:I took in $562 over the weekend from selling prints, comics, kanzashi (hair accessories), and one $10 commission. Sounds great, huh? Think again.Hotel bill: $162.70 This is because I was sharing with one other person. It would have been twice that if I'd come alone.Gas: $20 It was a 3.5 hour drive.Table cost: $70 This included my badge.Ink: $35 This is low - I didn't do a full round of printing for this con, just filled in a few. But I basically went through six ink tanks to do it.Paper: $37 Low again, as I was filling in from leftover stock from the previous con. If you counted all the prints I had left over from previous, the amount it cost me for ink and paper triples. I choose to regard it as a sunk cost, as the money was already spent.Food: $50 Rough guess. Sodas during the day to stay awake, lunch, dinner. Breakfast is included in the hotel cost as I ordered in because if I don't eat a real breakfast in the morning, it can trigger a migraine, which means I don't sell at all.Kanzashi supplies: $50 Rough guess. Probably more.Rachel: $30 My writer. When I sell the books that she and I worked on, we split the money. I sold $60 worth, so she gets $30.Total costs: $454.70Sales tax: 8.25% - $46.30Yes, this means I profited a whopping $61.00 for three days' work. I was at my table from 2-6 on Friday, 9 - 7 on Saturday, and 9-2 on Sunday. 19 hours of work means I made $3.21 for every hour I put in. That is, if you don't count the hours I spent printing, making art, making kanzashi, and such. If you put *that* in, I'm taking a huge loss. Which is why I don't consider it. My art and crafts are a hobby, and my rule for hobbies is that they have to pay for themselves, and that's what I'm doing with this.So the next time someone complains that artists price their work too high and that they should charge less? I CANNOT CHARGE LESS. --MusingsNow ... there are places I can reduce expenses. Not the artwork itself - I'm not compromising on quality there. I could, say, find more roommates. Or bring bread and peanut butter to eat three meals a day. Hell, no. These conventions are also a vacation for me - one of my hobbies is attending conventions. If I have to stay in another godforsaken crash room with 123 of my closest friends, or eat peanut butter for three days, it's not worth it. I'm not giving myself migraines so you can have cheap art. I am also going to these cities to hang out with friends and eat dinner with them. I'd rather not go at all than deny myself that pleasure, and I'm not complaining about it - just telling you so that you understand where I'm coming from. It's also a slow economy right now, and people are running scared. Last year, I might have made a little more, but the overall costs would remain the same, and my profit would not have been that much more. It was also a smaller con. A larger con would allow me to sell more, but my productions costs would be correspondingly higher. Six of one, half dozen of the other. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.I probably ought to raise prices+, but I've experimented with prices a lot, and I think that if I raise them much higher, I sell fewer items, so the overall intake remains about the same. I'm not posting this to ask for tips on reducing costs, and such will be ignored. This entire endeavor is a hobby, and I'm doing it to recoup my expenses. This post is a public service announcement that I can link to the next time I run across someone complaining about how much artists charge for their work in artist alleys.---And oh, yeah: you might now understand why I am saying COMMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN.
If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+I was painting on the Matsumoto picture, and realized that if I took a screenshot, I'd have a really good example of how to use reference. There's WAY too many people out there with no idea of what "reference" really means. Some think it means tracing. Some think it means copying exactly. Unfortunately, no. Those are, respectively, tracing and copying. If I have a live model in front of me and I am drawing her likeness, she is not my REFERENCE. She is my SUBJECT. It's the same for a photo - if you're copying the photo, it is your subject, not your reference.Reference is when you take a source picture, whether it's a photo or painting or drawing or sketch, and use it to apply SOME things to your picture. You can reference a pose. You can reference lighting. You can reference gravity, or folds, or volumes, or whatever aspect you want.In this case, I'm referencing lighting. I found a picture of a young woman with a round face - because I really did not want Western-model cheekbones in this picture - whose head was turned away from the camera at basically the same angle Matsumoto's was, and with light coming from the direction I wanted. Actually, it was coming at the exact opposite angle, so I had to flip the picture horizontally.Click here to see the full-size pic (because DA is weird and makes everything after the link a link if I try to use the thumbnail image below as a link). You can see that while I'm using the basic pattern of light, Matsumoto's features are not the same as that of the model in the picture. Eye shape, mouth shape, lip shape, face shape are all different. I don't even have the lighting exact, because I threw an Inner Shadow layer style on to exaggerate the shadows on the right side of the face.=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=DEVIANTS ACCEPTING COMMISSIONS:(In alphabetical order)=Cacodaemonia [link]~Elizabeth-EvilChibi~FallenSiren [link]~fleetfoot*Ilenora [link]~Kauritsuo~Linake [link]=Miyukitty [link]=nightambre~Salahare [link]=ScorpionOcean [link]~Sydia~TalentlessAssassin~Wolverina*wyndstar [link]=Yugima(Wanna be on this list? He's a digital painter in the UK, and this video here is a speeded-up demo of a painting he did in Photoshop. The DVD tutorial contains the whole thing in real time, plus full commentary. I'm about halfway through watching it right now and can't wait to try the techniques. And what he does is something I like - instead of copying the photo directly, he takes it and changes it a bit, emphasizing some aspects and changing the mood. His site is here. You can buy the DVD directly, or pay a chunk less for the downloaded version, if you've got a fat pipe and can download 3 zip files that equal a bit over 3 gigs of data. The exchange rate is in my favor right now - I paid a little over $10 for the download, and consider it a bargain for what I'm learning.=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=DEVIANTS ACCEPTING COMMISSIONS:(In alphabetical order)=Cacodaemonia [link]~Elizabeth-EvilChibi~FallenSiren [link]~fleetfoot*Ilenora [link]~Kauritsuo~Linake [link]=Miyukitty [link]=nightambre~Salahare [link]=ScorpionOcean [link]~Sydia~TalentlessAssassin~Wolverina*wyndstar [link]=Yugima(Wanna be on this list? It would also help me if you just happened to feel like making a MangaBullet account after clicking through. What are the advantages of that? Well, it's one more set of username and password to remember! Yet another page to update periodically! Another site full of derivative anime fanart! (And, to be honest, some really nice stuff.) Er, not so enticing, huh? Well, you can commission me for art and kanzashi through their system and (a) not have to calculate my wacky commission algorithm yourself and (b) since you pay in advance and the $$ is deposited with MB, I am thus aware that you have already paid and feel significantly more guilty about it and get to it faster. And if I am the top referrer this month, I'll apparently get some sort of prize. What prize? I have absolutely no idea! Which is, perversely, why I want to win: because I want to see what it is. XD (My top bet is paid account time, but I don't know for sure. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+Many items in my gallery can be sold as prints. Check here for information.Commission information-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+I got a copy of Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt the other day. It's a book containing the history and descriptions of 50 traditional Japanese supernatural creatures, organized into a "What to do if you encounter one" sort of way. Despite the gimmick, it contains a lot of interesting, solid information on the creatures, which get 3-4 pages each. Which is a relief, because I was afraid it'd be a book of bullet-pointed factoids that didn't offer any more information than was already available in English. And it contained quite a few yokai I hadn't already heard about. It's illustrated by Tatsuya Morino, and I liked the illustrations more than I thought I would when I heard about the style - there's a certain style of cartoony that really just turns me off inexplicably, but he avoids that. There's also several reproductions of period illustrations from the 18th and 19th centuries, along with photos and pictures of other variations. There were a couple of spots where the authors got a fact I knew (not about yokai) slightly wrong, which makes me wonder what I *didn't* know about that was wrong, but overall, it seems pretty solid.*So - good to get if you want something a little more pop-culture to read while waiting for the more scholarly Pandemonium and Parade: Japanese Monsters and the Culture of Yokai next month, or if you don't want to deal with the more academic tone of the latter.--* Rant time! The one I remember was referring to Murasaki, the author of The Tale of Genji as a courtesan, which is pretty much dead wrong. Courtier is closer to her station, and I think they might have mixed it up with concubine, which isn't right, either, but at least has connotations of a woman in a royal court. Lady-in waiting is really the best approximation that exists in English. It's not a matter of mere semantics, because the primary purpose of courtesans and concubines is to provide sexual companionship for men (intellectual also, for courtesans), while courtiers and ladies in waiting are high-born people who provide social and intellectual companionship for men and women - historically women for women and men for men. Rather a large difference in social status there! Murasaki was a companion to the Empress, not a bedmate for the Emperor.I really hope they meant courtier and an over-eager copy editor changed it to courtesan.**** Now watch the book actually read courtier and I made this whole thing up. XD It's been a couple of days since I read it - I really ought to double-check the passage when I'm at home and make sure I remembered it correctly.(ETA: Forgot to add that if you click on the links above, they go to Amazon.com. If you buy the book after clicking that link, I get a few pennies back. It helps fund the Project Blue Rose site. IT'S A BOOK!Project Blue Rose is in its third printing! Spindrift is in its first! And, naturally, because I am nothing if not hypocritical, I looked at all the comments, went "I can't face replying to all of these" and did a mass delete. XD But I did read every one of them! And feel vaguely guilty for not replying! And to focus this back on art, I'll share my TERRIBLY DEEP INSIGHT that I had yesterday as I was lecturing aiding someone who'd asked for advice. It wasn't something I didn't already know, but it's something that managed to collapse into words. It goes back to my conviction that the pictures that people respond to the best tell some sort of story, and that the characters in them have some sort of relationship, either with each other or with the objects they're interacting with, or with their environment. A character passively standing there, gazing out at the viewer, is boring, no matter hoe technically skilled the artist is. None of which explains how to make a basic portrait, which is pretty much defined as the character gazing out at the viewer*, compelling. The answer to that is that the character does have a relationship: a relationship with YOU, the viewer. The story in the picture is what is going on between YOU and the character as you look at it.It's all about creating an emotional reaction and/or connection within the viewer about the picture. It could be as simple as a laugh, or "Awwwww! Cuuute!" or something more complex that encourages the viewer to gaze at the picture for a long time. But no matter how you cut it, a picture with the main character standing there gazing vaguely over the viewer's left shoulder just isn't going to cut it.--* I know there's exceptions, like John Singer Sargent's Portrait of Madame X, but you'll note that Madame X has a relationship (physical interaction) with the table and the fan and her dress, and her right hand is full of tension - she's not just standing there passively gazing into the distance. For a bit more entertainment read here and here about the Great Shoulder Strap Scandal of 1884.IT'S A BOOK!Project Blue Rose is in its third printing! Spindrift is in its first! Wouldn't be a problem if I could use PHP, as I've done that before, but we're an ASP shop here (blarg) and I only know bits and bobs of that. Right now, my biggest problem is that HTML tags don't come through - they're in the feed, but the parser doesn't even notice them. I'd tell the bloggers to avoid formatting, but the problem is ... we're a library and we need to do things like italicize titles and link to databases. That's what the entire point of having a What's New? blog is about.I'm just going to put my head down here on my desk and take a nap...(Don't forget - if you think you're going to participate in the Yuletart Secret Fanart Exchange this year, wander over and nominate fandoms for inclusion!)IT'S A BOOK!Project Blue Rose is in its third printing! Go ye forth and nominate! (And don't forget to add supporting comments for fandoms you'd like to see in it, as the mods will take them into account when coming up with the final List o' Fandoms.)===If you participated in the Yuletart fanart exchange last year, nominations for fandoms are now open! They're doing the nomination process this year to ensure easier matches between artists and recipients. If you participated last year, your nominated fandoms will definitely appear on the set list, and if you are going to be a new participant, then (a) it depends on how much support that fandom gets and (b) you get to start nominating on the 20th. It can be any fandom except Harry Potter. So far I've nominated Mushishi, Samurai Deeper Kyo, and Blade of the Immortal. Haven't decided on the other two yet, because they ask that you nominate 5 fandoms only, and stick to ones you're seriously considering asking for. You'll be able to request *anything* you want, of course, as long as you request something that shows up on the list. xxxHolic and Mononoke were two I was considering, but as they're already nominated, I don't need to.
If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+As part of the Recoup =telophase's Moving Expenses Project, I'm opening up prints for sale. Most of the pictures in my DeviantArt gallery can be made into prints, but there are a few that I've lost the original files on, so don't send Paypal monies without making sure that I *can* send them. At some point I'll make a nice list of what's actually available, but as I'm working on about 4 hours sleep right now, it'll be later.Prices! 8x10" - $10 for the first, $5 for all subsequent11x17" - $20 for the first, $10 for subsequent 11x17" and $5 for subsequent 8x10"(No, of course I'm not encouraging you to buy more than one!)Paypal, check, money order, artfully concealed cash OK. Note me or email me at telophase14 (at) gmail (dot) com. They'll be either around 8x10" (on 8.5x11" paper) or 11x17"ish (on 13x19" paper) - you can usually tell which is which by the proportions of the piece. If you're not sure, ask me. I can also put the 11x17" ones on 8.5x11" paper for the lesser price, but they won't look quite as good.Shipping!Shipping is $5 for 8x10" and $7 for 11x17" for the US and Canada. I'll have to go poke about the US Post Awful's website for other countries and will quote you. On the bright side, you can get as many prints as you want for either shipping price, as they'll fit nicely into a photo mailer or a mailing tube. (I don't think Drum Beat Heart Beat looks particularly good at the 11x17" size, since the figure is out of focus, so I'd suggest it as an 8x10". But if you reeeeally want to have an 11x17" of it, I'll sell you one with a Buyer Beware caveat.)Keychains!I can do any of the Bleach and Death Note chibis as 6x6" prints for the 8x10" price ('cause they're on the same size paper). And you can get keychains of them for $3 each! Or 4 for $10!Photographs!I have 11 of my photographs from Japan up at telophase.imagekind.com, where you can buy prints. I can make prints of those also, for my prices, but it's less expensive to buy the larger versions from that site (plus you can get a biiig size, that's around 16 x 24", from them for only $16ish!).IT'S A BOOK!Project Blue Rose is in its third printing!
4/12/2009 - Commissions open for the month of April! If I don't get to your slot in the queue in April, I will be doing it in June, as I'm reserving May for A-Kon prep.=================================The boring bits:Payment process: You can thank the person who commissioned me and stiffed me for my new policy requiring half the payment in advance, with the rest due when the image is done before I send you the final full-size version. Process: I'll send you a sketch, which I admit may be messy because I'm a messy sketcher, and you can make suggestions and ask for changes then. After that, any more changes will add to the final cost. When it's done, I'll send you a low-resolution watermarked image, and once the payment is finished, I'll send you the full-resolution file/print/original/whatever.Payment forms: And you can thank the person at a con who wrote me a bum check (where I discovered that if I cash a bum check, I'm responsible for the fees AND the amount of the check. Luckily it was a $6 check, so I'm only out $11 total) for me no longer accepting checks. I'll accept Paypal, Amazon.com gift certificates, concealed cash, credit card via Paypal (you don't need a Paypal account), and money orders.=================================Examples below.Base rates (1 character, simple or no background, 8x10 inch)CG chibi - $20 (6x6 in.)CG B&W linework - $30CG flat or cel color - $40CG toned - $35CG painted - $75CG realism - $100+ (Talk to me about what you want and I'll quote - it depends how long it will take me to do)Photomanip (make your photo look like an oil painting!) - $40 Rendered pencil - $50Marker - $60Additional characters - +$5 eachA more elaborate background - +$5Larger canvas (11 x 17" for CG, 16 x 20" for traditional) - +25% base costWhat you get:You get a high-resolution file emailed to you that you can print, make icons of, post on your journal, whatever, as long as you credit me. If you want a high-quality print (CG) or the original (traditional) mailed to you, that's $5 postage for the US and Canada. Note me for a quote for other countries.Note:I reserve the right to sell prints of the result. If you want exclusive image rights - which means I can't sell prints - that's an additional 50% of the base cost.=======CONTENT:Fan art or original characters are fine. I'll draw up to an R rating. I'm comfortable with artistic nudity and suggestive situations with characters over the age of 18, and will age non-18 characters. Check my gallery here and at [link] for examples. I'm comfortable with any combination of genders.=======Examples:CG chibi: CG B&W linework: CG flat or cel color: CG toned:(I need to make a few examples of this!)CG painted: CG realism: Photomanip to look like a painting (no crappy filters!):Rendered pencil: Marker: =======================COMMISSION SLOTS:1. helen_keeble2. jarodrussell3. =ArgoForg4. octopedingenue5. *Chaos21126. poilass7. *PKBitchGirl[[alliekatgal for livelongnmarry]]

The community is called art_weekly.Everybody welcome! All levels of art skill from stick figures on up welcome! (Crit discouraged unless the artist asks for it, because the idea is to get people making art without fear, and fear of crit cripples some people.)You don't have to post every week. I know that gets to be onerous and too much like work. So! Interested? Go read the guidelines, join the comm, and make some art!====================Also!Rachelmanija and Lady Ganesh have set up a fandom fundraising auction at livelongnmarry.livejournal.com for marriage equality. Details can be found at her LJ and on the livelongnmarry userinfo page. I've put up an offer to do artwork for one lucky bidder. Bidding starts July 1st and lasts until July 15th. The con is over and done with for another year, and it wasn't too bad considering my table was (a) over in the webcomics area for some reason and (b) RIGHT NEXT TO the VG Cats table, which meant that I often had lots of people not interested in my stuff standing in front of my table blocking it, and (c) way the heck over on the side, after 4 years in a row of a really good spot. *sigh*And then I went directly from the con into moving, as in I got back Sunday, picked the keys up Monday, spent Monday and Tuesday packing and the movers came Wednesday. So I'm exhausted. And without internet access at home until the 16th.Anyway: I shall be opening commissions this summer, in order to stock up my bank account after the move, so be on the lookout for that announcement.
If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests.-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+This is a reply I gave someone in the forums, reposted here because I eventually want to make a What Is Reference and How To Use It tutorial later this summer, so I can refer back to this later. Feel free to post your definitions of and use of reference for discussion, or to argue with me or whatever. Also: those of you who left suggestions on my previous post for phone charms, especially the ones I haven't answered yet: I haven't forgotten you! I've just been consumed by my current project, which needs to get done and sent to the printers this weekend before I can turn my attention to the rest of the stuff for A-Kon.=======================It all depends what you mean by "reference." Looking at a bunch of pictures to work out how folds on shirts go when the character is lying down or how the arm and shoulder fit onto the torso when the character has their arm over their head? Unsure of how the light falls onto someone's face when the light sources is over to the left and up a bit and the head is at a 3/4 angle? Absolutely not necessary. It's a bit more of a grey area when it comes to reference you're following more closely. If someone else can look at a picture and the reference you used side-by-side and spot the similarities, it's probably a good idea to cite it. If you've changed it enough that someone else can look at them side by side and say they're two different pictures, you've changed it enough to make it yours and don't need to cite. Now as for poses: poses, in and of themselves, are not copyrightable. You don't legally need to cite sources on poses. (This does not mean you can TRACE them, however.) Morally, it's a whole 'nother matter, and it all depends on how much you care about what other people think. People tend to be a little too quick off the gun to accuse people of copying other artists, and the best way to combat that is to not use other drawings/paintings for your pose reference. Buy some pose reference books - they exist! Use photographs you take yourself (you can trace those with zero problem - it's all your art), get friends to give you photos, use copyright-free stock photos like those at Morguefile, Stock Xchng, and Image*After. If all else fails, do a google image search and find photos with similar poses and use those, or use magazines. But make sure you're not tracing those or copying anything other than just the pose (i.e. clothes, light, background elements), as then it becomes a derivative work. You'll develop ways to use reference and pose reference that make the resulting picture your own. I have several huge folders of images of fashion shoots and other things downloaded from various sources. When I draw a picture, I look through them and copy any pictures that have similar elements over to another folder to use as reference. Then as I draw, I go through all those photos to work out different elements - folds in clothing, light sources, color schemes, various anatomical issues, and so on - I never look at one single picture and copy that pose. For the picture I'm working on right now, I have a folder of about 50 images, both male and female, that have similar elements. Some are people lying down, the pciture taken from directly above. Others are people standing up, but with arms above their heads or held out to the side, and others standing but with the curve to the torso I wanted in the figures. Others have fold patterns similar to those in the clothes of my pic. Yet others have hands in similar positions. None of them resemble my picture in more than one or two particulars. For this picture, I wasn't able to get the hands drawn right from the reference photos, and in exasperation, I resorted to taking photos of my own hands in the exact positions I needed, manipulating them a bit in Photoshop so they'd look a bit longer and more elegant, unlike my stumpy hands, and loosely traced them in the sketch. As I refined the sketch the hands changed a bit, and when I inked them I used the sketch lines, not the photos. Am I going to mention I traced them? Hell no. I took the photos, they're mine legally and morally to use, and it doesn't matter because the end result is what's important, not so much the process. You'll also notice another cheat: the blond's right hand and the brunet's right hand are the same hand, just rotated. I did that in the sketch stage also, and inked them separately, which added a few small changes. To paint the sheets and blankets last night, I Googled a bunch of sheet and blanket images and looked hard at them to note how the folds and wrinkles reacted to pressure on them and how the light fell. I then applied the principles I derived (wrinkles go this way when someone is lying down on them, and another way when not) to the sheets...

I have way too much on my plate right now, argh.2) A-KON IS COMING UP! I need SUGGESTIONS! Especially for things I can put on a small phone-charm-type thing about 1" in diameter. BONUS this time: anyone who makes a suggestion I use will get themselves a charm! It'll be about 1" in diameter, could be any of several shapes (round, heart, puzzle piece, oval), laminated, and attached to a 2" thin strap that you can attach to a phone, a keychain, someone else's head, etc. P.S. If more than one person makes the same suggestion, the one who posted it first gets the charm. P.P.S. Suggestions with more detail are more useful. "Sora!" isn't particularly useful but "Sora in his Halloweentown outfit!" is. "Sora in his Halloweentown outfit in a pose like [blah] along with two ferrets and a monkey!!" Er, keeping in mind that a 1" diameter space is just about big enough for the character's head and not much else. XD And that if it's obviously appealing to only a very small audience, I probably won't do it. XDP.P.P.S. Non-fanart suggestions welcome, also.P.P.P.P.S. OH WHAT THE HELL. If you make a suggestion for a print that I use (keeping the P.P.S. above in mind), I'll send you a copy of the print! More detail is better in these types of suggestions.3) ~Steal-OK needs more art! Or, well, "art". You don't get anything for submitting art here except a warm fuzzy feeling somewhere in the vicinity of your shriveled little blackened heart BUT THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH, RIGHT?!4) Be on the lookout for a Project Blue Rose illustrated chapbook in the near future! I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests.I'm making up a journal entry out of several of my Livejournal entries, so if you read me over there, you might want to pass on this one. XD***I was attacked by story-ideas in a meeting the other day, and had to jot them down to get them out of my head so I could pay attention to the meeting and not obsess over the ideas. Unfortunately, my handwriting is not that good, especially when I'm attempting to be discreet, and there's a few things that I can't quite decipher. One of them seems to read either "Church of the Fake Walnut" or "Choral False Unit." Hrm.***I'm now on a low dose of Trazodone (50 mg) to help with sleep, since the clog-dancing elephants upstairs and various people who think it's OK to drive through an apartment parking lot at 1 AM with the stereo up loud keep waking me up, which makes both the ADD symptoms and migraine triggers worse. (Yay for moving elsewhere in June!)One of the side effects, I've found, is intense, rich dreams. I found a forum online where people were complaining about dreams of severed limbs and stuff like that, but I haven't had dreams like that. Mine are more visually intense, with richer colors and more detail in costuming and location and, it seems, plot - although the problem is that waking up to an NPR story about the continuing saga of Exxon Valdez litigation tends to drive plot from your mind.Tuesday's dream was in a classroom, where I was reading a book and discovered that yes, you can't read text in dreams because it turns into nonsense when you try (I read an article recently that mentioned that), and then finding out I had to do a presentation with three parts: I had to pick something that was paired and talk about that, then talk about what that had to do with Texas, and a third section I can't remember. So I picked the small paired kitsune figurines I bought for two LJ friends at the Inari shrine in Kyoto, and talked about them, then did something about foxes in Texas, and then the fox (i.e. Chinese fox spirit, not a *fox* fox) from an earlier dream of mine showed up and things kind of went to hell and I woke up. Wednesday's dream was set in a city that was sort of a combination of Regency-era London and a pre-Manchu era in a Chinese city. There was a man with dark hair going by the name Li Po (which is the name of a Chinese poet, also rendered Li Bao), dressed in Regency-era clothing, who was ... I'm not sure. A jack of all trades sort of thing, I think. Part detective, part spy. He had a sidekick/partner who was a woman, also dressed in male Regency clothes, who had lighter hair that was a straight and a bit longer than her shoulderblades. She was an inventor. There were at least three parts to the dream, all kind of fuzzy now. At one point, an official dressed in rich red Chinese clothing accompanied by several other men in Chinese clothing burst into the rooms full of bits and bobs and half-built inventions the two rented above a busy street, accusing the man of something-or-other and doing a search. The two weren't very concerned about it. (Erg. And there was something vague about bento in that section.)Another section had the man playing a chess-like game against a richly dressed woman - I'm not kidding abut the colors and clothes and sheer amount of stuff on the sets here - where he played an odd strategy of sacrificing all his pawn-like pieces, without moving any of the others, until his last move, where he moved one of the others by one square. His opponent quit the game in disgust at the point, and he pointed out it didn't matter, because he'd already won - there were no other moves she could make. The inventor sidekick had this hand-cranked box with lenses that acted as a projector and projected the game for the other people in the room to watch. The third bit had the inventor woman in blue Regency women's clothing, and I think I was actually in her head at that point - the rest was all third-person, which is unusual in my dreams - and she was with a bunch of others dressed similarly, with light, flowing fabric scarves, and they were all doing a circle-dance that was supposed to invoke ... something. Something like the Muses, an abstract concept for good luck and creativity, etc. It ended with them down on one knee, holding the scarves up.And about that point my alarm clock flipped on and the Exxon Valdez intruded.***Thursday's dream: Not quite as spectacular as the two previous nights. Er, well, I think when I say "spectacular," I mean "spectacular and interesting to me," as there were large sets and lots of fire, but I wasn't particularly emotonally involved and didn't really care what happened next. It had something to do with a giant auditorium in a mall, with large monsters kind of like fantasy-RPG dragons, in that they were four-legged and breathed fire, but they weren't d...

(No, I'm not offering a kiriban, because I've got a horrible track record in actually getting them done. I think I still technically owe them from three years ago.)

And as a reminder, the Sweet Charity's bonus auction to support the Writer's Guild Foundation Support Fund which assists industry members out of work during the writers' strike, is going on RIGHT NOW!

You can get a picture from me if you're the high bidder! Or a story from someone, or fic, or cookies, or any number of other services offered for the auction.

I'm offering one picture in any anime/manga fandom (For Sale -> look for 'telophase' or narrow the list down to 'graphics' and look for my name). Bidding lasts until the 26th. Full details on my offer on the SC site.

Oh, and I've gotten a new computer, tho I haven't finished loading software on it yet. It's a frankenstein, built from bits bought at Fry's, and here's the specs:

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad
4GB RAM (don't recall the specs)
Generic nVidia 8600GT GPU with 256MB RAM & 2 DVI ports (woo double monitors)
Maxtor 500GB 7200RPM 16MB buffer SATA HD
LG Dual-Layer DVD Writer

That's a hell of a lot of computer, I must say.

Not just the pain, but this one had nausea so bad I couldn't keep anything down for a day and a half, and I ended up phoning my doctor and having her phone in a prescription for an anti-nausea medication for me, just so I could get something in my body besides a few sips of water here and there. Luckily, it worked.

I think I've made some sort of breakthrough on painting humans realistically, although I can't post the picture because it's for the Yuletart gift art exchange on Livejournal, and the artists all remain anonymous until the end of the month. But I've got a couple of ideas for further pictures in that style, so will see what I can whip up for here.

I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests. So I'm starting to get vaguely in the mood to do a tutorial. Probably won't happen for a while, but the idea's sitting there in the back of my mind.

But what sort of tut? This is where you come in - if I were to do one, what would you want to know? "How I paint" is, er, a bit too broad, and as I tend to paint a different way every time, not that useful. (I followed *messa's tutorial on coloringhere for the Renji/Rukia pic I uploaded today.)

So wander through my gallery and see if there's any element of any pic that stands out that you want to know. I mean, I could certainly explain how to do the books in Light of the Dying Day easily. There's also my smudged-pencil style. I could probably attempt to attack markers, although my camera is doing weird things so I can't guarantee good photos.

As an incentive, I've uploaded two of the illustrations I did for the Yaoicon anthology last year. Both are worksafe - one completely, the other just barely technically.

(And while you're at it, go over and give Nightambre some Style Points - she's only 11 points away from Level 2!)

Can't upload any of my new art yet - it's all for various holiday exchanges and can't be posted until after Dec 25. Expect 3 or 4 new pics then.

ETA: To give style points, go to my gallery (link under the Featured Picture), and look at each picture. To the lower right of the picture is a link that says something about Major Style. Click that, and it'll give it a style point. I think it records IP address, and lets you give each pic a style point once per 24 hours.

I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests.Like everyone and their dog seemed to do this past weekend, I've joined MangaRevolution.com. It's a gallery similar to DA, with the twist that the number of pictures you can upload are severely limited, to force you to only post your best work, and that you gain cruft? bling? swag? whatever for your gallery as you accumulate "style points" on your artwork.

They do, however, turn it into a total popularity contest by encouraging you to encourage all your friends and relatives to go up your style points. So do so! On each picture's page you'll find a button to its lower right that says "Major Style!" Just click on that. You don't even have to be a member.

(On the not-so-silly side - they've got a nice collection of tutorials, and the style points system means that lots of good art sifts to the top.)

If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests.Rather than doing something like replying to all the comments I've got or posting original content here, I'm reposting a long comment I made to someone in the forums asking about how to get more pageviews and watchers.

-------------------

Tips for getting more well-known on DA, keeping in mind that if you're doing it all just to get visits back, people can tell, because there's often not very useful content in comments. You have to be sincere or at least fake sincerity very well.

1) Like everyone says, interaction with the community. I discovered that I tended to get about comment back for every ten I left on other people's artwork (and I left constructive criticism, not just "Great job!"). You're doing better than that at 139 comments given and 40 gotten. So keep making more.

2) Post more artwork and update more frequently. Frequent new content is the #1 draw to regular websites, and it tends to work that way here, too, for whatever reason.

3) Haunt the forums and post frequently, especially with GOOD advice to the people asking for advice. I know that when someone says something that particularly impresses me, I usually go to their page to take a look at what they're doing.

4) Draw popular subjects. This is the most mercenary of the tips, but it can and will backfire: you'll find that the subjects and characters you draw just because they're popular and not because you really have some sort of desire to draw them tend not to be very popular on your page, because they're missing soul. However, if there's something out there (subject, character, theme) that's popular that you like and you draw it, the picture itself will be better and the audience will respond.

5) Don't delete stuff. People find pages through old links in people's journals and favorites, and if you delete that image, the nobody will find your page. So it's bad and you can draw way better now. So what? The answer to that is in the next tip:

6) Don't think that popularity has anything to do with the quality of your work. People don't fave pics and re-visit them and pimp them to their friends because they're great on the technical level. People do that because they respond to the picture on an emotional level. Give them a picture that makes them LAUGH or CRY or say "AWWWW!" or GET ANGRY or FALL IN LOVE with the character. And I'm not talking (only) comics. My most popular pictures are ones that tell a story somehow. Just from looking at the picture, you can imagine what has just happened before and what it about to happen after the moment the character/s was/were captured. Go to my gallery stats page and check the Favorites. You'll note that the ten top pics (listed below) all tell a story of some sort, and that the top three are really awful artwork compared to other pictures:

-- 002 Hand: Iruka and Naruto 1225 (Makes you go "AWWW!")
-- Kiriban - Naruto vs Hogwarts 836 (Makes you LAUGH)
-- 009 - Lunch 604 ("AWWWW!")
-- The BOYS in the BAND 486 (More complicated story: takes each of the personalities of the group, and fits them into a band. Plus I wrote a little funny story in the description)
-- Mr. Attitude 482 (A subtle one: this one says I AM CRAZY; it's not just a simple character portrait)
-- 019 - Nap Time 446 (LAUGH)
-- Genjo Sanzo - Make My Day Punk 413 (Another subtle one: not a straight character portrait, but one that really lets you know his personality)
-- Bleach - Spa Day - Color 333 (LAUGH)
-- Kiriban - Older Sasuke 329 (This is the least story-like of them all, actually; it's more of a straight character-design pose. But it's a very popular character)
-- 012 - A Place to Relax 307 (LAUGH)

6) Make more detailed pictures. People have a fetish for detail. I tend to prefer simpler pictures with well-done graphic design, but I've also had a lot of art education. Many of those who haven't had a lot of formal art education really respond to pictures that look like they took a lot of time, attention, and effort. So even though I may have slaved for hours over the proper composition and design of a picture, one that I slapped down in a couple of hours will get more response, because it *looks* like I spent a lot of time on it.

7) Post artwork and comment on Mondays. Seriously. More people are online on Monday than any other day, for whatever reason, and more likely to come back and take a gander at your page, because they happen to be online then.

8) Pimp your work off of DA. I tend to post my art, and links to my art, on my Livejournal page. And when I do a fanart (which is mostly what my DA page is, because my non-fanart is mostly comics I'm attempting to sell, and thus don't give away for free here), I'll post it to appropriate Livejournal communities that I belong to. A Bleach work? Let the Bleach comms know. They're made to share stuff like t...

Go, generate, have fun. It produces the occasional really good one, the occasional really stupid one, and a whole set of okay ones, much like any random generator.

Now ... to work on a silly zanpakuto generator.

P.S. Don't ask me what a zanpakuto is if you don't know: just read the Wikipedia entry.

Inexplicably, the font in my journal CSS is HUGE. We'll see if editing it fixes it.

In other news, have been working on a random zanpakuto generator, much in the same vein as my random art prompt and story generators, only way more complex. I've got the name, release command, and shikai form down; just need to start on the ability and bankai. Will post it when I'm finished.

And yeah: I'll probably be running an art contest with my random art prompt generator, so sharpen your pencils and fire up Photoshop: the announcement should be coming soon!

I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests. Not quite dead, just busy. I took the week off after A-Kon to play Okami and am enjoying it quite a lot.

I've also created the Art Prompts Random Generator, for those times when you just can't come up with any inspiration whatsoever to draw.

It works: I've already got one good image in my head that I want to do. The problem is that I don't have the technical skill to do it yet (it wants to be photorealism) and it will drive me insane if I attempt it now. So the best I can do is make notes, gather reference, and stick it all in a folder on my hard drive for the point in the future when I can do it.

And don't any of you tell me I should go ahead and do it now. I can't redo pictures later, and if I try to do it now, I'll fail to get anywhere near the picture in my head, and I will get frustrated and angry and the picture will be ruined, since I won't be able to redo it at a later date. I'd rather wait until I'm better at it.

I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests.Just an entry to say I can do prints by mail-order of most of the things in my gallery, in various sizes. Just note me or email me with what you want. I take Paypal and concealed cash.

PRINTS

Shipping to the US is $3 for 4x6 and 8x10" prints, and $6 for 11x17" (because I have to buy a mailing tube, but any number of prints can fit inside it).

11 x 17" - $14
8 x 10" - $7
4 x 6" - $3

Anything can be printed on any size of paper, however if the proportions of the original don't match the size of the paper, I'll have to trim some off, so you might not end up with something that's 11 x 17", for example. But it cost the same, because I have to use the same size of paper. Does that make sense? If not, just let me know. 11 x 17" proportioned pictures below; assume everything else is 8 x 10".

KEYCHAINS

$3 each, 4 for $10. Shipping to the US: $3.

Any of the 11 x 17" prints can be put into a keychain, because they're the same proportion.

=======================

11 x 17" Pictures:

Each of the Four Bishounen of the Apocalypse is in his own separate keychain.

If you want to contact me, email works better than DA notes. Email address down below my ID on my DA page. I am not doing commissions at the moment, and rarely do requests. And I can have my life back!

For anyone thinking of publishing their own comic, please note that you really want to schedule yourself to have your comic already done and printed at least a month before the con. We're damn lucky to have found a printer that's amazingly fast and affordable.

Anyway, this means Spindrift pre-orders will be opening soon, but I'm going to work out putting a Paypal button on the website first, so I don't have to spend lots of time answering email and giving my Paypal address out.

I'm still looking for suggestions for art for A-Kon, as I now have only 2 weeks to produce stuff. Aagh!
IT'S A BOOK!

Project Blue Rose is in its third printing! If you're interested in a copy, head over to Project Blue Rose for information.
