Part of the reason I'd kinda gone missing around here (well, before my last journal the other day) is because we got our new 360. Part of the reason I'm back again is because it died already long journal has contents:- xbox 360 woes.- user emote revamp progress.- purging my devwatch.- yummy linksies.- artist features.[continued from intro paragraph] We got it from unclevic.com, a site that sells factory returns, used goods etc. Even after we paid for their two year warranty (read: insurance) it was still a ridiculous deal for an xbox 360 Elite bundle. It was less than half the price! It worked just perfectly until last week when I was playing Mass Effect and it started spewing out these strange visual glitches. I restart it, and it displays E74, and that was the end of that. We had to wait until after the weekend to get in touch with them, but once we did they were real helpful. We sent it back to them, and they contacted us yesterday to let us know they'd shipped out a replacement.user emote revampI'm done with the skin itself. I've come to the point where I'm happy using the selection I've made, at least enough to stop fiddling for now. From this point, if people would like changes made, they're encouraged to make the changes themselves. All that's left to do before I publish this is to make a collection with all the emotes I've used, and create a list to show the breakdown of how many of each emoticonist's emotes I used (a rough count shows I've used ~87 of `bad-blood's )Oh. I've also got to make a preview thumb. And write up some instructions. purging my devwatchAs I mentioned in my last poll, Ever purged your devwatch?, I'm going to start trimming down my devwatch. Only a small number of people I watch are really friends or peers (artists who's work is similar to my own), the rest are artists who I simply admire or who have 'eye candy'. It's important to be able to separate the two in order to stay sane and participate constructively in the community. So what I'm going to start doing is take people off my devwatch, and add their gallery RSS feeds to Google Reader.I check my collection of RSS feeds on Google Reader about as much as I check my message center, and it's perfectly suited to the sort of browsing patterns I'd use when viewing such eye candy. See, as you know of course, we have to actively delete/remove items from our message center. Google Reader on the other hand marks things as read as you scroll past them. It sounds crazy, but it's very intuitive, making it feel much more natural, like turning pages in a book, only even easier.I've read that they're going to work on some filters for our message center that will let us sort by friends etc, but I'm not going to wait for that. I'm missing out on my friends work too often, and I'm tired of feeling overwhelmed whenever I check my messages.linkdump!Another way to peel a banana.Spider builds doppelganger to trick predatorsHuman printersTokyo, the Blade Runner cityClucks can be deceiving...for more, check my shared items from Google Reader.artist featuresAs usual, these were found via the recent deviations on [link] (well, all but *Callipyginous, a mate of mine who needs to be on more people's watch list) “ [...] These people rolled over a cliff with a bunch of rock's and only came out from the accident with bruises and a couple cuts. And people say God isn't real. insightful comment by *fowlerok in the thread What's the weirdest thing you've seen someone do while driving?

I've been noting back and forth with =vsconcepts, talking about CSS and a journal skin he's working on. He wanted to know if he could have a sliding door, that people could actually slide open. I had the feeling that he was overestimating what CSS was capable of, so at first I was going to say, well, CSS can't do that sort of thing ...but I've been playing Professor Layton and the Curious Village lately, so I couldn't resist. This puzzle would have been worth at least 90 picarats. "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern."- from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern."- from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and HellThe image used for the door was from one of *bakenekogirl's stock packs. Not many results when you search for 'sliding door' in Resources Each step is a nested element, with right:40px used to shift each gap along. This means the entire width needs to be forced to 400px (or 500px if I made the gaps 50px, etc.) Originally I had planned to use percentages to make it fit any width, but since each element is nested, while the first gap would have been 10%, the next would have been 10% of the last elements width, and so the gap would get narrower with each step, rather than stay constant. This created a neat visual effect, but would have required a stupid amount of nested elements to work.If I didn't have a headache, and mathematics wasn't such a foreign language to me, I'd have found the right % to use on each nested element. Maybe someone more gifted can help me with that, but for now fixed width it shall be. You might have noticed that you don't have to start opening it from the very right; it's possible to 'fast forward' by coming in from the left, or from above/below. I thought about stopping this, but I like that it lets people take a shortcut if they want.Last thing worth mentioning I think, is that, sigh, the content must be duplicated, much like with the text shadows. The content you see as you slide the door open is the original, and then after you've fully opened the door it switches in the copy. I can't think of a way to have it act like it does without having to duplicate the content, but if someone else can, they're more than welcome to try. This same technique could be used to make an iPhone skin that you have to 'unlock'... but it's really best used sparingly for a secret sidebar or something. Could be made to work vertically too, for a garage door, bread box, etc.Anyways. Depending on how things go with =vsconcepts' skin, I might post a tutorial for this soon.

Since the last journal I've replaced a further 91 emotes, making it 209 emotes (or thereabout) that the skin revamps. A quick check of the emoticon legend, sorted by popularity shows that I've found replacements for the majority of emotes people will use. There are a few left, but I don't think they need to be changed. Things like and could be changed, but there aren't that many revamps, if any. Some, like and I think are fine as they are, and haven't found any revamps that do a better job of emoting. Anyhow, if you want to give it a shot, and maybe give me some feedback before I publish it as a deviation, get the updated stylesheet: user emote revampThe debug stuff has been split into a separate file: user emote revamp DEBUG - it lets you use the emoticon legend to see what emotes have been changed and hover to compare them to the old emote.I'll be going over the emoticon legend one last time to see what replacements I can find around dA, and then I'll contact friends in the emote scene to have a quick look at it, passing it by the peeps in #WeEmote too perhaps. After that, I need to write up some quick instructions on how to do this yourself so people can modify the selection and/or make their own sets - for instance, I could imagine =bad-blood and =Mrichston having their own skin for all the revamps they've created

So in my last journal I mentioned I'd soon be publishing the home brewed emote revamp stylesheet. I've got a few things to clean up first. A couple of emotes were taken down from dA since I first started this several months ago, so I've got to replace those, but more importantly there's still quite a few emotes I haven't swapped yet in the first place. If you'd like to try out what I've got so far, grab the stylesheet and plug it into Stylish. It includes a set of debug styles, so you can use the emote legend to see which emotes have been swapped, and hovering the emotes shows you the old versions. I'd just like to point out that I'm not a part of the emoticon community here. I'm just a CSS junkie that saw an opportunity. So, hopefully y'all appreciate that about my choices in emotes. If you think there's a better one out there than the one I've currently used, let me know Also, like everyone else, I am looking forward to the official revamp/dictionary/thinger that is being worked on. Last year when I first shared this stylesheet, some people read it as ... I dunno, drama, and so I decided to shelve it while the official one was worked on. Fact is though, it's been freakin ages, and I don't think it's unreasonable for people to use something like this on their own computers. Anyway, the list below shows the emotes that have yet to be swapped. Personally, I don't think they all need updating, but if someone finds one worth replacing it with, suggest it I'll be doing my own search for replacements, and people can help me out if they want by commenting with suggested replacements for the ones below. As I find good replacements, I'll take them off the list so as not to have people searching for emotes already taken care of. Before I publish it I'll pass it by a few emoticonist friends to make sure there's nothing glaringly wrong with my choices. I'm not going to put this to a vote or something, because you can swap the emotes with your preferred choice yourself. That's the whole point. :'(

Lots of random little thoughts I want to put down right now. Some of them perhaps worth entire journals of their own, but for now a bunch of summaries. One day I'll catch myself typing 'where' instead of 'were'. I know the difference, but typing 'where' has become part of my muscle memory, and I'll use it when I didn't even know I typed the extra h. Y'see, me and English, we've got this love hate thing going on where I'll forget if we were flamin' or writing poetry. Oho, you see what I did thar?I wont have to worry about where to use were, as it were, when Google Wave goes public. Among many many other things, it has a very intelligent spell checker that can correct words spelt properly but used in the wrong context. It's WAY more than a spell checker though, so if you missed/dismissed the news item I put up, you simply have to check it out. If you communicate on the web at all, via email or whatever, you'll find it awesome. If else, check for a pulse. I've found myself debating a lot lately. Mostly with those sorry religious folk. How do you reason with these people when they use fundamentalist bullshit like - [link] to 'prove' their beliefs. They hurl the usual arguments at me, Pascal's wager, irreducible complexity, what happened before the big bang... guh. And y'know... I give them every change to educate themselves, but I always feel like Alice going down the rabbit hole.Their arguments and logic start taking me to Wonderland. And right when their back is against the wall, and I've torn down all the fallacies and ignorance, they try to equalise the argument, usually by saying atheism takes just as much faith, and neither of us will give up our faith. An argument I proved false way back at the beginning. These people, they're like goldfish, with Swiss cheese for brains. I mean... really, how can you cry discrimination that creationism isn't accepted as science, and then when I respond with the scientific method, come back at me with a recomendation to watch Expelled. I'm going to say it again, these people are BRAINWASHED. They're like fucking zombies. It makes me sad, honestly. Come on people now, now people come on now. The other debating has been with people who seem to have made it their life's mission to be assholes in the suggestion forum. It's bizarre. It's like there's some secret cult of deviantart, and anyone who questions it's perfection shall be cast into the eternal pit of flamers. The most recent suggestion was that we should be able to search for camera and lens type, basically, we should be able to search for EXIF data. I have absolutely no idea why this isn't a no brainer. It's data connected to an image, we should be able to search for it. But noOOOOooooOooO Oh, ohoho! Nine out of ten comments said they didn't know why anyone would want to do that; it's stupid. Le sigh.Earlier, a particular deviant who seems to do nothing but troll the suggestion forum, couldn't see the benefit in dA fixing the layout when viewed at sub 1024 screen sizes. It wouldn't be that hard, after we got a netbook I actually started writing a userstyle to make dA nicer to browse and use. If I can tinker away here and there and put something together, dA can too. But noooOooOoooo, it's shtoopid. Fuck. I'm surrounded by idiots all over again.Actually, I think what might have happened is all these people have become jaded by all the genuinely stupid suggestions that do crop up often. That I could understand, but all the same, if you become that jaded, why keep frequenting the forum? Masochists!meh.I've found myself using Chrome a lot lately. Zippy browser it is. I have Google Reader open pretty much all the time, and Flash seems to have a problem with letting go of ram under Firefox. I've found in Chrome I can just shut the tab and it kills the Flash process until it needs it again. Another reason I hate Flash. I hate Flash. I am missing a bunch of my Firefox extensions though. Oh Stylish, your new icons are fugly (easily fixed with a userstyle), but I still love thee. Oh, which reminds me. When Firefox went stupid and I lost my entire profile (after I uninstalled a nightly build), I also lost all my hand written user styles, that weren't saved outside of Stylish. One of these styles was the Emoticon replacement style that replaced a whole bunch of emotes with revamped versions, ahead of the official update. After talking to $eStunt (or was it $Dan14Lev?) I decided to let it cool while work on the official revamp/emoticon dictionary took place. Months passed, and then, like I said, poof, I lost it. Then today I was talking to =JurgenDoe and he mentioned that he still had it! MY SAVOURY SAVIOUR! ...and then while writing this I remembered it had been sitting on my web server the whole time too. Anyhow. So now that I've got it again, and there's still no sign of the emoticon dictionary, I might be releasing the user style soon. Maybe. Watch them tell me it's around the corner again I've all but completed my firs...

AAAAAAWWWWESOME. Now, before you go click the YouTube link (or watch it embedded, AAAAAAWWWWESOME) be warned it contains lyrics that aren't safe for work, or church. Also, I doubt anyone will be able to watch it through to the end, it's really awkward to listen to (and watch.) While it's just a young boy freestyling into a webcam, rapping whatever comes into his head, it's almost as disturbing as Japanese fetish porn.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-62sO2ZuV0UPDATE! Nadia just pointed out that it's not a child, but Andy Milonakis - a comedian with at congenital growth-hormone condition that makes me him look and sound like a kid. woops. In a way, it's kinda sad. When I was a kid with my 486, I discovered the sound recorder in Windows 3.1, and I'd spend all day recording myself. I'm pretty sure I said (and sung) some pretty stupid shit too, but luckily it was pre-youtube, pre-social-networks, pre-google. Back then it was pretty much pre-www too. The only people I embarrassed myself in front of was my music class, when I used my computer to produce a radio show, with sound effects and reverb etc. We had this family get together a few years back, and my dad thought it'd be cool to put his macbook on a table with the iSight plugged in. The kids spent so much time standing in front of it making faces and fooling around. It might as well have been a mirror! So I think, part of this is people sticking stuff on the net that should never have been recorded in the first place. What's wrong with using a mirror?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qSSyad4Gb8On dA, I like to keep my history. My early submissions, my early journals. Everything. I'm old enough to decide this, I've chosen to commit to this. Not everyone wants such a permanent record though. Not everyone is smart enough to realise what this means. Take our friend Kyle for instance, who thought he'd get a day of work - how not to take a sick day- and we've all heard about how job recruiters are looking people up on places like myspace and Facebook to get character backgrounds on potential employees. When you put your life on the internet, it's not just about losing privacy, it's about casting shit in stone. In the real world, people will forget what an ass you were in school and see who you are now. The internet makes those antics permanent, for all too see.It was the article School newspaper archives go online, embarassing student writing and shenanigans become permanent record over at BoingBoing that got me thinking about this. At first I was just going to link to two fat kids singing, but it just fell into place as I wrote it. And seriously, what is it with girls talking about themselves on youtube? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-e7vHbzbp8FUCK; NO ONE CARES!

I'm surrounded by idiots, you're surrounded by idiots. Chances are, you might be one of the idiots. Just came across an article: Scientists Unveil Missing Link In Evolution. It's an interesting enough read, but the fun starts when you check out the comments."i think the quack that came up with this idea is the missing link, you may think you are some monkey reject but i was created in the image of GOD, not some monkey. think again.""I think that it takes more faith to believe that we evolved from this monkey than to believe that we were created by God.""Maybe they should go back to the drawing board with this one or back to the beginning..Because it tells us there that in the beginning it was God who made man......"What cracks me up about these religious nutjobs, and that last one is a perfect example, is that you can't tell them apart from the people hamming it up in satire. Oh, you can spot the people being sarcastic about the scientific method (as in, oh look at these scientists ignoring all the evidence of there being a creator), but what about:"It" bears a striking resemblance to Satan, the great deceiver - at any rate, have your fun, and waste your time worshipping this idol - the world's great religions have stood the test of time.I couldn't have fit that much fail into such a tiny morsel of text if I tried! It's either the work of a comic genius / master internets troll, or someone that needs to be neutered. But I can't tell which! Oh my, more comments while I wrote this journal:"We are all searching for answers on so many questions we have, yet so few find it. Once you found God's kingdom and all His glory everything starts making sense. God's word says we are created to his image, what more are you looking or searching for?""Creatures trying to prove that their Creator doesn't exist and that they were simply evolved from monkies. How Absolute is the freedom that God has granted us that can allow people to go that far in denial!God is good. Turn to Him. It's simpler.""all it is, is a dead monkey, they'll cling to anything to try and disprove God. You'll never find the missing link because it doesn't exist. You were created by God, whether you believe it or not.47 million yrs ??? They're guessing !For since the creation of the world, Gods invisible qualities, his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. Romans 1;20."Man, that last one is an example of what cracks me up the most - the freakin' bible quotes. Sometimes you're like, that's not fair! 'cause the bible is their infinite ammo of crap that sounds good. Or maybe not. But that quote above is really bad. Since the creation of the world, before there was anything to observe it, something/someone CLEARLY saw the INVISIBLE qualities of god, his ETERNAL power (wtf, eternal?), and for that, had no excuse. No excuse for what? That god was the creator? Fuck, here's a quote for you:"He makes a list of children throughout the world, categorizing them according to their behavior ("naughty" or "nice") and that he delivers presents, including toys, candy, and other gifts to all of the good boys and girls in the world, and sometimes coal to the naughty children, on the single night of Christmas Eve. He accomplishes this feat with the aid of the elves who make the toys in the workshop and the reindeer who pull his sleigh."Guess who? Change some minor details, and you've got your god, bitches Oh, oh, last one:Has every ant spider fly and bug evolved, and has every bee bird and bat,do plants die and grow again and grass when cut grow again, everything in nature has DNA, Science has yet to prove where water came from,is it a quirk of nature that our distance from the sun helps sustain all life on this beautiful planet,is it a quirk of nature that the air we breathe is produced by trees,so much of life depends on everything else on this planet that it has to be by design.we are unique as is every other living thing on earth. that to me points the finger to god. That sounds like a child to me. So sad. Anyhow, the above comment illustrates how the less someone knows, the more confident they are that they know everything. "Science has yet to prove where water came from" - seriously?

In this journal: Nick laments the death of his 360, we learn he has began work on his new skin for deviantART, and he also reveals he might have plans for his 'Journal CSS' line of tutorials. And, for good measure, he's selected some more Recent Deviants. As you may recall, Nick has taken a liking to browsing the front page for new and interesting content, following tantalising examples back to their artist's gallery for more. Now, on with the journal! Brought to you today by Byphodine. Pretending to be asleep not enough? Try Byphodine! Not sure if you've heard (oh! HAVE YOU HERD?), but our xbox 360 finally died. Was bound to happen eventually, it had problems from the start when we found the disk tray didn't want to come out without a smack.Main problem it had was that stream heavy games would crash at random, which I suspected was the drive's fault, because it'd make odd noises before crashing. Upon installing the games to the HDD they wouldn't crash anymore. So at first when the disk drive died we just played arcade games, downloaded demos, and the only installed game - GTA IV, which I had reinstalled in order to play The Lost and Damned. Then, a week or so ago Yousef, Nadia's/our nephew was playing it in the morning before I'd gotten up and apparently it red ringed. I haven't seen it for myself, but now it crashes crazy often. I kinda had half a mind to try repair it myself, but the truth is... I don't trust it holding up after the repairs. There was a wide range of crashes, sometimes it'd boot up with corrupted graphics, Mass Effect crashed more often, and more flamboyantly after I installed it to the HDD etc etc. I could replace the disk drive, do the usual repair job for overheating... and it could still arse around. So I'd rather save up a bit and get a new one with the updated, more reliable internals. And a bigger HDD so we can have more than two games installed at once. The lack of a gaming console (oh wait, we have the Wii still, but blehg, games?) has left me with a bit of time on my hands, so I've begun the rewrite for my black skin for deviantart. I've got the userpage almost done:Unlike when I wrote the previous versions, I'm taking it nice and easy this time, no skipping sleep and not eating until it's done. Not set on the orange everywhere just yet. I'm going to keep it for the links, but it looks quite busy so I'll be seeing if I can do something about that. I'm also going to keep the tradition of giving it a sub title. Currently it's between 'Paint it black' by the Rolling Stones, or 'Black Celebration' by Depeche Mode. Also, this time around I've found a way to leave journals alone without needing an extra Greasemonkey script. Journals without CSS will be left as they are, looking like default journals, but I figured that was worth putting up with to make things simpler. Still wish dA would give us a class like 'hasCSS' to work with. With the previously mentioned time I've got on my hands, I've also been thinking about working on the Journal CSS tutorials/snippets. Now might be a good time for me to go through and update/finish any that need it, but I've also been thinking it'd be sweet to write a new one. I just need to think of something to do it for. Any ideas? Also been thinking that with the new journal CSS system out of beta, I might publish this skin - I named it 'Serif and Simple' when I saved it for myself Now, the moment you've been scrolling for - artists discovered by their recent deviations! Or, ADBTRD for short. ~Suppi-lu-liuma seems to be one heck of a globe-trotter, it was too hard to pick just three images to represent their gallery, you've gotta check it out for yourself.

She sells stuff; the most awesome stuff ever. So if you ever felt like, I dunno, showing your appreciation for the journal CSS stuff I share, spoil yourself and commission her to make you something! Heck, even if you hate my CSS, buy something anyhow! Her gallery is filled with other items for sale. Below you'll see examples of laser etched and cut notebooks (with laser cut paper to match the book shape!), syringe pens, laser etched dog tags (black shown, we have other colours), etched pocket tins, resin filled bottle caps, and 1 inch button/badges. The notebooks in particular, are made from a special kind of win, you've just got to see that thing up close. All of the things she makes can be custom made to your design/specifications. For instance, a while back she made a batch of buttons with the customer's own art. She'll also give discounts to large orders of buttons, which she can also convert to be magnets btw. Those magnets are the coolest ever, she's also begun making magnets of her victorian surreal art (out of wood, cut and etched with a laser. Did I mention it was cut and etched with a laser? Awesomeness.) but I'm not sure if they're out of the prototype yet. ...and although I tell her she shouldn't do it, she includes random gifts along with each order, and a hand written note/letter to let you know how much we appreciate the money to buy food and air. Yeah, air. It's like water you breath. Now, before I go, a glimpse of the evil genius herself at work:

update: waaah? Anyone else noticed the 'correspondence' message type in the MC? Wonder what's cooking? Just a quick update, in case you haven't noticed, but now when someone installs a journal skin using the beta system, they can click a 'how to...' button (it's at the bottom of the options tab), and they'll be shown the description you gave your journal skin.So if your journal skin requires any special HTML, you can leave instructions (or a link to instructions) in your description. The reason they haven't gone for a more all-out system for adding custom HTML is because they'd like to encourage skin authors to keep things simple. The fact is, if you skin requires the use of silly amounts of custom HTML each time a journal is written, you've either coded it inefficiently, or you've made it overly complex. As skin authors, it should be your aim to try and keep the HTML as simple as possible. It's always been mine anyhow. Of course, extra HTML can't be avoided for some things, but those journals will just have to be used by more advanced users. deviantART.com skins => Stylish skins => User stylesStraight after I published my original journal questioning the name change from deviantART.com skins to Stylish skins I shot off a note to ^2dazed and $Moonbeam13, and found out why the gallery was renamed. It was so obvious I felt stupid for not thinking of it - the newly created deviantART Skins > Journal category was an aweful lot like deviantART.com skins, so to save confusion it had to be changed. Fair enough We've agreed upon calling it User Styles instead of Stylish skins though. I'm sure you'll agree that's even more appropriate than deviantART.com skins, as they're not always skins in the traditional sense.

So, it's been about a day since first contact with the new journal CSS system, and I've got a few thoughts so far. Firstly, it looks like once you've submitted your journal skin to the gallery you can't edit it, because it thinks we've changed the images or something. I figured out what is actually going on there. When you submit the images to dA, it changes their file names, and updates your CSS. So if you want to update it, you have to first copy the CSS it outputs to you (with the new image URLs), and replace the original CSS you had. Hopefully they can come up with something that doesn't require us to keep doing this though, as it isn't exactly intuitive or user friendly. Now, on the topic of the images, it would appear that the system wont let you submit a skin without at least one image in it. No idea why they are doign that - but it's easy to overcome, just include a doofus selector with a background, and upload a 1px gif when it asks for it. That'd be my workaround, but ideally they should drop it as a requirement. The interface in our journal edit pages could do with some slight tweaks too. First, the little button at the bottom that indicates which skin you are currently using shouldn't be a button. I've gotten used to it, but at first it didn't make any sense. It should just be "Journal Skin: Vintage CSS - easy install." with a separate button "Change skin". The content of the header/footer is part of the skin now, which is really rather odd. While a lot of skins have extra HTML that is needed in the header or footer, some people use them for their own content. I'm not sure how this will effect people, will their stamps (or footer content) get overriden when they change skins? I guess that once they install a skin, they'll need to customise it with their header/footer content and save it, otherwise they'll lose it whenever they switch skins. I dunno. Anyone had any experiences on this yet? Oh, and before I move to the next item, it'd be neat if the download counter reflected how many times a skin had been installed - or maybe rename it 'installs' or whatever. It'd be nice to have a list of the people that have installed it, like the list of people that have added it to their favourites... but it's not that important. One thing that is obviously lacking from the system is any way for skin authors to indicate custom HTML that can be used in the journal body (things like div boxes, thumb boxes, titles, etc.)¢mindfuckx has suggested a sort of templating syntax, but I think that's just replacing one set of tags to remember with another set of tags to remember... which, to me, doesn't really solve the problem. I'd rather see something like what =Thewinator suggested: [link] - where the skin author defines insertable elements, and what/where the content can go, and dA would generate the UI for adding them. I like this setup better because the user doesn't have to deal with any code, and would get a special interface for adding their content. Imagine, they add one of those div boxes, with a title. dA would pop up with one of those modal windows, with a field for the title of the box, and a area for the content. Or, if they insert a thumb featuring box, they'd get a deviation picker. For more complicated stuff, like hover menus, or anything else we come up with, it could just dump it into the journal area as plain text with ##EDIT THIS## messages the skin author has left. To try and make a system that can foresee every possible variation and make an interface for it... would be just too complicated. If you check =Thewinator's post, you could imagine there being additional properties, like 'repeatable="true"' which would indicate that a certain element can be inserted multiple times (ie, would be useful for a menu or list) but then how do you deal with nested menu items (as in most hover menus) without things getting ugly fast? Anyhow. That's my thoughts for now. How are you guys finding it so far?

First of all, I'm super freaking excited to see the changes coming to the journal CSS system. It's going to be much easier to publish and install them now, and that's cool. I'd still like to see a bit more flexibility to the actual HTML and CSS we can use, but that's another matter. I'm not sure if it's only beta testers that can see the updates, but if you visit dA Related > deviantart skins > journal you'll see the install buttons below the preview images, and the EULA that pops up when you add a skin. The EULA, while written in clumsy legalese, is nothing scary; it's basically laying out what has been an unspoken agreement anyhow. The only point that I think needs revising is point 5 - You may not grant permission to any other person to use the Skin Content, even as modified, nor may you export the Skin Content when used under this Agreement in any fashion to any other locations on the World Wide Web unless the Skin Content is served by equipment under the control of deviantART.See, unless just throws a spanner in the works right there. Is that saying, seriously, that if the Skin Content is served by dA's servers, people can give permission for other people to use our skins? ...So, hotlinking is okay? I'm not trying to get people all worked up and drama, as it's quite obvious what they're shooting for, but yeah, just needs some clarification. In your new journal page you'll see the new interface. There's a button to open a skin selection window, and if you open the options tab you'll find the header/css/footer fields (not sure why it's not header/footer/css, or css/header/footer) and the option to save the current skin. This is neat, as you can use it to switch between commonly used journal skins - something I do often. I can't seem to submit to the new dA Related > deviantart skins > journal category, as it keep throwing up a 'cannot parse file' error. I think it's a permissions thing though, it'll probably start working when they start beta testing this (if they do.)update: IT'S ALIVE! I wasn't using the correct format (check the comments below for the beta testers forum links) - I wouldn't install it yet though. While dA successfully detected and stored the images linked to in the CSS, the image of the picture is actually an img tag in the footer. This means while all the other images are now stored by dA, that image is still linked to my server, so I need to update my code first. updatery: I've taken it down while I work on modifying it slightly to work better with the new system. updatereded: resubmitted it as a new deviation, with fixed HTML/CSS - go geddit! The re-branding of 'deviantART.com skins' => 'Stylish Skins' One thing that's really annoyed me though is their re-branding of the site skins to Stylish skins. I know practically everyone that uses the site skins applies them with Stylish in Firefox, but they don't have to. IE can use user stylesheets! Opera can too, even Safari. These things we make, these user styles, they aren't written FOR Stylish, it's just CSS, Stylish is just the most popular way of applying them. The gallery description even makes it sound like Stylish is the only way to use them - "Skins that will modify the appearance of the deviantART.com website using the Stylish plugin" Back when the deviantART.com Skins category was created, you wanna know what it almost was instead? It was almost going to be under Application Skins for deviantSkin, `bluespeed9's Firefox extension I argued the same thing back then, as I do now for Stylish: I didn't start writing user styles for deviantSkin, it's just CSS, there's many different ways to install them on many different browsers. They're independent from the applications that might use them. And as we've seen now with deviantSkin, something else has come along that does it better and has become more popular. What's going to happen in the future, if Firefox makes user styles part of the interface by default, as the other browsers do? Don't get me wrong, I love Stylish. But it's a dumb move.

Then today, someone (for like, the fifth time) asked wtf was going on, so I decided to grit my teeth and get it done.Had a bit of an epiphany, and managed to do it a lot easier than I expected. I think I would have given up if I hadn't figured it out, but it came to me in a heartbeat, so it's all good. I also cleaned up the code slightly. If you remember from the original version, the background for the hovered side tab wouldn't load until you hovered it the first time. Always bugged me. You'd hover, and the text would just be floating there while the background loaded. What I've done in the update is make the normal state, and the hover state part of the same image, and just change the background position on hover. I'm so happy how easy that was to fix, gave me the buzz I love about working with CSS sometimes. Soooo, if you were waiting for me to update it, you can finally get it:I've enabled critiques this time around too, so let me have it! journal CSS by `thespook, stock images used.

Over time, I've grown annoyed with my other methods for displaying thumbs. However, this has evolved over time from CSS I wrote for my own use, with the benefit of having learnt from my previous mistakes. So you know it's good. The HTML is simple: description goes in these DT tags. :iconusername: :devusername: :thumb#####: :thumb#####: :thumb#####: :iconusername: :thumb#####: :thumb#####: :thumb#####: So, first you'll notice that everything goes between and - if you've never seen these tags before, it's a definition list. I've used them here because I've never seen anyone use them in their journals, and that means fewer div tags and class names to bother with. Lets pretend it stands for 'deviation list' The DT tag creates the horizontal description, and within it you can write as much or as little as you like. It'll stretch to fit, I promise. Anywhere within the description you can place the username and avatar codes. In the code example above you'll see that they're both together inside EM tags. This will 'connect' them on hover - so when you hover over one of them, the other will light up too. I think it's fancypants, but you don't actually have to use it, place the avatar anywhere (inside the DT) and it will be moved to the corner. This does mean though, that you can only have one avatar up there!Close the DT tag, and then open the DD tag to start showing thumbs. Go crazy, dump as many thumbs in there as you like. Six seems to be a nice number. If you're not including a description (DT) for this artist, put their avatar code anyplace you like (inside the DD), and it'll be moved to the left. I like to put it first, but it actually doesn't matter. The avatar will be vertically centered by default. If you add too many thumbs and they wrap onto more than 2 or 3 lines, it might look a bit goofy in the middle, so consider using a DT for this artist, or change the CSS so it's not centered anymore (I'll explain how later.)Now, for the CSS:dl br{display:none}dt{margin:0;position:relative;min-height:58px;padding:10px 20px 10px 90px;background:#eee}dt br{display:inline}dl em{font-style:normal}dt em a{font-weight:bold}dl em:hover a{color:red}dt .avatar{position:absolute!important;left:15px;top:12px;border:2px solid transparent}dd .avatar{position:absolute!important;left:15px;top:50%;margin-top:-25px;border:2px solid transparent}dl em:hover .avatar{border-color:#fff;background:#fff;outline:1px solid #ccc}dd{text-align:center;margin:0}dl dd{margin:0 0 15px 0;padding:10px 0 15px 90px;text-align:center;position:relative;background:#eee}dd .shadow{ background:none!important; display: inline-block; max-height: 160px; min-width: 100px; text-align: center !important;}dd .shadow img{ vertical-align: middle !important; border:3px solid #ccc;background:#ccc;}dd .shadow img:hover{border-color:#fff;background:#D5E0D2;outline:1px solid #999}Some notes about the CSS now. In this journal, there is a 58px padding on the left and right, and so to make the DL fill the full width I used negative margins: dl{margin:0 -58px}. I haven't included the negative margins in the code block above, because your journal will be different, and it would have probably confused people if I left it in.If you want to change the alignment of the thumbs, change text-align:center in dd{} and dl dd to either left, right or justify - though I would suggest you don't use justify, it looks stupid almost always. Justify can be okay for text, just not for thumbs. The rest, like changing padding values, or colours, should be obvious, though you're welcome to ask for help if you are having problems. Here's the fun part now, fancypants customisations. To make each DD scroll horizontally like above, add the following:dl dd{white-space:pre;overflow:auto}It looks kinda snazzy when there's one, but it can get silly if you have many of them at once.Next, you might have missed it earlier, so I'll show it again (hover the thumb!):OH SNA- err, SUP!You can use it to give a short description, or even link to the critique/comment you left. I dunno, whatever you like. The HTML is::thumb####:your messageAnd the additional CSS is:dd u{position:relative;text-decoration:none;display:inline-block}dd u sup{display:none}dd u:hover sup{display:block;position:absolute;bottom:10px;left:50%;width:150px;background:#ffc;border:1px solid #D1D1A7;text-align:left;padding:4px}So far, the CSS has been all about featuring an artist at a time. But what if you just want a massive block of random thumbs? Well, you can have th...

So, while wasting some time checking out my RSS feeds, I read a thread on reddit about a church with an insane flash intro. That link was funny enough, but there's more - turns out there's a lot of money to be made making churches feel like summer blockbuster movies. I dunno about you, but if I was young, ignorant and impressionable, (and didn't hate Flash) I'd pick my jaw up off the floor and be all like FUCK YEAH JESUS RAWKS! They've even got the dude with the movie voice, imagine:"They tortured him, nailed him to a cross, and then locked him up. Little did they know that he'd be bustin' out in three days to get his REVENGE. AT THE SAME TIME.I HAVE TO SEE THIS SHIT!So I plug 'vid k&k mime' into my address bar (vid is a keyword search that looksup google video) and the first result is K&K Mimes - Stand. It was weird enough as it was, but I heard a voice, the voice of a right angle, and it said unto me, "Take thee, this here youtube video, and muten it's sound. Then make thee a random playlist of thy mp3 collection, and mashup thy sight and sound. I promise thee, much hilaritee."So taketh my playlist I did, and muteth the sound of the youtube video I did. I'd appreciate it if you could give it a try for me, and share any thoughts you have, so I can make any last minute changes before releasing it proper. What it does is place the original note and reply form next to eachother, so you don't have to scroll back and forth so much when replying to long notes. You'll need Stylish, and the contents of sidebyside.css to paste into a new blank style. The original version required a separate Greasemonkey script to help out, but I've danced around that this time. Also, if you haven't checked it out already, you might want to try Artist's category links Modified the featuring CSS slightly. Avatars are now vertically centered (top:50%;margin-top:-25px) and are highlighted in red white when their row is hovered, so it's clearer which ones belong to which group.
Funny story. But first, a recap of my misadventures for those that might have missed it the first time. I don't know if you remember (yes - YOU - the person looking at a screen and reading this here electronic text), but a while back I had an amusing little adventure when I wrote a userstyle to turn all the text on a webpage transparent. I'd link to the original journal, but as my site is still down (and so, the example images too) I'll give a dramatic re-telling instead. Joy. Basically, this little userstyle made all the writing vanish, without affecting the layout. Looked pretty funny, with all the icons and images, and emotes still floating about. The adventure began when I saved it to Stylish, as a new blank style. I dunno if y'all (yes, YOU ALL, people reading this here fandangled writing on their digital displays) know about this, but Stylish lets you bugger around with the CSS of Firefox itself too. You can change the Greasemonkey icon for instance. So when I, the genius, saved the following, and only the following into Stylish:*{color:transparent!important}Well. - All the text vanished, throughout all of Firefox. And so, like when a good friend changes the language on your cell phone to Bulgarian, or Inuit, I had a fun time trying to change it back. And there was much lulz. *cue laugh track*Fast forward to today. Or, well, skip chapters for those watching DVD. Or whatever it is on bluray. Or, heck, 'scrub' forward for those sporting the Minority Report FingerF*k OS. Shit, actually, rewind a day. Or, well, go back a chapter, or whatever it is on bluray, or 'scrub' back a moment on your fandangled ATM OS. Because yesterday I was watching a youtube video by a guy who's pretty much the opposite of Yahtzee. I enjoy Zero Punctuation as much as the next guy, but I enjoy balance in life too. The youtube user InecomCompany (doesn't seem to give his real name anywhere) reviews all sorts of games, from modern consoles all the way back to the earliest consoles like the Atari 2600. His voice reminds me of Egon from Ghostbusters - and that's a good thing, especially after having enough of Yahtzee's breathless rants. Unlike Yahtzee, who, as a critic, focuses unrelentingly on the flaws and negative aspects in order to tell you why you shouldn't buy a certain game, InecomCompany (onward known as Egon) espouses the virtues of a game to tell you why you should buy/play a certain game. Even those dodgy looking Atari 2600 games. And he does it with a dry sense of humour that just hits the spot for me, so I watch it for the entertainment value, and for the little bits of history he shares. But. Err. (I can't believe it's not,) Back to watching this particular youtube video. Most of Egon's uploads are available in HQ, but my ancient laptop can't play them without dropping frames when there's a lot of movement. I was showing Nadia how good they looked in HQ, while at the same time lamenting the jerky framerate, when, after switching back and forth between SD and HQ, the video glitched up. I've had images corrupt on me before: spq002, spq005 when an extremely large hand stiched panorama (Hot sand Cold water) crashed on me in Photoshop, and spq_err when Dreamweaver gobbled up a jpeg I uploaded to a client's server. I think they can be beautiful accidents. Like a sort of digital decay. Actually, it is digital decay. And anyone that knows me, knows I love all sorts of decay. I had a feeling if I hit play, it might right itself and I'd lose an opportunity to capture some sweet glitch art, so while keeping it paused, I moved the helmet, or whatever that red knob is called and captured all the interesting preview frames there where. I dunno if you've noticed, but when you seek around on flash videos you only get preview frames every now and then, it's not very accurate. The most interesting of those, I uploaded to dA: And as usual lately, when I find myself uploading a batch of photos that follow a theme, I search dA for similar work and create a collection, ie plane wings, light trails - and now glitch art (which I might rename digital decay.)It was very difficult to find those few glitch art deviations though. A simple search for 'glitch' is not helpful at all, but narrowing it to within the digital art gallery does help somewhat. I thought I'd check the rest of the internet, and see what I could find. I found a flickr group, Glitch Art, which has a nice pool of examples of glitch art, and a nicely packaged description of what glitch art is:"The train of 1s and 0s has derailed and you're left with something that originates out of the resulting chaos.Glitch is a short-lived fault or malfunction in a system. Whenever camera lenses erroneously save the data of what they see to it's recording device or whenever the binary code of an image file gets corrupted (intentionally or accidentally), the final result is a faulty image, which we call Glitch.- from Glitch Art's group description on FlickrThey go on to say that images...

One of the things I like about CSS is that no change is too difficult. I don't have to open it in Photoshop and such, or render it all over again. So as a result, I tweak and evolve stylesheets as I use them. And as a result, it becomes a freakin' mess in there. Especially when this particular stylesheet was spawned from this particular journal back in October 12, 2007. I cook them now btw So today I thought I'd spend a few minutes cleaning it up, and add some features I could use often, like thumb features etc. I've written tutorials on CSS for featuring thumbs, and I've used those myself in the past, but it feels good to start from scratch sometimes. I did things differently this time, in terms of both HTML and CSS. It's a definition list, with the icon and blurb in the DT and the thumbs in DD. If you hover over the artist's username you'll see their avatar lights up too, and vice versa (like in the comments on dA.) There's also a nice bit of CSS that keeps the thumbs arranged even nicer than in Journal CSS: featuring thumbs - I'll have to write an update, that journal looks rather crap these days. Not sure about the colours... but lets see how I feel after using things for a while.Been playing GTA: Chinatown Wars lately. Much fun. Watched Big Man Japan too. It's a mocumentary, and at times moves very slowly, but I thought it was brilliant. Anyone had any experiences with the new critique system? Featured deviants Found ~vampryclusture a few hours ago, while browsing for more Melbourne photos for my collection. On a site where photographers can be all too eager to pigeon-hole themselves to a particular style or subject, her gallery in comparison is bursting with creativity. I have $spinegrinder to thank for this next artist, he tweeted one of ~StefanThompson's illustrations as his favourite deviation of the day. Ever since I bought Gift or a Weapon by The Grand Silent System I've wanted to experiment with this sort of stuff myself I love to go exploring in urban environments, and I love the photography of these places. It must have been while searching for urbex photos then, that I found ~baldrickthecunning the other day. It's always with a mixture of envy and awe that I view galleries like his. ...and finally, some recent favourites oho! and I nearly forgot. It's kinda annoying when people stick their entire comment in sup/sub tags. Thanks for making it harder to read guys! Anyhow. It was annoying enough for me to write a 'fix':.ccomment .text-ii>sup,.mcb-body>sup{font-size:inherit!important;line-height:inherit!important}.ccomment .text-ii>sup:after,.mcb-body>sup:after{content:"";font-size:9px;opacity:.5}.ccomment .text-ii>sub,.mcb-body>sub{font-size:13px;line-height:15px}.ccomment .text-ii>sub:after,.mcb-body>sub:after{content:"";font-size:9px;opacity:.5}It wont work in every situation, ie if people use the tags for good rather than evil, well, the CSS above can't tell the difference, but it does add a little note to let you know when small text has been undone. I was thinking of making it revert to small when the comment area is hovered over, but... I hate when stuff jiggles around. I wrote this for myself, if you want, go and use it, but I'm not going to maintain it.

So. I wrote a journal the other day, about seniors, called 'SENIORS SUCK!'As usual when I comment on issues surrounding a current drama on dA, I don't directly link to the guilty party, but I word things so that anyone that already knows about the drama gets the added background history. Everyone else, just reads a journal discussing issues in a general way, and perhaps wonders what specific event triggered it. What ever it looks like though, and you're going to have to take my word for it, I hate drama, especially personal drama. When I write these journals, it's because I see a chance to discuss the issues involved. If we can't talk about it on a higher level without it being drama in itself... then we all need to grow up. But. I just have to get this off my chest. My SENIORS SUCK! journal was about the issues brought up around the recent drama involving =sourcow. There, I said it. =sourcow =sourcow =sourcow =sourcow =sourcow! Okay. I'm over it. Wait: =sourcow!! What an appropriate username, that works on many levels. A sour cow could be someone who's a cow, and sour about stuff, or could mean a cow that gives sour milk, and makes anyone that drinks their milk PUKE IN DISGUST. For someone that bitches and moans about who should or shouldn't be a senior because of the way they behave, =sourcow acts in a manner beyond hypocrisy. For all you monosyllabics, he said don't do bad stuff, and he did big bad stuff. Y'know, do as I say, not as I do. Oh, and plz make me senior too. His journal, the one that started all this shit, was to complain about a comment `Flutterings left him, and that some seniors shouldn't be seniors. But guess what? HE HID HER COMMENT. That's something a twat would do, not a senior. Not even the worst senior. Why? Because we only have his word for it. For all we know (if `Flutterings hadn't let me know, in public btw) he could have left the comment HIMSELF - and we only have his word on what it actually contained. As it turned out, looks like he 'distorted' the truth to gain sympathy or something.Anyhow. I spoke my piece, and had some worthwhile discussions with people, I found out the senior FAQ entry had been updated to something actually useful by $chix0r and more. And then I moved on. I don't hold grudges. If =sourcow had later... I dunno, donated to charity or rescued some drowning kittens, I'd spend a millisecond thinking, hey, that's nice, and move on as usual. But then, today, I get a note from =sourcow:Do you know me ? you sit there and justify your little attack and call me a twat and so on but did i attack you.. so many journals attacking me over some petty little person who thought it was funny to attack me 6 months later over something i voiced about someone who was brought to my attention by a few people..just goes to show i was right about some seniors that shouldnt be seniors .. you all think its fair attacking someone you dont know or even know what was going on..Reasonable enough. But either before or after I'd finished my response to him, guess what? He'd blocked me.And that's when I snapped. That's when I decided to come here and post a journal about it, rather than logging on to ~koopseht. That's when I said to myself, y'know, I was going to keep this between him and myself, but blocking me? That's inviting me to speak my mind on my platform, my journal. That's when I thought: seniors can lose their status for acting like twats, but there's no justice for other wankers acting stupid and causing drama. So this is me, acting on behalf of the universe, balancing shit out. Like some retarded superhero. As for my intended reply:Do I know you? No, not well enough, for sure. But I did see what you wrote, and I did see how you responded to people, and I did find out what this was all about. And you know what? - I know enough to label that kind of behavior as twattish. For all I know, you're a nice guy. But even a nice guy can act like a twat.I wasn't taking part in the personal drama; my journal wasn't about personal drama. I get the feeling perhaps, that you either didn't read, or didn't understand my journal. It's sad and pathetic, especially when you think about what the issue is. Idea theft. Wooptydoo. What is this? Grade school? Why did you even have to write a journal about this? Why did you have to hide their comment? You could have just replied to their comment saying, duh, there's no such thing as idea theft, and left the conversation right there for all to see. Because really, this has nothing to do with them being seniors. You had a disagreement with a person, you should have delt with it between you and them - you didn't have to stand on a big box and yell it to the world. (making yourself look like a twat)So, yes, I think it's fair to write a journal that discusses the issues surrounding what happened. I did not attack you, and to say such is ridiculous. I called you a twat, and a sour cow, but if that constitutes as a 'attacking someone', grow a pair of balls. I...

quick update: I didn't explicitly mention it earlier, but I didn't know who the mystery senior was, nor what they said exactly. Turns out it was `Flutterings, see comment here, so in light of this, my rant becomes something of a hypothetical argument. I always thought the guy was a wanker, so my journal should never have been read as defending him, more using the situation as a starting point for a discussion. I am certainly glad to see this was an example of seniors acting as they should.Another day, another drama. And I'm contributing to it with another of my journals. But I got thoughts, and I gots ta say them! While I think the instigator of this recent 'seniors suck' drama is a bit of a sour cow anyhow, I don't think we should ever argue that the senior tick doesn't mean anything, otherwise, why have it in the first place? Or put another way, I don't think there should be such a taboo around questioning seniors, specifically when they, sorry, we fuck up or say stupid things. This cow was, rightly, although clumsily, defending himself to the claims made that he 'stole an idea' for a photo (that being a water drop on a clover.) They rightly pointed out that, um, you can't exactly own an idea for a photo. Consider for instance: OMG YOU STOLE MY IDEA TO TAKE A PHOTO OF THE SUNSET! It was a stupid thing to say, but it just so happened that a senior said it. And the cow questioned why a particular group of seniors got senior status. Basically, he thinks a select few seniors don't deserve it. Based on experiences like this, I can only assume. But the response I've seen, the resultant drama, and the journals I've read, have made it entirely an issue of defending the senior status. The senior tick should indicate that seniors aren't any old wanker. They're people like everyone else, sure, and it doesn't mean they're saints, or geniuses, or whatever, but they have history. Whatever it was, the hope is that there was a reason they were given the status. And that they're not idiots. I don't think that's raising the bar too high. I don't think that's asking too much. But only an idiot would complain about idea theft, especially the idea of a freakin water drop on a freakin leaf ffs. What is this, grade school? So, since it stands to reason that not just anyone should get seniorship, people will question the worthiness of seniors. It's only natural, right? The particular twat that triggered this journal was questioning things for the wrong reasons perhaps, but it just raised the issue for me. I wonder why it's a taboo to question things? One of the seniors that lost their senior status even lost it because they questioned the worthiness/'quality' of a few from a new batch of seniors, in the seniors forum (not in a journal etc.) Wasn't behaviour becoming of a senior or something. That's not to say that seniors should constantly have to justify themselves, but when a senior fucks up, hey - they fucked up. The rest of us shouldn't see it as a threat to our existence. The rest of us shouldn't mindlessly gang together and support them (or write journals telling everyone why they themselves deserve to be a senior), no matter how sour the other guy is. There was talk, a while back, of perhaps giving seniors some lite moderation privileges, like modding the forums or being able to deal with miscats. When it was realised that not everyone with a ` could be trusted with that responsibility it was dropped. To me, it's kinda sad that we can't be trusted as a group. It indicates, after all, that there are some seniors that shouldn't be seniors; that perhaps, it doesn't mean anything anymore; that perhaps, seniors suck. It only takes a few bad apples to kiss an ass, but that seems to be the currency around here.

note: there are real spoilers to Star Wars in the spoilers below. Don't say I didn't warn you! There's only so many of these 'Journal CSS:' tutorial/journals I can do before I start sharing stranger techniques, so I don't expect everyone to be using this all the time. After I used it in a journal I figured I share it though, so here we go. Actually, this is a modified version, see if you can spot the difference:Original spoiler: Meanwhile, Luke arrives in Cloud City and falls right into Vader's trap. He and Vader engage in a lightsaber duel within the carbon-freezing facilities, eventually bringing them to the city’s central air shaft. Gaining an advantage, Vader cuts off Luke's dueling hand along with his lightsaber. With Luke cornered and defenseless, Vader goads Luke to rule the galaxy alongside him, making the horrifying revelation that he is Luke's father.Alternate spoiler: Padmé gives birth to twins, a boy named Luke and a girl named Leia, and dies, but not before insisting to Obi-Wan that there is still good in Anakin. Meanwhile, Sidious has Darth Vader rebuilt in a cybernetic body armor and respirator suit to keep him alive. Vader lets out a scream of agony when he is told by Sidious that he himself killed his wife. With Anakin's children the last hope for the galaxy, Obi-Wan, Yoda and Organa agree that they should be hidden and separate from one another. Leia is taken to Alderaan to be raised by Organa, while Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooine to live with his in-law relatives. The problem is that if you've made the line-height larger than the font-size (which is often useful for readability, and what I've done above) then the text will flicker as the visitor moves their mouse over it. If you haven't adjusted the line-height, it'll just look like a solid block, and wont suffer from the flicker. To me though, it isn't as interesting without the lines. The advantage of using the first version, is less code, as the second requires a div to wrap around the spoiler paragraph. Even if you choose to go with the second, the first is still useful for inline spoilers that you might want in the middle of paragraphs.Das HTMLOriginal spoiler: SPOILT TEKST GOAD HEERAlternate spoiler: SPOILT TEKST GOAD HEERDas CSSstrike{  background: #000;   color: #000;   text-decoration: none}strike:hover{  background: transparent;   color: inherit !important}.spoiler:hover strike{  background: transparent;   color: inherit !important}You can change the two colour values (in red above) to anything you like - but remember to make them match, otherwise this is all pointless. On hover, the background will be made transparent, and the font colour will be returned to whatever colour the text around the spoiler is....and that's all there is to it. -fin-

I'm not stupid.err. okay, how about: I know that there are things I don't know, and that the more I do know, the more I don't know. but let's just say: I'm not an idiot. I don't believe everything I read in the newspaper or MSM, and I certainly don't believe everything I read on the internet. I use (use? read?) wikipedia quite a bit. While you'll never hear me quote anything I've read on wikipedia as fact, it's accuracy isn't the topic of this short journal. It's the writing. Sometimes, I just have to laugh. Normally, this wouldn't be worth a journal. But it happened twice within a few minutes, so I had to share. First, =bewarecalamity's poll, Does a tragus piercing hurt? had me bouncing to the wikipedia article for tragus piercings, where the following was found:Bleeding is typically low when the tragus is pierced due mostly to the lack of flesh on the tragus, but can sometimes bleed for an hour or so, depending on the person. An easy solution for this is to wipe it with a tissue or paper towel....instead of, I dunno, using a shaggy dog instead. Who writes this stuff?Only a few minutes later, somehow meningitis came into the conversation Nadia and I were having. There's bacterial, viral, and fungal meningitis I said. NO! THERE'S ANOTHER! Nadia insisted. So I go look it up on wikipedia. It mentions "viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms". SEE! She proclaimed, vindicated. Hmmphf. wtf is "other microorganisms" anyhow?, I thought.A microorganism or microbe is an organism that is microscopic (usually too small to be seen by the naked human eye). Err. USUALLY? I'd like to know, under what circumstances can a microorganism be seen with the naked eye. Wait, pardon me: naked human eye. so. Who writes this stuff?oh. right. We do.

Now I've got about 420 shots ready to upload to dA. That's in addition to all the images I had waiting before we left. Yikes. Granted, a big chunk of that are aerial shots I took from the window seat of the plane. I think I'll submit the 'best' ones as deviations, and the rest I'll collect in my scraps. The same for the other distinct sets. Then I'll link to the collection from the deviations.Glad to have figured that out. But... it's still a crazy amount of submitting ahead of me. Aside from the photos, I finally finished the GTAIV DLC, The Lost and Damned. Awesome stuff. I think I'll jump back in and play it again soon, it was a riot. Also downloaded all the new cars in Burnout Paradise. Not all of them, strictly speaking, were worth it, but I always found it fun to drive all the different cars with their varied handling and personalities (yes, I just said the cars have personalities.) The flying DeLorian, I can say, is totally worth it, and the toy cars, thankfully, handle and act differently too. I guess I'll upload a few photos now, and maybe think about cleaning up the mess we left behind before our trip. So. How're y'all doin'?

(subject is a play on The Beatles' song, Back in the U.S.S.R.)I'm typing this from a Eee Pc, awesomely err, donated to me by my uncle. Took some getting used to, and there's not much chance of me editing RAW files on it, but it's good at what it does.Today was Tuesday. It's past midnight, so it's now Wednesday. Our last full day before we head back to the US. On Monday I spent the day with my oldest friend, and practically brother. We played Soul Calibur on my Dreamcast, where much ass was kicked back and forth. We got some food at Nandos, a flame grilled chicken joint that, happilly, seems to be spreading through Victoria. I like Nandos, but they don't have it in the states. Later we went to the city and saw Watchmen. Having previously read, and enjoyed the comic, I watched and enjoyed the movie. I'm not sure anyone could ask for a better, more faithful comic book adaptation. Anyone with a negative opinion needs to lighten up. Monday really... I dunno. Lifted my spirits? It was really good to spend a day with Andrew again. Pity he got a PS3 instead of a 360. He can kick my ass at Soul Calibur all he likes, but I'd make him cry on xbox live. Maybe. That dude is a gaming god. Today, after a quickish visit to my grandma and uncle, which led to visiting another relative around the corner (who lives next to the doctor that removed the toy wheels from my nose. twice. in one day) we then went to visit my other unkle and auntie, and cousins, and my other grandmother. I caught up a little with my cousin, talked a bunch about the old days when we were young and played videogames together, and shared funny stories from back then too. Watched a bit of pre-recorded tv, laughing at the stupid script/acting in Legend of the Seeker (hey, it's that crazy dude from Mad Max 2!) and then saw Bear Gryll use his bare arms to kill stuff and eat it. And fall down stuff. We wanted to meet =masked-racoon, but we missed him... better planning could have fixed that, but in the end we ran out of time. Still, Nadia left him a bunch of goodies. So now, tomorrow is the last full day. We're already packed, thanks to Nadia's foresight. Going to visit the resting places of dad and grandpa, maybe pick up some of my music cds from storage (i'm sick of hearing Depeche Mode in Nadia's car, plus i want to rip some of it to my 360), stop by my grandmas place one last time and do any last minute shopping. I've taken tons of photos, and I've dumped them all onto my uncle's computer. Might actually take more than one dvd to burn them off, gottal love RAW.Not sure what else to say, which is usually a sign it's time to stop typing and post the journal.

I know. I'm in Australia for only a short time. I meant to stay away from computers. But I can't sleep, as usual, so I'm up late, alternating between my RSS feeds in Google Reader, and my devwatch on dA. Oh, and my little funny journal I just posted before this one.Anyhow. To cut to the chase, I read =M-PlayC3ll's journal - Journal > Suggestions > Categories - and what at first was going to be my comment became so long I decided to finally post my thoughts on this topic as a journal. How long? Well, check the time I posted this journal, and compare it to the time I posted the comment in their journal. Right, so, the topic being, dA's Category system. Or specifically, in this case, how I think dA's Category system has outlived it's usefulness and needs to be replaced with a tagging system. I'm full-on serious about this; I hate the category system.oh. and just a reminder. since past journals have taught me so, a disclaimer. I've been using deviantart since august 2001. I'm not some random disgruntled newb. My voice may come across as sarcastic and abrasive. It is. It's an indication that I'm passionate about what I'm writing about. I prefer to show, rather than tell, who I am, and what sort of character I have. But, if you just tuned in, a single random journal is not a fair exhibit to judge me by. So. Feel free to talk about the ideas I express here. But don't judge me until you know me better. Or all hope is lost. I would have put this at the end, but by this point, there's already a higher word count than people are used to reading in the journals on dA When dA was young, and small, it had but a handful of categories - none of them with any sub categories. As time went on, and the work being submitted was more varied and of a greater number, they added sub categories to cater for the different types of work and for ease of browsing. Up till a point, all is well and good. But as time goes on, the category system will prove to be the problem itself, not what categories there are. GMs have to be on their toes, constantly assessing their galleries to tell when new categories are needed. Too many categories makes a mess, but not enough makes an equal mess. Even worse, getting new categories put in is like pulling teeth sometimes. When I was GD of Resources, along with `bleedsopretty, we spent some serious time working on a comprehensive overhaul of the Resources gallery. So far, only Tutorials has seen the update it so sorely needed - and that was years ago now. Meanwhile, deviants are forced to put their work into categories that don't suit them properly. I remember back in the day, before there was a place for Photoshop brushes, we stuck them in the Textures gallery. Today, we're essentially still doing the same thing, only we have a wider selection of wrong categories to choose from (though Photoshop Brushes is still lacking sub categories, years later.)And I'm still waiting to see Resources get the overhaul it needs. Wait, that's - 'Resources and Stock Images' - now. Woohoo for that line-breaking clari-fucking-cation. Anyhow. My point is, categories that need to exist, don't, and categories that don't need to exist, do. And the process for rectifying either, is ridiculous. So. My suggested solution, is... drum roll please... TAGS. OMFG how happy I would be if dA dropped this arcane, cumbersome, category system, and replaced it with a tagging system.TAGS kick some serious ass. Instead of waiting for the bureaucracy to sort it's shit out, people could just choose, for instance, to submit a cosplay photo and tag it with 'cosplay photo comicon09 zelda videogame fanart'. That way, people who look up the fanart tag will see it, people who look up the cosplay tag will see it... and people who look up VIDEOGAME COSPLAY will find it. It's like freakin magic, and could not be done with categories, EVAR. Search lets me kinda pretend dA has tagging, but so long as keywords are this apparently pointless field on the submission form, it's not going to work the same as a full on tagging system, supported by dA's interface. With tags, the category structure evolves on it's own, and makes for a very organic browsing experience. Now. If your response is that the Category System is perfect: you're an idiot. If your response is that tagging is stupid, and wouldn't work: you're an idiot. It works just fine, wait, MOAR than just fine: AWESOMELY, on sites like flickr and delicious. If you ask what will happen to dA's sacred whatever-million deviations that have been submitted: good question. I'd suggest they be auto-tagged with their current category structure Resources>Textures>Misc would become 'resource texture'. Find me a better solution. Some categories, like 'urban & rural' might cause problems, but a solution can be found - this single problem on it's own doesn't justify abandoning tags altogether. Maybe the use the url part for 'urban and rural', 'civilization'? Not the best word, I admit. If you ask, what will happen...

Coming home from Nadia's monthly infusion we got a call from mum, back home in Australia. She didn't have to say anything, I could hear the news. My grandpa had died.A week or so ago, he was rushed to hospital for some sort of stomach pain. I don't know the details yet, but they had to perform risky emergency surgery. He's already had a few health problems, but you'd never have really known. So once again, I'm going home to say goodbye. I basically grew up at my grandparent's house. Mum had a job in the city, at a hairdresser's in what is now Federation Square, so she'd drop me off in the morning. They were great times. When my uncle got a computer... well, I regret it now, but I'd spend more time playing video games than being with them. In time too, I lost my grip on Greek, which was actually my first language. Once I could speak fluently with them, and now I sound like a tourist.Back in the day he was in the army. After the war he was a bomb diffuser, cleaning up the mess of mines and shells I guess? There's a story about the last one he disposed of. It was always told in a simple way, but I used to like imagining it as if from some action movie. While working on it he realised it was about to go off and he was out of time, so telling everyone to hit the deck he hurled it away. No one was seriously hurt, but he burnt his hands. It was while in the army that he got a reputation for being a master chef of souvlakia. Best ever. Even before, I couldn't eat them unless they where his. Now, I'm not sure I'll ever eat them again. He had insisted all his kids finish high school at the very least, at a time where it was common for kids to leave early. This payed off for them- my two uncles, my auntie and mum. It also inspired me to stay in school myself. He was a cool dude. The kinda guy that'd choose when to talk. Who taught by example. heh. He'd also speak fluent English when drunk. And had a neat trick to steal my nose. I'm going to miss him.Γεια σου, παππού. Θα είσαι πάντα στην καρδιά μου.We're leaving on the 18th, coming back on the 12th of March. We're not taking our laptops, to make the airports easier, but also so we don't have the distraction. We'll probably still check our email and messages from time to time, but don't count on it.

I don't want to bump the bushfire journal off my page, but I want to write this while the thoughts are still fresh and swimming in my head.Near my house back in Melbourne (not really Melbourne, about 30 minutes out, but anyhow) there is this big aqueduct that dumps storm water from a whole bunch of suburbs out into the bay (maps.google satellite view). The section near our house is open, like a big concrete canal, and while exploring one day I took a long walk down it. Eventually I brought a friend along and we took it further, up into the closed drain with torches (maps.google streetview of the entrance to the tunnel)It was fun. Anyhow, this friend of mine really got a taste for it, and started meeting up with like minded people and going down other drains and such. Urban Exploration you might know it as. Melbournites might have heard of them as the Cave Clan. So anyway. One day this friend invites me to a massive meet-up in '(the) Dreadnought' - a sewage retarding center, the place sewage goes when the system backs up bad.Yeah. Never been used apparently, though from memory it still stunk something horrid. It was underneath a hockey field I'd actually played on with the school team, and it was a giant cavernous cavey thing. It was an awesome experience.Insert montage of my life up till now, and I'm searching dA for more stuff to cram into my Melbourne collection. That collection was originally populated by deviations found with the simple search of "melbourne", but I found the results quite limited, so I cast a wider net, searching for "flinders street" and other streets around the city center. Today, I thought it'd be awesome to find some urbex photos of the Melbourne underground. I do some searches, getting all sorts of weird crap instead, until one search returns an actual urbex photo. I wasn't sure if was from Melbourne though, so I go check their userpage. And guess-f'ing-what? It's one of the random cave clan dudes that I was at Dreadnought with, ~PTC - "Petey" if I remember right. Actually, I only remembered because he was this real character of a punk. Did some fire-twirling down there too, or at least his friends did. That image was taken from the meet we were both at. It's possible I'm one of the ghostly figures in that shot, but I can't tell. I had taken some of my own, but I've got no idea where they are now. All those bright spots are tea lights for illumination. ...more photos of dreadnought on flickr.So. The point of this journal is. What a small world the internet makes. Doesn't look like he's logged in for ages, and it's not like he'd remember me anyhow. But all the same, pretty cool....or pretty f'ing scary. i dunno ;p

update: The Age has put together a slideshow/video/audio thinger that really communicates the shit that's going on back home. If the news has been surreal or just 'oh, bushfires eh?' visiting this page will snap you awake. The Age, Darkest Day (snatched from ~lisawang's journal)I don't mind saying it got me quite emotional. By now, if you're watching any Australians (in my case, =miksago, =paranthasis and =post-sanity with journals so far), you've probably heard the news about the bushfires ravaging Victoria. I've been away from home, living in Virginia, USA, since November 2006. Each winter I'd read about the fires... but it was never this bad. The heat, and bushfires, come every summer like the snow comes in winter to other parts of the world. But holy shit, an entire town has been destroyed (not really, but for all intents and purposes.) Last year the big news was that smoke from the bushfires had blanketed Melbourne. In ten days, Nadia and I will be going back to Australia for 21 days. The area my family lives in isn't bushfire territory, but it's still going to be a strange time I expect. The death toll keeps rising, it was mid 80s last I read, and there's been something like 750+ homes destroyed. If you'd like to help out, donating to the Australian Red Cross is probably the way to go. Phone in to 1800 811 700, or international deviants can use their website's online donation page - [link] The Salvation Army is also taking donations, but it doesn't look like they accept international donations. Also, if anyone hears of fellow deviants getting caught up in this, perhaps we could get something organised?

Drop shadows aren't something I expect people will use as often as say, mini-thumbs, but it's an effect I thought I'd share anyhow. Drop shadows are fun for headings. sometimes. Drop shadows are fun for headings. sometimes. As the above example suggests, the use of drop shadows is most effective in small doses. The shadow is harder to see on smaller font sizes, it begins to just look blurry. For this reason, I urge you not to use it on your entire journal. That said, it doesn't have to be used in headings only - you could use it to make links POP OUTPOP OUT.DAS HTMLDAS HTMLThe way this effect works is by positioning a duplicate of the text to be shadowed over the text. The 'real' text then becomes the shadow, and the duplicate will be the one on top. The HTML looks like so:ALL DAY I DREAM ABOUT TEXT ALL DAY I DREAM ABOUT TEXTThe div tag that wraps the text could be anything you like. It could be your existing heading div, it could be a tag if you didn't use strong anywhere else. As shown in the example above, it can even be a link tagit can even be a link tag (with one condition, which I'll get to later). You just need to have something wrapping the 'real' and duplicate text, and the duplicate needs to be wrapped in something too.Oh, and remember, if you ever change the 'real' text, you have to update the duplicate too! Otherwise you'll look like a silly pants:I LIKE TENNISUSE THE PENDAS CSSDAS CSS.dshadow{Â position: relative;Â color: #aaa;Â font-size: 40px;Â font-family: fixedsys}.dshadow small{Â position: absolute;Â top: -2px;Â left: -2px;Â right: 0;Â bottom: 0;Â padding: 0 2px 2px 0;Â color: #ccc;Â font-size: inherit}Before I confuse you, the simple explanation is: you don't have to change anything but the colours, font sizes and types. Slightly longer explanation: bigger negative number on top and left makes shadow bigger, but remember to change the two values in padding to match. Now the part where I confuse you. The top and left values (in red) pull the text two pixels up and to the left, revealing the shadow text below it. The padding values must match IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION - in this case those two 2px values are set on RIGHT and BOTTOM (remember the shorthand: TOP RIGHT BOTTOM LEFT.) So if you want to have an unequal shadow, eg. down 2px right 4px, you set top: -2px; left: -4px; and padding: 0 4px 2px 0;. Without the padding, sometimes the two layers of text will wrap lines in different places, and it'll turn everything into a jumbled mess like the USE THE PEN heading above. If you want the text to look like it's lit from the other direction (to have the shadow pop up the top and left side) you change the CSS to:Â top: 0;Â left: 0;Â right: -2px;Â bottom: -2px;Â padding: 2px 0 0 2px;You can also change the font size, font family, and the colours of the text and shadow. The font-size: inherit set in .dshadow small{} means you only have to change the font size in .dshadow{}. DAS FANCYPANTSDAS FANCYPANTSSo, you wanna make links POP OUTPOP OUT eh? The CSS is much the same, only instead of the selector pointing to a div with a class name, it points to links:.journaltext a{Â position: relative; Â white-space: nowrap}.journaltext a small{Â position: absolute;Â top: -1px; Â left: -1px; Â right: 0; Â bottom: 0; Â padding: 0 2px 2px 0; Â font-size: inherit; Â color: #f00; Â display: none}.journaltext a:hover{color: #aaa}.journaltext a:hover small{display: block}.journaltext a:focus{color: #aaa}.journaltext a:focus small{top: 1px; left: 1px; display: block}The first chunk of CSS is straight from the normal shadow CSS, aside from the last line that reads display: none. That last line hides the duplicate text at first, so that there doesn't appear to be a shadow. The second chunk of CSS sets up the :hover state, so that the shadow appears when the link is hovered. The third chunk is for the :focus state (you can tell when something has :focus, because usually it has a dotted outline) so that when the link is clicked, it moves down as though really pressed. Now the important part. white-space: nowrap is used to force the link text to stay on one line, never to be split across two lines. The shadow effect will not work on inline objects if they get wrapped onto two lines. So if you have a really long link text, it'll either leave a big gap in the line above, or be cut short by the right edge of your journal. If you don't want the effect applied to all links, wrap the special popup link in another tag you never use, or, sigh, a div tag with a class name. If you use a div tag, remember to set it to display: inline.DAS SECRET FEATUREDAS SECRET FEATUREAn accidental consequence of how I coded this means that if you nest the tags inside eachother, duplicate text inside duplicate text inside .... etc, you end up with:WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!WOW!...which looks kinda neat, but can't be read. With some modification of the CSS, we can get something that looks, y'k...

Recently I've felt like maybe featuring my recent favourites etc, but I was wondering what the general vibe was in regards to featuring thumbs. As of writing, there's one vote between 'meh, I kinda like them' and 'I love them!' but it's still pretty clear that they're definitely worth doing. So on with the features!Cave Story (洞窟物語, Dōkutsu Monogatari)If you haven't played Cave Story, well, you should. A port is heading to the Wii soon, but you can still get it online for various systems. Here is a sample of the Cave Story fan-art that I've collected here on dA: Having played both the PC and homebrew PSP version, I prefer the PSP port, but I'm keeping a lookout for the Wii version too. Visit the wikipedia link above to learn more about this classic indie game.Recent FavouritesI've been neglecting my devwatch lately, how much so directly related to the time spent playing 360 games. Still, I have been checking stuff out. Here are some of my recent favourites: :thumb107792554: =xqz-moiA very recent addition to my devwatch. Kinda like finding a comedian who just seems to match your sense of humor, I feel the same with their eye for photography. That's all for now.
Updated on 29th of Jan, 2009 - to tidy up the HTML a tiny bit, and incorporate some of the new journal CSS goodies since this was first published in 2007. Old version can still be found here.I've set up a demo journal here so you can see how a normal journal might look, without all the red instructions and junk. This is a nameless journal skin I'm offering to anyone who wishes to use it, as part of my Creative Journal CSS guide/tutorial (WIP). I guess if you need to refer to it by name somewhere, you can call it "thespook's simple journal skin".Content is king in my world, so it's about as simple looking as it gets. It's also simple to use because of this, with a minimal amount of custom elements (ie special div tags) to remember for daily use. This isn't a 'locked' skin that you must use as-is; I encourage people to toy around with it and make it their own. Hopefully it is easy enough to figure out, but if you have any problems feel free to leave a comment here, or note me. For extra features and special effects see my sidebar on the right. Some of them have already been incorporated into this version, but check back from time to time (or watch me would be easier I guess) because now and then I write a new journal with CSS goodies. The CSS can be found at the bottom. The HTML is found in red inside the elements in question. I haven't shown the closing tags because they should be obvious, but in case you're a HTML noob, closing tags are the same as the opening tags, with the addition of a / - ie ... The image header is an optional addition - an example of how you can customise the base code I'm offering. The default CSS will not include it, but I have included the code you could use to customise it - keep in mind though that to get the random header image you'll need access to a webserver with php enabled and this script (horizontal breaker - is self closing, so you only need to write '' for it to work) Barnaby The BearBarnaby The Bear's my name, never call me Jack or James, I will sing my way to fame, Barnaby the Bear's my name. Birds taught me to sing, when they took me to their king, first I had to fly, in the sky so high so high, so high so high so high, so - if you want to sing this way, think of what you'd like to say, add a tune and you will see, just how easy it can be. Treacle pudding, fish and chips, fizzy drinks and liquorice, flowers, rivers, sand and sea, snowflakes and the stars are free. La la la la la, la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la la la la la, so - Barnaby The Bear's my name, never call me Jack or James, I will sing my way to fame, Barnaby the Bear's my name. la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la la la la la, so - Barnaby The Bear's my name`thespook in his journal 'simple journal style'There's a voice that keeps on calling me. Down the road, that's where I'll always be. Every stop I make, I make a new friend. Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again. Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down, Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on. Give it what you think. You don’t want you to reach down. Don’t be gone in a clutter on the other side? You don’t wake me. till someone cares. You don’t want to be where the dead ones, we are all she gets bombers in the 1980s’. For too much I stole. It’s a dirty little secret. Cause we like it hurts to be told. No forgiveness no mercy. Listen up! any second glance? Never. again never again but since I felt the same. You don’t see progress just repetition same old song.THUMBS!Everyone likes to share/feature thumbs in their journals, and I've provided a number of special ways to do so. You can still just dump down thumbs any way you like, but using the following divs+class names will spice things up a bit.The only HTML you need to use is the div tag around your thumb codes. In the case of the mini-thumbs, if you find yourself using the clear version more often, change the CSS to remove the background/border from the normal version. CSS:.journaltop {background:#fff}.journaltop img {display:none}.journaltop {	margin-bottom:70px;	font-size:10px;	color:#333}.journaltop h2 {	color:#222!important;	font-size:28px}.journalbox {	border:1px solid #999;	max-width:600px;	margin:0 auto 20px auto;	background:#fff;	padding:100px 50px 0 50px;	position:relative}.journaltext {text-align:justify}.journaltext strong {font-size:18px}blockquote {	font-style:italic;	font-size:20px;	text-align:left;	background:#eee;	padding:5px 58px 10px 58px;	margin:0 -58px;}blockquote small{	display:block;	font-size:13px;	text-align:right;}.note {	padding:10px 58px;	border:solid #FFFF8B;	border-width:2px 0;	background:#FFFFA2;	margin:0 -58px;}a {	color:#00f;	text-decoration:none!important}a:hover {color:#f00}.thumbs {	background:#eee;	border:solid #ddd;	border-width:1px 0;	padding:5px 58px;	margin:0 -58px;	text-align:center}.thumbs .shadow{	background:none!important;	display: inline-b...

[link]In regards to this recent drama... watch/listen to the video above for what I think about it. People get fired all the time. People lose their jobs... all the time. Why should this one person expect to get all this 'support', why should one person deserve it? How the fuck is it a situation worthy of prayers? People's family members have died and they got less of a community pouring out, fewer prayers. It's pathetic. In these shitty economic times, plenty of people are losing their jobs. If they're the only one to fall from dA's ranks, we should be so lucky. I wonder if all these hand wringers leaving their thoughts and prayers can actually quantify why this person should be worthy of so much of their time and thoughts. We should all have better things to do.So. People will come and go. But if they want our respect, if they want my respect, they don't ask for it. They put on a brave face, have a lolly, and do it for the sake of the community's sanity. They don't puff smoke and mirrors and wind people up.I'm not a total monster though. I do care in some small way. But no different to any other GD leaving. No different to any other staff leaving. Oh, they were fired! Oh. Not 'let go'? Fired, eh? Oh. That makes all the difference then, doesn't it. That means that perhaps there was a reason, right? But pray for her. Pray for us all.

Yes. I'm about as lucky as a sausage when it comes to my website. My domain has expired, and for the time being I'm unable to renew it. I only noticed the last night because my webcam wasn't loading, but it had been down since the 12th I had set it up through my old employer's partner program, which means I'm locked out. The company got sold on after I left, so it's going to be interesting to get a hold of someone that can help. It also explains why I wasn't reminded to renew it. Gah. Anyhow. Just thought I'd mention it. On a lighter note, I rented The Orange Box the other day and ploughed through HL2 and the two episodes, and Portal too. I always knew Valve was the shit, but now I know it first hand. And I'm convinced the reason Gordon never talks is because he's mute. One of the coolest gaming moments in recent memory is now the scene in Episode 2, the beginning of chapter 2. That bit when you're in that breach area with all the tunnels and the turrets and the lights to indicate how many ant lions are coming. When the music picks up and they start flooding the area, hot damn! I got goosebumps. Like I said in a twitter update, "[it's] like discovering that most awesome movie you knew was awesome, but never saw. Only it's a game..."Now the wait for episode 3. Lost and the Damned comes out soon though. There's always something to get distracted with

so I was thinking. isn't it interesting that the most popular collections are usually drawing references/tutorials ...or nude art that (and I don't think this requires any stretch of the imagination) has been collected for people to wank to? Quite helpful, wouldn't you say? The tutorials I mean, you dirty sod. my other thought, and this has been something I've been dreaming about for a while now, is that deviantart should provide us with some sort of archive tool that will output all our data into some format we can browse offline. I recently read about AOL shutting down a service they called 'Hometown', and was kinda shocked to read that many many people lost everything. I'd hate to see that happen to us on deviantart. Though I'd like to think it'll be around for ever, what if it's not? What happens when it finally has to shut down, or some other catastrophe severs us from accessing years worth of memories and data. I've been here, writing journals, submitting artwork and recieving comments for seven years... that's a big chunk of my life. And I've always wished there was a way to back my shit up.A few times actually, there have been server crashes that have lost people's files/images. In those cases, I'd be on the side of people saying 'I told you so - you should have backed up your shit!' ... but it's not that easy to backup journals, especially when you have pages of comments, or when you have seven years worth, or deviation pages to preserve the comments you received. It wouldn't be that hard to implement, though it would be pretty intensive work for the servers... so perhaps they could restrict how often you request a backup, or shit, I wouldn't care if they charged me for it. I just know if they don't make an official archive available, someone will write a spider to do it

English is great isn't it? We have wonderfully joyous and fun festivals... where people go to err... fester in the dank recesses of detritus? No, wait, that can't be right. Forget rules, English basically requires you memorise the unique spelling (and meaning) of each word much like you'd need to memorise Japanese characters. How many other languages have horrors like to, two, and too? It's crazy and illogical, but I still love it, even more after I read about the history behind it in a book called 'Spellbound: The Improbable Story of English Spelling' a few years back. If you can borrow it from a library, or find it some other how, I strongly recommend it. It's well written, and actually quite entertaining. Otherwise, if you're interested, the great all knowing oracle can give you the unbiased no original research version: History of the English language on wikipedia. Oh. And if you're thinking... okay, wtf: RANDOM! - allow me to explain. On the way back from Nadia's Tysabri infusion we noticed a car with the license plate 'FESTIV' and I blurted out 'FESTIV? eeeewww - YUCK!' She looked confused, so I explained the fester/festive, festering/festival play on words. She laughed () and insisted I post a journal about it to share the mirth. She's taking a nap right now though, after each infusions she's getting more and more tired. A lot of people on tysabri have that problem, but it hasn't really affected her that much, and before today she's never had to take a nap for it. ...aha, and now she's up and ready to eat the pizza I made for her earlier - time to end this journal.

I'm writing this in part because sometimes I just feel like writing a journal. But also so I can push my last journal off my userpage The new userpage customisation looks interesting. Certainly a welcome update to be able to affect the layout of our own userpages, but lets see where this goes. Got a subscription to gamefly.com a month or so ago. Don't know why I didn't do it sooner, because it kicks ass. First game we rented was Left 4 Dead. Nadia and I had a lot of fun playing split screen co-op every other night or so. We knocked back a few of the achievements in the process too. Some fairly, others naughtily. The way it works is you create a list of the games you want to rent, in order of priority, and when you send the last one back they'll ship out the next one available. The next one I had set was Mirror's Edge, but seems that was booked out because today I got the next one I set - Beautiful Katamari - instead. Once I got my head/hands around the odd control setup (again; I've played it before on the PSP) it was fun enough. I love the game, but I got to the 'end' rather quickly. It has a co-op mode too, although it puts you both in control of the same katamari, which is confusing and frustrating at first. We cleared the level, but I'm still not sure I know what the heck was going on in terms of how the control works with the two of us. Probably where the game manual would come in handy - something they don't send you. It's still got about a week's worth of play left in it I think. I had to stop playing earlier than I expected today because I started getting sorta motion sick. I get that way with some games. Crackdown was the last, and before that it was really only Duke 3D and the Doom games. Doesn't always happen with first person games, and with Crackdown I got over it after a while. meh. could have been nothing, maybe I was just tired. side from that. well. got some of those journal css tutorials lined up, but I also need to go back and finish/edit the current ones. a bunch of other things too... but eh, time for some art before I go help Nadia with her craft bidness.First, not sure if I've mentioned it in a journal before, but a while back I started getting pretty strong pangs of homesickness, so I started up a collection titled 'Melbourne', which features deviations (mostly, if not exclusively photographs) featuring... well... Melbourne (wikipedia). ...I'd include more, but then again, how easy would it be for you to go view the full collection, eh? Melbourne!
