O-M-G! I am like SO totally proud of this picture... and stuff (Don't ask, I never know how to start off descriptions)

So I was talking with ~Zinx95 yesterday and out of a random impulse, I asked her what to draw and she said Anton... and here we are now!

There are a few things I never realized before I drew this:
1. He is SUPER PALE
2. His hair is a PAIN IN THE NECK to draw
3. The shape of his eyes
4. That it was really fun :'D

So I'd like to gift this picture to who I have underappriciated all this time ; ^ ;

I beat Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box a while ago. It was an absolutely beautiful game. The combination of frustratingly scintillating puzzles, gorgeously detailed and often steampunky backgrounds, and dramatic mysterious plot makes the Professor Layton series the most addicting of all video games to me.

With this picture I used a new technique with lace that I love: lay down a wet ink wash, press lace on, let dry, remove lace. It made awesome results! And then the brown ink gave neat colors and texture to the Copic marker coloring on top. And my new white ink for highlights. I love collecting new supplies and techniques.

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS and MATURE THEMES.

But the most astonishingly beautiful moment in this game is one that I think should be chronicled in the annals of video games with great honor. It is when you blow on the microphone to open the secret part of the box. Everything surrounding that moment, the story, images, and music, are perfect, and what is so incredible is this: at all other times I can think of in video games, the character you are "being" is doing things like running, jumping, swimming, fighting monsters, etc, but what you are physically doing to perform these actions is pushing buttons and moving control sticks. Even the Wii, with its motion-sensing stuff, is more a fun gimmick than actually doing the same action. But here, with this last puzzle, you the player are doing exactly what your counterpart in the game is doing. And the beauty and symbolism of a breath, with the little sunrise on the box and the real sunrise surrounding, my heavens, how beautiful.

I am now going to take a leaf out of my friend ~Mahira-chan's book and write a philosophical essay that one would expect rather to be in a journal. ^_^

I immediately wanted to draw fanart of the romance that the revelations at the climax of the game center on- it's beautiful. But yet, there's something:

Before I had gotten very far in the game, ~eightcrows had asked me, "Is it all right to ship a pairing where they do something wrong?" meaning, fornication. And I said, "Yes. The romance can be good and you can believe in and like it without thinking everything they did was good." I stand by that. But you have to be careful. The first romantic pictures that came into my mind to draw of Anton and Sophia were a bit overly erotic (not by general standards, but by my standards.) I felt licensed to do this because they had fornicated, but I was wrong.

Shortly after I beat the game, I was online in the Catholic blogosphere, and read till the wee hours of the morning. I learned that some of the interpreters of the Theology of the Body seem to have gone off the deep end, towards Adamitism and saying that some horrible practices are fine as long as one is married and not using contraception, all to the end of increasing pleasure because sexual pleasure is seen as a kind of mystical experience. I never understood why interpreters of the Theology of the Body were necessary, when one could just read what HH Pope John Paul II said in his Wednesday addresses. And if you stick with what he said, it's wonderful and gives great spiritual insight. It's the interpreters who seem to have misinterpreted and gone too far. (I say "seem" because I don't know enough to pass sure judgement, but it does seem that way.)

Anyway, I read Dr. Alice von Hildebrand's article on the problems with the ToB representation, particularly Christopher West's work. It was a very very good article, and she made many great points. Here it is: [link] I'm not going to rehash her argument, but one thing that struck me reading it is how much she loves her deceased husband, the immense respect she has for him. And it's not at all slavish, simpering, or sentimental. It's an intelligent loving regard for the nobility she sees in him. Nothing here to displease a genuine feminist (that is, one who believes that women as women are of equal value and honor to men ontologically, spiritually, and mentally, and shouldn't have to act like men to be respected,) it is because she is so intelligent, erudite, and devout that she can appreciate his intelligence, erudition, and devotion.

But what does this have to do with Anton and Sophia? Well, Alice von Hildebrand speaks of a necessary veil that should be drawn over sexual acts, not of shame but of respect for their dignity. She says one of the problems with West's ToB is it has no veil, but goes into graphic detail in the name of removing shame, but actually vulgarizing the conjugal act.

Now, Anton and Sophia were not married, so there was something wrong about their making love. Thus to portray it enticingly, romantically, would be to glorify and make attractive a sin. But also, there was in their act the glory of a man and a woman in a procreative unitive act, and thus the veil of proper dignity is also called for. So I shouldn't have intended to draw something somewhat erotic, because it would glorify the wrongness and violate the goodness. Instead, I made for them something more delicate, sweet, and old-fashioned, which I think fits the vaguely Victorian setting and focus on true gentility of the Professor Layton games.

In The Power and the Glory, Graham Greene's novel of the Mexican persecution in the 1920s, the main character, an alcoholic priest who fathered an illegitimate daughter, says something approximate to: "Do not hate sin for its ugliness, for then you see it has such beauty..." The beauty he sees is however not in the sin itself but in his love for his daughter, and in that love he gains the strength to die for Christ. Anton too is saved through love of his progeny, the daughter of his illegitimate daughter.

Sex (naturally practiced) has been analogously called a "natural sacrament," and it is ex opere operato in its life-giving power. And thus good can come out of evil. The child, while a cause of the tragedy in necessitating Sophia's departure, also gave hope and finally the breaking of the curse illusion through her own daughter, for whom she gave her own life in bringing to birth. I intend another picture (with another philosophical rambling) focused on her.

It is a complicated business, love, sin, and hope. The sin itself was committed in the hope of the lie of fornication becoming the truth of the marital embrace. The resulting child prevented the realization of that hope, but then two generations later gave hope and ultimately redemption.

A beautiful game.

I've opened my heart here, but I anticipate some folks will be angered, since society today proclaims that when it comes to sex, there is no such thing as wrong. (Even rape and pedophilia are celebrated here on DA.) All I can say is I believe that sex is sacred, procreative and unitive in purpose. And I will so believe no matter how angry it makes anybody. And I will hide and block people who express that anger in any way not befitting a gentleman. Thank you.

Finally, I was able to get some of my Professor Layton fanart posted!!! This series is so incredible: its music, the charcters, and, of course, the plot. Passing up this series is easily one of the greatest gaming mistakes one could make!

...ahem.... anyway... sorry for the rant there...

Diabolical Box (aka Pandora's Box) is definitely my favorite out of the series. I cried buckets at the end, and I never cry when playing games! So, I definitely HAD to make a some fanart for the game. Anton Herzen in easily my favorite character in the series hands down. Not exactly a perfect drawing on my behalf, but I think it still turned out pretty nice. Expect more fanart from me for this series come future posts!

When we were picking out the themes for this week's pictures I chose Anton and Gemma was all, "Damn, I was going to say that!" so she picked Descole instead. Descole is good at being second best.

I've been trying to save the single character themes for a time when I'm really busy, because they take a lot less time to draw then a picture with three or more characters on does. But I figured that actually I'm really busy with work right now as it is, so it couldn't hurt to dip into the easier themes a bit.

So here's Anton posing with a sword (and no, I have no idea how swords are supposed to look ) and a rose. In the name of the moon he will punish you. XD

I think I like how the eyes turned out on this one more than on the picture I drew of him last week.

Two of three pictures that I said to that I'd draw.

The third one hasn't been started yet, but hopefully it won't take too long for me to get it done.

Since she has been waiting forever for this picture though, I decided to add on a bonus Tuxedo Descole instead of just drawing Sailor Anton on his own. I'm a little sad that I can't find a funnier-sounding way to combine "Tuxedo Mask" and "Jean Descole" than Tuxedo Descole, though. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Not much to say here, just pure crack. I gave Anton more of a feminine body than I usually would, because when I was looking through the Sailor Moon manga for references, it amazed me just how over-the-top the proportions were. Especially the legs. Those are some crazy, long, skinny, impossible legs in that Sailor Moon manga. XD

Anton Herzen, with real name Anthony that he keeps a secret from anyone, is the main antagonist in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. I never would've thought that an artwork mix of American cartoon and Japanese anime could create such a hot pretty curly man.

This one is a close-enough-to-realism style that I chose, lol. I've always had a thing for 2D pretty curly boys such as Joshua from The World Ends with You <[link]>, and my word! Professor Layton series has Anton Herzen!

I was shocked at The Diabolical Box ending that Anton is actually... *sob* Nevertheless, I still love Anton no matter what. So this is a tribute from me.

I drew the line art for this sexy little Prof. Layton vampire on Christmas eve, then started the colouring on Boxing Day, continued a little into the beginning of January, and only today have i been bothered to finish it! X3 I also have one of Jean Descole, but thats not coloured so...
Anyway, im not actually very pleased with the way this turned out - Lol, i was so lazy with the colouring~ And i wanted to use my white pen to draw on some stars in the background, but that ran out, and i dont have any white acrylics left, so i had to leave them out!

Here's an angry and crying Anton Herzen in the cover of my first Professor Layton fanfic: "In the Eyes of the Delusional". There are two more fanfics I'll be doing, and this is the first one in the trilogy. Expect the covers soon even before I work on them!
It's actually my first time writing in the prose format too, and I'm so happy people liked how it turned out so far

It's the written version of my storybook I've been previewing in one of my journal entries (and in my drawing blog), and the more detailed version of the story. The storybook focused more on Anton's side of the story in The Diabolical Box, and so since the fic is based on this, it'll be retelling Anton's point of view as well.
