At my Aunty Bel's place the other day...she has the most awesome trees...and cockatoos come and sit in them...

and it was a dark and gloomy day...not manipulated...

today I saw `FixMeKnow's The Birds and I remembered mine and I looked at it again and realised that it needed framing...and resizing...because it used to be MASSIVE...so yeah... I'm resubmitting it.... I put the original (without the border) into my scraps... so take a look at that one too if you like...

please note - "the other day" was about 6 months when I was in Sydney, staying with my nonna...it was also when I didn't know very many of you lot at all...note the date...

Anyways...I kind of want to bring your attention to older work because hardly anybody ever goes through anyone's gallery to look at the older stuff and I really think that that's a shame because there's some really good stuff back there...if you take the time to look...

I'll admit it; I've suddenly got this huge obsession with comic books/ characters ever since X-men 3 came out. I've watched the old 90's X-men cartoons, X-Men: Evolutions, and then I found out Superman Returns was due out later in the summer! So, I watched Batman Begins, All the Justice League episodes (Both the normal and unlimited), and even read a couple of DC comics as well. I also wikipediaed (Yes, I'm making that a verb) every single character I could think of, and thus stumbled about the "Birds of Prey".

So, yeah; Katie here kind of reminded me of them (Feathers?), and the picture was all dark and stuff, so hence the title!

I really tried to aim for a comic book feel when I was vexeling this; I tried to do cel shading, but that looked absolutely horrible, so I vexeled the face in three different styles and lowered the opacity on all of them, creating this end effect.

The feathers... ugh, took me about a day to do. I will never, ever attempt a picture with feathers ever again.

EDIT:
AHHH I can't believe I got a DD for this! I took some peoples advice from here and vexels.net, and lowered the opacity of the outline slightly .

A twisted version of Snow White that I made up, with the irony that instead of the Queen, it is Snow White who uses the poison apple. Sorry if I ruined anyone's favorite childhood story But I like dark themes xD

Cherry Blossom Birds

Birds of Paradise

2x3 feet, acrylic on linenboard.

This began as an abstract and evolved slowly from a seascape into a fantasy jungle landscape. It was fun to do, and much smaller than the scale I usually paint on. Since I don't have a proper studio right now, I propped it up on my laundry rack on the back porch (cough-fire escape-cough) and worked outdoors. As a result, it looks much better in natural light and seems a touch dark indoors. My favourite part is the bizarre little parakeet perched among the flowers (the flowers, incidentally, are the titular birds of paradise)

Birds of Paradise has been sold. but I do take commission work... hint hint. ^_-

Yellow birds, You're not like that crows.

Even if I draw picture which on first view looks for random person maybe positive, I still see it isn't. :"D

I don't draw Vivian so often, but She is still my most important girl character... and one of few my girl characters which I like. X"D (Because I have not a lot girl characters). She should have blue eyes, but I realized that I imagine Her with dark brown been a while. (I like more dark eyes than light.) (But I have light blue eyes too. v___v)
The white hair chararacter is her friend Claude, who is someone like brother for her. He has not a lot good destiny and so much nice character. Vivian and Claude are the best friends of Mety, who is actually main hero of my story... and They have nice relationship between them.
The place on background is one of most nice places in my story, because... The story have not really much nice environment to living.
Yellow birds because I like them, but I'm not sure if this has something common with the story. But... some kinds of birds are really important.

Time: about 10 hours? I don't know....

Birds of Prey

Having been more than disappointed by the actual Birds of Prey TV show (Dinah Meyer as Barbara was pretty much its only saving grace) and being absolutely overjoyed that the great Gail Simone is back at writing my favorite gals in an all new on-going series, I decided that a perfect way to homage the Birds was to make them the subject of my next TV DCU photomanip.

The casting here is against type for at least 3/4, some would argue 4/4, but I really like it. I like going against type and I hate superhero shows and movies that cast supermodels with no wits and next to no acting talent as characters who are always very visually appealing, yes, but are also strong, emotional, complex, sometimes utterly hilarious...in one word, human. And not the plastic things wearing spandex that TV or the movies sometimes make them. You will not see freaking Megan Fox or Jessica Alba in my DCU.

So, I went against type and I'm proud of it.

Helena Bertinelli/Huntress - Charisma Carpenter of Buffy and Angel. Probably the only one who makes sense because she got to kick some ass as Cordelia, but she was also the comic relief of those shows, and Helena is kind of the dark and brooding type. Still, Charisma has shown wonderful range in the last couple of seasons of Angel so I'm sure she could pull it off.

Barbara Gordon/Oracle - Linda Cardellini, from Freaks and Geeks to E.R. to Brokeback Mountain, she always seems to play women that are very strong on the outside but also hide fears and regrets. Babs fits the bill. Linda is an amazing actress and she's hot in that geeky/sweet way that makes her perfect for Barbara.

Zinda Blake/Lady Blackhawk - Portia De Rossi, better known for being Mrs. Ellen DeGeneres, this gorgeous aussie has shown that beautiful women with luscious blonde hair can also be hilarious. With Ally McBeal, Arrested Development and Better Off Ted in her resume Portia has delivered some of the best deadpan humor on TV in the last few years. Zinda's kind of rougher and her humor's definitely broad and showy, but I can see Portia going for that too.

Dinah Lance/Black Canary - my original actress for Dinah was Elisabeth Röhm of Angel fame, but I decided to be bold and choose somebody who's closer to Dinah the hilarious, sassy girl who hangs out with Wildcat rather than deadly warrior Dinah (Elisabeth Röhm would have been better in that department). So, in the end I went with somebody who is relatively unknown, but a beautiful and great actress nonetheless. Andrea Anders was last seen in Better Off Ted and she played such a fun, sassy, kind of clumsy but also very smart character that I couldn't help thinking of Dinah.

My favourite shot of the whole trip. I was talking photos of the Tomb with the wonderful design on it when I heard those birds, I looked up and I remember saying "Stay there, stay there, don't move" haha!!! And they just flew around in circles for a little while so I got my shot

There was a serious amount of birds flying around the Priory. They wouldn't shut up But then they give me shots like this!!! I'm lucky with birds!!! Haha!!!

This work is dedicated to an album i really love, called "Lady & birds" !

I wanted to work with color and emotion. Something dark in color but soft into the representation... i wanted something like a draw... it was a little bite long. About 6 hours but i think the result is not so bad... one thing i'm sure it's that i can see what i wanted to create with the feeling i have when i listen this album ^^

Birds Of Prey 5 pg 18-19 - RAW

Here's a penciled double splash page to Birds Of Prey #5, this page features Helena (Huntress) and Zinda (Lady Blackhawk). Just thought you might like to see a bit more of the "behind the scenes" so to speak as the actual book just hit the shelves on wednesday! I didn't have a chance to really clean up this scan so I apologize for the dark spots. Nonetheless this was a headache to draw as there were still ten panels to this double splash and to top it off it was set in the busy streets of Bangkok! Hope you like it!

Interesting fact: Some people don't know but I actually lived abroad in Bangkok for almost 3 yrs, so the backgrounds are probably more accurate than the norm. I think this might be just before the intersection of Asoke and Sukhumvit by the 711.

I'll post some more select pages from this issue later!

The Woodpecker has powers of the wind, being able to jump extremely high and to glide is a burst of speed.
Like a paper airplane, he/she can fly for a short period of time before gliding back on the ground.

(( So this is pretty much why Italy keeps Basilio around. He reminds him of the bird he looked after when he was little.

Unfortunately that young bird died later on from disease, and when he was young there was not much people could do for such creatures.

This one takes some thought to figure out how this bird can use the egg ability. =AuraGuardianHadou and I have to agree that having a humanoid bird changee laying eggs is really awkward.

He suggested that the parrot will materialize eggs while later I added on the ability to breathe a cloudy mist that will materialize into an egg.

Here's the toucan and how his boomerang ability works.

If you look at a real toucan's beak, it isn't as heavy as it looks. Inside the beak are light, spongy materials and a hollow center. The exterior is made out of the same stuff as our fingernails. [link]

Here's a big, humanoid Epic Quail for you.

Rest assured that he doesn't explode completely. The Black Quail explodes like something out of DBZ, but kept his whole body intact.

Since every bird has some sort of super power (like Blue can multiply into two more and Yellow has power over wind as a speed boost), The Black Bird has control over fire. He can't use it for projectile fireballs, but he can make him self glow fiery red before he activates his explosive power.

UPDATE: I kind of left out the grey eye markings. I also fixed the shading on his lower jaw.
DA, please update the pic without glitching out and not doing so.

WARNING!!!!SOME SPOILER HERE!!!!!

famke janssen as jean grey aka phoenix/dark phoenix..well....what can i say...she's really the manifestation of chaos and dark emotions..would you believe that she killed scott,prof.x and other mutants(of course in the movie)before i already had a hint that i wont see a bird-shaped flame but the way they portray her on the movie does'nt really need that flame the "feeling" is there.instead she have an invisible flame that turns everything in ashes!!!i hope i can find a pic where she's using her power w/ those veins on her face,her eyes dark!!!but i dont care i will still make that shot!!!can't wait for the dvd!!!famke janssen did a great job portraying the dark phoenix!!!and i heard that there's gonna be a solo movie of wolverine!!!
as for the drawing i really intend to make it a little darker than the refference pic. to exagerates her energy and character.

I had a plain 'ol Blaziken, Combusken, and Torchic picture -unfinished, but off to a start. I finally got motivated and put my time into this, especially by using several different graphite darknesses and yadda yadda yadda. This took quite a while, but I like it.

The Blaziken line of pokémon starts with a precocial (meaning they're basically born ready and equipped to run around soon after birth) fluffy chick with a body attuned to extreme temperature and flame. They have pouches of gas in their bodies that they can release through different exits of their body -primarily through their mouth and pore-like openings in their claws- and the gas combusts in direct contact with air with the compressed and hot air that they release the gas with. Their genetic (and phenotypical) makeup shows that they are related to secretary birds [link] -birds of prey with long armored feet adapted to be protected from and destructive to their primary prey -snakes. They are considered to be transgenic (i.e. animals with genes of often entirely different species) creatures -transgenic with human genes, developing their humanoid structure as they grow into Combusken and Blaziken- but it is still being investigated.The combination of their body structure and fighting style -quite often with their powerful feet- have been the main factors in concluding relations to secretary birds (the birds with powerful feet and legs) and humans. With the genes they possess, scientists are slightly bothered with the misnomer of their species -the "chicken" aspects of their common names- since they are birds of prey rather than poultry. Given their elemental conditioning, the Blaziken line has chosen to live in desert and grassland areas, particularly where volcanic vents can be found (like those of Saudi Arabia) so that their bodies can be conditioned and attuned to the high temperatures and materials (not to mention raw energy that can be used). Their hunting style is often foraging, disturbing snake burrows and stomping on (and/or burning) any snakes in sight. They do, however, use more violent and dangerous tactics of creating wildfires (often using teamwork) to drive animals out of certain areas. They wait along perimeters of their own fires for animals escaping the areas and snatch up their catches. Such hunting style is depicted in this observant drawing depicting all three "species" in the same area.

_{The local zoo was holding a photo safari today so my friend and I reserved and bought those special tickets and spent 2 hours being told what we already knew because we missed the fact that it's almost a full beginners class, but still It was a great feeling to pet some animals and feed the Camels ^^ I also finally got the use of my Canon's manual options, I was having troubles with that but now it's all just perfect!}

Whoa. I made something out of a worldwide sensation that I liiike.

This is Light-Blue Bird #00
He substitutes the Blue Bird, the one with the brown markings under his/her eyes, in Kombo's animation shorts.

There's something funky about this creature. If you look closely in the cartoon, when he gets mad he gets a slight makeover, fatter head-feathers and longer break. I have a picture for you that will explain it. He has Ridley's face. It must've been Ridley's one and only son.. or MISSINGNO's true face!! [link]
