I've had a lot of people asking about what I did to improve, so i'll post my answer here instead of replying to each individual query:

The main method I recommend is practice, practice, practice! I know it sounds boring and cliche, but improvement doesn't happen overnight ;u; ultimately your drive and the amount of time you spend drawing will determine how much you improve. _{so try not to spend too much time watching tv/browsing the internet/socializing, and focus more time on drawing!}

There are many tutorials I have read and tried out, but the ones that I learned the most from are probably:

1. [link] (having a basic colouring process, eg. starting with lineart -> adding base colours -> adding shadows on the skin -> colouring the eyes -> adding shadows to the hair -> etc.) Learning how to have a basic colouring process has certainly helped me to get a bit more 'organized' when I add colours to a sketch. There are also a lot of technical things i've learned from this tutorial too, such as colouring the 'whites' of people's eyes with grey, where the basic shadows on the face lie (under the eyebrows/around the eyes, under the nose, the cheeks, and under the mouth), how to add more detail to hair, and most importantly, that hair on the head has a parting! _{unless the person you're drawing has their hair slicked back}

2. [link] (colour theory) I used to have no idea about colour complements, and I always used to use saturated colours (such as in the 2010 picture above), and therefore I wasn't able to decide on a unified colour palette/theme (bright red, bright blue, and cream splashed throughout the ENTIRE picture? ), whereas in the 2012 picture, the majority of the picture is blue, whilst there is only a small area of bright red (the flower), and the red in her dress, which was originally too saturated, has been toned down so it doesn't compete with the bright blue in the other areas of the picture, and also to stop her from looking like a giant tomato.

3. [link] (colouring process) I used this tutorial quite a lot when I was getting started with digital art, and it's definitely the one that taught me the most about where shadows on the face/neck area should lie :>

I would also suggest picking out a wide range of artists that you like who produce art at a consistent level, and just stare at their art for hours and hours to see what it is about their art that you like, eg. observing how they colour skin; do they use saturated colours? do they add texture to the skin? how dramatic are the shadows on the face? how are the eyes/nose/mouth all placed on the face in relation to each other? do they use smooth or rough brushstrokes? I recommend a large variety of artists, because it's easy to become so captivated by one or two people's work that you just end up copying their style which is NOTT a good thing! >w<

To be honest I don't really like how it came out lately but it's ok.

As I looked at the "before" drawing I noticed the pretty pretty wrong anatomy, the head was too big for the body, the hand was too short & looked creepy, on the new one it's a bit better though, but not perfect. Haha I was too lazy on the bg on the new one XD

Well the "before" one was drawn back in April this year and the "after" one was drawn yesterday. ^-^
To be honest I don't really like how it came out lately but it's ok.
I'm not sure if I'm right but I think the anatomy changes ,coloring & face on the new one.

the thing about improvement in which everyone misunderstands is that practice isn't the only thing required. you need to be your own critique, and realize your own mistakes. this past year, i did not draw a lot. it game me more time, however, to relook at my old drawings and realize what was wrong. if it helps, draw something, take a day off, and see if you can point out anything that you didn't see before. yeah.

I redrew an old old old picture for my Vocaloid fanbook and so I wanted to put them side by side. I've already done this meme before, but it was more of a one year inprovement (2010-2011) thing. This is more of a comparsion from where I first started drawing to my ability as of the summer of last year.

One of my many complexes is that I started drawing seriously at the age of 14, pretty late compared to many artists; I mean I made pixels and webgraphics before then but I never really made a conscious effort to improve on drawing anatomy, perspective, composition etc.. I'm also not the best technical person so it took me a while to grasp a lot of these basic concepts lol. I get frustrated and give up easily on a lot of things but I'm glad I persisted with drawing.

There are still a lot of flaws even within the new ver of this pic buuut progress is progress and this is just a page in my history. I'll work hard from now on too!!

When I drew the top image, I was in the starting of an extremely long art block. That CG was a miracle in itself because I didn't (couldn't?) CG much in 2006.

From 2007 to 2011, I didn't draw anything of substance, besides a short-lived 2 month attempt in 2009 with 3 or 4 complete drawings. And even then, they were mostly studies because my creative juices were dry.

In 2012, I began drawing again. But internally I keep beating myself over the fact that I didn't draw for 4 years, and what progress I could have made if I had kept drawing those years. And I was always under the impression that I drew the same as I did 4 years ago (and then feeling even worse.)

And then I discovered this meme! I thought it'd be a perfect opportunity to see, once and for all, the changes in these 6 years because my ego was problems accepting that I didn't improve all those years.

HOWEVER, I don't think this comparison is all that fair because I didn't put a lot of effort into it when I drew the top image, and I spent quite some time on the bottom one. Also the 2 styles are different, and while the bottom is more ~detailed~ and all that, there is a certain charm in the 2006 version that I couldn't capture with the 2012 semi-realism drawing.

But in general, I think I can settle on the fact that I've made some sort of progress forward and now my ego can stfu and allow me to keep drawing in peace. So, mission accomplished?
