So this has been my sketchbook for the last week and a bit - utterly consumed by Doctor Bashir and Garak. There's more than this, but this is the better stuff that isn't covered in notes, and some of this is not great either. I'm still trying to settle into a good look for them, but there are some bits of this I like and I wanted to show people some of what I was doing while I was eerily silent. There are definitely some bits I really don't like, but they are attached to bits I really do, so you'll have to deal with some random wonky face here and my lazy ass colors here and there.

DS9: This is Garak

There were these "This is *character* " - meme sort of things going around for a while.
They were divided into three collums,
one "This is... He is not... he is not... he is not..."
one "He lives... He does not live... he does not live.... He does not live..."
and one "He loves... He does not love... He does not love... He does not love..."
@__@ you may be confused now.

I did a little something like that for Garak, minus the "He lives..." collumn. Couldn't think of enough places.
And the last one, well... Garak kinda DOES love everyone and everything.
A. Robinson once stated that he played Garak as being omnisexual (in Fangirl-jargon: "He isn't gay, he just doesn't care!"), but Paramount had issues... <____<''''
But in episode 3, when Garak is first introduced to the show and to Julian Bashir, IT'S SO F***ING OBVIOUS! Just watch it, it's hilarious! So I had to include that scene.

I don't know that any of these look less wonky than the last batch, but people seemed to enjoy the last batch so well that I thought maybe you'd like these too!

More snowy adventure, some vague sort of dressup/outfit swapping thing in which my conflicting reference photos made Garak's face nearly impossible and kind of wonky, and then just a random 'predatory with scarf' Garak scaring the daylights out of Bashir. Yay.

some of the "Awkward Adventures of Julian Bashir, Cardassia Edition' in which I imagine a string of obnoxious and hilarious things that could happen to poor Bashir should he end up on Cardassia with Garak. Hilarity ensues. This is something I'd like to do as an illustrated story thing. I get ideas down by making bullet lists and doodles. It's actually gotten ridiculously complicated.

Secondly - this is a christmas present for my best friend, who's recently become obsessed with Deep Space Nine. Something I'm quite pleased about considering that previously she was focussing on the new film or TOS.

Genderbend time!

Because there's too little of it anyway. I've read few short fics in this fandom. Wouldn't mind tons more though^^

I usually prefer kind of genderbend fic where one or both parties change sex and they're aware of it, and try to adjust in life after this major change. AU-fics where one/both have always been the opposite sex are also quite nice, but I think that sort of thing works better in other fandoms than Star Trek. I mean, gender doesn't feel like that much of a problem in Star Trek, and I honestly see more possible drama and hilarity when someone is forced to change, rather that being something for their whole lives. You know, female!Bashir would probably be just like male!Bashir, except for boobs.

Male forces into female body (or other way around) - that's the conflict for a great story.

In this little picture I implied Bashir to be Indian (just because I would find that pleasing) and put Garak in revealing dress, just because I felt like that's what *she* would do to grasp doctor's attention at first meeting. Or why do you think that *he* dressed like a watermelon the firts time they talked? Eye-cather, hell yeah!

Someone should definitely write a genderbend fic for me. I was thinking it would be incredibly fun to read one where Garak is the one who suddenly changes sex - just because those few I've read so far have been other way around.

Think about it, I bet that Garak wouldn't feel too much different, but god, Bashir would be so confused xD Perhaps Garak's sudden change makes Bashir realise for the first time he fancies the tailor, and eventually he comes to a conclusion that it didn't have much to do about his gender. Maybe he was just used to think himself as hetero womanizer and never noticed he had totally fallen for Garak^^

I have yet to get into the rest of Star Trek-lore but dropped in on a "Deep Space Nine" marathon at a friend's house.

This episode "Our Man Bashir" was hilarious. Dr. "Neurotic and Sexy" Bashir gets interrupted while fantasizing in the holodeck and his friend Garak interrupts the game by saying, "OMG! Human role-playing! I wanna join in!". Of course all hell breaks loose: this is Star Trek!

Of course when Garak says, "What can go wrong?" when they want to role-play James Bond, other people get stuck in the game as classic Bond characters: the villain, the henchman, the femme fatale, etc. Julian Bashir takes it all in stride because of course, he's 007...minus the Connery accent.

It's a fascinating study in human nature. We humans are the ultimate fan boys and fan girls.

ok I've finally given DS9 a proper chance I keep getting drawn into for different reasons, like if anyone from other series appears in it. and well now it seems the nerd gates have finally broken...you can just imagine how I feel right now, with an entire series to throw myself into. you just gotta be open for it, I guess! I'm still not at that point with Enterprise. DX but that's a different story...

I think I can safely blame Garak for dragging me into it. I just wanted to watch some scenes with him and Bashir because, well I don't ever need an excuse for gay subtext, do I? and cuz I'm liking Bashir more the more I see him. But fuck man I didn't realize how delicious Garak is. maybe it's because I have a serious thing for snakes, reptiles, gorgons, etc. They are seriously badass. And what I adore about Garak so far (still in early season 2!!) is that he's a complex dude. Like, probably a bad example, but take the Maquis. Each of them is their own person, have their own dark sides, etc., but I'd never believe Tom or B'Elanna could be capable of betraying anyone else on Voyager, or indirectly harming them for their own profit.

But I'm actually just waiting for Garak to do something bad. Or at least, it would totally be in his character. well, depending on what it is. I just love that he had a career and a life and his whole world was on Cardassia, so he's like a valid other view point in all this. And he still is every bit what he was, just with new stuff added on, due to his exile. You think he could imagine himself with a human friend before all this? And if he knew about Bashir's "secret", would he exploit it? he would in the past, but now? I like that I can't easily answer.

anyway, that's just how it seems to me now!

I'm a diehard Trekkie, but new to DS9, and hadn't even heard of that pairing before (the shame!!), but I'm really excited about it, not just for the adorableness, but the fact one of the pair is Cardassian. That just appeals to the nerd in me so hard!! I am so in love with aliens, robots, and non-human sentient creatures.

Doctor Julian Bashir and Elim Garak, from Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

They are very easily my favorite anything from that show, though I get so much joy from nearly every facet of DS9 that it's hard to say what is on the next rung down.

They're shown exchanging books and culture so often that I like the idea of them occasionally running into things that just don't translate, or things the translator took too literally, or things that someone native to the culture of origin would take for granted. Bashir is not likely to know what kind of animals are on Cardassia or what sort of attributes they have, and Garak is not likely to understand why a character in a novel is saying that they're not in Kansas anymore, etc etc. I know they seem to read these books alone for all the screen tells us, but I liked the idea of them reading together to be each other's cultural dictionary.

I was concerned about how bland Julian's side of this image would be if I were to put him in his uniform, but just as concerned that since it was my first time bothering to PAINT them rather than doodle them obsessively in my sketchbook, that I shouldn't toss him into civilian clothing just yet, especially because I didn't get the look of him as well as I had in the sketch. Solution came in the form of my beloved space backgrounds, which I decided to internalize on their clothing rather than slather all over the white space. I threw some salt on them and was pretty pleased with the effect.

Image fought me every step of the way, so at present, I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I wanted to post it!

orphan time round 2

So people asked for more of this and I may have vaguely promised more of it.

Again, sorry for the random color splashes, and some of the grey masses on people - the paper in this book is horrible and it seeps when I watercolor on it and erases poorly. I'm doing my best to just fill it as quickly as possible, haha. The color seepage on this is actually from the New Year's Bashir and Garak picture, though, so it's almost appropriate?

So as I said in the last one, I've got focus on the other kid this time. This is the Romulan/Cardassian hybrid with the serious issues.

First on the agenda here is just a continuation of the last doodle ('gonna catch Romulan AND DIE') from the previous set.

Then we get into damaged kid zone.

Damaged kid, as it turns out, I accidentally named after Garak's not-father from A Stitch in Time? When I was combining syllables to try to find something that sounded like a name, I landed on 'Tolan' and liked it, forgetting that it had been mentioned a glancing once, and totally out of context in the whole chapter and a half of that book I'd read. So now I need to decide if I can name this kid after the man responsible for most of Garak's awesome, especially when this kid's sister, Mira, has a name so close to Garak's mother's name. I've gotten really used to his name in the time it took me to realize I'd borrowed it and I don't know what else I'd call him! But there's the background on that, feel free to voice an opinion. For the sake of my sanity, I'm just going to use it for him for this hunk of commentary. Also, in the event you are interested in more background on these shenanigans, the comments on the last one have a conversation between me and a friend here on dA that turns into a giant spew on my part about how some of this orphan business goes down or was thought out.

AS FOR DOODLE TIME, next to the 'contagious' drawing is just an older head shot of this kid. The Romulan in him gives him the kind of creasing in his forehead, pointed ears, and a greenish-yellow tinge to his grey skin. He looks more Cardassian than Romulan, by far, but Cardassians would look at him and think something was off, which is totally demonstrated by Mira in the drawing below where she tells Bashir that Tolan's face is broken, and they should get her a different non-broken new sibling. This drawing is part of a series of 'break Bashir's heart' that I am apparently fixated on with regard to this kid, because that doodle, with Bashir saying 'there's nothing wrong with him' makes the one on the bottom of Tolan getting angry kind of very sad.

NOW THAT I'VE LED YOU ALL AROUND THIS PAPER, the remaining drawings are him and Garak, because I needed to do some of Garak with these kids that wasn't all >:[ I became really fond of the top one and decided to color it both because it was sweet and I thought it would be a good chance to show some skin color.

This was my reference [link] Just you know, felt like painting. This is really quite small painting, like the size of my hand, because I had canvas like that lying around. And I feel like playing with Elim Garak and Julian Bashir all the time <3

I'm not completely pleased with this, probably because I'm not really good at drawing or painting full bodies, not even from reference. I think that Garak came out quite fine, but Bashir is problematic. He looks a bit short, even though he was suposed to look just laid back. I think I have to think about this, somehow I feel like I should paint it over.

Funny enough, I'm not bothered about completele lack of perspective in the background. Don't ask how that sofa works, I have no idea. (Actually I do, but even if I did explain it, it wouldn't make any more sense) But I've always been prone to ignore realism when ever it comes handy to me. I tent to think backgrounds as ideas, more than anything real, really xD

And quite frankly, even if I could do perspective, I find it most of the time so bothersome I just don't care. I know. I'm a lazy bastard...

Episode with tuxes os of course "Our Man Bashir", which is a fool blood James Bond parody - and one of the best done holodect/suite episodes made in Star Trek general. Though, I still think that whole holodeck business all together if completely ridiculous. Why is it, for example, even possible to turn safeties off? What's the logic behind that?

I seriously think that if there were holosuites in real life, they would be considered too dangerous to use. Or put children in them.

And Garak just looks so goooood in tux <3 And so does Bashir naturally. But there's just something about Garak and his ability carry his figure. Delicious.

-So I lied about her being a *random* Cardassian orphan when I posted these before. I call her 'Mira' most of the time. I think it might be short for something. Julian looks weird in the top one~

-Some of the first interactions with Mira. I imagine Mira a bit like Lilo from Lilo and Stitch. She grows up to be pretty fierce and awesome, but as a kid, she's 'a bit dramatic.'

-More of some of the early interaction with Mira. This would be well before she's actually adopted. There's a story about what the worst thing ever is, but it's not small enough for a caption~

-Garak promises to make something for Cardassia Barbie, and Bashir asleep with the Romulan/Cardassian hybrid child who is kind of a psychological mess. I have a name for him, but it's ...tentative?

I decided maybe Julian should stop making out with aliens while on duty? So I've got some generic teal-colored thing for him to wear instead of his uniform, haha. Also thought maybe it was time that Garak look a little more genuinely pleased, rather than slightly predatory. Not that I don't enjoy him that way, but happy holiday what not and such.
