Leather armour and gorget

I can't believe it, finally it's done! YAY!
This took me ages!

It is part of a larger commission, including also a tunic, a cloak and a vanbrace.
Here there are: double belt, breast piece of the armour, and gorget.
The last one is linked to the breast piece with two straps on the front, because the cloak will go over the armour and under the gorget, so the straps must pass where it's open.

(Edit: ah, the big "spike" was agreed with the client! )

All this stuff is designed by me, piece by piece, starting from a sketch, then with a paper model, and finally made in 3mm thick leather. Hand cut.
6mm rivets/studs. A lot of time. Really. A lot.
According to my records, 58 hours.
Sometimes I think I'd better not to keep records of my work hours.
BUT, the good things are that:
- it's done
-I had LOTS of fun doing all these!

Instead of my usual goal of strict historical validity I decided to just make what the inspiration offered at the moment. This Gorget was a fun project for me as it is one of the only pieces of armour where I fulfilled my own personal creative desire. There are historical influences and it would probably be accepted as proper 16th century styling but is based on no particular original pieces.

A quickly made gorget from 2006. It's the first I made with integrated shoulder plates - they are too short to be called munions I think. Throat area is protected with a single rigid plate instead of articulated lames - I've changed that since but I don't have a picture of it in it's current state.
1.5mm mild steel for the front and back main plates, 1mm for the throat and shoulder plates, blackened with linseed oil.

Machined and hand-crafted, all brand-new materials consisting of:

Pure brass fittings with 32 thou (20 gauge) brass sheet detailing.
Heavy rivets are Monel MS20615.

Leather is 13 oz. vege-tan saddle grade.
Strapping is 4.5 oz. stone oiled leather.
All leather is waxed with in-house blend of armouring wax.
Lining is soft cotton with Evazote 50 foam insert (there are a few faint scuffs of shop dust on the white cotton, washable, sewn not glued)

This gorget is adjustable for a minimum of around ~15" neck to 20" neck.

Metal Gorget

This is a costume grade armor piece, made from aluminum. Decided that just having a spaulder wasn't enough, so I made a second one, and made this gorget to match. And as soon as my budget levels out, There will be a breastplate and back plate as well. And a helmet. And an "over pauldron" for the shield arm. And a gauntlet.

In other news, I like the hammered finish.

Soooo, I was coming to make a listing here but uh, it's sold already [>.< <3 =kawaiimon] so I'll just show it up because I'm rather happy with how it turned out D:

I've been calling it a phoenix gorget but really, I meant it to be a peacock -haha.

Hand tooled leather [with ye olde trusty awl and the back of a paint brush] -original design done freehand, then dyed in red and deep, chocolate brown.

I'd originally planned to make a pauldron with this design, but the style I'd planned for it didn't work with the way I was drawing the bird so I went for a gorget instead. I still plan to make that pauldron, I'll just have to come up with a different design because I don't want to repeat this again on such a small scale [the tail feathers - omg x__x]

As you can see in the shots above where I'm holding it, it's small - 2.5 inches across maybe? 3.5 at most, and only 1.5-2 or so high. The metal ends have 2 adjustable chains with dangly tear drops that jingle every time it moves [sounds so pretty and it was completely unintentional -lol]

I had a hard time giving this one up, but I'm really happy with where it's going. I expect lots of pics ;3;

The Combined Bevor-Gorget

This is the first piece if a new outfit I am building from scratch! I will have pictures of me in it when the whole thing is completed

I will be posting the pattern I designed, so you can build one if you want.

I wore this to a few events already, and I find it very comfortable so far. Its not super tight, but it does hug fairly close to the skin, so it takes a little adjustment to get used to.

The arrows pointing up indicate the top of the part. The arrows pointing to the side indicate the forward facing edge. The back can be zippered or corseted depending on your preference. I did a zipper on mine cuz I'm lazy and shiz.

These are the sewing lines, remember to leave a 1/2 inch or 1/4th inch overlap when cutting them out.

I'd love to see people run with this design, please let me know if you use it and if you have any feedback, thanks! I made this for me, but if other people like it, I will be glad to post more patterns in the future.

17th Century Gorget

I suppose I submitted this mainly because I was happy with the photography. Lighting can be very tricky when photographing shiny objects. The photo is a composite of 3 exposures having moved the lights between each photo to give a more diffused light. I still have a lot to learn but, thanks to Brian Hinton teaching me some Photoshop tips, this was one of the first armour pictures I had taken that came close to my goal.

I made my version wider around the jaw and shoulders. The bottom shot shows my entire costume with homemade longsword (for wearing at a local faire). My kid wanted us to match so I gave us similar arms.

The Gorget

This is an armored gorget I made for the purposes of an Inquisitor costume, but in this case I'm using it for a Commissar costume. It's made of cardboard, with a few bottle tops for those knobs at the bottom.

It's painted with black krylon spray paint, with a spritzing of silver krylon for a metallic look. The inscription and the Aquila were painted with acrylic silver and then detailed with black sharpie. Yes, I freehanded that Aquila. It was easier then it looks though, as I used a silver sharpie to erase any mistakes.

The inscription reads "Audaces Fortuna Juvat", or "Fortune favors the brave."

Not shown in this picture are foam pads to either side and a cardboard frame behind it, the whole piece is designed to fit under my vest and coat, thus beefing up my shoulders and holding the whole thing steady.

I finally got off my lazy bum and got back to work. Whooo!

Here's a new leather gorget I finished like 10 minutes ago. It's pretty cool. I mixed it up a bit with the silver and black contrast, and made the front to resemble old boot covers that knights used to wear. The name for which escapes my mind, and I'm too lazy to open a new tab. Haha.

Ok ,so this is the first piece officially finished for the lion armor. 98% of the parts are made and finished, just assembly is left.

First time making a gorget so I wanted to see how it turned out which is why its the first piece I assembled and I'm actually quite pleased with it. Feels and moves great even though its a bit small for me but will fit the owner perfectly I think.

FYI the color is orange in real life lol.

Ce projet appartien a "Mark" pour l'un de ses personnages post-apo d'un gn du Quebec, le gorgerin est entierement fait de cuir avec une patine métalique ternis.

Une technique de transfert d'image a été utilisé pour le pin-up dessiné par Bawidamann

Bientot le reste de l'armure sera affiché une fois terminé.

Dragoness Gorget - Here is the gorget that will compliment the female dragon armor set. Dragon head pauldrons will be attached to the tips. Slightly different design than the male version. Almost no rivets used inthe construction. More comfortable than mine as well.

I went and made a nifty gorget for my headless friend, ! It's a green-colored metal gorget with gold accents all around and gilded chains to bolster it down to her armor. On the neck is a garnet rose for added flair, which is also used to hook her cape onto. The inside the gorget is lined with a plushy material for comfort. It's meant to hold her head in place and allow her to take it off whenever she pleases.

Senatorial/Presidential Guard Gorget. The shield worn by the Guards of the Offices of the Republic: the selected soldiers protecting the Republic Senate, the Republic Parliament and the offices of the Chancellor, Prime Minister and the President.
Originally worn by a guards company of the army, the duties of protecting the Offices are now under the RSS charter.

The Republic has a bicameral legislative body, which is explained elsewhere.

When the Republic was formed, the Offices were guarded by a company of selected soldiers. As the Republic grew, the unit also grew, until it encompassed an entire division. At this point, the training also intensified and the division branched off to form the RSS, which also took on the mantle of the special forces that had existed before.

The soldiers on guard wear the dress uniform with their swords girt, a rifle slung on their back a vibro-bladed halberd on their hand, the gorget on their neck and a painted steel helmet on their head. Usually an armorfabric vest is worn under the uniform.

So Im going to start fighting in the SCA again, but unfortunately my Armor kit was the first Leather project I ever attempted...so its a bit cumbersome and well...noobish. Im in the process of designing a new armor kit but in the mean time I needed a new Gorget to practice with as the original one is..well ineffective (as you can see). The black one is just a temporary Gorget I threw together out of scraps to hold me over until I get more Armor leather and Copper Rivets in. The blue stuff on the old one is camping foam for padding...although I now know it was overkill, the new kit will not include such bulky additions.

Crafted out of 16oz Veg Tan Leather, 5 oz Oiled leather and Rivets.

Thoughts: Here is a protective gorgét or collar, clearly based on that of the jacket of Bartholomew Kuma. Their design was kept relatively simplistic due to the high wear this may receive over time.

Originally I'd planned for a design which incorporated more physical depth, and an actual zipper - but in observing it's thickness and other qualities, those would have proved to have too much interference.

As to the 'PX-36' included on it's back-plate (which is actually cuir bouili, boiled leather, causing it to harden to a plastic-like consistency), the number 36 has long been appealing to me for various reasons, and I'd decided on somewhat of a self-humorous gamble. While it's not known whether a canonical unit 36 actually exists, it may well be revealed in time - and just what that may happen to be may just as likely be amusing, interesting, stupid, unexpected, embarrassing, awesome, or awkward; I accept that . What I had actually intended to use was a code 128-B barcode for 'Peace,' but tooling or painting that onto the surface would have presented too much irregularity for the proper parallel forms of a barcode's rightful appearance.

The designs on the back of the plate are simple asemics, the central mark being an amalgamate of a certain set found interspersed amid my sketchbook, and the curving glyphs at the left and right stand for certain dynamics of consideration.

While not featuring the lower flange of a proper gorgét, this piece was not meant to be intrusive as to other garments worn along with it, and thus was kept deliberately minimal in structure. The work is meant as protective equipment for various informal sports or play, such as boffer combat - where any accidental strikes to the throat could be reason for concern. The actual purpose of this collar was as a neck guard for use during certain cycles of weightlifting - being an adherent to the pervasiveness and unexpectedness of Murphy's Law, this work provides some peace of mind. With no spotter no resting bar while lifting 80 lbs. of steel (or progressively more) above one's chest and neck, one tends to become a little self-conscious of what might happen were one to suffer a fault.

The secondary use of this is that it actually makes a surprisingly good neck warmer, and would provide something which the fierce -40 wind of this city could not cut through in the dead of Winter. Hidden beneath the collar of a parka, it would make a most welcome addition.

Details: A protective gorgét/collar meant for general use.

Materials: Oil-tanned black utility leather, vegetable-tanned tooling leather, section of hard PVC, black-plate rivets, waxed thread, Eco-flo leather dye, Eco-flo leather paint, and a nickel buckle.
