my hair.. put up in a version of a french braid... I payed a lady 100kr to do this to my hair at a mideavial fair.. took time and looks funny, like a sea shell. My hair is waist length, on me that's 70cm =27.5 inches.

I did not take this picture, my great friend Rebecca was the fotographer, I only take credit of the hair itself on this peice of art.

Well you asked for it. This is how I draw hair.

Of course I had to draw my favourite hair. Alas, I screwed up the portrait I used here, but the hair was still good, if a little unfinished, so I thought I'd put this together, because I don't fancy taking a pile of step-by-step scans again. >_>

I'm not very good at explaining stuff and I don't really draw in steps, I'm all over the drawing, just trying to make it look right, so this was a bit of a challenge. I apologise if it doesn't make any sense, because I should really be sleeping right now.

When it comes to hair, I don't usually follow the ref in detail (drawing every hair strand would be a bit insane, no?), I just mark the main hair chunks and follow their growing direction. Basically: draw some pencil lines, blend them, draw some highlights with an eraser, blend again and repeat. That's it. Oh, and having a very fine pencil helps a lot. 0.3 mechanical is brilliant for hair.

Anyway. I hope you find this useful.

( just note that variant light works really nicely on hair since its shiny and reflective, The variant/ reflective light is shown by the blue arrow and appears as a light-ish gray while the red arrow is the dominant light source, also keep in mind some times there is only one light source and sometimes there can be multiple ^^ just have fun and experiment)

note: this is a newer better-eddited version than the one people are using without my permission on their tumblrs, bebo profiles, myspace layouts and so forth. i pity them for them having a lack of originality. (i've had people tell me they actually owned the original drawing!)

Portraiture practise I used a refrence from the back of an old hair magazine. This is a few months old, I actually forgot all about it :S I remember being pretty proud of this one cause hair is pretty hard for me and it came out just how I wanted Probably because I enjoyed making it so much.

I don't know why anyone would want to know, but since a number of people have asked, here's a tutorial on how I cg hair = u = ;;

It's pretty self-explanatory and (at least I think) it's easy to follow.
You can pretty much follow the exact same process for photoshop though I prefer using SAI since the brushes are a lot easier *-*

A quick little tutorial - in a ginormous file - of how I draw hair. Included are four basic hair types, as I couldn't think of anything else that wasn't a mix or a derivative of these four. Thanks to `OchreJelly for suggesting Spiky. ^^

The general idea here is that hair can be painted without painting actual hairs, and instead focusing on the overall structure/shape and individual strands/locks/spikes rather than hairs. It's not intended to be the One Way to paint hair or anything like that, but it's my favorite approach, so maybe someone else will find it useful, too. If anything, it's just faster than trying to get every single hair just right.

Okay, shutting up now. Go, read the tut.

Photoshop tutorial of how I shade hair 8D;;; Uhm, this is just a guide though! More like a step-by-step. Sorry that it's so huge, lolol;;;

Also in some PS versions CTRL+G won't turn your layers into a clipping mask, but make a group. So some may have to push CTRL+ALT+G in order to make the layer into a clipping mask.

...Yes it's actually permanently this colour in real life, one of the perks of being an artist

No, I'm not some kind of crazed attention seeking devil worshiper because I sport blue hair XD Some people think they should have bigger boobs or a smaller nose a flatter tummy. I think I should have blue hair, have done ever since I thought about hair...
So I first put blue hair mascara in my hair at Christmas when I was 12, at 15 I permanently dyed blue streaks in my hair, Its been blue in one way or another mostly since then. Over two years ago I took the plunge and dyed it all over permanently blue~! Walking around I get random compliments on it a lot more than I expected, no negative ones yet, though its not uncommon for someone in a car to shout 'Oi bluey!' out the window I'm sure if you were to look around hard enough you could uncover a photo of me, but I'll let you do the hard work! XD

Technically this is the flipped version of me... the one I see in the mirror. You could only really tell by my birthmark, and the fact I mostly have freckles on one side of my face (strange I know)

I submitted this earlier today but I needed to work on it a little more so now Im posting it again.

Thank you everyone for all the comments and favs on my last tutorial. You guys made me so happy and gave me so much inspiration. ^__^

I also wanted to say Im really sorry if I disappointed anyone with making a tutorial on just bangs. I had 150+ requests for a tutorial on hair and I originally planned on putting curly hair, spikes, buns, Braids (French braids), Bangs, Long hair, Short Hair, Pigtails, Ponytails, Ofuku (Geisha), and Odango in this tutorial. But as you can see I only got to bangs. XD So I must ask everyone, would you like me to continue making another hair tutorial or move on to something else?

If you buy a print it would mean the world to me. Please check the prices I made them quite cheap. Buying a print of my tutorial would encourage me to make more and maybe even take it a step farther. But I know what its like to not be able to afford things so here is the printer friendly version. [link]

"Good hair" usually means "straight hair", I know. But dammit, I love curly afro hair.

I know, I know, as a white woman I should shut my big mouth because natural afro hair is a bitch to work with, but I've felt like that ever since I was a child and watched a children's show called "Bullerfnis" [link] and I though the woman was the most beautiful thing ever, hair included.

Than a few years later her and her friend appeared in a children's movie as two cops, and she wore a straight wig [link] and I was all "Why did they make her less pretty? :C"
Only many years later did I realize that they made her more of a stereotypical tough black chick, and him a stereotypical whimpy white guy who was in love with her.
