"Hongi" is the Maori tradition of a greeting where two people press noses and breathe in. It's an ancient ritual where the two exchange "ha", the breath of life. When hongi is done with a visitor, they are no longer a visitor. Instead they become one with the people.

My version here called for me to change the boy in the original photo to a young Samoan boy. My client is Samoan and his girlfriend Maori. This is a gift for her. He had asked for a painting of kids so I thought why not paint a Maori tradition that a Samoan boy is performing. So here we have the Maori girl initiating the Samoan boy into her people in the act of Hongi. I like the boy's expression; he sort of has a "I'd only do this for you" type of face as if he finds the tradition silly but loves the girl enough to take part in it.

If you know any Polynesians, you also know we like to tease each other about the other culture' traditions. But behind the jokes, there is a deep respect and appreciation for them all. We as a Polynesian people are connected in many ways: different, but the same.

A hongi is a traditional Māori greeting in New Zealand. It is done by pressing one's nose and forehead (at the same time) to another person at an encounter.

one of my all time favourite is the maori ritual known as +hongi+ [traditional 'kiss' or nose-rubbing greeting]. it brings an element of peace, and makes the tapu void. everyone becomes one big family after that.

Arthur's and Annabelle's relationship: In my head-cannon, Annabelle and Arthur would start out being a little awkward with each other, as Annabelle would be wary of foreigners after what happened with Abel Tasman and Arthur would be trying to do better with his new colony. I imagine Arthur would take it slow but the two of them would soon warm up to each other and Annabelle would feel as sense of loyalty, love, devotion and affection towards Arthur, despite little mishaps. I think would have a more familial love for Arthur with maybe a bit of romantic love. Whereas, I think Arthur would really appreciate Annabelle's loyalty and have a lot of affection and familial love for her. I also think it's likely he'll have some romantic love for her.

The other colonies: In my head-cannon, all of Arthur's colonies and former colonies are guys except for the obvious exception of Annabelle.

This is the final one, and it's only I realise that I made Annabelle look kind of sluty...oh well, she's too oblivous to notice that.

Explanations:

Ivan's and Annabelle's relationship: In my head-cannon, Annabelle and Ivan would have a pretty complex relationship. Ivan would feel a strange fondness for Annabelle which would grow into a strange kind of affection for her. Annabelle would just feel a sense of loyalty and pity for Ivan, as she thinks he's just missunderstodd and she would try to connect with him, which would probably send out the wrong signals to Ivan and he would probably feel possesive and even a little attracted to Annabelle, in a kind of strange twisted sense. Annabelle would most likely not notice this and her pity would grow into missplaced affection which would lead to kind actions such as the one in the fic. Ivan may have romantic, albeit slightly twisted, feelings for Annabelle while Annabelle would just feel pitying affection and loyalty. Like I said, complex.

The Scarf:: During the Boer War, Queen Victoria knitted scarves for the men who served in the war as a kind of medal. Queen Victoria was New Zealand's first monarch and was very beloved I can imagine Annabelle getting a scarf from her and wearing it to honour her and her memory. It's black because its the first colour that came to mind.

Hes only been in the world a couple days and already hes making friends. ^^ Here he is sharing a traditional Maori greeting with Cassidy Powler.

The story with these two is fairly straightforward but warm-fuzzy. They met at a surfing contest in Australia, and they tied for first place, got to hanging out, bein bros and whatnot. After Hermes left Australia he never got to surf again and it was another 8 years before he ever saw Cassidy, having been assigned to train under him to be a proper Mann Co. Sniper.

The earthquakes: Christchurch, a major city in the South Island, had a huge earthquake last year and this year. Japan sent helpers to help with finding survivors and bodies. When Japan was affected, we sent helpers too. And you want to know something funny? The day the earthquake hit Japan, was the day the helpers from Japan were setting out to go home.

Explanations:

Jack's and Annabelle's relationship: In my head-cannon, Annabelle and Jack have a really good realtionship. There is a strong sense of loyalty and devotion between the two of them, which stems from past experiences with each other. There would be a strong sense of familial love between the two of them. I think out of all of the other nations, Annabelle would be most likely to have a romantic realtionship and have romantic feelings for Jack, which would most likely be returned. Although, Heracles, Matthew and Ludwig would all be pretty likely too.

Gallipoli: In WWI the ANZAC soldiers landed in Gallipoli in Turkey to fight the Turks. The fighting lasted about 8-9 months and ultimately the ANZACs were defeated. Many soldiers died, not just from the Turks, but also from poor health due to staying in the trenches. Gallipoli is now called Anzac Cove, in honour of the ANZAC soldiers.

The insults: I think that Jack and Annabelle would often exchange playful insults. 'Sheepshager' is a common nickname for New Zealanders due to the large population of sheep in New Zealand, there is more sheep than people here. 'Rooscrewer' is a reference to all of the kangaroos in Australia. 'Crochumper' is a reference to Jack's love of wrestling crocodiles, which often looks like he's humping them. 'Moa hunter' is a reference to how all the Maori people hunted the giant moa bird to extinction. 'Convict' is a reference to how Australia was once used by England to hold convicts that couldn't stay in the overflowing prisons in England. And 'Daddy's girl' is a reference to Annabelle's devotion to Arthur.

Canada had freed The Netherlands from Germany in May 1945 and was the first country in the Americas to legalize same-sex marriage, New Zealand has also legalized same-sex marriage.

Francis's and Annabelle's relationship: In my head-cannon, Annabelle and Francis would have a kind of uncle-niece relationship. The French arrived in New Zealand in the 1600s and settled in the South Island in a little town that is now called Akoroa. After The Rainbow Warrior Incident, neither country said much to each other, out of guilt on Francis's part and out of anger and despair on Annabelle's part, although their relationship soon got better, I still think that incident weighs heavily on those two. I think Annabelle would have s familial love for Francis but she treads lightly around him and she doesn't trust him as much as she once did. I think Francis sees her as a niece and he still feels guilty about The Rainbow Warrior Incident. Not guilty enough to not grope her though of course.

The Rainbow Warrior Incident: The Rainbow Warrior was a boat Greenpeace used to peacefully protest against nuclear testing in the pacific. Unfortunately, two French spies got onto The Rainbow Warrior and blew it up, killing a Dutch photographer who was documenting the trip in the process. The French president did apologize but it's considered 'embarrassing' by the French.

Hongi – the unique and very sacred Maori physical embrace wherein the two sides become one. “The hongi is the traditional greeting of nose pressing. It is the exchange of the ha, or breath of life… This greeting makes the visitor at one with the tangata whenua [hosts]”18. “The most sacred part of the Maori is this portion here – the face and head. When you make contact with a fellow human, it’s the embracing, the light touching of the noses. Because you’re now dealing with the most sacred part of the person. In the UAE, men greet each other by pressing noses, which we call "Khshoom" or "Khashmek" (literally meaning "noses" or "your nose"). This greeting is only carried out by males.
Greetings such as this are also part of the Maori tradition (New Zealand) which is called 'Hongi'.

The first meeting: When Abel Tasman, the first European to discover New Zealand, landed on new Zealand, he had a rather violent confrontation with the Maori people. The Maori people ended up killing a few members of his crew. Neither Abel nor Annabelle had forgotten this and gets rather awkward whenever someone mentions it.

Alfred's and Annabelle's relationship: In my head-cannon, Annabelle and Alfred would have a pretty weird relationship. There would be a sense of familial loyalty and love between them but also I think some tension from the ANZUS Treaty. But I imagine there would still be respect and even some friendship between them. Not sure about the romantic love though.

The ANZUS Treaty: The ANZUS Treaty was a treaty formed by Australia, New Zealand and America, declaring alliance between the three countries. However, in 1984 anti-nuclear feeling was growing in New Zealand and in 1985 New Zealand's then Prime Minister David Lange declared New Zealand nuclear free and barred boats carrying nuclear weapons in New Zealand harbors, this caused much tension between New Zealand and America. America declared that it would be suspending its treaty obligations to New Zealand until its boats, which carried nuclear weapons, were allowed in New Zealand harbors. Although David Lange didn't pull out of the treaty, many members of the American government called this an 'act of betrayal' and said that 'New Zealand was a friend but not an ally'.

The Europeans searched many years in vain before finally finding the legendary Spice Islands in the late l5th century. Before that, their aromatic treasure, which was worth its weight in gold in l5th and 16th century Europe, was only obtainable through trade with Arab coasters.
Many European rulers dreamed of possessing these islands and the power and wealth that would come with them.

Monopoly of the spice trade by VOC

Until round 1800, cloves, mace and nutmeg could only be found on the Moluccas, a group of islands now part of Indonesia and formerly called Spice Islands. Spices have many uses: as medicine, for seasoning food and drinks, and as perfume. Cloves were supposed to be a remedy for loss of memory and toothache, mace for seasickness and rashes. Still, the volume of trade in spices remained small as only the happy few were able to afford such a luxury. In view of the limited potential of the market, the only possibility for merchants to earn much money was to control the transport to Europe. As from 1500, the Portuguese succeeded in doing so. Around 1660 the monopoly came into the hands of the VOC and the English complained that it was impossible to move one single clove without Dutch authorization.

Governor-General Jan Pietersz. Coen (1587-1629) and many others as well used brute force in order to secure monopoly of the spice trade on the Moluccas and get rid of the English competition. The population of Banda was ruthlessly enslaved and even deported. The VOC had clove trees belonging to adversaries uprooted and villages burnt down. Hong expeditions were military tours of inspection by a fleet of armed praus the word hongi originates from the island of Ternate in the Moluccas and means armada. At least ten years are needed before cloves can be harvested from a young tree. So, the inhabitants lost their livelihood and were left no choice but to move away or die of starvation.
