We created this aprty dress cake for a cake contest sponsored by the Somerset Art Association. The “Let Them Eat Cake” contest’s theme was the celebration of spring. We created the “Bloom of the Ball” which was a nature inspired party dress adorned with sugar roses, vines, and leaves hanging on a dress form.

The cake was a sour cream orange zest cake filled with pistachio and white chocolate buttercream. It was a really great experience creating this 46″ tall cake, although its transportation to Bedminister Fiddler Elbow’s country club was a little daunting…not to mention our air brush machine overheated and blew out every fuse in our store the night before! This forced us to hand paint the cake…but it all worked out in the end.

My second cake using fondant, made 1 month after the first. It was a birthday surprise for my sister's 18th birthday. The rice is made from rice krispies covered in white chocolate.
It's still one of my favorite cakes.

This was a spontaneous collaboration with SpookiePookie, created for our father's (read: SpookiePookie and I are sisters) birthday.
Our father doesn't actually *like* sushi, but what the hey, that's not the point. The point is, we made sushi out of jelly candies, and we made it for him.
What more could you want from your offspring?

Base is homemade cake. Sashimi etc. is squished/mangled/reformed jelly citrus slices. Nori is rolled out black gummy something or other...I don't remember what. (It is *not* Scandinavian salty licorice. It was, after, meant to be eaten.) Rice is coconut shavings, chopsticks are chopsticks.

Results: nothing. I cant belive the winner was decided through how high the pics were rated... I mean... It was possible to give multiple votes for yourself and rate down others. :<
Size: the tray ⌀30cm, height to horns 19cm
Time: ~68 hours during 2 weeks + 4 hours on the barely noticable clock drawing on the tray
Ingredients:
~600g gingerbread
~200g caramel candy
~300g glaze
+crushed peanuts and chocolate sprinkles
eyes are made of crushed blue M&M's

Honestly... I feel a bit guilty for having to compete in the 11-18 year old category... D: I mean... The things what a 11 year old and 18 year old make isnt that... Comparable. :/

Yeaa.... So THIS is what Ive been keeping myself busy with for the last two weeks.

Wanted to make sth different from all the regular over-glazed ginger houses.

Basically, this is made out of lil ginger cubes and sticked together with *lotsandlotsandlots* of CARAMEL! + filled with cocoa glaze. First made it in three bigger parts and then connected them together with *hellofalotmore* caramel. Thats why the body is so... square-ish. :I

Mmm~ The decorating part was my favorite~ Can you tell? :D

The cake, sadly, did not explode, though it was definitely something I would love to have tried!

They're 100% edible, but maybe it would seem a bit crazy eating little edible versions of them.

You guys. It's done. It's finally done. *collapses into a heap*

As stated in the WIP, this is for 's "Link's Blacklist: The Zelda Tribute". It's an art collab featuring 60 artists, each of whom creates fan art from Zelda. But the really cool and different thing about the project is that it's enemies only. The standard is amazing and you guys should go see it and love it and tell the artists how amazing they are. Now. I can't draw for nuts, so I turned to a medium I'm a bit more advanced in. This turned out to be the most ambitious, stressful, ridiculous cake I've ever done. I've gone into detail on the blog about half of the crap that went wrong with this cake, so I won't bore you with it.

Tech details: The cake + topper stands a total of just under 30cm high, and the Furnix topper has a wingspan of 24cm. Cake is butter cake that begins red at the base and gradually progresses to yellow at the top. Layered and covered with buttercream and then fondant ruffles. The Furnix topper is predominantly fondant. I used a wire frame to support the structure. All of the feathers on the cake were individually cut. I have no idea how long it took me all up, but for the topper alone it was about 5 full days of work. Not counting making the wire frame and repairing all the breakages, colouring the fondant, etc.

Lawd, this was a marathon. This cake took every ounce of patience I posses. I nearly gave up thrice. There are A LOT of things I'm not happy with and would like to have done better, but by the end I just wanted it to be over. I've used time I should have spent working on my thesis and will probably regret that. So. Yeah. Not perfect. But it'll do for now.

Panda and Hearts Bento

My mother bought me a lovely traditional style bento and I have been dying to give it a test. I finally got enough spare time and a good enough excuse today. Since I don't get to make bento as often as I used to, I wanted to make this one super special. And nothing says special like a panda. ^o^

Another version....

Final image for the 3rd and final in a How To series for Dessert Professional Magazine that hits the shelves any day.

All elements in the glass centerpiece are edible.

If you follow me, you'll recognize some of the components from earlier deviations I've posted.

All hand-sculpted and painted.
Lotus flower and lilly pad are wafer paper painted with Cocoa Butter and are completely free-floating.
Frog is sculpted from fondant, gum paste and royal icing painted with Cocoa Butter.
Fish are reverse-painted with Cocoa Butter on the inside of the glass.
"Pebbles" are edible molecular gastronomy caviar.

Now that Series 1 on Wafer Paper is done and to the presses, I've started Series 2.

My second commission!! Also, my second Dorm Cake: some lovely ladies lent me their kitchen for the baking, and after some serious scrubbing and disinfecting, the decorating was done in my room.

It was also my first spherical cake, and as always, a Learning Moment...fortunately, the fondant figures came out pretty well and those were the important feature!

I couldn't resist adding some extra dimension for DAT SCARF because it's my favorite random thing. Had to add the nori detail for the eyes because the orange food color wasn't showing up and he looked super creepy :/ All in all I'm not sure if I did him perfect justice but good enough for now

Edit: HOLY FRIGGIN AGNI. This was such an amazing and overwhelming surprise!! I will definitely work on responding to everyone but let me just give a big THANK YOU to you all!

I made this cake for the 2011 Iowa state fair. It is based off the Monster Book of Monsters from Harry Potter. The mouth and tongue are made out of modeling chocolate, the tentacles are made out of brown fondant.

Result: 1st place in single tier category

A TARDIS MADE OF CAKE? HELL YEAH.
I helped make this cake for my little cousin's Doctor Who themed birthday. By the time this picture was taken, it had sagged a little, but it was so fun to make and tasted delicious.
It stood about a foot tall (ish), and yeah, the light at the top was an actual light.
Most (98%) of the credit should go to my aunt, I just put it together while she was busy with the rest of the decoration/cooking. Here's a picture of me making it: [link]

Going to her house to help make lunch for a friend's surprise birthday party. (And when I say 'help out' I mean 'sit at the counter and look up Cat Macros pictures' ). Anyway, she was making these gorgeous little scrambled-egg onigiri. I took one look at them and asked if I could make little nori faces for them. Complete with shoujo effects!

The rest is history.

So, I just wanted to say thank you for all your kind words, I really appreciate them!

The cake was made for a friend of mine for her mum (or mum in law?). They took the cake to a restaurant and brought it out with candles in it and she thought that her daughter had bought her a new bag Apparently she screamed the restaurant down when she found out it was a cake

It is 2 x 12" square 1 1/2" deep sponge cakes cut into ever decreasing rectangles, stacked, carved to the shape, covered with chocolate buttercream and covered with Renshaws chocolate sugarpaste to represent a Louis Vuitton hand bag.

To get the leathery look, The chocolate sugarpaste can be pulled around a little to get the creases you get in a back, plus I pleated it at the side bases, then you can polish it with a ball of the sugarpaste to get the sheen.

The details are painted on by hand (I got a picture off my friend and copied that) using Squires Kitchen edible gold lustre dust mixed with bronze lustre dust and diluted with isopropyl alcohol (or you can use gin or vodka).

The handles are made from Regalice sugarpaste with Gum Tragacanth added. I used a patchwork wheel to get the stitches effects and just modelled the rest by hand.

The badges were also pieces of regalice paste cut to shape and I scribed the logo in with a needle. The zip and padlock were just hand modelled. They were then painted with the same colours as the details.

I bet it was a nightmare to cut, cos it was about a foot tall and just over a foot and a half long, but my friend wanted to have good impact rather than having a small cake.

(Please do not use this image on other cake Companies websites. - sorry, have to say that, I get a lot of problems in the UK of people passing off my work as their own. sorry )

I started making cakes 12 years ago when I saw an awful cake in the supermarket and wondered if I could do better. Then friends asked me to make cakes and soon I had to set up properly.

I was self taught from books for the first 4 or 5 years, I also attended the Brtish Sugarcraft Guild for inspiration, then the local college asked me to teach, so for two years, I went to evening classes and studied beginners sugar flowers and cake decorating to get the certificates.

It took a long time to get accepted as most good cake decorators are taught in culinary schools and have really good food backgrounds. I studied as a musician really, and never thought I would be a cake decorator by trade.

I am a demonstrator for the British Sugarcraft Guild and also write occasional articles and teach at the exhibition for Squires Kitchen Sugarcraft. This year I am teaching two classes of chocolate craft (an experiment, the college hasn't run one of those before ) and Level one and Level two sugarcraft/sugarflowers and novelty cakes.

I hope that answers all the questions, I couldn't believe the amount of messages etc this morning, then when I found out it was a Daily Deviation I practially screamed my shop down

This was my first-ever competition entry - done for 2013 That Takes The Cake (Austin, TX).
Awarded Best of Division: Professional

Free-standing isomalt walls with reverse-painted goldfish (in colored cocoa butter) with airbrush accents. Wafer paper and colored cocoa butter water lilly. Isomalt "lampwork" pebbles. (Largest wall is approx 16"x18") Products: Chef Rubber colored cocoa butter, airbrush colors, lusters and cooked isomalt. Cake Play isomalt. Grex Airbrush.

YAY I you Edward Elric. I decided aaaages ago that he would be on my cake this year. I freaking designed it about two weeks ago, and I've been waiting to just do the damn cake. That was the only bit of my birthday I was particularly interested in.

Anyway. Edward Elric, in chocolate, for my pleasure. Done using the same techniques as in my tutorial. Managed to screw up his right eye, but hey.

Is is freakin' 16 now. *headdesk* And I have homework to get on with too.

Wrote more of my fanfic, which now has a title: Telepathy (so I nicked the title from my new fave song, so what?)
Had a little party tea, but it wasn't anything at all special. Didn't want much special.
Had cake. Still have all of him left over.
Watched Shrek the Third with my family.
Went to bed.

It was very nice.

Majora's Mask Cake

This is a cake I've been wanting to do forever but only recently had time to do it. If you don't recognise it immediately, this is Majora's Mask from the game of the same namesake.

This was definitely a bit of a challenge. By far, the hardest part of the cake to achieve was symmetry. Using a floppy, sticky substance that dries quickly in the air, stretches when lifted and cracks if manipulated too long means you need to work fast. Fast and accuracy aren't best friends. My sister scoffed as I complained about the imperfections. But you gotta strive for perfect, right?

Well, it isn't perfect. But overall, I'm uncharacteristically pleased by the final result. The last few cakes I've done I've started to feel like I'm the boss of the fondant, rather than it controlling me. We understand each other now and so it's not this stressful battle of wills. The result is an ability to create things I wouldn't have dreamed of doing a year ago. There's lots here that could be improved, of course. But it's a work in progress and I, finally, am able to see progression.

Inspired by Japanese Tattoo designs.

This three tier cake has been brush embroidered for the water effect with bas relief Koi fish, finished with line work piping and simple blossoms.

This cake was on the Table of Honour at the 23rd Annual Squires Kitchen International Exhibition March 2009
