Harley Quinn

If you follow me on Facebook you may have seen me posting here and there about a Harley Quinn image that I've been TRYING to get out the door and here it finally is.

I was a bit torn with this piece at first and I must have done six to eight different layouts trying to get what I wanted out of it. I'm definitely a fan of the Batman animated series Harley, but I REALLY like the look of the Arkham City video game Harley. The catch with Arkham City Harley is that, with all due respect, she has little personality and zero expression in comparison to the bat-shit-crazy animated series Harley--a character trait that I think really defines the character. I just couldn't get myself to draw the stone faced Harley depicted in the game so I thought I'd try my best to mash the two very different versions of the character together and see what comes out.

Things looked pretty good to me when I was done with the pencils, but I have to admit that I did not foresee how expressive and energetic Ula's colors would make this. Once again I have to tip my hat to her for her making my pencils pale in comparison to the fully rendered color version.

It's the Sally the Squirrel and Amy Rose Variety Hour YAAAAAAAY!

It always bugged me that, while Amy and Sally are supposed to be friends -- heck, Amy's super friendly in the comics (unless you mess with them or Sonic -- then she gets hyper-violent) -- there aren't many pictures of them interacting or having fun or bein' girly and junk. They're teammates. Ones a tomboy and the others a girly girl but darnit they get along and that's that! So this was my attempt to do that and add some symmetry via key moments from the comics/games.

So here we go. The very first set of off panels that I drew for Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comics.

It's interesting seeing the pencils side by side with the finished product. Gary Martin did the inks on this (I didn't start doing my own inks on the strips until much later).

My favorite is probably the Tails Doll one for obvious reasons. For whatever reason, the lettering was not inked in on these and, after begging and pleading and sobbing like a baby, the sound effects for the Tails Doll strips were added back in graciously by Aleah. If you're not familiar with Tails Doll and why he makes that "SCHLURPY" sound effect all the time then obviously you never hung around one of my old favorite haunts: the GHZ.

It was quite the Sonic site with cool peoples whom I still chat with on and off to this day. If any are reading this, hey guys. My only regret is a noticable lack of Drano Cookies... HINDSIGHT!

Batch #3! At this point I was getting tired of the lettering I was spending time drawing being dropped out, so as you can see, I simply went and did it myself. I think Amy's grin was toned down for the final printing of Strip #2 also. I don't have the books on hand to see.

Although Gary Martin was credited with inking all 4 strips in the books, I actually went back and re-drew the inks for the very last one, "Team Freedom's Arsenal," myself (it was too late to change the credits in-house so oh well no big). As a result, I think that one's probably my favorite of the batch because IMO it came out just right. I didn't actually ink the BG of Big's panel BTW. I drew the squiggly bits in using one of those old school china marker pencils.

AoSTH cameos are all around in #4. I'm so happy with what Aleah did for those crayon colors in Big's panel to match the china marker. It's hilarious. Also, check out the pastels for Amy's strip. Great right? I love Aleah's stuff, y'all. I really do.

Also, kudos to anyone old enough to remember Burma Shave signs.

The third batch of Off Panels I drew for Archie Comic's Sonic Universe. This time for the "Secret Freedom Fighters" storyarc starring SEGA's Babylon Rogues. Again, it's interesting seeing the pencils side by side with the finished product, but this time there's a few things of note. While Gary Martin did the inks on the first two strips, I went back and re-drew the inks for the last two strips (uncredited in the books): "Handsome Naugus" and "Who's Dead Last".

We'll get to Handsome Naugus in a bit.

The first strip is why I'd requested to try my hand at doing the inks myself for the OP's because I felt like a lot of details in the pencils were getting lost in transition and it wasn't fair to Aleah to try to decipher stuff. I dunno if its just because I'm nitpicky or whatever, but I was already inking the lettering so it wouldn't get dropped out so I guess in my head that made sense? Anyway, that first one was VERY visual as you can see, requiring you to follow the path of Shard's arms as they destroyed the Strip #1 --

-- which leads directly into Larry fixing the "Under Construction Off Panel" in Strip #2. CONTINUITY!!!

Strip #3, "Handsome Naugus" might be my favorite OP of all time simply because I didn't intend for him to be half-naked. I didn't even know if I was gonna get away with drawing that cuz Ian never actually noted clothing in the script. Aleah colored it that way cuz that's how it looked, but really I was only drawing really form fitting clothes on him. Hence the laced sleeve at the end of his arm. Somehow, that miscolor managed to make it in, and IMHO, make it a zillion times funnier. So there ya go. LOL! (Also, yes -- the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the script was "Handsome Squidward". I couldn't resist.)

Strip #4 was me trying to experiment with layout in a more extreme sense from Strip #3 since that one was very text heavy. I concentrated everything on the bottom and I think it worked minus one thing I didn't catch. ...I forgot to draw the white parts of Eggman's boots. Oh well. Can't win 'em all. I did love drawing Cubot and Orbot and, yes, Silver and Shard being there was a direct callback to Strip #2. Again, CONTINUITY!!!

The first set of Off Panels I drew for Archie Comic's Sonic Universe. This time for the "Babylon Rising" storyarc starring SEGA's Babylon Rogues. Also, again, for whatever bizarre reasoning the lettering wasn't inked in on these and I remember being really sad about that considering the third one is by far my favorite (and also stands as the most infamous of the bunch). Now you can see what it ORIGINALLY looked like before it wound up being censored to death! (Seriously. If you have the issue go and pull it out. What was printed was actually much different than what's shown here.)

In all seriousness, I really do hate that the lettering was missed on that first panel. I was trying to go for one of those old boxing promotional posters and feel like everything got completely lost in context and the penciled product IMO reads much clearer. Oh well, cest la vie.

Also, I will never apologize for Mama Robotnik in a bikini with a treasure trail. I WILL NEVER APOLOGIZE AT ALL--BARF.

The fourth batch of Off Panels I drew for Archie Comic's Sonic the Hedgehog is my favorite batch, to date, artistically. I really took the time to play around with the layouts of these as much as possible to try and make them unconventional and interesting to look at. My favorite layout is probably the Olympic rings one. I remember playing around with that one a lot as - originally - Mama Robotnik and Bivalve weren't in Ian's script. (i is a sneaky debbils)

I'm also very partial to the 1st one with creepy Naugus-Possesed Geoffrey. That last panel is ripped right out of "Dogs Playing Poker." lol.

Unfortunately, I don't remember what I did with my pencils (I might have forgotten to scan them -_-). Anyway, these strips are the point where I began to pencil and ink everything myself so its probably a moot deal. Also, Aleah really knocked these out of the park IMO.

This was the first real Chaotix adventure (just them with no hangers-on or lookee-loos) the book has ever had which made this a fun excursion! I didn't really play with the layouts on this batch as much as I had for its accompanying Sonic the Hedgehog OP's. These I kept simpler out of necessity.

The first strip is actually a replacement. You can view what would have been the original OP here. For those wondering about the "After Young" reference, I'm referring to Chic Young, the original artist on the newspaper strip Blondie. If you didn't catch it, Vector's pose is a straight-up unapologetic riff on Dagwood Bumstead.

Strip #2, I did not have time to make proper edits to. So that seamless fixer-upper is all Aleah and IMHO she did great.

Strip #3 is simple enough until you look at that last panel...and then go STRAIGHT DOWN into Strip #4. Best thing is, I don't think anyone who saw it in print ever made the connection. Which is hilarious. Hehehehe. My only regret is that I drew Beauregard wrong and never even realized it. Oh well.

TT #150 (Excerpt): 'The Bigger Bang Theory'

Uploading only a select few of the old Time Trouble strips because I know some people wanted to see them (and these are the only ones I'm happy showing).

TT#150 was long.

Really long.

Really, really long.

It took me weeks to finish mostly due to these final panels (and it and CNW 150 are probably what finally led to me burning myself out and stopping altogether once I got my very first professional job doing the Sonic the Hedgehog comics for Archie). Anyway, I'm only uploading these bottom panels, not the above panels that led into this sequence. This was pretty much the culmination of everything that had happened during the Generation Zero portion of the storyline -- basically, the gigantic magical mushroom cloud in the final battle with Corporeal Abyss. That's what happens when you mix your magics -- especially to that degree.

It's not without its faults (lienne. what is your body doing? stop it.) but I was really proud of this sequence mostly because it was one of the few strips that looked EXACTLY 1:1 as I'd imagined it in my head. No shortcuts. That and the time I spent on it. Oh my Lord. Coloring is not my forte, gang -- but goodness knows I worked my butt of playing with this one to try and get it just right.

If I could do it all over again I would. Heck, I am.

Just, differently this time. You'll see.
