Urban Champions: Superman VS Son Goku

yeah, this has kinda been an overused subject here in DA but I figured I'd give it my usual Urbanized touch.

the designs are slightly different from the one's I had for them on my "Urban Justice" and "Urban Saiyans" pieces.

doesn't really matter to me who wins in this fight, but its pretty symbolic in a West VS East kind of way, and as for the pose, very much inspired from those usual flying kick glamour poses in movies and comicbooks, not very original really.
I originally planned for this simply to be a kick pose, and I added the heat vision/ki effect at the last minute.

next on my urban series would be "Urban Nickelodeon". watch out for it XD

Hey, It's a match many people want to see, and has been done in multiple fanarts. I wanted to do something original with that, so i went with an western comic book cover style for it. Well, I ain't no Jim Lee, but I think the parts I did do are quite well done.

Originally I made Goku barefeet. Guess I kinda had Ryu in my noggin at the time. You may also notice other small, naggly details wrong on Goku(insignia, armlets). But I am an American artist, so I changed al that on purpose, uh, yeah...*

The Debate: Superman in Dragon Ball Z

The most current East vs. West debate in comic book culture is assessing the role that Superman would play in the Dragon Ball universe. It is difficult to decide on an answer since the Dragon Ball characters increase in power so frequently and exhibit flight, super speed, strength, invulnerability, and energy projection. The argument is further complicated by the fact that there are multiple incarnations of Superman in the time since his creation. This is my assessment of how the classic versions of Superman would fit into the Dragon Ball Z storyline.

I decided to leave it all here in this rant. After this I won't comment further, bring this up intentionally again and leave it be! I don't want to hear another word about this subject and I don't care if so and so made a video, I won't watch it or comment futher!

Sometimes life finds a way of shiting on you. If it's something like you lost your wife in a car accident then you have my complete sympathy towards you.... yet if your favourite anime character died in a fan made fight then all I can say is get over yourself!

Todays rant is about the DBZ fans raging about Goku Vs. Superman. Saying things like "Oh Goku would have done this or that!" in terms of how the fight went. Or saying "He shouldn't have SS4!!" among other equally stupid forms of butthurt fanboy rage!

They fielded this kind of complaint before in the second Q&A video.

I get it people; Goku is a VERY popular character. Yet you need to realise something here. The fights themselves are not based on how much you love a character. Let's say for example you had a fight between AVGN and Mike Tyson. Tyson would win if you calculated the stats etc. I don't care how many AVGN T-shirts or DVDs you have; he'd probably lose the fight! This is the point everyone seems to be missing here.

Not to mention both Superman and Goku are INCREDIBLY OVERRATED!! Yes both are kind of the faces of Comics and Manga, yet sometimes being popular does NOT equal winner. Batman lost to Spider-Man because his greatest tactics are stealth and the shadows. Not very effective against a Spider Sense. Or perhaps Kratos losing to Spawn when the science in Spawn's character works to there advantage against Kratos. Or perhaps Mario losing to Sonic due to Sonic's natural speed!

You see what I'm saying? Goku lost, not because of bias or the like. If you stack the numbers, abilities, stats etc. Goku or any DBZ character for that matter wouldn't really last long against Superman! Another reason why Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe didn't work. Nice idea mind you but deeply flawed in execution!

Don't get this twisted I'm not a huge fan of either character (More of a Vegeta Batman fan) and couldn't give a shit if they had the fight or not. I got 30 minutes of entertainment and facts. Plus they did work hard on this for you guys!!

Lesson learned, never give people what they want!

However these arguments are amusing to look at so let's refute or debunk some of them shall we? Also before we get started, I want to make this clear. I am a Dragonball Z fan!!! I'm not so much a Superman fan but enough talk... have at you fanboys!!

Argument #1 "Goku should have got help from King Kai"
This is the easiest to refute. Cus one of the Death Battle rules states "No outside help" meaning no King Kai, Kami, Popo, Vegeta etc. If you allow outside help for Goku that means Supes can have help too. In the same regard with Batman Vs. Spider-Man, Bats didn't have Oracle or Alfred feeding him advice.

Oh just so I don't have to repeat myself. That goes for Vegeto/Gogeta as well. Fusions still count as outside help!

Argument #2 "Goku is faster because of Instant Transmission!"
I think everyone has pointed this out till they've gone blue in the face. Instant Transmission is nothing more than glorified teleportation. Thus teleportation does not equal speed! In the same manner that the Dellorian from Back to the Future when it time travels. It's not going to the future/past at super sonic speeds. It's an instantaneous travel to the chosen target. Superman's speeds have been documented as well as Goku's and the fact of the matter is teleporting isn't speed!

Argument #3 "Goku should have used Instant Transmission to send Superman to a red star"
For people who claim to be DBZ fans they don't really understand the rules the Manga/anime creates. It states on the DBZ Wiki that Goku uses Instant Transmission "by concentrating on a particular individual's ki signature" and of all things Wikipedia clearly states that Ki "is the central underlying principle in traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts" and Ki literally means "Life Energy"

This is why pitting American super heroes against Japanese Manga heroes doesn't work. For their own rules and laws don't mix or gel together. Goku and his friends gain there amazing powers from this system where Superman himself doesn't generate Ki but instead his power and feats come from his connection to the Sun. Making that statement about Goku "Sensing him" at the beginning kind of stupid when the fight clearly shows he can't as Superman hits him with a car! See also that they couldn't sense the Androids in the beginnings of the Cell saga.

But let's put this argument to rest. Ki is generated from all living things yet stars don't have a life force to speak of. Yes they're burning balls of gas but no real life energy for him to focus on and send Superman to. Plus if he had bothered to stand there all day, trying to concentrate on finding a Red Star... Superman wouldn't wait around for him to finish!

Argument #4 "Why'd they use the Modern Superman?"
You'd prefer the pre crisis Superman? The most broken fictional character in living memory? Be my guest if that's what you want! Again, to save time. They suggest using other versions of either Goku or Superman. You could use Baby Goku, Future Goku, Disco Goku, Evil Goku from a parrell universe with a goatee. It doesn't change anything!

Argument #5 "He didn't need that Sensu Bean after being hit against the wall"
Do you even know what pressure points are? Here, quickly read this to better understand this alien concept you've never herd of [link]

If I was to strike certain parts of your body, you'd be left feeling paralysed or immobile! The Sensu bean was to relieve him of the nerve pain. Which in essence what happened to him. Goku got off lightly from that if you ask me. Now if he'd been fighting Kenshiro he would be fucked in the same way if not worse.... and he's a Japanese Manga hero as well!

Argument #6 "His power level makes him stronger"
No it doesn't! This is something DBZ itself tried to point out once they stopped bothering to have scouters or near the end of The Cell Saga. Having a high power level doesn't make you stronger. Vegeta believed he could become a Super Saiyan by simply getting stronger and stronger. Yet in the end that theory was put to rest! Broly had a higher power level and he lost.... 3 times infact!

Cell was at levels high above the Z Warriors and he lost to Gohan. Again, also consider that in DBZ they usually face an opponent like Cell and Frieza once! Superman fights numerous villains on a constant basis who employ new strategies or ways to kill Superman. Forcing The Man of Steel to change routine... speaking of which.

Argument #7 "They made Goku look like an idiot!"
Actually, I thought he was spot on in terms of personality. The main area of complaint comes from Goku launching Superman into the sun. Think how many times has Goku done to other fighters? Brolly? Cooler? Baby? Goku was just running off of his instincts, in the same manner he shattered the kryptonite because he wanted to fight Superman at his best. See also Frieza and, to a lesser extent, Vegeta wanted Cell and Majin Buu at their best too! Saiyans pride themselves on fighting and nothing else. He may have looked "stupid" in terms of not knowing about Superman's biology but it applies to the "no prepare time" they gave Spider-Man and Batman.

Goku's strategies, instincts and attacks had no effect on Supes. Firing a Solar Flare at Superman or the Solar charged Kamiehamieha was a death sentence! Both are powered by the sun.... and guess what gives Superman his power?

That's the same kind of derp moment when Thor hit Ironman with a bolt of lightning in The Avengers movie!

Argument #8 "They let Superman win cus he's AMERICAN!!!"
Okay at this point, people are just grasping at straws! Yes Superman is an American comic book hero, but his creators are both Jewish and is based on the Übermensch. Which is a concept in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche! So the correct thing to say is "They let Superman win because he's an American created by Jewish Immigrants using theories of a dead German philosopher!!"

However if you're going to take this argument... please don't!

I was confused with the outcome at first. Mainly because I don't read the comics that much and only started reading the New 52. My basic understanding of Superman comes from TV shows. Not the comics and when they showed half the shit he can do.... Yeah Superman could probably annihilate Goku without even trying! Then again, if the fight had a different outcome and Goku did win, then I guess the DC fans would be up in tizzy as well!

Perhaps if they both lost in that explosion then that would shut everyone up!

If you honestly believe the fight is "rigged" or you believe "they trolled you" (I'm getting tired of that argument) then do the math and calculations yourself and tell us what results you get. Yet don't be surprised if the results come out the same!

Yet the bottom line about all of it comes to this.

A fictional character killed another fictional character in a fan made fight. Not indorsed by either company and won't affect either continuity. A fight neither DC Comics or Shonen Jump give two steaming shits about, and they care even less about you having text book hissy fits on the internet!

Besides, Popeye would kill them both

For a friend of mine. Something that was very enjoyable, but mixing anime and my own style proved challenging. I wanted to have goku fit into my style as much as possible, but having it still look like goku, without actually drawing it exactly like goku was too difficult, so in the end I just drew it how he looked in the cartoon.
