The first time I had my portfolio reviewed for a college, I was a sophomore in high school, and I showed up with a 9 x 12 portfolio full of pencil drawings, mainly of characters standing around. Getting into colleges had me so worried, but if I knew then what I know now about art school I wouldn’t have been even a little worried, despite my awful work.

It's not that hard to get into art school except the best ones, so give it a shot. ]]>

Portfolio Day is a series of events spread over the country where art college representatives gather. Potential college bound hopefuls go to these events to get their portfolios critiqued. You can also compare and contrast various colleges and get a general idea of which ones you want to apply for.

It’s finished! Yay!

As usual I would love to hear what you all think of this story. Here are my thoughts:

I wish people would wait till the end of the story before accusing me of things like “ignoring criticisms.” While I don’t mind fan speculation on the contents of my stories, I do mind when those speculations turn into violent accusations and people get pissy with me not realizing I had planned a storyline twist all along.

I’m not particularly happy with the artistry of this story. I felt it was a bit looser and not as refined as the Cleo story. Part of that has to do with the fact I’m working overtime on several important projects all at once and SYAC was kinda low on the list. Still, there are a lot more wonky artwork in this story and I feel bad about that. I’ll try to do better for the next story.

I liked the interaction with Tenko and Carl. I think if I ever do another story with them I won’t jump too much farther into the future. I want to spend time with Tenko while he’s still struggling before he goes off to college. I think I’ve successfully been able to transform Carl into a real character and I’d like to learn more about his story...

I’ve personally been to several portfolio days long before I was thinking about going to college. Like Tenko, my parents felt it would be a good idea for me to start early. I remember it always being rather unpleasant and boring, but not much else.

I mentioned this before but this storyline was not meant to be a “how to” guide, though some people seemed to think it was. Tenko’s portfolio is not at all how you should approach an actual portfolio day.

When building a portfolio it is important to include a variety of work to show that you are willing to learn. The professionals there want to see figure drawing studies, still life, life drawings, as well as more abstract things like cartoons and comics (only if you’re going into that field). Basically, show as many different talents as you possibly can, and make sure to pick pieces you feel exemplify your specific interests.

New SYAC strips will be going up again in a few days. I gotta get caught up on some of my other projects first. Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing what everyone has to say about this storyline.

I've always been amazed at how much people on the internet love to discourage positive feedback. It seems the general perception is that being negative is more "real" and "honest" while being positive only goes to encourage bad behavior and give the artist a big ego.

However, that's not how I learned to critique in art college and from my point of view if you only ever point out the bad stuff and never the good, it's very hard for the artist to know what they are doing RIGHT. Too much negativity can be just as detrimental to an artist's growth as too much positivity. The best forms of constructive criticism (and the ones I listen to the most) are ones which both point out the bad AND the good in a thoughtful, respectful, and non threatening manner.

This does not mean I want feedback which is only praises, rose-colored, and never points out the bad stuff. Far from it. But it certainly couldn't hurt to hear what I'm occasionally doing RIGHT instead of what I'm ALWAYS doing wrong. You dig?

The definitions for various forms of criticism! YAY!

Constructive criticism:
“Constructive criticism aims to show that the intent or purpose of something is better served by an alternative approach. In this case, the target of criticism is not necessarily deemed wrong, and its purpose is respected; rather, it is claimed that the same goal could be better achieved via a different route. Both negative and constructive criticism have their appropriate uses, but often it is considered a requirement of criticism that they are combined. Thus, it is often considered that those who find fault with something should also offer an option for putting it right.”

Negative criticism:
“Negative criticism means voicing an objection to something only with the purpose of showing that it is simply wrong, false, mistaken, nonsensical, objectionable, disreputable or evil. Negative criticism is also often interpreted as an attack against a person.”

Hypercriticism:
“Hypercriticism is a feature of certain personality types and is colloquially known as nitpicking or nagging. Nitpicking is minute, trivial, unnecessary, and unjustified criticism or faultfinding. Nagging is scolding, complaining, or constantly finding fault.”

This is a pretty weak cover, but I rushed it out to help motivate myself. I haven’t had a lot of pressure to get any art done recently and I find that I work best under pressure. By posting this seemingly poor cover art I now know I MUST have the rest of my story finished on time to meet the uploading deadlines. So sorry for the crappy cover, it’s helping me get work done.

For this portfolio I'm doing animated versions of DC characters. One thing I've learned over the last year or so is to always just design something flat out and then pull back to make it animateable. Trying to work at an animated level from the start makes things mind-numbing. ]]>
