I really enjoyed the "old comic" look that Jason Martin did for his Molotov piece, so I decided to give it a shot with my Venture Bros #1: Brock Samson mock comic book cover.

This piece started as a tribute to one of the greatest comic book artists of any generation, Jim Steranko, whose famous cover to Marvel’s Hulk King-Size Annual #1 (1968) is the inspiration for this piece.

This is also a tribute to The Venture Bros., the incredibly well-written, hilarious cartoon from Adult Swim and Comedy Central. If you haven’t watched it before, you’re really missing out!

BROCK: After the twist, you'll feel a snap and the body goes ragdoll on you.
HANK: And that will knock him out... even more?
BROCK: That will kill him.
HANK: Do I have to?
BROCK: Alright, fine crybaby. Tie him up and, I guess, gag him. But at the first sign of trouble I want you to at least break both his knees.

Considering how popular this image has become, I decided it was time to update it with my new skillz. Here is a list of the changes, if you are interested:

PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION BEFORE BITCHING OR WHATSOEVER.

THAT IS the original pic from Elvgren:

This picture is half digital and traditionnal painting.
For this one I wanted to go back for the kind of technics I used for all my "dark tower" pictures, meaning :mix of traditionnal textures, medias, photos, digital tricks, mix of elements...

What I DID:

1-Basically, I took the original pic, gave it more contrast and erased the background and the face, heels and some other parts.

2-Then I printed it as a greyscaled pic.

3- I did the drawing appart, on a watercolor paper through a lightbox (YES, you can beat me for that if you want)to keep the pose as closer as possible to her original model.
Fixed her face to keep Zatanna looking the way I generally try to portrait her.
Addes the other hand, I wanted the cigar feeling pose, but with the magical stick

4-Once it was done I mostly colored it with watercolors markers and colored pencils.
I textured a bit the background with thick white acylics,

5-When it was Ok I scanned back the greyscaled print and my marker version ; then I mixed both on photoshop to have something very close to what you see actually.
it helps achieving the same textures (see the "chair" for example" and oil feeling) and shads.
Note that I followed the original shads too when I made my version. Otherwise it would have not worked that well.

6- Added the stars on photoshop; what ties her heels to her leg (dunno how you call theses) are actuually an edited photo

7- Fixed all the colors, added some original elements of the original painting to help even more to sounds like the original.

8- Here we are!

Then YES, I DIDN'T Painted the whole thing by my own hands,I also don't really own an original picture...
Then if you tell me "it's an edited copy of a GIL ELVGREN 's painting , I guess it will means you didn't READ this description.
You can see this pic as a photomontage except it's more of a"picture montage" actually.

Don't ask me for print of this pic then.

For people re-linking it on tumblr or whatsoever, give me a favor and don't forget to add GIL ELVGREN to the credits. I can't pretend beeing the owner of the whole pic.

This time I thought of adding more shadows and lights with photoshop to add more depth to it all. The hardest part was maintaining the whole textured feel of the felt pens while adding a painting like illumination to the drawing. Hope you like it! And next time expect something entirely new!

Hye folks !

So ... yeah; before some of you tell me that I've stollen one of Adam Hughes' ideas, I'll just answer by one link:

Then YEAH, he did a parody of the "saturday evening post"
Now My turn.
I'm on my "vintage trip" actually so I though I might give this thing a try.

Never drew Phantom lady before, and HELL if I'm happy with the result!!
I even had a short time of hesitation, adding the last textures to the pic because It kill all the smooth and clean colors I achieved on her... But I also needed the textures to give to this pic its vintage feeling !

Not that much to say in other way...
Interesting alternative character to Powergirl if you're into "chest area" .
Also interesting of you want curves, and nearly no straight lines to ink.
VERY cool character if you're into pin-up stuff...Just google for her and you'll understand that she clearly belongs to this category.

I 've chosen the clothes that "covered" her the most ; meaning the one Daniel Acuna gave to her in his run.
I guess her most popular remains the Yellow "vampirella outfit" she used to wear, but it was kinda boring , and I liked Acuna's one A LOT.

As always, if you find some mistakes in my english sentences, tell me about them !!

CLASSIC STAR TREK 1

Comic Book Cover, Star Trek. DC Comics. Brush and ink. It was my intent to move the Star Trek comics away from the standardized comic-book look, and more toward the movie poster, bookjacket design style. Though this meant portraying far less dynamic action, I felt they would stand out more as designed art. Plus, it made Paramount happy. lol Nuff said.

* I must acknowledge the works of the late, great artist, Robert Peake as a major influence in the style and design direction of this illustration. His art for the Star Trek feature film one-sheet posters remain an inspiration.

Oh! I need to relate this story!
I was so late on this cover that my editor reassigned it right from under me with no notification. The problem for me was that I was sick and tired of inkers butchering my pencil art. The technique I was now using to render the realistic likenesses of the Trek crew was very delicate cross-hatch texture, and the last straw was when an inker (who I shall not name) just scratched ink all over one of my pieces, and used a dead line-screen for the rest. I was LIVID! I promised myself I would NEVER let that happen again, especially not with THIS cover, my first chance to illustrate the vintage Trek crew in all their television glory! So I mustered up the courage to ink my own work. THIS-- represents the very first time my own inked work was ever published, and I'm very proud of it.

I sent it in late, and didn't hear from my editor at all. Days went by, and I finally called him. He was blasé. He said that the cover was fine, and that although he had commissioned another, he was replacing that one with mine. THANKS for telling me! They gave me a standard cover rate. My editor had also sent a pay voucher through without my knowledge OR signature.

But the bottom line for me was that I had proven to myself that I could do it. I have never looked back. I've inked virtually all my own work since, and have gone on to ink and be requested to ink other artists. Ironically, this cover was the "bottom line" for DC's Star Trek as well. Their license had expired with this issue, and it wasn't to be renewed until years later. Paramount had not had the best relationship with DC Comics, and they didn't appreciate the addition of all-new characters, and the drastic dip in story quality and art.
When things started up again, I was informed that Paramount wanted certain assurances from DC, and my participation was one of them. I was deeply honored. And the rest is history! LOL!

This one's idea all we said was a business woman who's a bit thicker and has big boobs, ahhh, what a fun assignment that was.

On the coloring, I tried ALOT of different things the past few days, with giving it shading (realistic, cartoony, and even abstract textured ones.) but nothing appealed to me as much as this flat version. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong but I'm still growing as an artist.

The banquet hall was arranged in a manner akin to an old battlefield, tables laid out facing each other like warring battalions jockeying for position yet unwilling to be flanked. For all the tuxedos and pearls, Rolexes and evening gowns, the tension in the air was more fitting for a boxing ring than a ballroom. The impeccably-dressed and -groomed vintners were gathered around their tables, each with a single bottle of their offerings for the year and a pair of glasses sitting in the middle of an arrangement of flowers and cloth, the centerpiece freshly cut and trimmed within hours at most. The representative from each table eyed each other warily as they waited, the only thing they looked at more than each other being the ornate gold-paneled oak doors, a powder keg wrapped in Armani silk.

When the latch turned, each person spun towards it, snapping to attention like a platoon of overly-dressed soldiers as a short brown-haired man with a small lacquered box under one arm entered, turning on his heel and holding the door open to let the Connoisseur enter. Her bespectacled assistant stared straight ahead as she stepped into the room, her purple heels barely making a sound as she glided into the room, her Shan Tung silk dress swishing as she took slow, measured steps up to the assembled tables, her shoulder-length blonde hair bobbing slightly with each step, kept out of her face by a jeweled hairband over her crown and a pair of inlaid ivory hairpins in the back.

"So," The Connoisseur said, her eyes tracing around the room once, "Who is first?"

This was a common tactic of hers, trying to get each team of representatives to show their hand and betray their eagerness. Every vineyard wanted to be first, of course, to get their wine to the Connoisseur's palate first before she'd been influenced by any of the other vintages, but to simply come out and say so would betray weakness. The trick was to volunteer yourself, and fast, without looking like you were attempting to do so.

It was the squeaky pop of a cork that drew the Connoisseur's attention, an eyebrow rising as she looked over to the first table, her nostril flaring nearly imperceptibly as she breathed in. Ignoring the thinly-veiled glares from the other tables, the Connoisseur approached as the representative poured two glasses of their wine into the crystal Bordeaux glasses at their table, corking the bottle and stepping aside, sweating into his collar as he tried to maintain his calm veneer.

"So, let's see what our favorite Napa vineyard has to say..." She started as she cupped the bottom of the glass between her middle and ring fingers, tilting it to critically examine the color and consistency as she lightly swirled the liquid around, the heat from her hand warming the red wine. She gave a tiny nod and raised the glass to her face, swirling it more vigorously and taking a slow, steady breath in through her nose.

"Hmm..." She started, the second representative holding a pad of paper and a gold fountain pen at the ready to record her every word.

"In the glass, aromas of crushed red berries, anise.... and sandalwood." She brought the glass to her lips, taking a sip of the wine into her mouth, her eyes closing as she pursed her lips and pulled a breath in over the wine. She opened her eyes, tilted her head up, and swallowed the wine. That was another reason why it was advantageous to go first; in flagrant defiance of tradition the Connoisseur never expectorated, and accordingly she only rated ten wines at each tasting, so as to not imbibe enough to alter her judgements.
"Crushed fruit on the nose leads into great flavors of dark fruit and spice that pairs well with meats, Mediterranean food, savory pasta dishes, and world class cheeses. I would say... six point seven-five of ten." She turned to her assistant, who had just finished tasting his own glass. "Don't you agree?"

"Indeed," he nodded, setting his glass back down on the table. As far as anyone knew, that was the entirety of the assistant's opinions during testings, but she insisted he always have a glass just the same.

As the Connoisseur set her glass down, a slight grumble could be heard in the ballroom. The Napa representative tried to keep his eves on his pad as he wrote down her words, but he couldn't keep his gaze from wandering to her stomach as her dress began to bulge out, looking in matter of seconds as though she were several months pregnant. Everyone in the room saw, but knew better than to make even the briefest of mentions of the Connoisseur's 'condition'. It was unknown why her body reacted in such a way, but it was one of the surest indicators of her approval.

The assistant, seeing the growth had stopped, took the lacquered box out from under his arm and opened it towards the Connoisseur. The biscuits couched in velvet were specially-made for her, each oblong wafer costing more than a three-course meal at the Ritz and scientifically engineered to have no taste whatsoever, a magic eraser for the taste buds that absorbed all the tannin and alcohol out of her mouth.

She turned and looked at the other tables as she chewed, stepping over to a weathered but elegant-looking woman with close-cropped dark hair, already popping her bottle's cork and filing the two small-mouthed wine glasses with their vintage.

"Ah, another white from our friends at Monferrato," She said as she pinched the stem of the glass and held it up, comparing the color against the well-lit white walls of the ballroom. She once again brought the small-mouthed crystal glass to her nose and inhaled deeply, the sound of her inhalation followed by the subtle crack of stitching being pulled taut as her breasts swelled several cup sizes, the neckline of her gown stretching from modest to revealing as the line of her cleavage deepened, her larger breasts contained- for now- in a smaller space than they needed. The Monferrato representative remained stone-faced, but her eyes flashed hope at the encouraging sign.
"Mmm," She mused, swirling the contents of her glass. "The nose hints at tropical, for only a moment, before citrus zest, butter, rocks and minerals fill the senses," She said, smiling a bit before taking her sip and repeating the ritual. "On the palate, I found a floral expression with citrus and herbs," She finished as she took her biscuit, "with a pleasant if short-lived aftertaste. Seven point two of ten, don't you think so?"

"Indeed," her assistant repeated as he closed the lacquered box and followed her to the Reims table.

"Ooh, A Rose' Champagne," She said as the pinkish liquid collected in the champagne flutes. She repeated the exacting rituals of judging the color against the white walls, smelling the effervescent aroma, tasting the wine, and swallowing it, offering her evaluations along the way. When her assistant offered her the lacquered box of biscuits, she reached for one, but hesitated, parting her lips just slightly and taking another slow breath through them.

"Hmm... With the surprisingly long, clean aftertaste, hinting of licorice, tarragon, and thick-set honey, I would revise my prior assessment from seven point one-five to seven point two," She said, finally taking the biscuit and putting it in her mouth as her rear and hips seemed to sway farther and farther out from her sides with every step, the fabric around her midriff now looking- and sounding- quite taut.

The Shandong Red was the one to finally tear her dress, the sweet aftertaste flaring her hips enough to cause a seam to pop, a sharp oval of pink flesh showing through the purple silk.

The Monticello Chardonnay's full-bodied flavor filled her body, taking the formerly lithe critic from looking several months pregnant to several months overdue with triplets, the surging belly widening the split along her thigh and pulling her neckline from revealing to scandalous, but of course no one said a word. The Connoisseur was far too absorbed in her senses, in the careful judgement of each flavor and texture, to notice te scandalous swelling of her body, and every other person there was either too used to it or too terrified of the Connoisseur's disapproval to bring it up, so the tasting continued as normal even as the silk gown became more and more revealing with every sip.

The aroma of the Chilean wine from Casablanca Valley was apparently very good, as it was enough to earn the representative an eight point three and the first tear in her bodice, the silk separating over her now head-sized left breast just under the stitched neckline.

The Rheinhessen Pinot Noir was not only had a full body and a thick, fruity taste, it lingered quite pleasantly, swelling her rear enough to run the split down to her knee and her belly enough to surpass any conceivable notion of pregnancy, the round expanse of her stomach pulling her dress farther down and separating the neckline even further from the dress, the left side skewing bizarrely across her chest as it attempted to provide desperately-needed slack to the right side.

The Russian dessert wine made from Rkatsiteli grapes surged to the lead as surely as it surged the Connoisseur's waistline, a new tear starting just over where her navel would be at a normal size and racing down the front, splitting the hem of the dress as her belly approached beachball size.

The Romanian White from Dealu Mare had an aroma that made the Connoisseur want to refrain from drinking it and an aftertaste that made her feel as though she'd never stopped, earning the wine a nearly unprecedented eight point eight seven five and the Connoisseur another slit in her dress, both sides now ripped open due to her fantastic girth and turning her gown into something more akin to a Chinese dress, the front and back of the skirt completely separated below the torso.

And yet, even as she waddled to the final table, one hand resting on her distended belly- no, pinned was the better word, sandwiched as it was between that and her now watermelon-sized breasts- she paid no heed to any of it, the same stone-faced professional look an her face as she moved to the last table.

"I don't believe I recognize this vintage," She said as she approached, hardly able to see the bottle on the table over the expanse of her barely-contained breasts and full, firm belly. "...Sussex?" She asked, squinting. "Well, far be it for me to dismiss a new and untested vineyard- if you've made it this far you must be doing something right," She finished as she accepted the sparkling wine from the representative.

After grading the color, she brought the glass to her nose, her eyebrows shooting up at the first sniff. "Amazing!" She said, her breasts already beginning to swell as she took another sniff. "Layers of well-delineated aromatics emerge over time, melding seamlessly into a chiseled, precise core of fruit, showing quite a bit of depth and richness, all while maintaining superb freshness and clarity," she said, her right breast completely filling and then overflowing her torn neckline, the seam pulled nearly diagonally across her chest as her left breast continued to pull fabric from her back and midriff in order to contain the jiggling, billowing sphere, a tear providing a slanted window of her bosoms across her entire chest, up and over her bosoms, all the way to her shoulder.

She sipped the wine, forced to make an effort not to quaff it by the wonderful flavor. "A quiet, persistent, thrillingly precise wine with fruit that manages to be vivid and supple," She started, her belly already swelling further out under her resting hand. "The fruit presence submerges into the delicate fortitude of the tannin, reemerging with bass notes of wildflowers and high notes of rose." She took a great breath in through her mouth, the inhalation causing the already-strained garment attempting to contain and cover her swelling body to release a few more protestant snaps and pops.

"A fresh but lingering bouquet, followed by warmer notes of wheat and dried cereals. Powerful and vinous in the mouth, the wine develops a fleshy texture underpinned by a firm backbone promising a long life," she said, her rear swelling three times wider than her shoulders, flesh rippling down her thighs and backside until only her feet remained reasonably human-sized as her legs grew in wave after wave.

"Mmm, yes..." She started, looking at the glass she was forced to hold to her side, so dominated by flesh had her front become.
"Definitely the best in show tonight at a nine point four five." She turned and set the glass down on the table, barely missing knocking it over from her newly-acquired girth. "No, thank you," She said, holding a hand up to her assistant as he offered her the lacquered box of biscuits. "I think I'd like to let this one linger... at least until I can order a case of my own." So saying, she turned and headed for the door, her assistant striding ahead to open the door as far as he could to allow her enormously expanded silhouette through. I'm trying as hard as I could to stretch my style (thanks to a certain Dreamworks film that came out a while ago) and I thought Sourtongue was the perfect experimental item to use for this considering he's a pretty explosive and.... face-ish guy.

I gave Sourtongue his other eye but made the pupil purple and a tad bigger (and up close, rather spiral-shaped) as a result of the accident that murdered him and sent him to Heaven's basement and Hell's attic (and Earth's sewer). He could tear that eye out and use it as a flashlight, a recorder, and it could become a projector and make him find certain folks, no matter where they are.

Colours by myself, 2099.

Just a warmup between pages. I'm really drawn to that vintage/retro style of lineart at the mo... very clean and crsip, with wide open spaces, gives me more of a challenge in some respects. I tried to keep the rendering quite minimal on this as the lines were so solid, but push the colourholds more (like that old Colossus piece from ages back!)... felt more illustratory/graphical at times.

I left the BG completely apart from some gradients and the textures, all the focus is on Ivy.

Pretty pleased with how it turned out, love the softness and the vintage feel.

Its out in the solicits so here it is in the og form, they went with a white burst light version for the actual cover I prefer the vintage texture as the rest are done in the same way.

This was the first piece I got handed to me on the gig, so you'll notice they get tighter as I get used to them more. Pencils/inks by Robert Atkins (check his gallery for goodies), colours by me I'll be posting some pages soon too (well, when the issue lands of course, which is the 18th of May supposedly so put that in your diary)

I think this one came out really well and is definitely moving toward a coloring style I like. She might not look as similar to the girl he drew but that's because I didn't wait for him to finish to make mine. We just said a naked girl with flowy short hair and a snake cleverly hiding the naughty bits.

I see her as a sort of erotic snake charmer who'd be in a circus...a dirty one. lol

I got the textured brush from [link] which looked pretty cool, I'll have to try more like this.

haha, in all seriousness though XD This is probably the first time I've drawn him (like officially, not just a little sketch) since... Drawing for Animators class 0_0 (about a year ago...)
I thought I'd add alittle twist to it too This is him making his first successful article of clothing, which is what he wears all the time now Lol, he's so skinny he needs to use a coat wrack for his mannequin. I hope you like it!!

Vintage Copy of StarCraft 2

This was made to mimic the feel of old paperback book covers and apply it to an abstract medium - the computer game. I chose a game that isn't even out yet, so calling it a "classic" makes it that much more ironic.

I saw this done a long time ago and thought it was really cool. Then I saw a TF2 variation on this today and I thought "I wanna try my hand at this." I didn't really change the template design at all, but the design of the marine fighting all of the zerglings is my design 100%. The layout of the book is not, nor is this idea... but it was so cool that I couldn't help but parody the parody

Made in Illustrator using a paper texture set over the piece and set on "Overlay." For the guy with the gun I used mostly just round rectangles and ovals to make him - it gives him a smooth and clean look; he is really just made up of a bunch of basic shapes. The creatures surrounding him and leaping out at him was made with the pen tool.

Daaaw, look how young and innocent he was. His dream of becoming a woodsman still intact....

In my one story from Sleepy Willow Grove, Taylor came from a long line of tailors... a VERY... LONG... LINE... OF TAILORS.... so when his dad saw he wanted to be something else, he just laughed and said, "Get the tape measure! HALAWLLAWLLAWL"
Aaaaaand, being miserable in his apprenticeship and everntually his job as a tailor, he... became crazy.... and..... does what he does.... today.
Parents, never stiffle your children's dreams. They might become crazy child hating tailors XD

I am havin' a hay day with these "screen caps". And.... oh my god I'm drawing backgrounds finally? My own backgrounds wow... well, except for the rug there.... that's just a left over texture from my Senior Thesis, haha XD

Well, alot has changed with my Fred story since first introduced. The reason I haven't uploaded the script at all (like I promised a while back) is because.... well like all artists/writers, I didn't think the story was solid enough. The first draft I wrote of the script was pretty much just getting the ideas on paper. But now that I'm looking back and reading it, there were alot of things that had loose ends, and things I needed to add to make a point stronger. So... yeah, that's why. It's still under construction.

One of the BIG major changes to the story, is this little scene right here. And it was the simplest change. I thought the "Missing" posters for Fred was alittle too complicated. So INSTEAD 8D.... he gots a brand spankin new collar. Cause... yeah it's easier.

So Fred gets to wear a nice fancy new collar when wondering around the streets. And boy is that collar fancy.
Oh you fancy huh!

I actually had a lot of fun doing this, despite having to go through a whopping five variations before I settled on this one. Normally, for trades, I only do two options at most. For some reason this one went through a lot more.

Gee, I am pretty sure I go overboard with textures at times. :'|a Couldn't find anything suitably vintage-y, though, so uh. Flowers.
