Deep in our eyes.

This four-inch clay sculpture is an impression, an echo of a dreamer's reality. Every nuance of their form and position is symbolic. The black and the white represent cultures at variance. It could be any two. They are sitting so close beside each other, the warmth of companionship arises. Their attitudes are so similar that you might almost think that they understand each other - but no. They are facing opposite directions, each silent, each lost in her private thoughts. Their heads are tilted, thinking, and listening to their common breathing; their hands are clasped, body language as mute as their indtistinguishable mouths.

This is based entirely on a dream I had. (Silence can be such a comfort - it gives the pretense of understanding, when spoken words can do nothing but hurt us.) We were, and still are, 'not speaking to each other', both in dream and in reality. But in my dream, we passed each other in a wooden-floored hallway, and she stopped, so I did too...Each looking straight ahead, each silent...basically the same orientation as the above sculpture, except in the dream, we were standing up still. I wanted to capture that moment in time, even if it is a time and a place that will never exist with us within it. It is dear to me, because for that fleeting moment I was comforted by the pretence of the warmth of understanding between us.

The background is a blue scarf that someone we both know gave me from China. (Blue has always been the colour I chose to represent myself, along with the elements wind and water.) Beneath the sculpture is a black silk scarf, obviously also representative of the figure in black.

The lighting is candles on one side, and daylight through blue curtains on the other side. (This again is symbolic - her fire, my water.) The figures were crafted from air-drying clay and painted with acrylics. Their floor was from cut-up sections of popcicle stick, stained with paint.

The above poem suits it because it speaks of the distance between people allowing healing to take place ("the distance between you and us - our convalescence").

Anyway, this was made for my mom when we moved into our new house to go by the fireplace. It's a clay collab with of my dog who passed away last year. Sarah (my dog) used to sleep by this freestanding fireplace we used to have. Now we have a real one and so this goes on the mantel. It's about 1/4 scale. helped me with the sculpting and I painted it. My mom started bawling when I gave it to her.

edit* The ear got broken off, so that's why one of the ears looks strange. ]]> By the fireplace in 2004
