Sara lives on a frontier planet--one that, while furnished with many "modern" amenities like her hoverboard, their airlock, and the like--is still an outpost on the fringe of society. Energy is precious; other than the limited solar power that can be gathered during the day, fossil fuels must be shipped to the surface. (As they live on a hunk of dirt and ice, fossil fuels are neither commonplace nor easy to harvest on their planet.) As such, the use of superfluous lighting is frowned upon.<br /><br />Hanukkah is known as the Festival of Lights; one candle is lit on the first night, and an additional candle is lit on each additional night. Oil and wicks are used in some traditional menorahs instead of ordinary candles. The candle-lighting ritual is basically the main ritual of Hanukkah...well, besides food. Traditional Hanukkah food (latkes, fried doughnuts) is fried in oil, too, to symbolize the sacred oil found in the Temple after it had been desecrated by invaders...<br /><br />So. Oil is forbidden, but oil is also central to the holiday. (The &#039;Twisted Reality&#039; bit). The second part is very rushed. The deadline came quicker than expected, so I&#039;ve had to do this as quickly as possible - I wrote about 1,250 words in less than an hour. That&#039;s why it might turn a bit shit. In all honesty, I don&#039;t know if it does or not, I haven&#039;t even had a chance to read it through. <br /><br />I will revise it as soon as possible but I wanted to make sure I got it in before the deadline. I am highly doubtful it&#039;ll win - but hey, at least I&#039;ve made the effort, right?<br /><br />It&#039;d be awesome if people could point out any glaring errors in the comments - I would love a good crit. However, if someone is kind enough to provide me with one, then please take into consideration that I still need to revise the piece myself, and so it shouldn&#039;t be too in depth - i.e. la paragraph by paragraph crit, for example. It clung on as dearly as it could, but being unable to talk, it couldn&#146;t call for help &#150; and, in such a large metropolis, no-one would notice it to save it from losing its grip. Swiftly, it slipped from the tattered roof and fell into the shallow pool forming underneath. Another droplet was already beginning to form on the ceiling, reflections of the surrounding metal walls being twisted through it as it swelled and, eventually, suffered the same fate as the many droplets before it.<br /><br />The walls were thin and corrugated, and had devolved over the years from a swish si ]]></media:text>

It&#146;s time for the story!&#148; the nursery droid called, her carefully programmed voice resonating with the traditional joy and love so long associated with XMass.<br /><br />There was a sudden series of whirrs as each of the 3 doors to the nursery slid open, and her charges, from tiny not-walks to the older junior-techs flew through, pulling themselves through the air with the assistance of the handles found on the walls of the colony station for just that purpose.  The droid waited with seeming patience as each of her charges lowered themselves onto the cushions scattered about the room, and then closed the doors and activat ]]></media:text>

Not brighter, or dimmer, but something about it suggested that it was not the same bright star that watched over those first Christmases so many years ago. Not that there was anybody around that could remember how it had been &#150; of course they were all long gone.<br /><br />The star that now hung in the sky over the crater-pitted desert was larger than any other in the night sky.
