This was written for submission to the Villianous Villanelle contest being held by =PoetryPlease.

Normally I'd go iambic pentameter (a 5-point rhythm) but I couldn't force the piece around that, so opted for tetrameter instead, (a 4-point rhythm).

Chernabog was the Demon from "Night on Bald Mountain" in the Walt Disney movie Fantasia.

Mordred

This is the first poem I've written in over a year.

Mordred, in Arthurian legend, was the son of King Arthur and his half-sister Morgause (sometimes his other half sister, but I like Morgause). Basically, Arthur's Camelot was based off the idea of good intentions and upholding the law, not physical force. However, he was scared of Mordred, so he had all babies born around the time that Mordred was born sent in a ship and drowned. Mordred was the only baby who survived. Mordred grew up learning to hate Arthur, hoping to one day see to it that Arthur was ruined. Later, he joined Arthur's court and exposed the affair of Arthur's wife Guenevere and best knight Lancelot, forcing Arthur to obey his law and order them to death. This led to a series of events where Mordred took over, and Arthur's ideal society was lost.

A Quite Serious Villanelle

A villanelle inspired by the late Ledger's performance as Joker in The Dark Knight film. As I had thought, it did not qualify for the contest. I understand and do feel bad that it didn't make it, but inspiration and lack there of from the paramaters of the contest left me listless and unable to compose such a work, so I went with what I enjoyed. Alas, I found it quite fun to craft and I hope you will enjoy it.

So this is my entry to *PoetryPlease's Villainous Villanelles contest.

Trying to think about a villain to write about (and thinking that I probably wouldn't come up with an idea before the deadline, much to *ThornyEnglishRose's dismay), I was suddenly stricken with the idea of a diabetic witch.

So, if it's not clear (I hope it is!), this is about the witch from Hansel and Gretel. In this telling, the witch was actually a normal woman cursed by another witch to be unable to cook or eat anything but sweets. Over the years she got flabby, ugly, and diabetic... when it became a matter of life or death, she began considering her options for food, and somehow realized that human meat still seemed to work for her. So she started using her talents for cooking sweets to lure kids to her waiting oven.

I'm particularly pleased with how well it came out! I'd only written the refrains before tonight, although I knew most of what I wanted to say. Tonight I sat down, hammered out most of it, fiddled with the meter, changed some words, worked on some rhymes... and got it to a point where I don't think I'll be able to improve it much, if at all.

That said, comments and suggestions for improvements are always welcome.

Mirror, Mirror

For =PoetryPlease's villanelles contest. As some of you know, I have a soft spot for villanelles. They were my category in the Spring Cleaning miscat reporting last spring and I really started to like the form - and to develop a certain admiration for those who can write a good one, having tried it myself 5-6 years ago and not been particularly successful.

Well anyway, I saw =PoetryPlease's contest and I figured I really had to have another attempt at it. I mean, I know the form inside out - there's no excuse, right? So I did and I enjoyed it and I don't think the result's bad at all.

So, besides being about villanelles, what was the contest?
Well, they called it the Villainous Villanelle contest and the short version is that you had to write a villanelle from the point of view of a villain in a fairytale. (The long version can be found here.)

Why did I choose this particular villain(ess )? Well, obviously you can't have all that repetition without a reason or it's just being repeated for the sake of it. Repetition is great at showing obsession, so I tried to think of obsessive villains. The queen from Snow White IMMEDIATELY sprang to mind! (Who's the fairest? Is it me? Who's the fairest now? Still me? What about now?!) I tried for a little while to think of other villains to give them a chance, but she was the best fit (Hook also a viable contender, but not quite so good).

Anyway, if you read all that well done.

Enjoy This is the villanelle I wrote for [link] held by My inspiration is off of the "evil?" stepmother of cinderella, which was written by Charles Perrault in 1697. He is also the not-so-well-known author of "Tales of Mother Goose." (Fun Fact = The glass slippers were originally fur slippers. They became glass after they mistranslated the story, which was in french, and fur they were no more.)

i chose rumpelstiltskin. i've no idea why.
it seemed to be the correct thing to do at the time.

in any event, i could hardly resist. i enjoy this poetic style far too much for somebody who loathes to rhyme in verse. perhaps one of these days i might actually pen a sonnet.

This is my submission to *PoetryPlease's contest, Villianous Villanelles. Baba Yaga, the speaker, is a witch from Slavic folk stories who flies through the woods in a giant mortar looking for small children to eat, who lives in a house that walks on chicken legs. She is very cruel, but also very wise. If you know how to ask her properly, sometimes she will help you.

The preview picture, Vasilissa the Beautiful at the Hut of Baba Yaga, comes from Wikimedia Commons. The original artist was Ivan Bilibin, an influential Russian illustrator and stage designer.

This is my entry for *PoetryPlease's Villainous Villanelles contest [link]

It is from the perspective of the evil queen in Snow White. In the Brother's Grimm version of the tale, the queen did not know that Snow White had been awoken from her death sleep (she had awoken when the coffin, while being transported by the prince to his palace, was jostled and the bit of poisoned apple fell from her mouth). She was invited to the wedding of the prince and his young queen (of whom she had no idea was Snow White). Dressed in all her splendor, she asked the mirror her usual question and was shocked when it answered that the young queen was indeed fairer than she. Upon arriving at the wedding, the queen was outraged at recognizing Snow White as the bride...and as it turned out some iron shoes had already been set on a fire and were then presented to the evil queen...she was forced to dance in the red hot shoes until she died.

So I actually wrote several drafts of several different poems for this contest. This final draft, humorously enough, was the result of the challenge of a classmate to enter a taunt into the poem itself. I readily accepted his challenge, and this is what came of it. I will be submitting the other poems as regular deviations, and submitting them to my school's literary magazine. Anyway, I'll hope that everyone enjoys this and wishes me luck!

This is my first villanelle, so critiques would be greatly appreciated, especially before judging begins on 10-30.

*edit* Yea, there's another stanza in there now. Which is actually a good thing. It let me add a line I had wanted to, but that I had no place for. I also changed the last line... and I like it.
As I see it, forms are meant to be... adjusted. Even iambic pentameter

This is the first Villanelle I have ever written and I must admit I hadn't even heard about it before reading about the contest. I don't know a thing about different styles of poems, I just write as my heart and instinct tell me to. So it was a nice challenge to construct a poem according to a strict structure for a change. I have used 's Villanelle Maker for this poem as to not get confused about what line goes where.

This poem is about the evil witch from the fairy tale of "Hansel and Gretel". I believe this to be what the witch would say while in the oven, gone crazy by the heat. Or maybe she was already crazy. She keeps repeating the first line of her phrase to lure children in. "Nibble, nibble, little mouse. Who is nibbling at my house?"

I hope you like this piece. It's very different from anything else in my gallery.

I liked the idea of the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. My inspiration spurred from the giant’s words when he enters his house:

“ Fee-fi-fo-fum,
I smell the blood of an Englishman,
Be he alive, or be he dead,
I'll have his bones to grind my bread.”
One thing that I feel like I should explain are the words “the river wide” because it’s probably a little confusing. It’s an allusion to the River of Styx. Yes, I love my Greek mythical allusions. But I thought it’d be nice to end with a curse that leads on to the afterlife. I couldn’t just kill the giant and leave it at that. It wouldn’t entirely fit with the theme. Not in my mind at least.

I decided to take a bit of a realistic spin on the themes of dark, fairy tale, and Halloween by using some satire. If all goes according to plan, neither the vampire trendist nor the misguidedly independent young woman should seem a particularly innocent character.

But it was definitely a fun seasonal piece, and I think I'll be doing more of these contest type thingies regardless of the outcome.
