            </media:community>            <media:description type="html"><![CDATA[ This is the first poem I&#039;ve written in over a year.<br /><br />--<br /><br />Mordred, in Arthurian legend, was the son of King Arthur and his half-sister Morgause (sometimes his other half sister, but I like Morgause). Basically, Arthur&#039;s Camelot was based off the idea of good intentions and upholding the law, not physical force. However, he was scared of Mordred, so he had all babies born around the time that Mordred was born sent in a ship and drowned. Mordred was the only baby who survived. Mordred grew up learning to hate Arthur, hoping to one day see to it that Arthur was ruined. Later, he joined Arthur&#039;s court and exposed the affair of Arthur&#039;s wife Guenevere and best knight Lancelot, forcing Arthur to obey his law and order them to death. As I had thought, it did not qualify for the contest. I understand and do feel bad that it didn&#039;t make it, but inspiration and lack there of from the paramaters of the contest left me listless and unable to compose such a work, so I went with what I enjoyed.             </media:community>            <media:description type="html"><![CDATA[ So this is my entry to *<a class="u" href="http://poetryplease.deviantart.com/">PoetryPlease</a>&#039;s <a href="http://news.deviantart.com/article/57781/">Villainous Villanelles contest</a>.<br /><br />Trying to think about a villain to write about (and thinking that I probably wouldn&#039;t come up with an idea before the deadline, much to *<a class="u" href="http://thornyenglishrose.deviantart.com/">ThornyEnglishRose</a>&#039;s dismay), I was suddenly stricken with the idea of a diabetic witch.<br /><br />So, if it&#039;s not clear (I hope it is!), this is about the witch from Hansel and Gretel. In this telling, the witch was actually a normal woman cursed by another witch to be unable to cook or eat anything but sweets. Over the years she got flabby, ugly, and diabetic... when it became a matter of life or death, she began considering her options for food, and somehow realized that human meat still seemed to work for her. So she started using her talents for cooking sweets to lure kids to her waiting oven.<br /><br />I&#039;m particularly pleased with how well it came out! I&#039;d only written the refrains before tonight, although I knew most of what I wanted to say. Tonight I sat down, hammered out most of it, fiddled with the meter, changed some words, worked on some rhymes... and got it to a point where I don&#039;t think I&#039;ll be able to improve it much, if at all.<br /><br />That said, comments and suggestions for improvements are always welcome.<br /><br />Special thanks to *<a class="u" href="http://flutterings.deviantart.com/">Flutterings</a> for her input and suggestions as I was writing this piece. <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/h/heart.gif" width="15" height="13" alt=":heart:" title="Heart" /> ]]></media:description>

As some of you know, I have a soft spot for villanelles. They were my category in the Spring Cleaning miscat reporting last spring and I really started to like the form - and to develop a certain admiration for those who can write a good one, having tried it myself 5-6 years ago and not been particularly successful.<br /><br />Well anyway, I saw =<a class="u" href="http://poetryplease.deviantart.com/">PoetryPlease</a>&#039;s contest and I figured I really had to have another attempt at it. I mean, I know the form inside out - there&#039;s no excuse, right? So I did and I enjoyed it and I don&#039;t think the result&#039;s bad at all.<br /><br />So, besides being about villanelles, what was the contest?<br />Well, they called it the Villainous Villanelle contest and the short version is that you had to <b>write a villanelle from the point of view of a villain in a fairytale</b>. (The long version can be found <b><a href="http://news.deviantart.com/article/57781/">here</a></b>.)<br /><br />Why did I choose this particular villain(ess <img src="http://e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/wink.gif" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" title=";) (Wink)" />)? Well, obviously you can&#039;t have all that repetition without a reason or it&#039;s just being repeated for the sake of it. Repetition is great at showing obsession, so I tried to think of obsessive villains. The queen from Snow White IMMEDIATELY sprang to mind! (Who&#039;s the fairest? Is it me? Who&#039;s the fairest now? Still me? What about now?!) In the Brother&#039;s Grimm version of the tale, the queen did not know that Snow White had been awoken from her death sleep (she had awoken when the coffin, while being transported by the prince to his palace, was jostled and the bit of poisoned apple fell from her mouth). She was invited to the wedding of the prince and his young queen (of whom she had no idea was Snow White). Dressed in all her splendor, she asked the mirror her usual question and was shocked when it answered that the young queen was indeed fairer than she. Upon arriving at the wedding, the queen was outraged at recognizing Snow White as the bride...and as it turned out some iron shoes had already been set on a fire and were then presented to the evil queen...she was forced to dance in the red hot shoes until she died. ]]></media:description>

I don&#039;t know a thing about different styles of poems, I just write as my heart and instinct tell me to. So it was a nice challenge to construct a poem according to a strict structure for a change. I have used <a href="http://cypher-neo.deviantart.com/"><img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.com/avatars/c/y/cypher-neo.gif" width="50" height="50" alt=":iconcypher-neo:" title="cypher-neo"/></a>&#039;s <a href="http://cypher-neo.deviantart.com/art/Villanelle-Maker-95724637">Villanelle Maker</a> for this poem as to not get confused about what line goes where.<br /><br />This poem is about the evil witch from the fairy tale of "Hansel and Gretel". I believe this to be what the witch would say while in the oven, gone crazy by the heat. Or maybe she was already crazy. She keeps repeating the first line of her phrase to lure children in. "Nibble, nibble, little mouse. Who is nibbling at my house?"<br /><br />I hope you like this piece. My inspiration spurred from the giant&#146;s words when he enters his house:<br /><br /><i><blockquote>&#147; Fee-fi-fo-fum,<br />I smell the blood of an Englishman,<br />Be he alive, or be he dead,<br />I&#039;ll have his bones to grind my bread.&#148;</blockquote></i>One thing that I feel like I should explain are the words &#147;the river wide&#148; because it&#146;s probably a little confusing. It&#146;s an allusion to the River of Styx. Yes, I love my Greek mythical allusions. <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/animesweat.gif" width="19" height="19" alt="^^;" title="Sweating a little..." /> But I thought it&#146;d be nice to end with a curse that leads on to the afterlife. I couldn&#146;t just kill the giant and leave it at that. It wouldn&#146;t entirely fit with the theme.             <description><![CDATA[ For the <a href="http://news.deviantart.com/article/57781/">Villainous Villanelles Contest</a> hosted by *<a class="u" href="http://poetryplease.deviantart.com/">PoetryPlease</a>.<br /><br />I liked the idea of the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. My inspiration spurred from the giant&#146;s words when he enters his house:<br /><br /><i><blockquote>&#147; Fee-fi-fo-fum,<br />I smell the blood of an Englishman,<br />Be he alive, or be he dead,<br />I&#039;ll have his bones to grind my bread.&#148;</blockquote></i>One thing that I feel like I should explain are the words &#147;the river wide&#148; because it&#146;s probably a little confusing. It&#146;s an allusion to the River of Styx. Yes, I love my Greek mythical allusions. <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/a/animesweat.gif" width="19" height="19" alt="^^;" title="Sweating a little..." /> But I thought it&#146;d be nice to end with a curse that leads on to the afterlife. I couldn&#146;t just kill the giant and leave it at that. It wouldn&#146;t entirely fit with the theme. If all goes according to plan, neither the vampire trendist nor the misguidedly independent young woman should seem a particularly innocent character.<br /><br />But it was definitely a fun seasonal piece, and I think I&#039;ll be doing more of these contest type thingies regardless of the outcome. ]]></media:description>
