I'm a huge fan of RE series and played the 5th game to death!
So I took on this challenge of creating an illustration of the RE movie's executioner about to sandwich this character I created.
I wished I had more time though haha, didn't realize the deadline was today.

I started this last week and I probably spent 25-30+ hours on it. Intuos 4, photoshop cs4

Hey all, sorry for such a lack of updates recently hope this makes up for it.

This is an entry for Resident Evil: Envision the Executioner Contest. My first Deviantart contest entry ever...hope I at least make it to the top 15

Here we have The Executioner fighting The Popocarim ( Bat Boss from RE5; Love that guy it's so cute XP)

I guess this is what happens when Zombies/parasites get bored waiting for the heroes, eh?

In this scene Alice is fighting The Executioner in the shower room. Alice is running and shooting the Executioner as he's swinging his axe breaking everything in sight. Milla Jovovich is such a badass in the Resident Evil series, and this is one shower room scene i wont forget! I did a few sketches and layouts in pencil first. Then I scanned the finished pencils and inked it with MS. Then finally colored in Ps.

Thanks a lot you guys for all the great comments and critiques. Pretty much went back to the drawing board on this one and turned it into something I feel a lot better submitting to the competition.
Special thanks to rantz for the boot in the ass and for making me realize how much potential this one really had. You rock dude.
Anyway, hope you like it, and now I can get started on my second entry.

Executioner Sculpture

My entry for the Resident Evil :Envision the Executioner contest.

Let me start off by saying this was the most challenging thing I ever had to make.

Mostly because of the time limit, I started about 1 and a half weeks ago before the deadline and employed every technique I had every learned about sculpture and painting.

I used welding for the axe which is an actual metal blade, who claimed its first casualty during production. (me, index finger while sharpening doh).
The Axe weighs about 1.43 lbs, I took it to a meat market and had it put on the food scale. My sculpture can hold the axe using his hands without having it being attached permanently.

His body and Apron and cowl are all separate pieces. Then made a stand out of scrap metal, welding rebar and 1/2'' gauge steel rod.

The meat hooks were forged out of steel rods, by bending them using a vice and a hammer and anvil to get the right bend. Then sharpened to a point using files. Everything save for the chain was hand made by me. Progress shots can be found on my website

I first looked at the character, who is this executioner, a giant who wields an equally immense weapon. So I thought about real life people who reminded me of him, I looked at actor, Nathan Jones and Eric butterbean Esch, who is a big guy and can really knock people out and also sumo wrestlers who are immensely strong athletes. I studied their physiques I began to get an idea of his physical characteristic. Using the ecorché method I created the body, a hybrid of a strong man who had a lot of mass. I looked at the video game images and also the toy, I noticed that the NECAs version of the Executioner was a bit off. The forearms were really scrawny, and I felt that if someone that needs to wield such a big weapon, his legs were too small, so I decided to create what I think is more a more adequate body type, someone with huge latissimus dorsai and trapezius for lifting and pulling and also strong calves and quads from always having dead weight around him.
So I hope you enjoyed this sculpture.

I had fun with this and tried to keep it pretty simple. I originally had him a lot fatter and with the axe a lot bigger as well, but it looked too exaggerated and didn't fit the tone of the film.

Second entry. I've always loved the notion of two baddies facing off. In this one we see the Executioner versus Curtis Miller after he's been transformed by the G-Type virus.(RE Degeneration, Film) Found him after doing some research online trying to find something(besides the giant in RE5) that would give the Executioner a run for his blood stained money. Wasn't really a lot of reference on him, so I had to go with a couple of pics I could find. Seems to have turned out okay. One more planned and I'll be done I swear.

I decided to resubmit my piece after sitting on it overnight. I was up till about 3 in the morning last night working on it and decided I needed to add a little something.
While I liked the original look that was very minimal and desaturated, I felt I needed it to look much more menacing (particularly to fit the focal character).
Now with it placed over hellfire I feel it has a lot more intensity. Originally when I did this I didn't want to just draw The Executioner in action, but to make more of an unnatural visual. I wanted it to look very grotesque and surreal with a lot of detail but placed so that there was a definitive shape and not leaving it broken up into monotony.
I also liked the idea of The Executioner sort of climbing up a strange mountain of corpses/zombies with his weapon held almost like a flag, illustrating his badassery.

Hope I pulled it off, and good luck to all of the other entrants.

Third and final entry. Had a blast with all three and actually learned a lot not only about the character, but anatomy and creating dynamic scenes as well.

Now I'm going to have to see the movie and get the game so I can see if my interpretations were correct.

Goodnight, sleep tight. That's what I kept thinking.

The first person view usually gets me. I don't trust my photoshop skills to make it like more gritty so I penciled it in. I got a little dirty from the graphite because drawing on sketch paper apparently smears a lot. I'll know better next time. I haven't drawn a horror pic since the Licker in RE2, feeling old all of a sudden. This was fun, anyways.

now my artist comment:

So, Ive been a huge fan of Resident Evil since it first came out. I remember being seven years old when my dad bought the first one. Everyday i would be so scared to watch him play it, but couldnt keep my eyes away from all the violence and gore. I remember having dreams of the Tyrant coming after me and me having to find the rocket launcher (which always seemed to be under a bed). Then as the years went by, resident Evil 2 came out (which i can say is my absolute favorite) I loved the way they intertwined the characters and thier relationships. (ANd yes, Sherry is still my favorite character to this day and YES i want to know what happened to her) Then cam Resident Evil 3 "Nemesis" I absolutely loved they way they added the dodge to the game, cus you know back in the older games, once youve been attacked you ARE attacked. Resident Evil Zero, on gamecube utterly blew my mind with how much story there was to be had before the mansion incident it was remarkable and beautiful all at the same time. Getting to know Rebecca Chambers was a really good thing too, because I hadnt really liked her from the first game, except for her one moment of spraying Chris in the face, that was and still is a LAWLACOSTER.

Then Resident Evil 4 came out. I was completely in awe at the change of them dang camera angles and the change from static angles to over the shoulder third person. Capcoms biggest step in the right direction. The only thing i really missed were the zombies, but you know what I got over it!

Last, but definately not least, Resident Evil 5. Bringing back Chris Redfield with more characters and plot. ANd of course the ever evil Wesker. I love the games so much. all of them.

Now came the movies. SOmething a little skewered when it came to comparing to the games, They are a masterpiece in themselves. Im such a devoted fan, it doesnt bother me that it doesnt follow the games plots. Its just another way of storytelling while still having good zombie fun! <3

Heres to the lovely Executioner who I will be seeing in theaters the day he comes out! <3

Thank you Capcom for creating epic games and movies I will always cherish and definately pass to future generations!

I haven't seen the last couple movies of the RE series so I think I'll have trouble "Matching the tone of the films". But that's ok. I love the games so much I wanna enter anyway. @.@

I could never hide from The Executioner in the games. I could run...but then I couldn't fight him while running. lol He was always one of my favorite boss fights and I loved how he would knock the walls in and such. So I drew him in some odd obscure place that he's brought down around himself while trying to find his victim.

Not gonna put a warning on this one since my entry for the Mento contest was invisible when I made the semi-finalists due to it. If dA has a problem with it though I'll put it on.

Tried a lot of new stuff with this piece. I might put up a step by step for it if anyone is interested.

Since the Executioner got no face..
I used in this Illustration my character's face to show how frightening and scary the executioner is.
enhanced this feeling by the dramatic poses, the colors and the narrow tunnel. taking in consideration the boundaries of the movie theme and tone.
My target was to express the violence in an indirect way, and leaving the rest to the audience imagination. inspiring him with the name.

Here is my submission for the contest. I wanted to amp up the undead, add a bit of questionably obtained leather, juice him with Umbrella Steroids and deliver a dynamic boogey man.

The sculpture is about 7 inches tall, made of Super Sculpey, plexi-glass, and acrylic paints.

Description-
'She looks behind her to see a group of slow moving zombies chasing her. She finally slows down, and catches her breath as she realizes she has outrun the disgusting brain thirsty creatures. She continues walking down the corridor, with the assumption that she's walking to the exit, ending her horrid journey. As she walks further and further into the darkness, she notices a sign that says dead end. From within the shadows, a towering, menacing figure holds its axe as it walks towards her. She screams in terror, and attempts to flee, but the heavy axe finds its way towards her, slamming the ground. Whether she lives or not... that's something we'll just never know.'

Comments-
I worked meticulously hard on this digital painting, working on it as soon as I heard about the contest. This is all painted in with Photoshop CS4 and with Wacom Intuos 4 Medium Tablet. I wanted the axe to almost be a character all of its own; Blood thirsty, gritty, and visceral. When you think of the Executioner, chances are you mention his axe first, and that's what makes him so friggin' scary. I loved working on the texture of this piece. It was insanely difficult, but I believe I pulled off the mood and effect very well. Also, I didn't want too many things to distract from the main elements of this piece. I was originally going to do a piece with Alice fighting the Executioner, but I didn't think this would offer a sense of terror/horror like having an unknown character whom you're not sure can fight back would.

This is my submission for the contest. Had lots of fun on it.
I used Photoshop, Nuke and a Wacom Intuous 3 to make this.

All I can say is little dude over there is going to get pwned....

Did some subtle things to it like have the lighting change to give it more of a real feeling also if you look at his apron on the left bottom corner it moves(but you have to wait for it to load completely) haha.

I'm still wondering why I waited 'till the last day (and late last night) to start this entry. However overall, I did enjoy creating this piece . The background is pretty simple but I did so in order to concentrate one's view toward the Executioner; the same can be said for the first person view. *Edit: I was wondering about the warning because of the blood (first time working with blood), so I'm guessing it's fine compared with all of the other entries?

If you asked what made me decide to do the Executioner as a playing card design in a field of debris...hell, I couldn't tell you. It came to me, and I went with it. 'Bout all there is to it, really.

Went with a very simplified, kind of cartoonish rendition of Big Ex, which I hope is offset by the card weathering, and the setting in which I've placed it. I took major liberties with the axe design to fit the "flip-around" look, which I think turned out quite nicely.

I blurred the card a hint to match it to the stock photo I used as a backdrop; that actually made the whole thing look more like it was photographed. Maybe I'll upload a clearer version of just the card later on.
