Contest - Caterpillar

ANYWAYS this is me as the caterpillar (she had nipples but i was afraid it would be "inappropriate" in someway and get my dq'ed so I covered it with this wave of... blue... things.......) I've always wanted to use colours that are harsh to my eyes so I did it and my eyes died. I've always liked to draw narcissistic people and so I did and I liked it. I've always loved rococo patterns and expensive looking useless luxury items and so I drew it and it was ok. overall I'm happy with the picture but I missed the poor blue nipples.

the caterpillar gives advice and seems to be either wise or just full of himself, of which I chose the latter to have fun with. with this pic I tried to portray the following (my own ideas or from the stories): a caterpillar is pretty small, insignificant and useless, but she shows off her satisfaction and high esteem with her little throne on the mushrooms. a caterpillar is to become a better being by turning into a butterfly, but she probably thinks she is superior to butterflies in her state and brush off her future as insignificant as smoke. her vibrant colours--that which is the opposite of the environment within which she placed herself, asserts her self importance by standing out instead of blending in for safety. lastly, as one of the characters alice meets and seeks help from, the better choice becomes unclear between being lost in the world with many problems, and trusting the advice of a creature with such an appearance.

hopefully the slight strangeness fits into wonderland's madness as well. the whole pic is like full of drug hints too without me even trying. I mean like greens, shrooms, smoke and shapes, radioactive colours, and a caterpillar that is supposed to be somewhat attractive.

Really odd work?

Only used 1 brush for this one, and the dregs of a watercolor set I'd had since elementary school. I need to buy some new supplies x_X

Some homies picked me up the other day to go for a cruise, managed to snap this pic on my iPhone. It was a Kodak moment.

So this took about two weeks and the end result is completley different from I had in mind when I started. I think this looks much better than the original idea. I used really saturated colors, a lot more so than normal, but I dig it.

I was really inspired to create a manipulation with a violin in it after watching this touching, sad, and sweet thai commercial (with eng subs):[link]

I felt compelled to manipulate something like that (with a bit of a fantasy theme of course)
-tried making a crystal violin and failed I didn't know how the background looked so I couldn't exactly make it transparent =x It just came out all blue. Oh well

The girl in the picture is me as Alice from Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland.
The dress is inspired (but with some personal touch) in a beautiful dress that Alice wears in the film, concretely the dress that the Hatter gives to her when she was in the teapot
I wear this hairstyle daily.

I was inspired by this verse of Avril Lavigne's song, Alice

2010 - Lazy days with Totoro

Is Totoro a monster or a forest spirit? Regardless, he meshes well with the spirit of Halloween.

Scene is not entirely original but I added some "improvements" and adapted for a 3 tone pumpkin. This was never meant to be illuminated with a candle but it does look cool lit.

Ritual at the Ruins

This is my entry for the Fantasy Earth Zero contest, and if you can't tell I went with the Sorcerer idea.

I love the idea of spell casting, but I hate that 98% of mages all have staves and ROBES. Agh. So I went with a bit of a different look.

She has two ritual daggers on her thighs, light equipment so she can move easily and be free to wave her arms around without catching her sleeves on fire!

I came back and added some more work to this, not a lot, just some touch ups on the water, the background, a bit of the lighting. I changed the reflections a bit so there isn't that illusion of a vertical line anymore.

Process:
It all started when I saw that there was a challenge to prove the existance of Unicorns and Magic...
My friends know that I believe in Magic and Unicorns and Fairies and Elves and in all magical creatures! They have filled my life with joy and happiness since I was a little girl.

So I found a beautiful horse first and worked ours extracting the background and smudging the hair. Then I searched for a Unicorn Horn and changed it's shape a bit, and the color. I had the first background that would lead the landscape (the trees you see with leaves now, are the original trees in the first background). The other backgrounds were combined to provide light (a lot of them was masked), and the one with the trees I loved to add the magical forest of legends.

I enhanced colors with new layers and painting over them, using Gaussian Blur and Screen properties.

Then I added the water and masked everything but the pond you see.

Then I placed the flowers to the left, used one leaf to create all the leaves to the left and then started working with very tiny parts of the purchased flower to create the branches to the right.

The tools I used the most were to change colors (color balance and Hue) and exposure. Even yellow flowers were used (changing the hue).

The lotus were extracted and new flowers were placed, removing the others with the clone tool.

At the beginning I had a lady watching the scene, but I finally removed it. Some other details were also changed.

In sum, I did not count how many layers I had on the work, but there were many (imagine only creating the leaves of the trees, flower by flower in little pieces! It's all threaded flowers!! And then, matching and balancing each ...

It was nice to get inspired again after such a long time without having any ideas to work on

I didnt want to make something full of pink, but superficial. I chose a deeper meaning with a touch of pink

Ive been thinking about this concept for a while now I wanted something beautiful to rise from something decayed life in unexpected places hope even in the darkest hour at least thats what it means to me. You can interpret it however you like

You all know by now that this is a touchy subject for me so I wont include personal details this time..

But Im really proud of this one.. its a huge 6000x6000 work with nice details.. took me forever to finish it cause I changed my mind a lot

This is one of my daydreams

These are the snow-topped, windswept peaks of the Thrista mountains!
It is known that an "ancient race" so called once lived on these mountains guarding the way into the Strontain homelands!These mountain dwellers were also said to be hiding a powerful weapon that could wipe out an entire civilizations once set in motion. Supposedly that's how and why they disappeared.
The towers that rest on these mountains continue father underground Tunneling into the mountain. But now are even more extended and connected underground by tunnels and caves all dug by a mysterious man that now inhabits these mountains. Many say He is a new guardian of the Thristan pass but others say he is just a scoundrel who wants to get his hands on that ancient weapon. The people who know him call him Mr. White and how he digs these extensive tunnels by himself...Nobody knows.
Here is a picture of one of the guardian's towers buried in snow with only a balcony entrance still visible. Standing over the swirling clouds below!

Flying High

Every time I used to go back to school, I felt like I was flying high and on top of the world. I liked to look at it as a positive thing, that's why these balloons are high in the sky.

My design was inspired by a wallpaper that I really like made by a fellow deviant. I can no longer find the old file, otherwise I would link to it.

Everything else is hand drawn in photoshop.

Edit: Changed bottom clouds to match the others better. Much more fluffy.

Edit 2: Due to this statement in the rules "...must be the exclusive original work of the entrant and made for the Contest...", I removed the background texture which was not mine, and I also removed the swirly lines that I had used from a brush and instead made my own. Also, I made my own clouds because I had used a brush for that too. So basically I just removed everything that is not mine. lol

Edit 3: Changed clouds again by photo manipulating some of my own photos.

EDIT 4: EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! I'm a semi-finalist!!! I can't even believe it!!

ok, this is a mixture of digital painting and photo-manip in photoshop elements.

OK, this is my entry for the "Picture Yourself in Wonderland" contest....I just gotta leave it alone and stop updating it I keep finding stuff I wanna mess with, lol

My first shoot at a surreal piece...Took about 11 hours in all. Had a hard time painting as I have only a laptop mousepad....it's like drawing with a rock. Anyways, enough of my complaining. Since I only had a portion of me to work with, I had my boyfriend take more pictures of my lower half holding a paint can and a makeup brush I attempted to "Alice-ice" myself...well, "Red-Queen-ize" myself? I had some curtains on either side, but they seemed to take away from the rest of the piece, especially the paint dripping from the flowers.

I tried making the corset look like velvet, and the cards sewn into the dress...I have never been much of a seamstress but have always wanted to make an outfit similar to this

Powers: Using music and sound to boost stats and deliver powerful sonic attacks. Cruise knows the perfect song to play for any situation, his thousands of hours spent cruising the internet for unknown bands lending to his superior song selection (surprising, as he makes such a "meh" DJ).

GEAR/ARMOR: Cruise contains constant music flow via headphones or built in speakers located in his backpack and gloves. When concentrated, the bitter, hateful sounds can empower Cruise, giving him increased speed and strength. He is also able to physically condense the sound waves into Orbs using his speaker gloves, which upon impact, smash his opponents square in the mouth, sending them reeling.

Fun Fact: Cruise's real name is Hadrian.

Cruise and Ramona met during their freshman year in college. During those fragile first few weeks away from home, they became inseparable. After a semester or two though, like most first year acquaintances, they realized they had literally nothing in common. The relationship remained stable till Ramona met Roxy. She left Cruise shortly after that.

Crushed, Cruise careened into an emotional psychosis. He stayed up night after night, trying to find the perfect song to fuel his anger, or say what he needed to win Ramona back. THAT song never came, but what Cruise discovered was the other powers the songs granted him.

Cruise seethed for 5 long years, doing nothing with a useless Bachelors Degree, DJ'ing at night to pay the bills. One night, during another mediocre set, he was approached by a well-dressed dickhat by the name of Gideon Graves. He told Cruise that he was forming a team of Exs to crush Ramona Flowers and her current boyfriend. Cruise, feeling the familiar rush of jealousy and anger, casually brushed it aside. Leaving a card as he left, Gideon flicked the hair from his eyes, turning as he said, "Roxy already said yes..." Cruise jammed the business card deep into his pocket, collected his gear, and stormed home.

Weeks later, during one of his bi-monthly laundry runs, Cruise came across the crumpled business card he'd jammed into his pants pocket months ago. A pay-phone call later, Cruise was on the next bus headed for Toronto, ready to finally end Romona, Roxy, and most of all...SCOTT PILGRIM.

Cause artists battle all the time, ^^ I made this with the idea of a warrior made of ink - thinking on japanese brushes, I thought of using japanese style (on the part of the splatter and the kanji) and the warrior part is based on a viking..and a barbarian...with long and big weapons...

Ok this was made with brushes, pentool, and flare on photoshop and illustrator. The planet in the back is Saturn. I tried making this [link] but I was in a hush and I just started learning 3D Max, so all credit goes to secondpictures, well ate least for the lines goes. I was able to create the planet. :/

It's been brought to my attention that I didn't make this a day ago, so some people think that it may not count. I'm contacting DA mods to make sure that my entry is ok. My entry was never used commercially, nor won any contests or had any DD's. It was an original idea with no purpose, so I decided to adapt it for the contest. I think that should be ok, because now it is an original work being used solely for this contest. There are other entries that have elements (textures/photographs etc) that were also not made yesterday & they are ok. Technically I did add some new details, revised, & did a bit of work to make this a new piece.

I'll revise this when I know for sure from a DA mod.

So if it weren't for 's cloud brushes
and 's leaves brushes I might not have made it on time ;w;

Concept:

For a contest of 'Alice in Wonderland' by Tim Burton I decided to pick the White Queen and reveal her real character.
Just look at the dark hair, eyes and lips and you will see, that there's a goth inside. And here it goes.
The White Rabbit is flabbergasted by her look, the spiderwebs at the door make the cat look drooling and perhaps the rabbit also is flabbergasted by seeing dame-stones where he supposed chess-figures.

My theme song for this is 'Collide - White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane cover)'.

Nice to know:

Chess is an old chinese war game, training in strategy and tactics. And many other games derived from that, not only some kind of 3d-chess in the series of 'Star Trek'. Imagine all those table-top games and those basing on hex-fields.

Technics:

After picking many references I created some rough drawings, which I used to illustrate this within Photoshop.
My usual technic is similar to airbrush. Masking the single elements (so I don't need to take that much care of the borders later on). Custom texture brushes increase the credibility. The original size would fit on a poster.
By example the robe has been made by several strokes of a smooth standard brush of Photoshop. Afterwards I used the liquify-filter to increase the sharpness of the edges and painted textures over it in different layer modes.

"Who Wants Tea?"

- Total of approximately 105 hours. (oh yes, 3 all nighters and now I'm drained xD )

- This is my very first digital drawing, I didn't think about using bigger brush at first, so when I finished the Hatter, it took me forever to finish Bandersnatch, using a 2px brush. xD (and the whole thing is about 4000 x 6000)

I depicted myself as the Mad Hatter, not just because he's my favorite character in the movie or he was well played my the legendary Johnny Depp, he has the personality that attracts to me the most, he's funny, loyal, sympathetic and brave. That is a portrait of myself, I wear glasses.

Beside myself as the Mad Hatter, I also added many of my favorite characters, but, because Originality is one of the relevant criteria, I decided to come up with my own Bandersnatch (yeah, inspired by a bulldog ) and used my friends' faces for Tweedledee, Tweedledum and the flowers.

So, wish me luck, enjoy.

PS: the symbols on the cup means "Wonderland" in Chinese. Well I'm not Chinese, I'm Vietnamese, but close.

THE DESIGN

The role description and background history described in the submission is only a proposal and should be viewed only as such.

The ship is a battlecruiser at 460m lengthwise, slightly smaller than a Hurricane (which has a length of 490m). Its main body is also quite small, just about the size of some configurations of the Loki class. But its 'wingspan' exceeds both that of the Cyclone's and the Hurricane's length at 594m. It's mostly bilaterally symmetrical with the exception of a few details and the thruster area which is radially symmetrical at its own pivot point.

I resisted the urge to go heavy and bulky and uber like I did with the Advent. Matari ships have one quite distinctive feature: they look like they're held together only by duct tape and fervent prayers of their crew to their tribal totems. LOL I wanted to keep that aesthetic. I love the tapered lines of the Hurricane and the pointy sleekness of Vagabonds, and some of their design elements inspired the shape of this. You can also see the aesthetics of the Rupture, Scythe, Firetail, and the Cyclone in it. The entire form of the ship however, is not inspired by a dragonfly, despite looking very much like one. It's actually inspired by the Thukker tribe logo (see Dorsal View). Which, for all we know, might have been inspired by dragonflies or some sort of bird (if they exist in New Eden) in its turn *shrug*.

THE TL;DR

This was a labor of <3. It's completely unwrapped and textured; diffuse, spec, reflection, normals, the whole shebang in 4 2048x map sets. Even places you sadly will never see from the limitations of the submission rules. No tiling textures, minimal reliance on actual geometry to flesh out details. Each individual window, each tiny little panel underneath the armor is painstakingly hand made. No overpainting, except for the thruster glow, it's all textures. Not the slapdash 'make generic details and fit faces over them' kind of textures either, but unwrapped with unique UV's (except where it's mirrored, of course). Not an easy task as this being quite skeletal, it has far more non-contiguous surface area than my first entry.

Like the Advent, this is somewhat a meld between the game-art 'optimize everything' discipline and devil-may-care edgeloop high poly modeling approach. I didn't rely too much on actual geometry and chose to detail parts in texture, mostly because I can't render much of anything past the 1 million poly mark, LOL. Texture, sadly, can't be shown in the orthos according to the rules. It does have the advantage though of having far simpler geometry (and thus easier to follow) while still maintaining the illusion of greater detail in its final form. Pretty much like how game engines actually do it anyway. I also detailed with function in mind. Not complexity for the sake of complexity. See comparison pictures linked above.

Total creation time, along with my other submission, the Amarrian Advent Battleship (and including concepting, modeling, unwrapping, texturing, creating the art and write-ups for the submission forms, interruptions, googling close-up references of existing ships, breaks, hours of staring at the screen wondering if I should make it like this or like that or if it was all worth it, two other ships started and abandoned along the way, redoing things and redoing them again, and that annoying thing called real life) is about three weeks.

Downtown Louisville at Night

Downtown Louisville is beautiful, especially at night with the lights making her glow. I've wanted to catch one of these moments for the longest time. Finally, one night in early June I set out on a journey to create this photo.

My second ever true panorama photo. For this one I had to take a small trip to the other side of the Ohio River into Indiana and find a way to get down to the river for the spot I wanted. I won't go into detail how I got there, because then I may implicate myself for something.

The night was hot and very humid and the ground where I stood was, for the most part, uneven and I was surrounded by brush. This made things challenging, because I wanted to hurry up and get things done since I was miserable, but I forced myself to take the time I need to get things right.

I took four photos to use for the pano, but only used three of them and then cropped out about half of the third one to even things up. I had to use a long exposure and after messing around with different times I finally settled on 3.6 seconds. Editing was done in both Lightroom (pre-pano stitching) and Photoshop (post-pano stitching) and all together I put about 2.5 hrs of work into this one.

Overall I'm very happy with the way it turned out, although I do wish I had done more to prepare myself, instead of just jumping right into it that night.

The character I'v drawn is Scout. If I'm not mistaken, Scout are something like thief so I drew my character in Thief like or maybe Assassin =.= (Depend on what you think). I Decided to paint them in brown cause thief never wear clothes thats too colorful and obviously they always wear brown~ if you notice in every online game. Also I decide to paint their hair white/grey cause it gives them an evil effect like a killer~ +.+
I drew a double head dagger for the guy in red ( Means Fire I guess) and also a pair of "cool" looking dagger for the girl in blue ( no meaning in particular ---- or water , up to you)

now my artist comment:

So, Ive been a huge fan of Resident Evil since it first came out. I remember being seven years old when my dad bought the first one. Everyday i would be so scared to watch him play it, but couldnt keep my eyes away from all the violence and gore. I remember having dreams of the Tyrant coming after me and me having to find the rocket launcher (which always seemed to be under a bed). Then as the years went by, resident Evil 2 came out (which i can say is my absolute favorite) I loved the way they intertwined the characters and thier relationships. (ANd yes, Sherry is still my favorite character to this day and YES i want to know what happened to her) Then cam Resident Evil 3 "Nemesis" I absolutely loved they way they added the dodge to the game, cus you know back in the older games, once youve been attacked you ARE attacked. Resident Evil Zero, on gamecube utterly blew my mind with how much story there was to be had before the mansion incident it was remarkable and beautiful all at the same time. Getting to know Rebecca Chambers was a really good thing too, because I hadnt really liked her from the first game, except for her one moment of spraying Chris in the face, that was and still is a LAWLACOSTER.

Then Resident Evil 4 came out. I was completely in awe at the change of them dang camera angles and the change from static angles to over the shoulder third person. Capcoms biggest step in the right direction. The only thing i really missed were the zombies, but you know what I got over it!

Last, but definately not least, Resident Evil 5. Bringing back Chris Redfield with more characters and plot. ANd of course the ever evil Wesker. I love the games so much. all of them.

Now came the movies. SOmething a little skewered when it came to comparing to the games, They are a masterpiece in themselves. Im such a devoted fan, it doesnt bother me that it doesnt follow the games plots. Its just another way of storytelling while still having good zombie fun! <3

Heres to the lovely Executioner who I will be seeing in theaters the day he comes out! <3

Thank you Capcom for creating epic games and movies I will always cherish and definately pass to future generations!

The ship is a battleship at 895m lengthwise, a great deal smaller than most Amarrian battleships but still quite bulky. It's symmetrical, except for a few texture details in the prow. It's also heavily armored. Maybe too heavily armored even :/ But then again, this is a royally funded battleship, quite old, and like the Golden and Silver Magnates, they can certainly afford to plate this with gold, can't they? ;D Especially as this came from the height of glory of the Amarrian Empire, just as they were about to engage the Jovians and just as the Matari were starting to rebel.

The ship borrows the aesthetics of Amarrian battlecruiser and cruiser-sized ships, since for a battleship it is actually closer to a battlecruiser in size (remember, the weapon/capacitor nacelles, the 'wings', make up virtually half of its length). It's more appropriate to think of it as a battlecruiser with the ability to mount mega pulse laser turrets really. It's completely covered in armor except for tiny gaps, again, much like smaller class ships. Also heavily ornate, as befitting a ship designed for the exclusive use of a royal family's navy (in this case, one of the richest, most powerful, and most miiltarily leaning of the five - the Sarum Family). This ship actually has alternate colors where it uses silver and and red for some of its plating, but I opted to go with the 'standard' gold plating of the Imperial Navy for the submission. I followed the Amarrian design philosophy of smooth, rounded curves abruptly terminating in wicked sharp points. The shape itself is meant to evoke the image of angels, especially the plating pattern of the sweptback 'wings'. I expect it would look even more angelic once the broadsides start firing, giving the illusion of unfolding 'wings' of deadly laser beams, each the approximate diameter of schoolbuses. LOL

THE TL;DR

Like the Serval, this was also a labor of love. It's completely unwrapped and textured; diffuse, spec, reflection, normals, the whole shebang in 3 2048x map sets. Even places you sadly will never see from the limitations of the submission rules. No tiling textures, minimal reliance on actual geometry to flesh out details. Each individual window, each tiny little panel underneath the armor is painstakingly hand made. No overpainting, except for the thruster glow, it's all textures. Not the slapdash 'make generic details and fit faces over them' kind of textures either, but unwrapped with unique UV's (except where it's mirrored of course).

Though it's a bit easier to unwrap and texture than my other submission, it's not an easy feat either. Note the sheer difference in the untextured mesh and the textured ship. Like the Serval, this is somewhat a meld between the game-art 'optimize everything' discipline and devil-may-care edgeloop high poly modeling approach. I didn't rely too much on actual geometry and chose to detail parts in texture, mostly because I can't render much of anything past the 1 million poly mark, LOL. Texture, sadly, can't be shown in the orthos according to the rules. It does have the advantage though of having far simpler geometry (and thus easier to follow) while still maintaining the illusion of greater detail in its final form. Pretty much like how game engines actually do it anyway. I also detailed with function in mind. Not complexity for the sake of complexity.

Total creation time, along with my other submission, the Matari Serval Battlecruiser (and including concepting, modeling, unwrapping, texturing, creating the art and write-ups for the submission forms, interruptions, googling close-up references of existing ships, breaks, hours of staring at the screen wondering if I should make it like this or like that or if it was all worth it, two other ships started and abandoned along the way, redoing things and redoing them again, and that annoying thing called real life) is about three weeks.

Splice - Subject 13

Since I love creating creatures I decided to do another entry for the Splice: Create A Creature Contest. I decided just to show my traditional skills for the picture. Since I suck at CGing and coloring altogether.
This lovely guy is a mix between a wolf, tiger, cockatoo, and yellow jacket. Yeah, I fail...

This is a musical instrument. It creates the audible wave forms that excite the cochlear area of the ear canal. This is done through a method of steam transferrance and liquid compression. If I were to say it was a type of music Baroque would spring to mind, because that is the music of our time I most enjoy. Although because the device can and will be used for all sorts of music including some very risqué chamber-music or even Ragtime (gasp), that is of course up to the operator...

NOELLE IN WONDERLAND

_{This is my entry for the Picture Yourself in Wonderland contest. I found out about it a week ago and finally decided to go ahead and participate. In the beginning I was hesitant, intimidated by all the wonderful illustrations and photographs, but chose to make an effort despite my doubts. I highly believe I will not make into the top twenty-five, however I am glad I tried and I am proud of the result that equated from all my hard work.

Its supposed to be me as Alice, although I admit the young woman in the image doesnt have much of a resemblance to me besides blonde hair and blue eyes; I opted to not include my glasses only because I was too lazy to draw them. The dress design is not my own, but was referenced from a poster picturing Tim Burtons Alice; I made a few modifications to the outfit because I couldnt find a picture large enough to make out all the details. In all honesty, the dress is my favorite element of the illustration because I experimented with shading folds

The pearls and stars were components I borrowed from two old sketches of mine. While inking the pearls I messed up and caused a few of them to look deformed and I attempted my very best to draw decent stars; I was never good at them After reading Dengeki Daisy I wanted to draw daisies and added them in for effect; they are my favorite next to the dress. I had the most enjoyable time while drawing and coloring in the flowers. Theyre supposed to be white and I thought a blue shadow would be a lot more interesting than grey However, I noticed I did not add any petals to the stems

The rainbow is an absolute disaster! I started from top to bottom and made the violet, indigo, and blue stripes too big; I had to make the red, orange, and yellow sections smaller to fit them in. Its my least favorite part and I hate looking at it. I wanted really bad to give-up, but I urged myself forward and in order to do so I completely disregarded its presence.

As for the moon and clouds, the scanner destroyed the colors. Actually the scanner destroyed ALL of the colors They all came out too bright and grainy, dulling the nice concentrated shading I had going on.

To add effect to the image I added the plaid background and light texture in GIMP.

I wrote the above last weekend when I tried to upload my entry, but it wouldn't. Now I feel I could have tried a lot harder and added more detail. I think my inking and coloring are sloppy as well

Since the computer wont let me upload it at its full size I had to shrink it Ill try and get a larger version up soon.

FEZ Contest Entry: Warrior

I name him: Blade-Brush Monk Warrior (in oni tattoo armour)

I checked the two-handed weapon skills and the brush being edge-less should still be compatible with all the skills (mostly AoE skills).

No extra rigging/animation required as long as the main curvature of the brush is always facing the enemy.

2 entries, my thumb is dying, but I do want to try for 3, I really do >_<
