And lastly, to contrast from all other promotional material for the game, I chose not to feature the Lancer or Retro Lancer as the star weapon. The Longshot has always been a fan favorite and I think it needs some love.

I am very proud of this piece seeing how I went through all kinds of mess to get it done in time. Several computer crashes, working everyday till the contest deadline and worst of all, forcing myself not to play Gears 3 until after I finished. So yeah super looking forward to that.

I noticed in a lot of the concept art for the videogame the lighting was very cohesive for the characters, using lots of blues and purples. When approaching this piece I wanted to create something that seemed it belonged in the Gears art world. At first it was very hard to find good reference for the character and monster. Luckily, the game came out on the 20th and I was finally able to find good reference to Anya's back apparatus. Thank god cause it looked like a turtle shell at first!
My favorite parts of the piece are the drool and blood, especially the cuts on Anya. I noticed she has a couple of bandaids on her right arm, so I created some nasty scratches to kind of explain why she may have those bandages. (Not sure if there's a real reason in the storyline or not but I guess I just took some artistic liberties.) Overall I'm really happy with the piece. My husband, Marcus, thinks it's my best yet, so we'll see how the crowd responds!

Alright, after a month of working on this EVERY SINGLE DAY, I can finally relax.

I liked the challenge.

The piece was done entirely from scratch

So, as far as 'capturing the essence of the game' goes

I didn't want to draw the usual battle scene since there is also the other (civil) war going on beneath the surface, and put the locust in between the two enemies.

It was tricky to make a nice division that could show 3 sides fighting for the surface world, I admit. But I'm happy with the final result. ]]>

Anya just got herself a Kantus with her Retro just before he threw an Incendiary and/or frag (lol I know you can't carry both at once... but Kantus broke that rule and got owned.)
And a ticker just popped in behind Anya, ready to esplode.
Baird has himself the One-Shot Sniper,
Carmine just found some COG tags while seemingly unaware of the Locust horde approaching behind him,
Cole is about to win a Lancer chainsaw battle,
Sam picked up a Torque Bow from a Locust someone destroyed and is getting ready to blow up some Lambent,
Jace is shooting at the Digger Launcher Locust dude who is getting ready to reload his gun with another Digger bullet... and then there's the Locust/Lambent battle in the far background.

I wanted to create a follow-on image from the original poster. A 'later-in-the-day' version, when things have turned sour and that Fan has seen some heavy action.

Also wanted to focus more on the grittiness and bleakness of the War & the World. Was thinking of epic last stands and fights-against-the-odds.

The 4 main figures stayed pretty much the sme from the original sketch but the two ladies went through a number of pose edits. I did a version with one of them getting shot/wouned with some blood spatter but decided to edit it for the contest. The flag bearer was originally looking backwards towards the nuclear explosion but as this was thier last stand I wanted her more involved. In the end they are all focused on thier Nemesis who lurks just off camera.

My most complex piece to date and I feel that I did achieve what I was aiming for. Will probably do some minor tweaking and balancing once I have a few days break from it.

Great experience and very happy to have been a part of the contest. Thanks to all the folks involved in hosting the event!
