My entry to the Dark Shadows contest. Just under the wire.

This is actually my first time entering a dA contest! I definitely don't expect to place or anything, it was fun to do and right up my alley. Digital painting done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom tablet. Good luck to everyone who also submitted!

EDIT 4/28/12 - I appreciate all your indignant comments about how I didn't make the semi-finals, but I actually am NOT eligible to place as a deviantART Community Volunteer, so there's no need for any of that! Barnabas Collins in an art nouveau style, surrounded by elements from his character and the movie.

Took about 10 hours from start to finish, 100% Photoshop. I tried to use minimal colors, as I usually do t-shirt designs which requires that, so I only used 6 colors, the gradients can be half-toned. I'm pretty happy with the end results, what do you think? Please leave a comment/critique, thanks!

With a little bit of photo-manipulation and a lot of digital painting, Barnabas Collins is now ready for his close-up.

EDIT: in case anyone is interested in what my process was like, here is a run-down of it:

-First I made a list of things that I want going on in my image.
-Then I made sketches of different poses and directions I could have the character go in and made tiny value thumbnails of the whole composition in pencil. [and picked which I liked best]
-I took the two reference images I needed from the asset pack into PhotoshopCS5, then liquified, warped, and re-painted certain areas until they matched my sketches.
-Converted everything into black and white.
-Used various Photoshop brushes and painted everything on new separated layers for easier access and editing. [also referred back to the ref of J.Depp to make sure there was a likeness, as well as referred to myself in various lighting conditions to get things consistent]---This is the part that took the longest, I made such tiny strokes!
-Went through various background and border ideas, until I settled with this one.
-And lastly colored! Made a new layer and set it to color. Played around until it was where I wanted, and Bam! Finished~

I still can't believe TIM BURTON will see this, even if I don't get chosen as one of the 3, This is still one of the most amazing moments of my life! I am truly TRULY thankful!! My heart is overloaded with joy right now! :') THANK YOU!

So here it is finally, it took me awhile but this is my entry for the Dark Shadows: The Barnabas Portrait Project Contest.

My Thoughts
When I first saw this contest notification in my inbox, I was ecstatic because now I had an excuse to paint Johnny Depp. Johnny looks absolutely amazing as Barnabas, and the hair, makeup, and costume design is just brilliant. Like all Tim Burton films, Ill be at the theater bright and early on the first day because Im excited to see it.

Not only that, but the fact that Tim Burtons involved with the judging made me so incredibly happy. It would be quite the honor for him to view my work because I have admired him since I was very young. For me its a way to give back to a favorite creator and visionary that has inspired me throughout my life.

Inspiration
After I finished thoroughly reading over all the fine print, I already knew the direction I wanted to take. I was going to create the portrait as if I was thee portrait painter myself. That meant oil on canvas/panel, or at least the simulation of such. So I envisioned myself sitting down with Barnabas at his Manor as his own privately commissioned painter.

Recently I had the privilege of visiting The Haunted Mansion at Disney World, so I had the wonderfully eerie Victorian portraits still on the brain. I decided that it would be fitting to pay homage to young Master Gracey himself and pose Johnny in a similar way. Proud and tall, sitting with his left hand on his chest, but still a bit of a smug grumpy pants. The way that Johnny frowns is amusing; therefore I knew that part of his character had to be captured. I also drew inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age of painting, Rembrandt being my main influence. His beautiful self portrait Portrait of Rembrandt with Gorget had a similar color palette (depending on the photograph) as the film. So my painting reflected that and consisted of an array of pale desaturated greens and golds, complemented by vivid pops of red and deep navy blue. Like Rembrandt, I also wanted to render an affective chiaroscuro, not only because it's visual appealing but it's symbolic of Barnabas struggle with light and dark.

Technique
Painted in Photoshop with a Wacom in 18 hours over a 3 day period; all on one layer to help simulate real oil painting. I used the Standard Portrait Template (3125 x 2500), Fine Art brushes from my collection to create the texture and look of real paint, along with the grid method pioneered by Renaissances Masters to help keep proportions accurate.

I thought to myself. What if I Barnabas was posing for another portrait? I thought it would be clever to have an artist painting him in front of the portrait of himself? Well from what I've seen, the portrait behind him looks like the actor from the old TV series!

All that said. I think it was a better idea than just redoing a portrait of him. I'm not much of a portrait type when it comes to using required content. :<

I'm afraid to say my technical skills still lack luster. but I'm sure after my hand heals I'll be back to my usual tedious detail.

Edit: Made a lot of changes and added a lot more detail. (especially in Barnabas' face) Seeing how well some of you are doing I feel the need to up the work. Plus my hand is recovering well.

My Thoughts:
Potrait drawing has been my main passion as an graphite pencil artist. When I first heard of the contest, I couldn't hold in my excitement for entry. However, there are challenges.

Drawing with pencils really takes time and the contest only provides less than 14 days for completion. With my normal daily routine, it's nearly impossible to finish a quality piece on time. Well, never say never.

Coincidentally, I took my entire week off work due to my recent car accident. With my car being repaired in the shop, I had nowhere to go but focused on the drawing. The repair cost me nearly $3200 out of my own pocket and my insurrance company didn't cover the repair.....Long story short, I was so determined to win this contest.

Despite the extra free time, completing the entire piece is still a big push. I chose the biggest paper possible for best possible detail. This is my first and most ambitious attempt to finish a 14x17 portrait in full detail because I don't usually include background in my portraits (see my gallery).

This pose of Johnny was found in the one of the two posters inside the asset pack provided by the contest. For the background, I got inspiration after viewing the official movie trailer. Composition wise, I believe it shows the characteristics of Barnabas Collins. The background was drawn in simple sketchy fashion so it won't be too distracting yet it still tells the story well. Some of you might have found the background interesting. Leave me a comment if you've found the dragon inside the drawing .

Here is my entry for the Dark Shadows competition! I am very pleased with how it turned out. Even though the film takes place in the 70's, what I've always loved about Tim Burton's works is the Victorian aesthetic that they have, so I chose to run with that. The title of this piece is a quote from the trailer. I was really excited to participate in this because I've always loved the dark, whimsical nature of Burton's work. Well, I guess all that's left to say is "enjoy!" and make sure to take a look at the other entries, too! There's some super awesome work out there.

Edits 4/23: Lots of edits today!! I'm just making sure it's 100% done and that I'm completely satisfied before the contest ends tomorrow. I added much more detail to his face and hands and fixed a few things that looked weird. I added more sponge brushwork and detail to the background to give it a painterly look, incorporated some red, and added a few Burton-esque environmental elements, such as the curly tree branches, that I've always adored. I also attempted to make Barnabas look more like Johnny Depp. I made the wine glass more realistic and gave it a crack (I mean, he can't expect the stemware to have aged as well as he did!) Lastly, I added a Black Widow spider on his hand, and some cobwebs in the corners both to give the piece some boundaries and to connect the logo more to the image. I sincerely hope you enjoy it!! I'm much happier with it now.

Edit: I would like to thank everyone who has viewed, commented on, and added this piece to their favorites or collections so much! I'm not what you would call a "famous" deviant, so the attention that you guys have given to this is both surprising and heart-warming to me. Thanks for all of your support!!

A lot of people are saying they have always been so inspired by Tim Burton or a huge fan or Johnny Depp. Obviously I am no different. However, what I admire most is not the acting, or the career, or the movies (while those are all fantastic) it is their view of life and their personality that is what I find so fascinating.

I have spent a lot of time looking through the entries and noticed a lot of them (while some better than others and quite skillfully done) look very similar. It is the same pose or the same technique, or a lot of people claiming they painted something when I can see the smudge tool's ugly mark with pixelation of an image behind it.

I am hoping my style comes off as original and different enough that it stands out above others. Winning this contest would mean a lot for me (not just because Tim Burton would see it because yes, that is very much amazing and I would be honored), but I am engaged and my fiance and I are paying for the wedding ourselves. Every dime won would go directly to that. We do not have a lot of money, but want our day to be very special and represent us. We want it to be as unique as we are, the same way Tim Burton and Johnny Depp show their uniqueness every day.

This is my entry for the Dark Shadows contest. I don't normally do portraits, it's one of my weakest areas. This was a good excuse to practice some portraiture. Plus the chance of Tim Burton judging my piece is priceless. About half of my time was spent on the faces, and I still feel I haven't got them quite right. I guess that's what I get for not choosing an existing pose to paint from. I spent a lot of time on their eyes. They both have an intense stare that I wanted to capture.

I never really watched the series. I was still a little kid when I came across it, and at that time I found the series very slow with too much drama. I'm glad the movie is going in a different direction.

Edit: since I have a couple more days until the deadline I think I'll work on it more, there are some things that are bothering me.

Update: I spent all night redoing both faces. As well as some other small things. I had to put a band-aid on my finger because a blister was forming where the wacom pen resting. I very happy with the result and glad I went back to fix their faces. I think this is the final version but there's still 2 day left and I may find something else that bothers me.

for the Dark Shadows Contest even though I really didn't have time to put something good together I couldn't sleep last night so figured i would give this a whirl.

Used the screenshot right after the disco ball fell as reference and the screenshot of him before his dark days for inspiration and reference on the coat (I love that outfit!) as well as old oil portraits to get a feel of the era he came from though I guess he would have had to commission an artist in present day to paint him as a vamp.

i realize he's not a dead ringer for jd but it felt more natural this way

I wasnt going to enter, my track record for these deviantart contest is nothing to brag about. (0/25). But a very good friend of mine recently gave me a bunch of her old art supplies, and i just had to use them!!

Tim Burton Dark Shadows Portrait of Johnny Depp as Barnabus Collins

When I was a kid, I watched Dark Shadows on syndication in the early 80s. Long before I had any art history education in college, or before I knew even what portrait art entailed, I always admired the Barnabas's portrait from the TV show. As a young aspiring artist, that portrait always impressed me.

When I created this version I wanted to keep that classic spirit alive - to create a real, painted portrait using the same dramatic, romantic style I am known for.

Here's my entry for the contest.

I did a quick pencil sketch to establish the composition and the likenesses. The sketches were scanned and the painting was done using Photoshop CS5 and a Wacom tablet.

Took about 6 hours from start to finish.

Had a lot of fun working on this. I have a strange connection to Dark Shadows. My first professional job as an artist was at a NYC art studio. One of the artists there was Ken Bald. He was the artist who did all the Dark Shadows newspaper comic strips. I learned a lot from him as an artist and a person. He's a perfect gentleman and a real pro. I look back on those days fondly.

Anyway, hope you enjoy my effort. I'm digging a lot of the other entries and wish you all good luck.

My entry for the Dark Shadows contest: A portrait of the vampire Barnabas as portrayed by Johnny Depp in the upcoming Tim Burton film. Done in a somewhat neoclassical style mixed with a heavy dose of Rembrandt. Didn't have a lot of time on this one and the style is a completely new experiment, but I really had some fun with it.

This is of course is Johnny Depp as Barnabas of the new Tim Burton film Dark Shadows.
He was drawn with red, and black fine and ultra fine and large sharpie marker....on light pink heavy card stock paper to stop the sharpie bleed..
Im so happy to be able to submit my drawings to this very cool contest..There are so many wonderful artists who have submitted such great works of art..Good luck to you all..

Barnabas Collins: [drools at the "blood" inside] Aaahhhh...

I made his eyes red for the obvious reason the hunger of blood that he is craving. I felt it would stand out and make an impact. I loved this expression and couldn't resist. I previously started this a few days before I found out about the contest. When I found out, my jaw dropped hitting my table and then I couldn't sit still for a hour or so.

Inspiration I used while working on this, I listened to alot of Danny Elfman music. I listened to the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack the most. Music really helps with concentration but what other way for this piece than to listen to some Elfman music.

Helped me with the template, if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have been able to submit this to the contest.

What Sorcery Is This

Hello!

When I saw the contest for Dark Shadows pop up in my message folder I was pretty excited by it. I've never really done an online contest before and this one seemed like the perfect one for me.

I thought it would be cool to not only do Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, but also pay homage to Ben Cross and Jonathan Frid's interpretations of the character. Then we get to see how over the years Barnabas has sort of changed but also the quintessential things that still make him Barnabas. I also wanted to have some kind of story for the picture that was weird and humorous. No matter what year Barnabas wakes up in, he will never quite understand that lava lamps are not filled with big globs of blood.

This took the better part of a week to make. It was all done in PS CS3 with the natural brushes set. There's quite a bit of detail in there so feel free to take a close look at it all.

Whew! Well here's my first entry. I contemplated doing this digitally but I've had so much fun with my Copic markers recently that I decided to just do the entire thing traditionally.

Also, I wanted to modernize him as suggested but didn't want to overdo it with too many elements so I decided that the lone smiley face- a popular icon from the 70's- would be the perfect fit to counteract the moody demeanor of the piece (Plus, it's funny!)

I still might send another entry in with a dash more color but I also really like the contrast between the drab grey tones and the bright yellow of the 70's Smiley Face button.

Okay, so when I found out about this contest I just about passed out from excitement. Tim Burton judging my artwork? The chance to draw something for him?? To finally get my chance to have him see my work and for me to pay tribute to his awesomeness, even if only a small way...

!! Seriously, my fiance had to make sure I was still breathing...

I love Tim Burton. No, no that isn't even cover half of it -- I hold this man up on a shiny gothic pedestal as the pinnacle of my animation-wannabe career. I LOVE HIM!

He is my idol, my inspiration, the light at the end of my fuzzy little tunnel...I absolutely love every single thing he has ever produced. I'm not even exaggerating -- there is not one thing he has done in his lengthy career that I don't love. He has served as an inspiration to me over the years and it has always been my most fondest dream to one day work with him as an animator *squeals*

He is the reason I have been training to BECOME an animator all this time! To even have an ounce of the charisma and talent of this man...oh boy, I would just die!

Nightmare Before Christmas is my favorite ^_^. I love claymation and have made two shorts myself, following in the great Tim Burton's footsteps. But shhh, back to Dark Shadows...

Anyway, so when I finally was able to breathe again I decided that I wanted to paint something which channeled all his quirky, gothic, fun halloweeny style...something that really put all my personality (all his personality, really *sigh*) into it, and so I came up with this.

Barnabas born of little spidery ink tendrils, splatters of paint, shifting shadows and mismatched patches of darkness, and a touch of color, just a touch, right in the center of his heart (medallion ) as he acclimates himself to the 20th century. It's gothic, it's dark, it's quirky, it's bold, it's everything I know his work to be.

This is my tribute to Tim in all his glory. I really hope he likes it

Edward Scissorhands, as I always think of Johnny no matter what he does ^_^, looking stylish in his frock coat...a monochromatic man in a colorful world ^_^

Graphite, Watercolor, Oil, & Photography pieced together in Photoshop CS2.

The wings were made out of twigs which were tied together with jute twine.

I should have just painted this on a canvas but, I haven't tinkered with Photoshop in a long time & I need the practice.

Dark Shadows

This is my portrait for the Dark Shadows contest. The image was taken from the official asset pack with some minor cropping, converted it to black and white with some tweaks, applied filters as well as other techniques to bring out the detail and to make it look older. Also did some minor work on the logo and some other minor effects to make the image pop.

P.S.S If you do not think much work was done compare this one and the official one side by side and you will see a major difference. Like I said above the main change is in the detail of the people and the objects as the main poster looked really smooth and flat.

Dark Shadows takes me way back... I can still remember watching some original episodes...eek, yep I'm that old...

I watched the trailer on YouTube...I was amazed that it was a comedy set in the 70's, but of course it's a Tim Burton creation. I look forward to seeing it.

Here is my entry for the Dark Shadows contest Glad I pulled off getting it done in time, started it last Friday Night.. I drew it over Photoshop with my tablet and didn't really sleep since I started it..

Had to enter the Dark Shadows contest, love the series... My sister never got the chance to see the original series, and I always loved it. so since last year we have been marathoning it.. Just made it past 600 episodes last night.

Really looking forward to the new movie.

Digital painting done in Adobe PS. Photos were used solely for referencing, there's no paintover or photo texturing. Brushes are either default basic ones or those created by me.

I wasn't sure how much of an updated look was required, so I decided to make something in between old and new. He's wearing 1970s attire (the shirt's collar is particularly obvious ), but I tried to make it look like his style - dark, gothic and classy. Anyway, he's supposedly sitting, that's why the cane seems so tall. I painted the chair, too, but it kinda broke the composition, so I left it out in the end.

The Man, The Beast

A few things that inspired this:

Dorian Gray - immortal and unaging man; while he remained perfect, his portrait deteriorated; if he ever looked at the painting, he would waste away, while the painting took back his health

Beauty and the Beast - Who could forget the torn portrait of the beast in the West Wing? He wanted to forget what he was because he thought he'd never be seen like that again.

So... I guess this image would show both sides of Barnabas and how time affected him - both physically and mentally.

I used a picture from Sleepy Hollow when trying to figure out the pose.
