Not my usual kind of stuff, but why not.
Story: After the WW3 bombings, atomic winter has set in. Nobody knows the proportions of the disaster, yet some rumours say that not very far there are lands which haven't been afflicted so badly. Using steam power, an engineer transformed his former family home into a lucrative(albeit slightly dubious) business, the Code Red Inn, offering a last stop for those who venture into the dangerous area beyond it.

I used the house as a base, the rest is painted.

Edit: i replaced the file with another that has been cropped a bit to fit the aspect ratio rule, which i somehow missed.

Grimm's Fairytales #1 - Little Red Riding Hood

I'm currently working on a big project called "Die Märchenbande" ("The Fairytale Gang") that interprets Grimm's Fairy Tales in a modernized fantasy-like style. My client is making a series of pop music CDs and books that use these illustrations.

You probably know Little Red Riding Hood, and all the others already

A LOT more fairy tale illustrations are going to follow in the future.

Book Spirit Hiramori

I wasn't that active recently. I'm sorry >_<
I've got a very big serious commission and I was working a lot on it + I had a nice trip to Italy, but it deserves at least a journal entry and new ID! So stay tuned.
Ahh.. Almost forgot.. This is a guardian book spirit Hiramori Just another crazy idea turned to life. She's not that perfect,but I'm glad to paint something for myself after a long break.
For the book I took some old romantic poetry,but don't try to read it - it's just a texture - romance is not in favor in our tough artistic life hhhhh

both pictures were drawn on Photoshop CS3 with a Genius Mousepen 6x8 inch i608 tablet (I also have a Wacom Bamboo but I prefer to use the Genius lol)

EDIT:
I've had a lot of people asking about what I did to improve, so i'll post my answer here instead of replying to each individual query:

The main method I recommend is practice, practice, practice! I know it sounds boring and cliche, but improvement doesn't happen overnight ;u; ultimately your drive and the amount of time you spend drawing will determine how much you improve. _{_{so try not to spend too much time watching tv/browsing the internet/socializing, and focus more time on drawing!}}

There are many tutorials I have read and tried out, but the ones that I learned the most from are probably:

1. [link] (having a basic colouring process, eg. starting with lineart -> adding base colours -> adding shadows on the skin -> colouring the eyes -> adding shadows to the hair -> etc.) Learning how to have a basic colouring process has certainly helped me to get a bit more 'organized' when I add colours to a sketch. There are also a lot of technical things i've learned from this tutorial too, such as colouring the 'whites' of people's eyes with grey, where the basic shadows on the face lie (under the eyebrows/around the eyes, under the nose, the cheeks, and under the mouth), how to add more detail to hair, and most importantly, that hair on the head has a parting! _{unless the person you're drawing has their hair slicked back}

2. [link] (colour theory) I used to have no idea about colour complements, and I always used to use saturated colours (such as in the 2010 picture above), and therefore I wasn't able to decide on a unified colour palette/theme (bright red, bright blue, and cream splashed throughout the ENTIRE picture? ), whereas in the 2012 picture, the majority of the picture is blue, whilst there is only a small area of bright red (the flower), and the red in her dress, which was originally too saturated, has been toned down so it doesn't compete with the bright blue in the other areas of the picture, and also to stop her from looking like a giant tomato.

3. [link] (colouring process) I used this tutorial quite a lot when I was getting started with digital art, and it's definitely the one that taught me the most about where shadows on the face/neck area should lie :>

I would also suggest picking out a wide range of artists that you like who produce art at a consistent level, and just stare at their art for hours and hours to see what it is about their art that you like, eg. observing how they colour skin; do they use saturated colours? do they add texture to the skin? how dramatic are the shadows on the face? how are the eyes/nose/mouth all placed on the face in relation to each other? do they use smooth or rough brushstrokes? I recommend a large variety of artists, because it's easy to become so captivated by one or two people's work that you just end up copying their style which is NOTT a good thing! >w<

TL;DR EXPLANATION: look at your favourite artist's works for inspiration, and PRACTICE whenever you can!

Tudor Queens 7 - The Lady Mary

(This is a 16th century poem I found in Carolly Erickson's biography "Bloody Mary". Walsingham is an English pilgrimage site that was destroyed during the Reformation. The poem reflects the feelings of the Catholic people of that time, and perhaps also what Mary thought.)

Miladies and gentlemen, I present you "Bloody Mary"! My 7th portrait in my series of Tudor Queens.

Born in 1516 as daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Mary Tudor was raised to become Queen of England, just in case. Henry's male heirs indeed were short-lived, and his son Edward, after having ruled as Protestant king, died aged fifteen in 1553. Now it was Mary's turn and she became Queen the same year, at the age of 37. She was a devout Catholic and believed it was her mission to restore England to Catholicism. Which of course was pretty much impossible - one can't stop history once it has started. Until her death in 1558, about 280 Protestant "heretics" were condemned to death. (Source: Wikipedia)

There are several portraits of Mary dating from her time, of which the best known probably are these:

As you can see I chose to paint her wearing the dress from the earlier painting when she wasn't Queen yet, simply because I like it more
I'm still wondering about her eyebrows or lack thereof. Was there a fashion of plucking them out, or did Mary have some nutritional deficiency?

Like some symbolism with that painting? Here goes: The statuette of the Virgin Mary in the background is her name patron, obviously, and the blood red color of the tapestry also was a conscious choice.

Painting the Roses Red

This is an update of an older image that I just HAD to redo ... I cringed inside when I looked at it - so it needed work - and here it is! Now I dont cringe!

A take on a younger Red Queen who loses it (be it from the pressure, all the power or wateva), and so starts painting the roses red... with blood... Mwahahahahaaaa!

The image and title was inspired by the song sung by the cards in a scene from the 1951 "Alice in Wonderland" by Walt Disney.

Lyrics:
"We're Painting the Roses Red ~ We dare not stop, or waste a drop. So let the paint be spread, we're painting the roses red! And many a tear we shed! Because we know they'll cease to grow, in fact they'll soon be dead. Yet we go ahead painting the roses red! We planted the white roses by mistake, and the queen she likes them red. If she saw white instead, she'd raise a fuss! And each of us, would quickly lose his head. Since this is the thought we dread, we're painting the roses red!"

When I saw there was a DA 'draw this again' contest I got inspired to remake a drawing I made 7 years ago for a friend [link]. Since then I got a nice tablet, became a DA member and saw a lot of tutorials. This really helped me develop my skills. I hope I'll keep on improving.

Heyy!

Woow... this was probably the most time-consuming project I ever did. But at the same time it was soo much fun and I realized how much I missed doing pieces of handicraft! (Which I used to do A LOT when I was younger.. ^^) This took about 35+ hrs in total, all the detail was killing me! xD But I am really happy with the result, it looks much better in reality, but I hope the photos portrait my idea and concept in a good way! ^^

About the idea for the diorama:

When I think of autumn the first thing, that comes to my mind, is that dreamy atmosphere autumn brings along. I love the feeling of sitting in a park and just enjoying the beautiful colorful trees and the rays of sun bathing the whole scenery in twilight. And the best thing is, if you can enjoy this atmosphere with a person you love, may it be a friend, a family member or your lover! ^^ People (and also animals ) seem to get closer together, as it gets colder outside. That's what the two people on the bench and also the fawn and it's mother are standing for. I also really love pavillons, they have that special kinda romantic appeal! So I placed the scene in one! I hope I succeeded in catching what autumn means and what it feels like for me! ^^

Techniqual stuff:

The shoebox measures 23cm x 34cm and is 13cm high (+ 13cm archway, so 26cm in total). It consists of solid carton.
The following materials were used for the other items in the box:
Trees, bushes: Artificial moss (it doesn't rot), wire, goldspray
Bench: Solid stalks of straw, wire
Persons, animals, kite, pavillon: Solid black carton, transparent yellow paper
Underground: cut foam, synthetic turf glued on it (like used on model railways)
Little details (flowers, latern, mushroom, leaves etc.): Different materials

Everything is handcrafted except the little mushroom, the little leaves on the ground are also bought, but I painted them red and brown to fit the autumn-theme. The little chestnuts are made of styrofoam painted with brown watercolors. Everything is glued/fixed with wire, so its safe for transport!

I am reeally excited how you like my diorama (or Dreamiorama xD).. I went to soo many different stores to get all the stuff and I spent so much work to get this done while also having an eye on my little daughter (she tried to destroy the diorama several times... haha ^^). I really hope all the work was worth it, if I won something, I would probably freak out..

You slip the soft purple deerskin case from the bag. Inside you feel the lightweight traveling size book. It is neatly wrapped in the waterproof leather. It is held closed with a stunning amethyst clasp with a silver unicorn buckle. Loosening the buckle, you allow the case to fall from the beautiful book.

The book is a fine and well-crafted. Bound in gleaming white leather and adorned with a silver unicorn on the cover, it displays the script "Tirael Nimara" in the delicate script of the elves. You softly open the book, inside, you see the perfect, measured writing of a trained hand. Soon, you begin to read.......

Light. Blindness. Soon, the light spreads its wings from my sight and I find myself in strange yet beautiful surroundings. I am pale and nude, wavering in a moonlight path, open only on one end. I feel as though I am only a simple observer in my own body. To either side of the path, lies thick tangled bramble and huge darkened trees. Farther down the wandering path is a large open area filled with pale moonlight which is guarded by a unicorn archway.

On either side of the opening rear two unicorn stallions crafted of white marble. They have delicately crafted marble wings lifted and spread to make an archway into the glade. Their alicorns are crossed and are balancing a pentagram between the horns points. I feel so safe and serene that I am aghast with joy.

I pass under the shelter of the unicorns arch. Inside the magnificent glade I gasp in joy. Ethereal light, pale and multihued, dances in the huge spreading treetops above. The sound of tumbling water tickles my ears. I smell the joyous scent of flowers. I know despite my nudity, I can feel no vulnerability in this place. There are motes of light in all different colors, lights and shades that dart and dance within my reach. Purple, blue, black and red flowers of all hues glow from the ground, bushes and trees.

The peacefulness of this realm permeates me. I walk over to the tumbling water fall. I see it is pouring into a clear, sparkling lake. The bushes are laden with many colored flowers that hug the sides of the water. Lichen and mosses drip from the overhanging tress and willows, their trailings dancing long the surface of water.

Inside the water, tiny multicolored fish, frogs, lizards and fairies dart for deeper water. The water ripples to the other side. A flash of light draws my attention. I stare in awe as I see a shimmering white unicorn walk from the brush. She doesnt seem to acknowledge me. She walks into the water, her body moving into the lake. She stops. She lowers the shining horn into the water and it begins to ripple as silver streaks stream from her horn.

It is a great mare with a flowing silver-blue mane, glistening violet horn and sharp cloven hooves. She was more beautiful than any other horse I had ever seen. From her back were shining iridescent wings. Each feather looked like spun silver, it was so delicate and perfect. It was wonderful. I was so happy! Then she approached me. It moved its wings over my back, hugging me. It was so splendid! Then it told me that I would always be one with Unicorn.

Then the unicorn lowered her sharp horn to my heart and she pressed the sparkling shaft to me. I felt the most powerful energy flow into me. I gasped in pleasure as the power coursed and doubled into my body. I could barely maintain my balance. Suddenly, the unicorn took a step back.

Then she rose a little, drawing the alicorn to my forehead. I gasped at the exquisite rippling of pleasure bursting within. Then she drew herself back. Spiraling from where my forehead was touched by her horn, my own horn grew in response!!! I was shocked and could do no more than stand there still as a statue. Suddenly the unicorn flared out her wings and the tips of her feathers tingled along my back. My spine flared with energy. She moved her wings away from my back. Pleasure streamed from me as my own feathers were following his! I had wings!! Oh my Unicorn!

She then took a step back. I was in shock! Here I stood with my own shining white-violet horn. My own wings spread out beside me! It was so amazing. Then the unicorn looked down at me. She softly said I am with you. You can always call upon me and my allies for help and guidance. You should always look to us for help. The unicorn took a step back and she trumpeted a great whinny that echoed for miles.

From all areas I saw a menagerie of horses, unicorns, deer, elk, dogs, cats, pegasi and more animals than I could possibly name or know. The area was filled with their energy. A glowing blue light filled the area and I knewfor oncethat the blessings of the unicorn were with me.

When I awoke I still felt the power of the animals surging within me. I know that the Unicorn was blessing me because of the crystalline, milky violet horn on my forehead and the tumbling white hair. My hair had quite literally turned white!

Year Completed: 2009 (Pencil sketch done in 2006)
Time it Took: Pencil took several hours, I think three or four devoted hours then a few scattered throughout.

Original Size: 8x10Inches (YES IT IS VERY SMALL, I regret this, because the unicorn and moon dominate the entire piece of paper. As it was, It was a lot of detail for so small an area. And Abathia, as a unicorn, was not made to regret, so she doesn't mind the small format *hehe, dorky Last Unicorn joke*)

Notes: I wanted a good picture for a role playing game god. I use her in D&D.

OK. So, this is a colored version of [link] that has been completed. Hehe. You know, I only sign a piece I feel is completely and utterly finished. This piece was laying around unsigned for years. I knew I wanted to do the back wing, but I never throught I was ready. My coloring skills have pretty much been to build up to this one.

Drawn in pencil, here is the WIP Pencil sketch: [link] and I then colored it in prismacolor marker and pencil. The markers gave a really soft watercolored effect and the pencil really makes the picture "pop" I got the purplish prismatic color by layering colors then going over the whole thing with a white colored pencil. No marker was used on Abathia herself, only on the background.

This is a redo of a school assignment from a while back.

The old drawing was my most favorite because my teachers loved it so much the even posted it in the main hall for everyone to see even later I had some work published in the yearbook! I even had some friends were asking for my autograph because they knew I would become something great!

Needless to say that made me so happy I felt like I needed to continue to draw I always loved it and had to keep going ...so I did and never gave up....

A study sculpted in polymer clay, about 10" high from finger to knuckle. I had an ominous maternal Grandmother, who kept a red-handled fireman's ax by her bed, as well as an ice-pick, brick and hammer. My artist mother dreamt of her in the form of a grappling white octopus, which was perfect after the way of dreams. Old age and dissolution, combined with Grandma's innate power, unsettled. As a ghost, I see her swim through air as through abyssal waters. I aim to explore this critter further!

So here it is finally, it took me awhile but this is my entry for the Dark Shadows: The Barnabas Portrait Project Contest.

My Thoughts
When I first saw this contest notification in my inbox, I was ecstatic because now I had an excuse to paint Johnny Depp. Johnny looks absolutely amazing as Barnabas, and the hair, makeup, and costume design is just brilliant. Like all Tim Burton films, Ill be at the theater bright and early on the first day because Im excited to see it.

Not only that, but the fact that Tim Burtons involved with the judging made me so incredibly happy. It would be quite the honor for him to view my work because I have admired him since I was very young. For me its a way to give back to a favorite creator and visionary that has inspired me throughout my life.

Inspiration
After I finished thoroughly reading over all the fine print, I already knew the direction I wanted to take. I was going to create the portrait as if I was thee portrait painter myself. That meant oil on canvas/panel, or at least the simulation of such. So I envisioned myself sitting down with Barnabas at his Manor as his own privately commissioned painter.

Recently I had the privilege of visiting The Haunted Mansion at Disney World, so I had the wonderfully eerie Victorian portraits still on the brain. I decided that it would be fitting to pay homage to young Master Gracey himself and pose Johnny in a similar way. Proud and tall, sitting with his left hand on his chest, but still a bit of a smug grumpy pants. The way that Johnny frowns is amusing; therefore I knew that part of his character had to be captured. I also drew inspiration from the Dutch Golden Age of painting, Rembrandt being my main influence. His beautiful self portrait Portrait of Rembrandt with Gorget had a similar color palette (depending on the photograph) as the film. So my painting reflected that and consisted of an array of pale desaturated greens and golds, complemented by vivid pops of red and deep navy blue. Like Rembrandt, I also wanted to render an affective chiaroscuro, not only because it's visual appealing but it's symbolic of Barnabas struggle with light and dark.

Technique
Painted in Photoshop with a Wacom in 18 hours over a 3 day period; all on one layer to help simulate real oil painting. I used the Standard Portrait Template (3125 x 2500), Fine Art brushes from my collection to create the texture and look of real paint, along with the grid method pioneered by Renaissances Masters to help keep proportions accurate.

Here is my entry for the Dark Shadows competition! I am very pleased with how it turned out. Even though the film takes place in the 70's, what I've always loved about Tim Burton's works is the Victorian aesthetic that they have, so I chose to run with that. The title of this piece is a quote from the trailer. I was really excited to participate in this because I've always loved the dark, whimsical nature of Burton's work. Well, I guess all that's left to say is "enjoy!" and make sure to take a look at the other entries, too! There's some super awesome work out there.

Edits 4/23: Lots of edits today!! I'm just making sure it's 100% done and that I'm completely satisfied before the contest ends tomorrow. I added much more detail to his face and hands and fixed a few things that looked weird. I added more sponge brushwork and detail to the background to give it a painterly look, incorporated some red, and added a few Burton-esque environmental elements, such as the curly tree branches, that I've always adored. I also attempted to make Barnabas look more like Johnny Depp. I made the wine glass more realistic and gave it a crack (I mean, he can't expect the stemware to have aged as well as he did!) Lastly, I added a Black Widow spider on his hand, and some cobwebs in the corners both to give the piece some boundaries and to connect the logo more to the image. I sincerely hope you enjoy it!! I'm much happier with it now.

Edit: I would like to thank everyone who has viewed, commented on, and added this piece to their favorites or collections so much! I'm not what you would call a "famous" deviant, so the attention that you guys have given to this is both surprising and heart-warming to me. Thanks for all of your support!!

Ivy Dream: Before And After

Remake of my old digital drawing Ivy Dream which I've been working on for a while now. The original is from year 2007 when I was just getting started with digital media. At the time I had no clue about digital painting or what to do with my Photoshop so I pretty much focused on coloring some of my pencil drawings. I know it may not look much but at the time I was really proud of that artwork - and it took me ages to finish, too, since everything was new to me. I'm actually still pretty happy with some things I did back then which is why I wanted my remake to stay true to the original as far as the pose and overall concept were concerned. It's fun to see both of them placed side by side and think of all those things I've learned in five years.

Edit entry 02-19-2012: Yet again i went back and fix up the crappy background some more, This time i went over the pen scribble with color pencil and i also touched up the dragon with white gel pen. The dragon was colored with 1.0mm ball point pens.

I decided to go back and fill in the background of this more. Its not great but, its better.

I think i'll name him Caecelius. He is a ruby dragon. And he has just been knocked down in mid-air by an unseen enemy.

Caecelius is a rouge dragon, just looking out for himself.
He roams the lands searching for anything interesting. unattached and a loner,he believes he has no worries. But that has ended up making him a target. The unseen enemy that attacked him, has noticed that no one seems to know him; therefore, he will not be missed..............."He will make perfect test subject."

This is an oil painting of my sister with her violin. This piece was really a challenge for me given that I was aiming for a more impressionist feel.
I really consider this piece a new milestone on my journey through art. I know the media... now I need to learn how to bend it to my will.

Old picture is old~ In the midst of my exams now so I am digging out old photos to post~ This shoot marks the first time I had a shoot for Sheryl and with magical make up power, I looked very different~

Growing up in Michigan has given me a deep appreciation for Fall. Most of my favorite memories of Michigan involve long walks through vibrant forests, crisp air that turned my nose red, crunchy leaves, roasted almonds and hot spiced apple cider...

A lot of people look at fall as something sad or melancholy as everything begins to die before winter. But it's not so! This is the final frenzy from flora and fauna as everyone scurries to prepare for winter. There is so much to do, so much going on! Even the wind seems to push us on, hurrying us along that sweeping path toward the cold and dark months ahead.

I decided to enter this month's deviantART challenge, Draw this Again, and even though I never end up winning I do enjoy doing it.

So yeah, I think I improved a little over the past 7 years. It's good to see that hard work does pay off.

Also, pink, yes I was feeling colorful. This piece was originally going to be black and white but I decided to randomly through pink on top and I just couldn't go back.

Rise Of The Red

My entry for the Dodge Dart contest, at the last moment inspiration struck. And it turned into this.

To me cars feel alive, they have a soul and I wanted to try and convert that feeling into something 'alive'.
Used the whole car as inspiration for this, lets see how many parts of the car you can find back in this beasty. :3

Barnabas Collins: [drools at the "blood" inside] Aaahhhh...

I made his eyes red for the obvious reason the hunger of blood that he is craving. I felt it would stand out and make an impact. I loved this expression and couldn't resist. I previously started this a few days before I found out about the contest. When I found out, my jaw dropped hitting my table and then I couldn't sit still for a hour or so.

Inspiration I used while working on this, I listened to alot of Danny Elfman music. I listened to the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack the most. Music really helps with concentration but what other way for this piece than to listen to some Elfman music.

Helped me with the template, if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have been able to submit this to the contest.

~ 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, Red Pencil for his eyes!
~ Stump, Q-Tip, Finger
Used the stump for the dark areas, used the q-tip for the light areas.}

This turned out so beautifuly i didn't think that it would.
Unlike the black demon this was definatly not a speed paint it took me about 10 hours to complete

lovely simple background took about an hour
I had way too much fun with it

i'm thinking about making some of the Demon Hearts adouptable would anyone be interested?

This is number two for the Dark Shadows contest I'm did..
This is of course is Johnny Depp as Barnabas of the new Tim Burton film Dark Shadows.
He was drawn with red, and black fine and ultra fine and large sharpie marker....on light pink heavy card stock paper to stop the sharpie bleed..
Im so happy to be able to submit my drawings to this very cool contest..There are so many wonderful artists who have submitted such great works of art..Good luck to you all..

It aches me to see when people dont treat our soldiers well. They forget that war is something that is not an easy job for them, they have emotions too. In fact, these soldiers have too much happening in their lives and yet we ignore it all.
I think I will say this in their behalf what they couldnt tell us

We protect you, we fight your wars but above all, we bleed for your freedom. What you probably fail to realize is that our traumatic experiences make our lives an everlasting battlefield. We live a hard life of constant blood spattered flash-backs because really, nothing can rid us of the amount of red on our hands. Our lives become a living hell and death seems to materialize before our eyes as a much comforting fate. And yet, all that we ask in return, is for you to never forget the countless martyrs who gave up their today for your tomorrow.

So many years i'm on da and this is the first time i've joined a contest! XD
maybe some of you have already noticed that i'm from germany while this contest is strictly for users in the u.s.. but when i read that burton himself is going to be the jury, i just HAD to give it a try.
and when i do NOT win...WHATEVER! MEH!
at least i've risked something!

this movie is actually one of my highest anticipated movies of this year. burton & depp will always stay a dreamteam!
