Settings: ASA - 400, Shutter Speed - 1/60th or 1/30th, Aperture - f/2 to f/3
Description: Taken at night, available light was City Light (street lamps, passing cars, store fronts)/ no flash was used so i just tried to get a few feet depth of field, focus centered between the two subjects, while trying to hand hold the camera as still as possible knowing between the DOF & the slow shutter it was gonna be a soft pic, but whatcha gonna do.
About the Photo:
This is the only voyeuristic photo i consider to have ever really taken, i don't know who or what happened to the people in the photo. My friend and i were walking home from the fireworks one night in early august/2006; i was taking photo's along the way (i was half drunk at the time, which in this case helped me understand why you hear about professional photographers carrying a flask in there case). Crossing a busy street at the corner we saw a guy lying on the curb in agony with a crowd around him; a few minutes earlier someone had stabbed him in the gut. My buddy immediately said take a picture (i obliged). The people there had everything under control (if it hadn’t been the picture would not have even been a thought apposed to helping); the ambulance was there within 2-3 minutes. I thought briefly about the photo as i walked up quietly/ non-invasively, didn't make eye contact or say anything to anyone, snapped the shot and a couple more from different angles (not as good) then just backed away as my friend talked to the surrounding crowd. The people around were aware of me, but didn't say anything or try and stop me; partially the shock of the incident and partly the fact someone would just walk up and take a picture i think. Right after i stopped and stepped back my much drunker buddy took my camera (i refused to take any more shots) and tried to not so tactfully(the drunkenness) shoot some pictures, but the people around stopped him right out; being proof you can get away with a lot if you just approach a situation the right way.
Prior to taking the picture i always wondered how somebody could take a photo of a person in a very vulnerable state, but after taking the picture i realized how very easy it is for the very same reason that they are so vulnerable and helpless to say or do anything to stop you; which becomes the moral question of whither it's right to take photos such as these, a question which likely stops most of us.
i am sorry if i have gone too long or am over stating the case of some guy that got stabbed and a picture took, but i don't live with very much violence in my life, and this was a powerful picture for myself, that is why i picked it.

P.S. - i don't know if it was related or not, but about a month later the police arrested a guy who had been randomly walking around downtown for few weeks stabbing people at night.

I put a lot of thought, debate, and effort into the photos I'm submitting for this contest. I really wanted to capture moments that made me smile, but it also had to have a natural feel to it and a good composition. I took a lot of photos, and in the end narrowed it down to a select few. I don't know how well I'll do though, since I don't have the nice equipment that a lot of the other photographers entering this contest have. But that's not stopping me!

I'm really glad I was able to capture this! We were watching the nightly summer fireworks performance at Disneyland and my youngest cousin was on top of his dad's shoulders to watch. I noticed part way through that when particularly bright fireworks went off I could make out his face and the whole thing had a great feel to it. So I took out my camera and took as many photos as I could! This was the only one to come out decent enough.

I really like how it all came out. I like how you can see my cousin gazing up at the fireworks in wonder. I like all the detail that was captured in the firework itself and the colors of the smoke behind it. I like that I was able to squeeze in Sleeping Beauty's castle on the other side to tie the whole thing together.

The editing for this one had to be the toughest out of all of them. The original photo was still very dark, but when I lightened it to see the amount of detail I wanted in my cousin then all these really obnoxious pixels started to pop up in him and I couldn't stand it. I ended up blending the pixels into something smoother by hand, letting some of the original pixels show through so he didn't feel painted in. I also enhanced the firework and the castle a bit, and took out all of the other camera screens at the bottom since they were distracting from the one light that I wanted in there, the firework.

Wednesday, August 2nd at English Bay. Several hundred thousand individuals attend this event 4 times over the course of 2 weeks each summer in Vancouver. It is a musical fireworks display. [link] for the infos.

The stats:
Nikon F100
Zeiss 50/1,4 Planar
Trix shot +1 at 800
f/2,8 at 1/2000

I was shooting at 800 to allow shooting during the afternoon and early evening with acceptable results while not being forced to quit once the sun went down. Chose f/2,8 obviously for the isolating factor while I'd still need a bit of depth to have the scene make sense.
I used a variety of different methods for this. I used two of my own photos, one of sparks from a firework and one of autumn leaves on the floor (you might not be able to identify these) I used the rescource [link] and the stock [link] for this. I also used my mouse to add most of the details and used various effects from my computer program (arcsoft photo studio) to add texture etc in as well.
I tried to get some symbolism in there too, though that usually isn't my strong point. There is a rabbit in there obviously, then the leaves are for nature etc, the sparks are to do with the religious side of easter as is the star. The lollipops stand for the sweetness of the chocolate eggs we now associate with easter.
Anyway, hope you enjoy!!
