Snow was falling, and it was almost dark. Evening came on, the last evening of the year. In the cold and gloom a poor little girl, bareheaded and barefoot, was walking through the streets. Of course when she had left her house she'd had slippers on, but what good had they been? They were very big slippers, way too big for her, for they belonged to her mother. The little girl had lost them running across the road, where two carriages had rattled by terribly fast. One slipper she'd not been able to find again and a boy had run off with the other, saying he could use it very well as a cradle some day when he had children of his own. And so the little girl walked on her naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried several packages of matches, and she held a box of them in her hand. No one had bought any from her all day long, and no one had given her a cent.

Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along, a picture of misery, poor little girl! The snowflakes fell on her long fair hair, which hung in pretty curls over her neck. In all the windows lights were shining, and there was a wonderful smell of roast goose, for it was New Year's eve. Yes, she thought of that!

In a corner formed by two houses, one of which projected farther out into the street than the other, she sat down and drew up her little feet under her. She was getting colder and colder, but did not dare to go home, for she had sold no matches, nor earned a single cent, and her father would surely beat her. Besides, it was cold at home, for they had nothing over them but a roof through which the wind whistled even though the biggest cracks had been stuffed with straw and rags.

Her hands were almost dead with cold. Oh, how much one little match might warm her! If she could only take one from the box and rub it against the wall and warm her hands. She drew one out. R-r-ratch! How it sputtered and burned! It made a warm, bright flame, like a little candle, as she held her hands over it; but it gave a strange light! It really seemed to the little girl as if she were sitting before a great iron stove with shining brass knobs and a brass cover. How wonderfully the fire burned! How comfortable it was! The youngster stretched out her feet to warm them too; then the little flame went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the burnt match in her hand.

She struck another match against the wall. It burned brightly, and when the light fell upon the wall it became transparent like a thin veil, and she could see through it into a room. On the table a snow-white cloth was spread, and on it stood a shining dinner service. The roast goose steamed gloriously, stuffed with apples and prunes. And what was still better, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled along the floor with a knife and fork in its breast, right over to the little girl. Then the match went out, and she could see only the thick, cold wall. She lighted another match. Then she was sitting under the most beautiful Christmas tree. It was much larger and much more beautiful than the one she had seen last Christmas through the glass door at the rich merchant's home. Thousands of candles burned on the green branches, and colored pictures like those in the printshops looked down at her. The little girl reached both her hands toward them. Then the match went out. But the Christmas lights mounted higher. She saw them now as bright stars in the sky. One of them fell down, forming a long line of fire.

"Now someone is dying," thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only person who had loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star fell down a soul went up to God.

She rubbed another match against the wall. It became bright again, and in the glow the old grandmother stood clear and shining, kind and lovely.

"Grandmother!" cried the child. "Oh, take me with you! I know you will disappear when the match is burned out. You will vanish like the warm stove, the wonderful roast goose and the beautiful big Christmas tree!"

And she quickly struck the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother with her. And the matches burned with such a glow that it became brighter than daylight. Grandmother had never been so grand and beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and both of them flew in brightness and joy above the earth, very, very high, and up there was neither cold, nor hunger, nor fear-they were with God.

But in the corner, leaning against the wall, sat the little girl with red cheeks and smiling mouth, frozen to death on the last evening of the old year. The New Year's sun rose upon a little pathetic figure. The child sat there, stiff and cold, holding the matches, of which one bundle was almost burned.

"She wanted to warm herself," the people said. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, and how happily she had gone with her old grandmother into the bright New Year.

An entry for the wonderful Solidarity Contest: [link] held by the lovely

I know of this story from my childhood.

Can we put the tiger back in its cage?

Credits:
All stock is from #StockProject or my own private resources.
Required:
<a class="thumb" href="http://StockProject1.deviantart.com/art/Roaming-Tiger-11225171-188383555" title="Roaming Tiger 11225171 by *StockProject1, Dec 3, 2010 in Resources & Stock Images > Stock Images > Animals > Mammals > Wild" super_img="http://th05.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2010/337/d/3/roaming_tiger_11225171_by_stockproject1-d345poj.jpg" super_fullimg="http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/337/d/3/roaming_tiger_11225171_by_stockproject1-d345poj.jpg" super_fullw="1623" super_fullh="1170" super_w="1053" super_h="759"> <a class="thumb" href="http://StockProject1.deviantart.com/art/Lone-Pineapple-6724794-195769439" title="Lone Pineapple 6724794 by *StockProject1, Feb 1, 2011 in Resources & Stock Images > Stock Images > Food" super_img="http://th03.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2011/032/7/f/lone_pineapple_6724794_by_stockproject1-d38k0nz.jpg" super_fullimg="http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/032/7/f/lone_pineapple_6724794_by_stockproject1-d38k0nz.jpg" super_fullw="900" super_fullh="1351" super_w="730" super_h="1095"> <a class="thumb antisocial" href="http://StockProject1.deviantart.com/art/Pocket-Watch-3663976-182511090" title="Pocket Watch 3663976 by *StockProject1, Oct 13, 2010 in Resources & Stock Images > Stock Images > Miscellaneous" super_img="http://th09.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2010/286/7/f/pocket_watch_3663976_by_stockproject1-d30nugi.jpg" super_fullimg="http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/286/7/f/pocket_watch_3663976_by_stockproject1-d30nugi.jpg" super_fullw="1591" super_fullh="1195" super_w="1032" super_h="775">
Background:
<a class="thumb antisocial" href="http://StockProject1.deviantart.com/art/Ice-Waterfall-147724-182508958" title="Ice Waterfall 147724 by *StockProject1, Oct 13, 2010 in Resources & Stock Images > Stock Images > Nature" super_img="http://th02.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/f/2010/286/5/6/ice_147724_by_stockproject1-d30nsta.jpg" super_fullimg="http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/286/5/6/ice_147724_by_stockproject1-d30nsta.jpg" super_fullw="1725" super_fullh="1102" super_w="1119" super_h="714"> <a class="thumb" href="http://StockProject1.deviantart.com/art/Hot-Flames-1886353-192061054" title="Hot Flames 1886353 by *StockProject1, Jan 3, 2011 in Resources & Stock Images > Stock Images > Nature > Fire" super_img="http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/003/5/9/hot_flames_1886353_by_stockproject1-d36cj9a.jpg" super_w="900" super_h="599">

A photographer holds his breath as he snaps a shot, and breathing is controlled in archery and shooting. In clinical microbiology, when you have the blood of a patient in one hand, and a syringe in another, double-gloving does little to alleviate the pressure. Your every movement and thought is on the task at hand, and when the syringe has been disposed of in the proper biohazard containers, you realise that you've been holding your breath all along.

There are times when I wonder why I bother going to the laboratory every day, with daily dangers lurking behind every sample and sharp objects. These are days when I watch my colleagues start bleeding at the gums due to who-knows-what exposure; days when someone tells you that their cancer is in remission but she wouldn't be coming back to continue the research that probably gave it to her; and days when another colleague has an incident involving test tubes full of patient blood, a cut on the skin, a trip to the ER, and a test for HIV.

And then there were days when carelessness caused me to be exposed to chemicals that flooded my trachea with phlegm, and put me in bed for three days. Breathing was difficult, and the lack of oxygen meant that every movement had to count.

There was also the horror of watching the spot of blood pool beneath the glove, after my hand was caught under the very heavy lid of a centrifuge. Frantic thoughts of "Did the glove break? What was done in that centrifuge, can it infect me? Where in the lab is a clean sink that I can go to clean up this wound?" mingled with concerns for my experiment (samples are hard to come by and I was working on that for several days), and the pain of a nail split halfway through on my thumb.

At the age of 24, I purchased a personal insurance policy so that if anything happened, my parents wouldn't have to fork out the cash to bury me. Life was dicey, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing, putting it on the line that way. I didn't want to go the way of my grandfather, a chemist whose lungs turned to sacs of water because of some chemical he inhaled on the job. It just didn't seem worthwhile.

And then one day, as I was making notes of some samples I was processing, I noticed that one patient had to undergo cerebrospinal fluid extraction over a period of several months. This likely meant that an infection was present, and the doctors or the diagnostic laboratory couldn't figure out what was wrong with this patient. It wasn't something they'd take on lightly, because the procedure isn't exactly a walk in the park. What messed me up then and now, was that the patient was only 6 months old at the time it all began... I had never cried about anything regarding work before then. Suddenly, hiding behind a labcoat and lurking in the warm confines of a laboratory isn't enough protection from the pain of a world made scary by unknowns, a world cruel by its very nature.

I took up microbiology because I wanted to make a difference, to help people and to learn more about this fascinating microscopic world. Reality has tempered my enthusiasm into resignation, but despite that, my original idealism survived. And it grew. I still want to find cures for what ails us all, to prevent diseases, to do things like alleviate the sufferings of those with HIV/AIDS. In my own small way, I intend to keep the promise I made to myself, my study, and humanity.

For those who are angry at the scientist, researchers and public health professionals for 'not doing anything', spare a kind thought for them, they know what it's like to hold their breath, putting their lives on hold, while the world rushes by.

I'm still holding mine, waiting for the other shoe to drop, watching for latent infections that would rear its ugly head one day. But when tomorrow comes, I will still walk into the laboratory and suit up in my labcoat and gloves. I need to do my job. Then, and only then, can I breathe easy.

About the poem
Stuck in Amber was drawn from my own experiences and thoughts about HIV/AIDS.

The first stanza is about the horror brought on by a laboratory accident. Suddenly, you realise how thin your skin is, and how the gloves won't help you and how you seem suddenly frozen in time.

The second stanza is about a flashback to a benefit concert meant to raise funds for people living with HIV/AIDS. The verse All's not as it seems is referring to the volunteers and performers at the benefit, who, despite their outward cheerfulness and party attitude, are totally aware of the seriousness of the situation. It also refers to the fact that the lead 'showgirl' is in daylight, a rather staid young accountant-type named Eric.

The third stanza is self-explanatory.

The fourth stanza goes back to the time-stop situation, but is referred to as being stuck in amber. Getting sick (or being suspected of infection) is rather like being yanked out of the real world; you fall into the cracks and merely exist. And you wonder when you can start actually living again. And oddly enough, the time-stop becomes somewhat comforting (a nest), despite its staticness, because the future seems like a scarier place to be in.

The fifth stanza makes reference to the fact that HIV is a virus, not just by name, but by action. Viruses are machine-like, their every action 'calculated' to provide the most efficient method of replication. Some paths would fail, and those would be replaced by better methods or machines. As a microbiologist, I am often stumped by comments of people saying that diseases are punishment for vices or unfaithful ways and that those infected are damned and should be shunned by all of society. Perhaps that was acceptable before we discovered the 'Germ Theory of Diseases', but in this day and age... Frankly, I'm stunned to speechlessness whenever I hear idiot talk about establishing islands where those infected could be banished. And then I get started on an unprintable round of ranting.

The sixth and final stanza had a few dual meanings. Amber to red refers to the traffic light system meaning "STOP!"; the fact that our vigilance has dropped the past few years, causing the situation to hit alarming red alert levels; and connecting the idea of being stuck in amber, to that of the issue of HIV/AIDS (red ribbon). Our fate refers our destiny, the old promise of a cure.

My Story: Through the Microscope

Below is how I envisioned the campaign missions would pan out. I knew the conflict between the planets would be the main force driving the plot, with the main plot twist provided by the conflict between the classes of Valiant. Yeah, I didn't involve the environmental disaster on Aquera, but that could be in the expansion? ;- ) I'm not sure how it came out the way it did, but I gave each planet very specific personalities. The Valiants, imperialistic. The Aquerans, compassionate and insightful. The Biomoths, honorable but they will do what's necessary.

I know that I didn't follow the rules of the contest, and so wouldn't be eligible for any prize, but this was for fun. I wanted to do this, and put my ideas out there, regardless of if I would win. The moment I heard of the contest, I knew I'd want to design a tech tree (didn't realize I'd design all 3), because it's just the sort of thing a big-picture-plus-overly-detailed person like me might go nuts for. And it was very fun :- )
Overall, time spent would be somewhere between 24 and 36 hours.

FINAL NOTES After Having Finished:
I have not looked at any of the other entries for this contest, if that was even allowed. I wanted these to be all my own ideas.

Looking back at them, Valiant’s seems by far the most complicated, and Biomoth’s seems slightly more simple than Aquera’s. However, Biomoth’s funky unit/building count makes up for simplicity, and Aquera’s is made a little more complicated by the Rageseekers. So Aquera’s is by far the most simple.

I decided I didn’t want any superweapon or hero unit. Warcraft III (along with The Frozen Throne, the only Warcraft RTSs I’ve played) pulled hero units off very nicely, but they were built into the campaign missions as the main characters, and I didn’t want to do that. When I say “ pulled off very well,” I mean that they were powerful units, able to evolve by leveling-up, yet weren’t over-powered to the point of that they could single-handedly demolish an entire enemy army. They were powerful units, but mere units nonetheless, which is very difficult to balance. Most RTS’s superweapons become win-buttons, which I didn’t want to have at all. Command & Conquer: Generals did it the best, by having a timer built in to each superweapon before it could be activated (so the goal of the enemy immediately becomes to destroy your superweapon before you can fire it), but it’s still a win-button.

My main sources of inspiration were WarCraft III, Age of Empires (which, as much as I love and respect it, I used AoE more as an inspiration of what to avoid), StarCraft, and Star Trek: Armada. Other games I kept in mind were Command & Conquer, Command & Conquer: Generals, Command & Conquer III, and Star Wars: Force Commander.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

CAMPAIGN MISSIONS:
Valiant:
The Valiant high leadership, after years of waiting for Earth, their only external source of pure resources, to make contact with them, have decided that they’re sick of waiting. They decide they have to find new resources somewhere. The planets are all taken, but the planets’ moons are not. The moons are barren wastelands, but they could provide the raw minerals and metals needed to sustain a civilization.

The Valiant leadership decides to send a colony to one of Valiant’s three moons. This colony is made up of the lowest class of Valiant society; these colonists are expendable, and will attempt to forge out a living with only the bare scraps.

This is the player’s first set of levels, including the training missions. The terrain is simple, the technology is very rudimentary, and there are few enemies.

Though the base is successfully established, the Valiants decide that bases are easy to set up – colonies are not. They decide the moons are too hard to repeat the process. The other planets, at least, are fairly habitable. They know this thanks to the scans from years ago, before the worlds became estranged from each other, leading to the fact that they know almost nothing about their neighbors, but the arrogant leaders are confident they can take on any other race. These scans tell them that one planet is almost entirely aquatic, and while their technology could survive on either planet, they’d prefer a land-based planet.

Off to Biomoth!

The player now takes command of a mid-level colony.

The new Valiant colonists must contend with the harsh environment and native wildlife (including carnivorous plants). After not too long, they encounter the Biomoths, whom the Valiants greet with hostility, which the Biomoths are forced to return in kind.

The Biomoth technology is unfamiliar, and effective on their home turf, as are their tactics. The Valiant defenses are quickly crippled by the Biomoth attackers.

The player undertakes a number of defensive and offensive missions against the Biomoths. The player wins each one, but in every mission briefing hears about the roundabout and strafing tactics being employed by the enemy.

Despite a number of apparent victories, the Valiants are quickly out-maneuvered. The Biomoths finally have the Valiants surrounded, and all they have left is their launch craft (which is the Valiant main building). The Biomoths are intelligent, and offer the surrounded Valiants an ultimatum: they can leave Biomoth, or they can provoke a full-scale war.

The Valiant colonists surrender, and leave, returning to Valiant in defeat, and tell the leadership about the inhabitants of Biomoth. The leaders of Valiant are furious, and decide they will go to Biomoth in full force, intent on crushing the Biomoths under their heel. After all, Biomoth has resources they want, and if they have to create another caste to get them, so be it.

With the full might of Valiant technology, the citizens of Valiant wage full-scale war on Biomoth.

The player takes command of a high-tech series of missions fighting Biomoth.

The Biomoths are taken by surprise; from their point of view, they had negotiated an honorable agreement with the hostile invaders, and expected everyone to honorably abide by it. Unable to coordinate fast enough, the Valiants wage effective combat against Biomoth.

Seeing the writing on the wall, the Biomoth leadership disintegrates (by designed contingency), becoming decentralized before it can be destroyed.

It appears Biomoth has been conquered entirely.

The player may have some optional skirmishes they can undertake against Biomoth; finish off the last corners of the campaign, but risking some of their resources to do so.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Aquera:
Refugees from Biomoth land on Aquera.

Though they’re not xenophobic, the Aquerans are private and closed-off. They are very much at a loss of what to do. Despite escaping from the Valiants and arriving on Aquera in relative safety, the Aqueran environment and technology are of no help to the dying Biomoths.

At grave risk to themselves, they send a small base to Biomoth. They hope if they lay low, and are negotiable, they can avoid confrontation from the Valiants. They hope they can discover enough about the Biomoth environment to safe the Biomoths they’ve taken-in.

The player takes command of a low-level Aqueran settlement. They start by fighting the natural elements of Biomoth, similar to what Valiant did previously. Later missions will change, as described in a moment.

They’re confronted by a misshapen mix of Valiant and Biomoth technology. This ugly mess, while powerful, is not exceptionally effective. In this case, the whole is definitely less than the sum of the parts.

Though the Aquerans repelled the initial Valiant aggression, they know there will be more coming. They make a daring move: they decide to strike out, and gather information about the Biomoths so they can help them.

They play a game of cat-and-mouse with Valiant troops, and finally come upon a Biomoth medical facility, then realize they’re surrounded. They pitch a fort of necessity and call for a transport to pick them up. The transport will never arrive in time, so instead of being besieged to death, they decide the best tactic is to go on the offensive and cripple the Valiant attackers.

The cat-and-mouse missions, and the best-defense-is-a-good-offense mission are still in the low/middle level of Aqueran technological advancement.

The Aquerans escape, but the Aqueran leaders decide it’s too politically dangerous to bring them back to Aquera. They rendezvous with the Biomoth refugees on a moon of Biomoth (which is more hospitable than Biomoth itself).

The player takes control of a mid-level Aqueran base.

The new Aqueran base finds that in addition to the bizarre wildlife, there are already Valiant bases set up there. The Aquerans see what this means: the Valiants are spreading across the entire solar system, and it’s only a matter of time before Aquera will be in danger. They order the Aqueran base to go to war on these Valiant bases, while Aquera begins its own preparations for war.

This medium-sized Aqueran offense succeeds in taking the moon.

The Valiants, realizing Aquera has become a threat, begins setting up a staging area on an Aqueran moon with the purpose of launching a new offensive against Aquera.

In response, the Aquerans launch a full-scale preemptive attack against the staging moon.

This attack, split up into several missions, is a high level of Aqueran technological advancement.

But the Valiants, in an unprecedented display of inhumanity, threaten to poison the waters of Aquera if they do not surrender. With no better option, Aquera surrenders to the barbarism of Valiant.

The player may have the option to take command of some renegade Aqueran battalions, making some last attacks against the Valiants. However, the price of failure is the poisoning of Aquera’s oceans and the death of all its inhabitants.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Biomoth:
The player starts by controlling only one cell of the decentralized Biomoth military, giving them the lowest level of Biomoth technological advancement.

The many cells of the Biomoth military are completely independent, with no communication between them, but they all know that operating in effective guerilla-style warfare against the Valiant occupation would be most effective. With their still-unconventional technology and methods, their hit-and-run strikes are still very effective.

They begin recapturing some supplies, and slowly begin making contact with other Biomoth cells, giving them access to slightly more and more improved technology.

The player is in command of multiple strikes against Valiant bases with slowly ascending technology.

After taking a large Valiant base, they find that the Biomoth leadership is prepared to centralize and wage organized war at last.

The small collection of cells (under the player’s command) makes its way toward the Biomoth centrality, which they save from the Valiant forces besieging it. The Biomoth command is finally reunited.

It is at this time they receive word of Aquera’s surrender, and they feel honor-bound to help, but they have no idea how effective their technology will be on another world. But they strike out, sending a medium-sized force to Aquera.

The player takes command of a mid-level of Biomoth technological advancement.

Being as stealthy as possible, they sabotage the facilities that contain the Valiant’s planet-killing poison. They then begin attacking the Valiant strongholds scattered across Aquera, and free captive Aquerans.

The Aquerans and Biomoths together decide that this has gone on long enough, and they amass for war once again.

The Aquerans send an invasion force to set up a staging area on a Valiant moon. This force, though large, meets incredibly stiff resistance. The Biomoths simultaneously do so on the second of three Valiant moons, then jump to take control of the third and last moon.

The player commands the Biomoth force on the second moon at the apex of Biomoth advancement. The player does not command the force attacking the third moon.

On this third moon, they find no resistance at all. Instead, they find a fledgling colony of lower-class Valiant citizens. Upon hearing of the barbarity of their leaders, they pledge open rebellion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Joint Command:
The player is informed that they will command a joint task force of Biomoth and Aqueran battalions, complimented by the Valiant rebels. Hence, the player has access to all three build trees simultaneously.

However, learning of the joint command assembled against them, the Valiants are not to be outdone. They launch massive attacks simultaneously against Aquera and Biomoth. The Aqueran and Biomoth invasion forces are largely forced to go back and defend their home planets.

The remaining offensive forces (under the player’s command) are given orders to strike against Valiant. Yeah, this seems impossible…but this is a “numbers matter not” moment.

A combined force of Valiant rebels, Aquerans, and Biomoths land on Valiant.

The player begins this tier of the campaign here.

They know their only hope is to take the capitol and force a surrender out of the mouths of the leaders. That’s the upside of a caste system – cut off the head, and the body dies.

They land in a remote area some distance from the capitol (to avoid the defenses which are largely anti-air). They semi-stealthily make their way toward the capitol, Valiant Prime, taking out any resistance as they go.

As they progress into more and more heavily-populated areas, they encounter troubling entities. Valiant defenses begin to consist of more and more grotesquely-altered versions of Biomoth and Aqueran units (after all, Valiant has occupied both worlds).
RTS Challenge
Campaign Missions
Valiant Tech Tree
Aquera Tech Tree
Biomoth Tech Tree

My pseudo-entry to the RTS Challenge.

As they continue, their presence becomes more and more compromised and they have to rush faster and faster.

Finally, though they set up several small bases along the way, they set up a fort in a satellite city of Valiant Prime. From there, they begin launching major strikes against the capitol while simultaneously defending against Valiant’s defenders.

It finally comes down to decimating the capitol’s defenses, and the Valiant leadership falls.

Yaay!

When I was a kid, I had dreams that were normal. Until one part would replay over and over until I woke up in a panic gasping for air. Each time that happened, I couldn't barely move my body. My mind was racing and I could barely see. But what I could see, every time, was this... thing. My eyesight blurry, I could only make out that it's skin would shine on the moonlight. It was scrawny, and breathing hard.... just like me. The expression on it's face was as if I had scared it. It's eyes were lightly glowing. Frozen just like me.
Any attempt to try to make up a monster led to this true story. It was always gripping the sheets by my feet. Both of us, staring at one each other. Until I slowly lost consciousnesses and would fall back asleep.

My heart is racing right now as I write this.
