I did the original render in the same pose for an exhibition and gave some prints in 2011. I saw it again a few weeks ago and I thought it was awful, so I decided to re create a new one with a better look. Final render is 10200 px tall, too bad fur gets lost at this resolution.

Mecha Front - Raptor Miniature

For several months I've been working on a set of mech designs for the Mecha Front game being started by Paulson Games. The first 3D sculpt of the set is completed and is headed off to have a master printed.
This is the NorAm light mecha "Raptor". It's a fast scout that mounts 2 machine guns and 2 pods of missiles.

A kickstarter for the entire game and it's minis is coming up, but for now this sculpt is available for limited pre-order as a full resin cast (production model will be pewter) and should be delivered early next month. It is available here: [link]
The model is 65mm tall standing on a 60mm base. I did my best to make these 3D renders look like the real deal.

Ferrari's new LaFerrari hybrid Supercar.

The LaFerrari is the first mild hybrid from Ferrari, providing the highest power output of any Ferrari whilst decreasing fuel consumption by 40 percent. The LaFerrari's mid rear mounted 65° V-12 Internal Combustion Engine has a 6.3 litre (6262 cc) capacity producing 800 PS (588 kW; 789 bhp) supplemented by a 163 PS (120 kW; 161 bhp) KERS unit (called HY-KERS), which will provide short bursts of extra power. Unlike conventional hybrid vehicles, in which either the electric motor or the internal combustion engine is running, the KERS system adds extra power to the combustion engine's output level for a total of 963 HP !!

Ferrari states that the car has a top speed exceeding 350 km/h (220 mph), and that it is capable of reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) in under three seconds, 200km/h in under seven seconds, and a speed of 300 km/h (190 mph) in under 15 seconds. Ferrari also claim that the car has lapped its Fiorano Test Circuit in under 1 minute and 20 seconds which is faster than any other road legal car Ferrari has ever produced.

During this long drought of me not being able to produce any new art I was saved when I realized that I made this last year and never uploaded it. It's not in my nature to just forget to upload something I spent a couple of weeks working on, and that wasn't the case here either. This was actually designed to be printed out large and laminated as an aquarium background which was going to be given an Avatar at night theme. Unfortunately the real life setup didn't look as good as Imagined it and so was aborted (ugh, couple-hundred dollars well spent ) And I guess that disappointment put me in a sour mood about it for a while.
But Now I'm over it I can re-appreciate this again as another artwork which can finally be put into my gallery. The composition was set up for that initial purpose though and so may not entirely be what I would have gone with if it was going to just be another art-piece from the beginning and nothing more. But with no layered file anymore, Myself and the viewers are stuck with it as-is

Anyway, it's safe to say that everytime a big movie, game, book, whatever comes out, all fan-art generated from it is about the characters. Avatar seems to have inspired the highest ratio of landscape-focused tributes and I guess this is another contributor to that (plus if I tried to draw a Na'Vi I'm sure it would have come out laughably fake compared to the scenery). I even paid careful attention to some good references I found of the fictional plants that made the most significant impact in the night-time scenes. My inner gardener was very critical about achieving botanical accuracy to plants that aren't even real

I built the structure in SketchUp, rendered it in Vue. My biggest problem here was deciding when to stop building it because I just wanted to go on and on and on...

EDIT:
Several people commented on how dangerous this can be. Well, fear not because those orange stripes are in fact a force-field generator, automatically activated when someone, equipped with a "Kinetic Bracelet", enters their area of influence. The force field will automatic cancel the kinetic and potential energies of your moving body if, for example, you happen to slip and fall. Therefore, you will effectively stop your fall and start floating above the stripe. The "Kinetic Bracelet" will then call your "Hover Vehicle" to the proximity and you will be able to jump on board and select your next destination.

The "Kinetic Bracelet" has an "adventure" mode which you can activate and will cancel the effect of the orange stripes. This way you can dive between levels at will. Do it at your own risk. The insurance will not cover accidents if this mode is activated.

The "Kinetic Bracelet" has an "extreme" mode which will randomly change the effect of the force field. For example, it can increase your kinetic energy and decrease your potential energy, thereby allowing to make huge jumps effortlessly. It's also extremely dangerous... and, of course, the insurance will not cover any accident.

Warning: not all areas are equipped with orange stripes. The "Kinetic Bracelet" will not let you move in these areas unless you set it to "adventure" mode.

I start to like the 2,35x1 format, it really gives you more space to work on!
Was so happy to see that Kerkytha could handle the models. Has about twice as many polygons and light sources as the previous two scenes together! I really need to get me 64bit programs to handle my delusions of grandeur^^ Think this is the first piece of mine where 3d stuff fills up literally every corner of the canvas! Yay
Tried to show off the incredibly (stupid) size of this ship. Went through quite some troubles to get it the way I want it, but I guess it was worth it
As you see, both sides prepare themselves for the coming encounter. Will this ship be ready in time?

Since I'm working 24/7 in our studio (which makes me happy because we have enough work ), I haven't posted anything here in ages. Now I'd post one of my renders I made in Vue 10.5 Infinite ....not my latest, but definitely one of my favorites.
For postwork I used Photoshop CS6 and Filter Forge 3, which I can highly recommend. It does wonders!

AH-21/B - Seth

Concept and idea

The AH21/B, codename "Seth", is the latest version of the ATH21/A "Khamsin". Both designs are based on two grand designs. The very first concept model is from the mechanical designer Shōji Kawamori, a Japanese anime creator, screenwriter and mechanical designer. His helicopter is known as the "AFH-02B Hellhound", which have his own role in the "Patlabor 2" movie. Second design is made by the digital artist Talros (Daniel Graffenberger), who gives the Hellhound a more modern look in his Patlabor tribute painting.
I have to thank these two artist again. They inspire me and push me forward to do this rework project.

Both helicopter models have its own assets and drawbacks. The original design have a very advantageous feature. It can fold the wings and rotorblades. That enables a transport in a special cargo container. The clearly viewable armament speaks for itself.

The Hellhound is a great looking design, but it have a few disadvantages and want to correct them and add improvements and upgrades. The obvious changes are the switch from a NOTAR-System to a Koaxial-Rotor. Why? Because you cannot autorotate with NOTAR Systems. Military Helicopter need this ability. Other changes: more hardpoints for armament, counter-measures, revolver-cannon, Low-Air-Speed-Data-Sensor, the engines, fuel-probe, real working landing gear, Cockpit etc...

I rebuild over 90% of the old model. That was necessary to give the whole model a more realistic look and a good clue to work with the right dimensions. More details in the discription.

Discription

The AH21/B, codename "SETH", is the latest version of the ATH21/A "Khamsin". The typename was changed, in consequence of the grown task profile, from a Anti Tank Helicopter, to a Attack Helicopter, which also fits his role for CP (Close Protection), CCA (Close Combat Attack) and LTPS (Long Term Patrol or Standby).

ASDS modified the frame to reduce the weight and improve the resistance through centrifugal forces during flight. Critical spots, like the new modular cockpit section, fuel tanks, main gear and engines, were reinforced with armor plates and special ballistic plastics. The MCS (Modular Cockpit Section) have a new armored frame. The windshields itself, resists projectiles up to 20mm and is vacuum-metalized with a nano-regulated amorphous alloy, that protects the pilot and weapon operator from a variety of laser beams and dazzle effects.

ANTARES equipped the SETH with a huge band width of counter measures and sensor phalanx. Active jammers, stealth hull protective-coating to reduce a successful radar lock on, CFES (Chaff/Flare-Ejector System) and six RALB-Detector Prism (Radar and Laser Beam). Two EEU (Electronic Eye Units) gives Pilot and Weapon Operator a 360° view around the helicopter. The ARRG (Active Radar Recon Gear) can be used to identify targets control non-autonomous guided Air to Air/Air to Ground-Missiles. ASDS added a new HSDM (Heat-Signature-Distortion-Module) at the engine exhaust.

ASDS also give the Bravo version new increased-power rated engines. This step was necessary to compensate deficits while using the CDFU (Cyclone Dust Filter Unit) or during high altitude missions. Nevertheless, the engines have enough power to transmit into the main gear, that drives the Coaxial-Rotor with all six SSP-Blades (Sub- and Supersonic Profile). Using a HiRCoR (High Rotation Speed Coaxial Rotor) was a courageous step, because of the high maintenance effort, but it also gives the SETH a unreached maneuverability for this helicopter class, very high takeoff weight and speed in each direction.

All high power-reserves have a price. To prevent the SETH getting out of fuel during longer operations or ferry flights, the helicopter is equipped with a fuel probe to dock on tankers. In addition to that, the ground crew can optionally mount one or two tanks instead of a effector pack at the inner hard points.

The AH21/B can carry and manage (without the main cannon) six, independent from each other, effector packs.
Available effector packs are MAAS-Dragonfly (2x per mounting bracket), 75mm MPR (38x per mounting bracket), MP-AA/AG-Swarmer (16x per mounting bracket), AG/AT-Missile (5x per mounting bracket).
Softwaremods at the MFCU (Main-Fire-control-Unit) allowing to use other effector packs

ASDS and ANTARES replaced the old 30mm rotary cannon through a new select-fire, dual-feed, 30mm Revolver Cannon (AtGRC30). That allows the Weapon-Operator to use two different ammunition types. Overall, the cannon is technically caused, lighter, service reduced and more accurate.

This project started really as a quick sculpt in ZBrush over a couple of hours during an evening. As the sculpt turned out well enough, I decided to finish the piece. I've been working on and off it for the last two months in the little spare time I've had.

I started out with a very rough model in modo which had the correct scale and proportions. I then brought it into ZBrush where I really defined the design. Once I was happy with it, I retopologized it in modo, where I also did my UVs, along with UV Master in ZBrush. I had to redo the topology several times until I was satisfied. At this point, I brought it back into ZBrush to finish off the details. This took a while. I then brought the fish into Mudbox for texturing, which I find to be an excellent application for texture painting. Once the texture was working, I painted a variety of maps, including SSS color, SSS amount, specular and so forth to really control the shading. I brought it all into modo for shading, lighting and rendering. I split it into two passes and composited it all in Photoshop.
