What is a biped walk-cycle?
Biped is a character that uses 2 legs to walk around on, creating a walk-cycle animation clip.
– amount of pictures needed at specific frames in time to create movement on the time-line.

The sample walk-cycle of Gogo Dlamini mainly focuses on her body and legs animation.

When planning your walk-cycle, keep in mind that there are 4 pictures in 1 step, and a walk-cycle requires 2 steps, therefore the 2D animator will need 8 pictures in all to complete the walk-cycle.

Animation Break-Down!!!- Step 1 and Step 2 both work with the same principles, except that the characters legs will be opposite to one another.

Picture 1 : Contact Pose –
The characters body must pass over onto each step, therefore creating contact between the left and right feet with the ground. When the hind leg is bent and on its toes, pushing the characters body forward, the front leg is leading and catching itself by resting on the foots heel.

Picture 2 : Down Pose –
The front foot is now flat on the ground and the leg bends forward to catch the characters body which is now at its lowest point. The hind leg also bends forward, and the foot is on its toes with its heel up high, getting ready to lift.

Picture 3 : Pass Over –
The front foot is flat on the ground and its leg is now positioned straight, lifting the characters body up as if standing. The hind leg is now lifted up and forward off the ground, bending the leg back and allowing the foot to relax in the air.

Picture 4 : Up Pose -
The straight leg now slides back and lifts on its toes to push the characters body up to its highest point. The bent hind leg lifts up infront of the body and allows the foot to be carried forward through the air to connect with Step 2's Contact Pose.

Rinse and Repeat to create both Steps 1 + 2. Complete the walk-cycle by placing the pictures on 2's, 3's or 4's on the time-line for different speeds, feels and moods.

To create a loop from a walk-cycle make sure that "picture 8" joins with "picture 1" in the end, otherwise the pictures will haak, wobble, glitch and look wrong.
i.e. Step 1 joins to Step 2, and Step 2 joins back to Step 1, and so on and so on, creating a loop.

If you are creating a more advanced walk-cycle where the character is walking around in a room with 13 different steps, then a loop will not work because the animator will have to draw or create about 52 pictures needed to blend the many different walking and stepping actions of the character.

In 2D animation, the world works with layers which makes the pictures move and settle infront or behind another picture. The different layer orders are top layers, middle layers and bottom layers.
This article is an explination to build 2D animation using layers in Flash Pro CS6.

So what is happening in this shot?
It's a kitchen interior of Bongani's house and his sitting by the table ready to eat, holding a knife and fork, licking his lips. Gogo comes walking in from screen left, carrying a pot. She stops and places the pot on to the table. Gogo opens the lid and steam escapes. Bongani looks very excited.

Where to begin building?
There are 6 main aspects that create this shot.
Bongani, the table, Gogo, the pot, the steam and the background.
The background or BG is a picture of an environment that the characters and props will be placed on top of to interact in.

The BG will be placed on the bottom layer, behind all other pictures to create the setting.
Gogo carrying the pot is placed on the middle layer and our cool buddy Bongani Dlamini is sitting by the table on the top layer.

Now Gogo walks in and reaches an obstical, her layer order is behind Bongani's top layer and she needs to put the pot on top of the table.
What to do? Create a new layer ontop of Bongani's top layer and use Gogo's pictures that are needed on to the new top layer, to perform the action.
She reaches for the lid and lifts it, steam exits to finish off the shot with feeling.

The animation pictures were set to 5's on the timeline at 25fps.
