Handshake was a fun film to draw. I consider myself an expert on relationships, and it was great to illustrate the emotions and experiences i've had. The film can be abstract at times, just like real relationships can be. I was fortunate enough to have the film scored and orchestrated live, which I think hammers in the romantic/abstract nature of the story.
                    <media:player url="http://www.deviantart.com/film/65933549/" height="240" width="347"/>

I a come from a traditional 2D background, and broke my thumb on my drawing hand which made stop motion animating quite difficult.
I like to think I did an ok job. I tried to take my 2D principals into this stop motion environment. I was limited to what the puppet could do, and also had to edit the animations in post production because some things just didnt work.

I only had 4 days to produce these, with 2 hours each day.
Hope you like it.
                    <media:player url="http://www.deviantart.com/film/123122609/" height="316" width="347"/>

This video short is a tribute to an amazing unofficial contest we have over at He-man.org called the ‘Fan Staction Contest’ held annually by Thomas Tolman & it brings about the evolution of some of the greatest character concepts ever. The Winner of the contest is transformed into a 6” + statue by Mr. Tolman. I’d like to clarify that all of these are not my original characters, each of them is created by fans at the .org. But I have done the entire Animation completely on my own with a few assists from Patreek Ireland & Andrew Cramer. This Animation has been done with Toon Boom Studio 4.5 & ofcourse Adobe Photoshop CS2 & complied together with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Also I in order to avoid any copyright issues this I came up with a totally different concept that would separate these characters from the MOTU Universe just for this particular intro & decided to name is “Chronicles of the Forgotten Realm.”

I would like to thank every He-man.org member for their support & permission to allow me to use their characters.

Last but not the least I’d like to thank Mark Palenik for creating the original music for this 1:30 min animation with his song “Lost”. Thanks Mark!

Also I forgot to credit for his character Inkshot. Sorry bout that.

Following are the Lyrics to the song:

Lost, I was blinded in the middle of the night.
Which way is darkness and which way is light?

Down to demons shall we bow?
Does it even matter now
as I fight the lies in truths that fall before me?
Like a seed dropped in the sand
as I fight His rightous hand.
If it isn't arrogance, then what could it be?

My cries,
so hated in your eyes,
like they're just lies.

Lost, I was blinded in the middle of the night.
Before me was the darkness, behind me was the light.

So without further adue, Here’s Chronicles of the Forgotten Realm…
                    <media:player url="http://www.deviantart.com/film/118077820/" height="332" width="400"/>

To make my comeback really special though, I decided to animate it. And what a task this was.

I must've spent four whole days working on this piece. I was working on getting the angles right, the anatomy to an acceptable level, and the shading too.

You wouldn't believe how much shading I put into this thing; and I bet you guys can't even see half of it. XD Oh well, it makes it look all the more complete. I hated shading mostly because of how many duplicate layers I made that had her arms shrinking and I had to shade them exactly by the by.

One problem I had during production was conceptualizing Odette's dress, because if I were to do this realistically, her dress would have obscured her as she shrunk down and then this would have become very complicated for me. So I opted out for the more magical solution and simply have the dress get sucked into her.

Finally came the lighting on the ground, the bubbles and the whirlwind. The effects on that whirlwind and the ground were both erratic and a bit hard to manage, since I don't know how to manipulate flash all that much yet.
The whirlwind jiggles madly because I was just too lazy to make that thing any smoother. Drawing all those lines moving inch by inch was a total pain for the WIP, so I didn't want to do it again.
The bubbles were the absolute last thing I did. I studied the Little Mermaid to see how they moved there, and they were surprisingly easy to pull off; just have them shrink and they're perfect.

So after this, I intend to work on more material as I go by. I could also make another transformation like this in the future as a commission, but it'd probably have to be a once a month thing since the amount of effort I put into this is astounding. So if you guys want something like this again, give me the request and I'll give it a shot.

Also, Odette represents a bit of a style change for my polyp designs. I've decided to try and make them look a little more cute this time around. I brightened up their green and decided to go easy on the creepy designs.

But that's not me playing; the music is computer generated via Finale Notepad 2008

Personal Critique:
I probably made the biggest mistake with this when I rendered all 1000+ frames in small, low quality small .bmp files. They should have been rendered as .png files, but it's too late for that already.

The colors, too, it seems a bit clashing. *note to self: use matching color schemes next time!*

Another thing I like to point out is I didn't use the flam3 program for this animation (because I don't know how to use it and there's some error problem with it that I have yet to figure out), rather, I used a combination of the WinDVD creator (solely for the animation) and Windows Movie Maker (solely for applying sound).
_______

Okay, I babble on too much. Comment away
                    <media:player url="http://www.deviantart.com/film/86439751/" height="300" width="347"/>

This piece represents a lot of hurdles and accomplishments from me in the perspective department, and in special effects. And shout outs to for his stellar sound design. If you're an animator who has no knowledge of how to make something sound good, I suggest passing him a note. Or send him an email, at: Jdyoung10@gmail.com

So why don't I start from the beginning, I made this video to be the introduction to a set of walkthroughs on youtube, hosted by Zelda Dungeon. [link]
It is a walkthrough of a popular Zelda mod called, the Lost Isle. A very dark and depressing take on a Zelda adventure, being the equivalent to an entire Zelda game set in the Ikana kingdom. If you're interested, give the mod a run through, it is very enjoyable. [link]

So, getting back to the animation. I asked the webmaster of Zelda dungeon if he could allow me to do an intro animation for him, and he gave me the greenlight almost two weeks ago. Now I just have to give him this final file and we'll see what happens from there. Even if he changes his mind, I still am glad I made this.

Almost immediately from the get go I had an idea in my mind for what I wanted out of this animation. I wanted a piece that focused more on a quiet and eerie environment to match the tone of the game. At the same time, I had wanted something that was a little more dynamic and less flat than the standard animation I make. So I go the idea into my head to make this piece a parallax animation,( or a multiplane animation), to give the piece its more realistic depth. However, in my original storyboards for this piece I had planned for this place to be set on a beach. However, the idea I planned for those storyboards were far too ambitious for someone with my skill level, so I decided to change the location to a forest, to make things simpler for myself.

So after I got the idea in place, I began to plan out my animation for use in Flash, but that did not end well. I was very unsure on how to accomplish such an animated feat in a program like Flash, especially since I was not very adept at using any of the more complicated features of the program. This led me to being in a rut for about a day, until my animation teacher had given me the advice to use Adobe After Effects instead, and boy did that advice work miracles.

I immediately went to work in researching the parallax technique and how it affected the environment. I took multiple notes in attempts to have the technique stick in my mind. I then proceeded to work on animatics for the piece. I designed each layer in photoshop, and arranged them together to make the composition I was aiming for.

Also, at the same time, I had designed a logo for the video, and an idea for how the logo would be presented. I wanted it to be stylish but subtle, engaging enough to contrast with the bleak environments, but subtle enough to not be jarring. So I went with the lens flare, creating the title effect. It was a simple idea, but effective. Actually, scratch that, the Lens Flare certainly wasn't simple, especially not for someone like me. Because I didn't want to buy any plug ins for After Effects, I had decided to use the default one, and boy did that thing look ugly! Thanks to the help of a crafty tutorial, I was able to transform the default Lens Flare into that thing you see in the video there. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done well.

The fire effect was also planned from the animatic stages. I had desired for there to be a sort of background gimmick to the title for this game, much like the other games in the series, and since this game revolves so much around the quiet of the undead, I went for an ethereal greenish flame. I then use a Turbulence effect to get the fire to move realistically for the piece; After Effects pretty much did all the work.

It took multiple experiments with After Effects, but eventually I had gotten everything pretty much correct. I got the timing, the speed, and the logo all pretty much worked out. It was time to move on to the final animation.

I quickly drew up another environment in Photoshop and pasted it into After Effects. From there is was a simple game of replicate the animatic, the only major difference is that I had made was the color scheme, and the fog effect.

I am not particularly good with colors and color theory, so I had a difficult time wrapping my head around the scheme for a dark scene. I eventually went with this dark blue to try and capture the feeling of darkness. And I guess it looks nice enough.

The fog also came next. the final piece was still coming along a little too unrealistic for me to buy as a whole, so I decided to add one more special effect to set the mood of the rest of the piece. The fog was simple enough to implement, and really sets the mood just right in my opinion.

After that, the animation was pretty much done, and I had to get some sound design done. However, I am not a sound designer, and my sound effects were sounding like crap anyways. It was at that point I went on to enlist Joshua's help, and I must say that he did a stellar job in just capturing the mood and feeling of the entire piece. I really implore all you aspiring animators watching this, if you can't make sound for crap, then look no further than Josh, he's got you covered.

----

Looking back at this piece now, I do wish I had gone with a graveyeard motif to match the setting of the game, but that ship has long sailed off, and this is what I have now. Oh well, I think it looks nice for an early attempt at making good animation.

And that's all I pretty much have to say about this. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making this animation.

I shortened the opening live action scene in this reel because it's long and boring and you can watch it separately here in our deviant art gallery. Please let me know what you think. This represents an important fan project I only wish hadn't have been cut off in it's youth. It would have been pretty good.

*EDIT: If you were wondering what the film was about, it was about CNCGB members Gray and Boyer being sucked into the TV and transformed into cartoon characters by an escaped ghost. When I was working on the three page project in the Intro. to Sequential class I had the Vampire Mouse transform, but originally the transformation happened only in the gutters. However, he told me that the reader should see some of it, and so I added another panel to the comic to show off the middle of the transformation. Here's the link to that comic page [link]

So a few quarters later after I took my first animation class I decided to animate the transformation. It wasn't easy. Every body part had to be transformed. It took the entire summer of 2010 to complete.

I would later enter the animation in ASIFA-Atlanta's Roll Yer Own, a festival for independent animators. I didn't win, but it was a great feeling just to see my animation at the festival. Here's the link to the version of the film that I entered, which includes sound: [link]

It's a Ghostbuster fan film starring my buddy Tommy Gray and I. The plot is that a ghost sucks us into the TV, transforming us into cartoons, and we must escape.

No, this isn't the final film, but this is a collection of all of the shots we completed before the film was tossed mercilessly into Development Hell. I shortened the opening live action scene in this reel because it's long and boring and you can watch it separately here in the CNCGB deviant art gallery.

Please let me know what you think. I had problems with the larger file.

I animated this a couple of months ago. I'd had the story idea for a while, but I'd never animated anything this complex. Despite this I went ahead ... and I wasn't too pleased with the result. It includes my first ever walk cycle (with help from online tutorials and animation books!) and sadly the character seems to limp, which is not what I intended. So I stopped working on it. Looking back now, it's better than I remembered - but I know that it's flawed. Thankfully, I'll be attending a year-long course on classical animation from the end of April, and I'm really looking forward to it. This was fun to do, but my own incompetence irritated me. I know I can get better, though, and I'm posting this here as a challenge to myself ...

This was all done using a tablet and working into Photoshop. The animation feature worked very well, though it was extremely laborious to re-use the walk pose on another frame. I particularly enjoyed animating the dying streetlight bulb, though the stars were also fun. For those, I watched the transformation scene in "Cinderella" - there are lots of sparkly bits of stardust, and I wanted to learn how Disney did it! This was the best bit of research I think I've ever done - moving through a Disney film one frame at a time! It's something I'll be doing again in the future.

Done for my Fine Art universty course. What's it about? It's about lonliness and boredom, wanting magic and glamour in a dull and everyday life. And the whole tedious superficiality of it all, ho ho ho! Shown through tin foil voodoo transformations, my friends in funny hats and sparkly things moving about.

Basically, pretentious Fine Art crap to one side, someone makes some little tin foil people and they come to life and do strange things around the house and start being quite annoying and then they go away and there is a nice animation scene with some nuts and bolts dancing and erm, mating.

Watch and you may enjoy. And for more stuff like this watch the very silly COAL PEOPLE, the prototype as such. Inspired by everything from Twin Peaks to Svankmajer.

Want to do more stop motion using photographs now, think I'm onto something there and looking back these are probably some of my best animations, ho hum. Filming on location is not my strong point, it was a freezing cold day and I rushed it like hell. I also wish I'd put a soundtrack on it.
