A redone version of the Apo Museum Gift Shop Christmas.

I made the tree a little bigger and I moved it further back. I also rotated the colors in the Christmas tree to give it a little different look. I know it looks like the other one, but some people may prefer this version. Also, I changed the size and location of the tree, based on 's great critique of the original. She had some very good points. I hope this is better in that regard. Thanks so much, Lea. I love your input. It always helps me improve.

Tree made in Apophysis 7X.Final, Apo Museum items made in Apophysis 2.08 3D Hack and layers assembled in Photoshop CS and animation done in Image Ready with the file exported as a swf Flash animation. I've never uploaded a Flash before. I hope it looks OK.

^{I dont think many people try this approach to abstract, that is, animating it, but I've been working on this style for awhile and this is my best one yet IMO, my last was 15 seconds, this is over a minute, it contains over 200 layers of tweens and masks, the most I've ever used before. Im sorry for the filesize, people on 56k may want to go get a poptart while it loads, but I didnt want to degrade the sound quality at all.

This so far is my best animation. I made EACH frame by it self. Which is like 361 frames ;-;. Took FOREVER. But iz happies ^^ Towards the end i firgure dout how to zoom in and out, so it does that for a sec.. lol.. I didnt feel like doing it over.

Just the rough version of [link] that and I worked on. He did the key poses and I did the inbetweens and clean-up. As you can see here if you go frame-by-frame, I tend to focus on getting abstract shapes to move around before I go into matching all the details.

I made this for my final in Digital Design, our only real guideline was that it had to be a minute long animation that looped and was synched to sound. So why not have fun with some music?

I wanted to do something more abstract than just a narrative, so I went for a kind of fantasia/animusic approach. Originally I had chosen music from Joe Hisaishi; but there were so many instrumentals in it, and the music quality went down so much in flash, that I had to change to something else. So then I thought "hmm, what music do I know that's not demanding sound-qualitywise and sounds good looping?" :3

So the cross examination theme it was. Working on this piece was exciting for me because it's the first time I've ever synced an animation to sound. It was tricky at first, but I got the hang of it after awhile

Anyway, I hope you like it!

A while back I crafted an amusing front-page for my website which randomly arranged and scaled some little abstract bitmaps I'd drawn in Paint, and I liked the effect. Liked it so much that I told myself someday I'd make a little program that produced the same effect all by itself without me having to feed it source bitmaps. This is my first attempt.

It's a little like a living painting, I think. Sometimes it's crap, sometimes it's boring, sometimes there are great little bits in it, and then sometimes it makes you mad because as soon as you see a great bit, it gets destroyed.

Incidentally, there's no category for "abstract generative art" so this is filed under Animation, which probably isn't appropriate, but I'm left little other choice.

(Sorry the file is so big at the moment, I'll try and compress it better later, as Flash seems to be being unfair with compressing today)

This was an animation I've finally finished tonight for a Uni project, in which they wanted us to make a brief, experimental digital animation. I decided to try something a little abstract-ish, and you may of seen the original concept sketch of it in my scraps (If not, here it is: [link] ). Quite simply, it's a musical piece with the animation being an attempt at a visual interpretation of the music (AKA: What the music would maybe look like if it had a physical form).

The main animation was produced in flash, using many layers and symbols, and the final product, including the background made up of 130 progressive photos that go on a loop from my house, was produced in Premiere Pro. I have now grown to like a that program a lot more then the un-user-friendly After Effects, even though I spent hours tonight rendering the film with the colour key not working, only to finally figure out that the settings of the colour key were wrong on the settings it converts to. I would of maybe of added more radical blurs like the end and stuff, but I couldn't be arsed after all them hours trying to get my head around the rendering.

I know the characters shapes and faces are very much like the style I did in my icon and The Fujis, but I'm just using this style as a sort of starting ground for proper animation, as I do want to move on to full human characters and the like once I have enough know-how to do so. Abstract stuff is fun to animate too, however, and I plan to do more pieces like this in the future. Enjoy~

Took an hour, 16 fps, no erasing at all, 316 frames hand drawn, second smalest depth brush at 50% smoothing. What else to say? If you want you can frame by frame it and see stuff that will go by too fast. Some things in there relate to me in a way, I guess you can call it abstract flash. Well, enjoy

Macro Micro: Photo bg project

This is an animation I did for a uni project this year where we have to use a black and white photo for a static background (we were given the theme of "Macro/Micro" for our photos). This is the very same laptop I made it on and am using right now.

I'm gonna say that I am NOT overly pleased with this, for various reasons. First off, the character design is poor. Anime cliché girl who looks like any character from Cave Story, or indeed any noseless chibi anime character ever, and other guy who looks exactly like Claymen or probably a million other similar characters. Second, I made a VERY poor shot choice: the action is all ridiculously small (a fact I didn't become aware of until I saw it played on a normal TV, since everything looks bigger when you're working on it full-screen on your laptop). Please zoom in to see it, seriously, I put a fuckton of work into the actual animation and acting. Third, it's too long. The brief stated 30 seconds, so I did, like, fucking 80. Sure, it's impressive that I did that much work, and I do like that I at least proved I could do it, but I'd much rather have spent half the time on it and come out with something better considered.

I also had a soundtrack to it, but since DA are pooey about using copyrighted music you don't get it. It was "Shackbu" by Plaid from the album "Rest Proof Clockwork", if you're curious. Or indeed if you're not.

I have an abstract animation project from earlier this year that I want to put up, but I can't put it up unless I can get Flash to load it, or DA can accept straight movie files.

Please note that it runs slower than it should, even on my lappy with 1.5 GB of RAM. So imagine it's going a bit faster, lol.

This was a project to create a new intro animation for my Youtube Channel (which doesn't use this yet), and I thought I'd pop it up on here to see what people thought, any suggestions for improvement etc.

UPDATE: I've re-rendered and re-uploaded the animation based of feedback I'd recieved; I've changed the ground material to animated water, which I think works a little better.

Obviously this wasn't created in Flash but I can't seem to upload swf files to any other category... wish they'd fix that...

Modelled in 3ds Max 2012, rendered with mental ray, encoded with Flash C55.5

Aaaand here's the final version of project 2 for digi cel.

We had to create a 15-30 second music video using abstract shapes or recognizable symbols, using the tools in Flash (they couldn't be imported or whatever). They could be anything, from a person to just a shape. And the piece had to be to music and capture an emotion through motion and symbols, possibly even tell a short story.

These aren't existing characters of mine or anyone else's. I just drew them.

But yep! I dunno what else to say. We're doing a walk cycle next. And...a walk is the next assignment in my action analysis class, too.

So I will have done 3 different walks during this year. Not counting the T-Rex walk, because that was 3D. ... *headdesk*

I apologise for my recent prolonged lack of submission, I have not had the time to think, let alone create. Life is moving so quickly now, things are built and broken so quickly now, lights are so bright now, and the darkness all consuming now.

This is an older render, given a revamp with a very quick reflection animation. It's all I've had time for in... months really. It is to my detriment that I can't spend more time creating works, but I do try to maintain my contacts, and check my messages and look at all the wonderful works you have all been producing, and I lament that I have not the time to comment.

***LOWER YOUR VOLUME***
Lower your volume to make sure the opening audio doesn't blow out your ears (it starts right away). There are softer parts but they can either be heard as being softer or you can raise your volume and guess when it'll get louder

Still haven't figured out loading screens and all that jazz so it starts right away P:
It also will begin again right after it ends.

I originally started this near the end of second semester this past school year. I wanted to try my hand at Flash some more and it didn't work out too well (mainly due to me being lazy and having a bunch of other, harder to pass classes I had). I started to get into sound work a bit more as I worked on the audio for this which, originally, wasn't supposed to be so abstract. The animation was also supposed to be more illustration-based but I found little time to do that.

I unburied the Flash file from my hard drive today and started working on it again. ...3rd or 4th time working with Flash now? hmm.

Animation/Graphics Info

I had a picture I started working on that was going to be Higurashi fanart but never finished. I enjoyed the silhouette of the cicada and used it as a layering device here. Please ignore the white spot in the background color (Flash didn't seem to want me to fix it ever).
I just played around a bit with the text movement. I never really planned on this being a completely finished piece in the first place so I left out the visual text that goes along with the second round of 'Didn't knows' near the end.

Sound Info

The biggest part of the piece is the sound. I wanted to make an artsy remix of the 'You'/'Dear You' songs from the Higurashi series. The original files I had were more copy-pasting and editing from actual songs which I trashed in favor of playing the music myself and creating my owns sounds.

> Cicada sounds are from various sources online and merged together (if I was able to, I would have redone the cicada sounds as the ones I hear in my backyard right now, but I do not have the right programs here to do that).

> This piece is first and foremost surround sound but was reduced to a stereo track (parts that sound a bit wonky are due to the fact I wasn't able to create a stereo version before leaving school for the summer).

This desktop object is a work in progress - its just a flash file to show how it functions. Please leave a comment if you like it or have suggestions.

3/28/08 - Sound added

3/27/08 - icon under glass areas doesn't stay blank when lit

3/24/08 - The spinners make the icon light up. brightness depends in the speed of the spinner. The frame rate was bumped up a bit fro smoother movement. The IE icon inside will give you an idea of what the other icons will look like.

2/20/08 - glass spinners accelerate on mouseOver and decellerate when the mouse leaves the button. When you click on it, the spinners glow and stop - The faster the are spinning, the brighter they glow when clicked on. It works like hitting the breaks

Now it is specifically made to act as a Desktop icon widget - multiple instances of them running won't use alot of CPU.

Not only that, but the glass pieces behave more like glass, rather than a transeparent movieClip. Unlike most desktop wedgets or any kind of 3d-flash (which use a filmstrip-like PNG file with 90 pre-rendered frames from a 3d app) this object uses 5 single-framed PNG files for each object/layer, and will do every button state animation with actionScript with almost no tweens (the glass object is just moving with actionScript, and magnification and reflection was done with masking.

Finally! I have an animation to show you guys! I just pulled off an all-nighter to finish this, but when I turned it in the teacher said I got an easy A

The assignment was to create an abstract animation to go along with an instrumental section of music. Vocals were only allowed if they were non-verbal. I chose A Call to Arms, by Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. They are an awesome group, you should check them out (and also their previous incarnation Streetlight Manifesto)

I learned a lot about flash in making this, including some semi-advanced programming techniques. I put a lot of effort into this, and even edited the song myself so it has a logical beginning and end without being too long. I hope you enjoy!

I've used a software that turns an image into musical notes, then, I've retouched those notes with FL, using some common musical sense... and voilá... this is the result.

It sounds kinda creepy... it reminds me to Silent Hill
