I bet there are no foreigners who knows about this fact, but what about Italians? Any of you know? Why isn't someone raising his hand? ;_;

The draw and, most important, the guys' clothes, are based on an illustration I found in the net that apparently comes from a war magazine. NO idea which one.

History:

We're in World War 2. Germany has invaded the URSS on the 22th of June 1941 and Italy had joined for the ride with its Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia or CSIR (Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia) under general Giovanni Messe. When in 1942 Mussolini decided to send more troops in Russia the CSIR was turned in 1942 into the Armata Italiana in Russia or ARMIR (Italian Army in Russia) also known as the Italian 8th Army under general Italo Gariboldi (Messe had opposed to an enlargement of the Italian contingent in Russia until it could be properly equipped because no, the ones that were already there weren't properly equipped, and therefore he was dismissed and 10 divisions, not properly equipped, went to join the ones already there -_-). Among the forces sent in Russia there was a squadron of the "Savoia Cavalry Regiment".

If you're thinking why they're sending the cavalry I'll let you know that, differently from what APH might let you think back then cavalry was used in during world war 2 not just by Poland but also by Germany, Italy, Greece, URSS, Romania, Hungary, Finland, USA, British Empire...
Yes, it was a custom that was going to disappear as tanks could be much more effective.

Anyway the ARMIR advanced toward the right bank of the Don River which was reached by July 1942.

Then, on the 20th of August a massive Soviet counteroffensive snapped suddenly: the Russians crossed the Don and broke through the border guarded by the Sforza Infantry Division. The Savoia Cavalry Regiment received the order to contain the enemy's advance, moving into the area between the villages of Jagodnij and Čebotaresvskij, to attack on the side of the Soviet troops.

So we reach the dawn of the 24th of August. The Savoia Cavalry (consisting of 700 knights), who had bivouacked in the middle of the desert, in a square, protected by the guns of Voloire (batteries on horseback), was preparing to resume the march towards the area assigned, the share 213.5.

Howeever during the night three battalions of the 812th Siberian infantry regiment (812 strelkovyj polk) (consisting of about 2,500 soldiers which were part of the 304 th Infantry Division (304 strelkovaja divizija) under commander Serafim Merkulov Petrovich of the XXI Army), had managed to entrench themselves in holes, among the sunflowers at around a kilometer from the camp, waiting for dawn to attack the Italian troops.

Before leaving the camp, at 3:30, the Italians sent on a reconnaissance patrol on horseback commanded by Sergeant Ernesto Comolli and, almost by chance, a member of the patrol, Corporal Aristide Bottini, noticed a soldier stationed among the sunflowers. Thinking he was a German ally, he called him ("Kamarade!") and, as the soldier turned, he showed the Soviet red star on the helmet, revealing his identity. The soldier was killed immediately but the Soviets responded with an angry fire of mortars and machine guns.

The Savoia Cavalry (firmest and best trained department of the Royal army) didn't get impressed and remained in place, discovering the banner as the tradition requires to show they accept the battle.

The guns of the batteries on horseback responded to the enemy fire and pushing the Soviets to withdraw their deployment, too close to the Italian lines. Aware of the Soviet maneuver, the Second Squadron, charged the Soviets on the side in serried ranks drawn swords the enemy, also launching bursts of machine gun and hand grenades.

The Soviets, taken by surprise, were disrupted and retreated.

The Second Squadron now isolated behind the enemy line, performed a second charge to return in its lines, thus increasing confusion into the Soviet camp.

Meanwhile the Fourth Squadron dismounted and engaged the enemy frontally, to ease the pressure on the Second Squadron assembled. The maneuver had success but although part of the Russian forces was in disarray some were still resisting, causing substantial losses among the ranks of the Italian knights so the Third Squadron charged as well. The cavalry charge broke the resistance of the Soviets, who finally withdrew.

Around 9:30 the fighting was practically finished. Italian losses were 32 dead knights (of which 3 officers) and 52 wounded (including 5 officers), a hundred horses out of combat.

The Soviets left on the field 150 dead and about 600 prisoners, in addition to 4 guns, 10 mortars and machine guns and 50 automatic weapons.

It seems this action was praised by the German forces who also commented 'they didn't know anymore how to do those sort of things'... which is sadly ironic as it implies that, although the Italian forces did well... it's also an indirect confirmation of the backwardness of the techniques of Italian war.

The bold and daring action contributed to easing the pressure of the Russian offensive on the Don front and allowed the reorganization of Italian positions; Soviet troops, however, were able to consolidate the positions won beyond the Don. In winter the Russian counteroffensice will start in full stopping any further Russian invasion and forcing the axis forces to retreat.

Although at the time the charge of Isbuschenskij became soon pretty popular especially due to the Italian regime's propaganda, in the end, from the military point of view, it was only a skirmish and now it's mostly forgotten and remembered only due to the fact it was the last Italian cavalry charge against enemy soldiers (there will be another succesfull Italian cavalry charge on the 17th of October 1942 in Poloj but it'll be against Yugoslav partisans and that too goes equally unmentioned because, although the Italian side fought well, won, caused many loss and was praised for all this, if the higher up had ordered a different approach to the battle, the Italian losses could have been reduced).

In 1952 whose facts were trasposed in a black and white movie, "Carica Eroica" (Heroic Charge) by Francesco De Robertis. The film has recently received a prestigious award, as was shown between the four films that have opened the exhibition of war films, curated by Maurizio Cabona, for the celebrations for Armed Forces Day November 5, 2008 at the cinema Trevi in Rome. This movie belong to the Neorealismo Italiano (Italian Neorealism). If you wanna see bits of it go here.

Curiosity:

Even if the charge is called 'Charge of Isbuschenskij' actually Italian forces never entered in Isbuschenskij, a small village. It's just the charge took place near it.

It seems the banner of the regiment didn't take part to the charge as my draw seems to imply but remained in the camp.

The Savoia Regiment Cavalry had birth in 1692 and its annual festival falls on August 24.

You might notice how the Italian uniforms include a red tie. It seems the red tie is due to the fact that in the past (1706) a Savoy's knight managed to race back to his commander to bring his news of the victory despite having his throat cut, wound that'll cause him to die short later. That's also why the motto of the Savoia Regiment Cavalry is 'Savoye Bonnes Nouvelles'.

Recently, Georgian President decided to show that he was not going to tolerate it any longer and send troops to take over South Osetia. There were Russian peace keeping troops in Osetia that got killed trying to protect the innocent civilians. Russia sent more troops to stop the genocide. Georgia continued the offensive. It is still not clear what Georgia will do further. Russia will protect the Osetians. The only way out for Georgia is to call the offensive off.
(I apologize I only know information about this war with Georgia and a part of russia, I know that these two countries have strong conflicts other than this war, but I still have more research to go.

Russia (PERSONALLY)- Georgia despises Russia with a passion. He does try to avoid Russia at times. Due to their dark past -and if given the chance- Georgia will stop at nothing to try and humiliate or weaken Russia. Though, Russia dislikes Georgia, he does bully him, and they argue. Georgia does talk big about Russia, insulting him in any way, even face to face he would. But deep inside he'd be thinking 'I'm such an idiot! Russia's going to kill me, why am I doing this again? Russia looks so scary!' He will often make up an excuse to leave.

Turkey- Being close neighbors, Georgia and Turkey are good friends. They often visit each others houses, and just drink to their hearts contempt. Occasionally when Georgia visits Turkey, he feels useless when him and Greece get into fights since his friendship with Greece is also on the good side. Turkey recognized Georgia's independence on december 16 1991.

Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania)- Georgia can sometimes be seen defending the Baltics when Russia comes up, but it mostly ends with him being mentally scared away. During the Russo-Georgian war, all four of these countries strongly supported Georgia. Hell, mentally, Georgia acts and thinks like a Baltic nation. Always afraid of Russia, and shivering at hearing his name.

America- Georgia and America don't hate each other, or love each other. They are good friends. During the Ossetia war, America supported Georgia, making up rumors on how the war started, claiming Russia as the bad guy. Georgia was thankful, the two countries even started going out for drinks more.

This Georgia OC (c) Blazing-pancakes
Hetalia (c) Hidekaz Himaruya

Canada provides assistance to Albania in an anti-personnel mine destruction program, and contributed expertise, training and Cdn $500,000 to help the Albanian military to destroy some 10,000 tonnes of small arms and light weapons ammunition. To date, Canada has contributed $500,000 to this project. Canada’s exports to Albania in 2007 amounted to $13 million, while imports were $2 million.

China::
From the 1960s onwards, the People's Republic of Albania under Enver Hoxha, moved an annual resolution in the General Assembly to transfer China's seat at the UN from the Republic of China to the People's Republic of China. On October 25, 1971, Resolution 2758, sponsored by Albania, was passed by the General Assembly, withdrawing recognition of the ROC as the legitimate government of China, and recognizing the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China. Also in 2001, the two countries signed three agreements covering financial, mortgage and technical aspects of constructing a new hydroelectric power facility —to be known as Hydro Central— in northern Albania. China also pledged USD126 million in credit to the project.

Indonesia::
Diplomatic relations between the two were established May 4th, 1994. Although the official diplomatic relations is still relatively young, both of them have been enjoying good political relations, including on multilateral forum. Also, Albania supported Indonesia's bid for non permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for the period 2007 to 2008.
Israel::
In 1999, during the Kosovo war, Israel took in Kosovar Albanian refugees, and provided them with medical care, food, and accommodation.

Pakistan::
The two have enjoyed close and friendly relations. Albania has consistenly supported Pakistan for the Kashmir cause. Pakistan offers training facilities to young Albanians bureaucrats in the field of banking, finance, management, and diplomacy.

Croatia::
Albania became one of the first countries to announce officially about recognition of sovereign Croatia the 21st of January, 1992. In April 2009, both of them became full members of NATO at an event which both Albanian and Croatian Prime Ministers attended. Also that year, the two decided to build a joint nuclear power plant together on the Albanian border with Montenegro, who was worried about the plant's environmental impact. The two also have a history of defense pacts, and overall have a good relationship.

Denmark::
After the fall of Communist Albania, Denmark assisted with building institutions and aid to the poor parts of Albania. He also assists Albania with civil socirty and independent media. Albania is part of the Danish South East Europe Programme. In 2206, Denmark signed an agreement to assist Albania implementing the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) protocol and help reduce their emission of greenhouse gasses.

Greece::
After Albanian declaration of independence in 1912, land division between Albania and Greece was finally silved under the force of the Great Powers (Austria-Hungay and Italy) with theflorence protocol. Relations between them did not improve until 1939, with the occupation of Albania by Italy. Greek and Albanian forces came into conflict during the Greco-Italian War, even though during the Axis Occupation of Greece, the Greek and Albanian resistance groups were in close contact and even exchanged information about the Nazi occupation forces. After the fall of communism in Albania in 1992, a large number of economic refugees and immigrants from Albania and other formerly communist countries (Including: Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Georgia.) arrived in Greece, mostly as illegal immigrants, to seek employment. Albanians in Greece comprise 60% to 65% of the total number of immigrants to Greece. ((Dis you know, that according to the 2001 census, there are officially 443,550 holders of Albanian citizenship in Greece?)) Today, their relationship has significantly improved; they signed a friendship, cooperation, good neighbourliness, and security agreement the 21st of March, 1996. Also, Greece is Albania's main foreign investor(Having $400million+ in Albania.] as well as Albania's second largest trading partner, and fourth largest donor country.

Netherlands::
during the First Balkan War. The leading European powers of the time recognized Albania's independence at the 1913 London Peace Conference, where it was decided that the Dutch would take responsibility for internal security. This led to the Netherlands deploying military personnel to help set up the gendarmerie of the Provisional Government of Albania. The Socialist People's Republic of Albania started their diplomatic relations with the Netherlands, and eight other Western European countries, in 1970. In the early 1990s the socialist regime collapsed, and while Albania turned to democracy they had no previous experience of implementing it. This led to several years of social and political instability. The Netherlands was able to assist Albania by starting a skills building program in 1999. Groups of Albanian politicians and officials, from both national and local level, would attend the Hague for workshops with their Dutch peers where they discussed the practice of good governance and administration within the democratic framework.

Russia::
Both were members of the Warsaw pact. During the Son-Soviet Split, Albania supported the People's Republic of China. This isolated them from the Soviet leadership. After additional sharp exchanges between Soviet and Chinese delegates over Albania at the Communist Party of the Soviet Union's Twenty-Second Party Congress in October 1961, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev lambasted the Albanians for executing a pregnant, pro-Soviet member of the Albanian party Politburo, and the Soviet Union finally broke dipolmatic relations with Albania in December. Moscow then withdrew all Soviet economic advisers and technicians from the country, including those at work on the Palace of Culture, and halted shipments of supplies and spar parts of equipment already in place in Albania, In addition, the Soviet Union countinued to dismantle it's naval installations on Sazan Island, a process that had begun even before the break in relations. Communist China compensated Albania for the loss of Soviet economic support, supplying about 90% of the parts, foodstuffs, and other goods the Soviet Union had promised. Beijing lent the Albanians money on more favorable terms than Moscow, and, unlike Soviet advisers, Chinese technicians earned the same low pay as Albanian workers and lived in similar housing. China also presented Albania with a powerful radio transmission station from which Tirana sang the praises of Joseph Stalin, Enver Hoxha, and Mao Zedong for decades. For its part, Albania offered China a beachhead in Europe and acted as Communist China's chief spokesman at the UN. To Albania's dismay, however, Chinese equipment and technicians were not nearly so sophisticated as the Soviet goods and advisers they replaced. A language barrier even forced the Chinese and Albanian technicians to communicate in Russian. Albanians no longer took part in Warsaw Pact activities or Comecon agreements. The other East European communist nations, however, did not break diplomatic or trade links with Albania. In 1964 the Albanians went so far as to seize the empty Soviet embassy in Tirana, and Albanian workers pressed on with construction of the Palace of Culture on their own. Since the 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence, Russia has mainly backed up Serbia, which had concerned Albania about their relationship with Russia. However the relations between the two countries begin to improve through the organizations they are a part of. (Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (Albania is a member, while Russia is an observer state), and the Council of Europe.)

Turkey::
Relations have been friendly due to cultural and historical factors. The bond between the two stems from historical reasons, especially since many Albanians embraced Islam, the official religion of the Ottoman Empire. To this day, relations between them have been stable, with Turkey being one of the first countries to recognize Kosovo, and with polls showing that Turks are one of the best-received ethnic groups in Albania. However, in November 2010, relations have fluctuated negatively, after Albanian vote for the motion granting Palestine non-member observer state status. ((Did you know, that Albania was the last nation in southeastern Europe to claim independence from the Ottoman Empire? Also, did you know, that as of the 2nd of February, 2010, citizens can visit either country and stay for up to 90 days without visas or any fee?))

United States of America::
Greatly appreciates the U.S. Government's commitment to resolving the political status of Kosovo. In 2003, the two signed a number of agreements, including a treaty on the prevention of proliferation of weapons of mass destrution and the promotion of defense and military relations; the Adriatic Charter; and an agreement regarding the non-surrender of persons to the International Criminal Court. The U.S. strongly supports Albania's EU membership goal (as well as supported Albania's membership goal for NATO.) Albania has supported the U.S. in the gobal War on Terrorism by freezing terrorist assets, shutting down NGO's (Non-Government Organizations) with possible links to terrorist financing, expelling extremists, and providing military and diplomatic support for the U.S.-led actions in Afghanistan and Iraq.

China::

Indonesia::
Israel::
In 1999, during the Kosovo war, Israel took in Kosovar Albanian refugees, and provided them with medical care, food, and accommodation.

Pakistan::
The two have enjoyed close and friendly relations. Albania has consistenly supported Pakistan for the Kashmir cause. Pakistan offers training facilities to young Albanians bureaucrats in the field of banking, finance, management, and diplomacy.

Croatia::

Denmark::

Greece::

Netherlands::
during the First Balkan War.

Russia::
