The Pannonian Plain is a large plain in Central Europe that remained when the Pliocene Pannonian Sea dried out. It is a geomorphological subsystem of the Alps-Himalaya system.

The river Danube divides the plain roughly in half.

The plain is divided among Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

The plain is roughly bounded by the Carpathian mountains, the Alps, the Dinaric Alps and the Balkan mountains.
Although rain is not plentiful, it usually falls when necessary and the plain is a major agricultural area; it is sometimes said that these fields of rich loamy loess soil could feed the whole of Europe. For its early settlers, the plain offered few sources of metals or stone. Thus when archaeologists come upon objects of obsidian or chert, copper or gold, they have almost unparalleled opportunities to interpret ancient pathways of trade.

The precursor to the present plain was a shallow sea that reached its greatest extent during the Pliocene, when three to four kilometres of sediments were deposited.

The plain was named after the Pannonians, a northern Illyrian tribe. Various different peoples inhabited the plain during its history. In the first century BC, the eastern parts of the plain belonged to the Dacian state, and in the first century AD its western parts were subsumed into the Roman Empire. The Roman province named Pannonia was established in the area, and the city of Sirmium, today Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, became one of the four capital cities of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century.

Šumadija ( Шумадија ) is a geographical region in Serbia. The area was heavily forested, hence the name (Šuma - forest). The city of Kragujevac is the center of the region, and the administrative center of the Šumadijski okrug (Šumadija District) in Central Serbia.

The Balkans is the historical name of a geographic region of southeastern Europe. The region takes its name from the Balkan Mountains, which run through the centre of Bulgaria into eastern Serbia. This is the second image of the Story Barn. The oats are now in head and the plants have grown to about 30 inches tall. (First image is here: [link] )

The common oat plant is a kind of grain grown for its seed. The most common uses for oats is livestock feed and makes up a large part of the diet of horses and cattle. They are also used in dog food and chicken feed. A secondary use is in human consumption.

The wild ancestor of the common oat plant the wild oat. Genetic evidence shows that the ancestral forms of the wild version grew in the Fertile Crescent of the Near East. Domesticated oats appear relatively late, and far from the Near East, in Bronze Age Europe.

Oats have many uses as food. They are rolled or crushed into oatmeal, or ground into oat flour. Oatmeal is usually eaten as porridge, but is also used in some baked foods, such as cakes, cookies, and bread. Oats are also an ingredient in muesli and granola.

Oats are occasionally used for brewing beer in Britain. Oatmeal stout is one example in which oats are used as a part of the wort. The more rarely used Oat Malt is produced by the Thomas Fawcett & Sons Maltings and was used in the Maclay Oat Malt Stout before Maclay ceased independent brewing operations.

In Scotland a dish called Sowans was made by soaking the husks from oats for a week so that the fine, floury part of the meal remained as sediment to be strained off, boiled and eaten (Gauldie 1981).

Alqueva is the first site in the world to receive the “Starlight Tourism Destination” certification. This certification, awarded by the Starlight foundation is supported by UNESCO, UNWTO and IDA. Starlight destinations are visitable places characterized by excellent quality for the contemplation of starry skies, and the practice of tourist activities based on this resource.

The region of the Great Lake Alqueva in Alentejo is a wonderful place to see the stars, constellations and distant galaxies such as the Milky Way. The unique characteristics of the night sky with a very low rate of light pollution, in the municipalities of Alandroal, Reguengos, Monsaraz, Mourão, Barrancos, Portel and Moura ensure the ideal conditions for an excellent observation of the dark sky. In Alqueva the sky has good atmospheric conditions for stargazing most of the year. Such skies are disappearing in Europe, where most of the population has no longer the privilege to observe an unpolluted sky.

Alqueva is a unique region very rich in cultural and natural heritage with, various visible megalithic remains whish suggest that our ancestors symbolically valued the landscape, relating it to the diversity of celestial movements, small picturesque villages and opportunities for to develop different tourist activities that could start during the day and extent during the night. The experiences implemented through an Alqueva Dark Sky Route allows tourists to undertake several night activities such as stargazing, bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife observation, canoeing, dinners on the lake shore, activities with children and even wine tasting.

The herdsmens settlement is known as one of few the settlements of such size in Europe and attracts many visitors throughout the year. It is distinct by its typical architecture which symbolises Velika planina. The roofs are covered with pine shingles, which extend rather low. The name of the cottage in the Kamnik part of Velika planina is a herdsman hut or a shephers home, and a pine shingle is called inkel.[link]

This image is a labor or love that's taken more hours that I care to think about and unfortunately it isn't 100% completed. It is made up of 36 photos that were processed in Photomatix to create 12 HDR photos that I stitched together with PTGui Pro. I'm releasing it so that I can get some feedback about the picture as it. The countryside of Inishmore near Dun Aengus is one of the strangest I have come across in Europe. It is made of up countless rocks ranging from golfball to small bolder size. Lining the rocky land are stone fences constructed generations ago, although they are changed and fixed to this day. These fences were created to separate farmland and house livestock. The plots are arranged and dispersed to locals. Two plots next to each other might not be owned by the same person and the community gives out land equally in order to guarantee that each farmer has equal amounts of good and poor land. Such an amazing place.

If you saw the real thing you wouldn't believe the picture could look so good there are railroad tracks and factories all around this river and the water is really polluted, I just found a good angle and was happy to see the results!

My first and best attempt (at the moment) at making a DOLMEN look 6000 years old......

A dolmenis a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb, usually consisting of three or more upright stones supporting a large flat horizontal capstone (table). Most date from the early Neolithic period (4000 to 3000 BCE). Dolmens were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a barrow, though in many cases that covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact.
It remains unclear when, why, and by whom the earliest dolmens were made. The oldest known dolmen are found in Western Europe, where they were set in place around 7000 years ago. Archaeologists still do not know who erected these dolmens, which makes it difficult to know why they did it. The most widely accepted theory is that all dolmen are tombs or burial chambers. Human remains, sometimes accompanied by artefacts, have been found in or close to them, which allowed a scientific dating. There is however no firm evidence that even this theory is correct. It has been impossible to prove that these archeologic remains date back to the time when the stones were set in place.
Dolmens can be found across Portugal, from simple ones to the more complex examples of megalithic architecture, such as the Almendres Cromlech or the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro.

_{Wildschönau translates from German as "wild beautiful valley". The Wildschönau valley in the Tirol region of Austria really is quite pretty. We stayed in the village of Niederau, the first village of the valley and travelled up and down the valley every day.

Niederau is home to the Markbachjock gondola, which takes you up to the top of the hill and back down again if you don't want to walk. It makes a nice change from having to walk up all of the hills like I had to in Dufton, NW England quite recently. A short walk from the top of the gondola was this chapel. It had a beautiful glass window in the back made from solid lumps of coloured glass rather than panes.
