Super Panorama - Pittsburgh

A large panorama of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The image consists of a total of 47 individual photos, about 12 photos wide by 4 photos high.

Processing time was roughly 7 hours as the stitching program I used doesn't automatically stitch together photos that are stacked on top of other panoramas.

Final full size of the Panorama was 33894x7009.

Due to reasonable constraints, the full size is not available. It is, however, available at 60% size (17998x3722) and available for download (Please check it out full view!)

Liège-Guillemins train station is the main station of the city of Liège, in eastern Belgium (Liège is the 3rd biggest city of the country). It is one of the most important hubs in the country and is one of the 3 belgian stations on the high-speed train network. The station is used by 36,000 people every day.

Sur-rail - Surreal, and rail...

This another shot of Fort Canning Tunnel , the same place where I made Joint Flow and Space Age.

The concept on this one is that I inverted the photo and the structures originally above, somehow work when placed below like that. The lighted path resembles a futuristic railway track of some kind.

The slanted angle is intended to provide a sense of movement as when turning left at high speed...the body will slant to the left. Thus aiding the entire scene in which flow is the emphasis (the lines and the way they flow together into one point).

On the other hand, the light trails close to the road surface which is ceiling now, can actually be explained as the lights on the top of the vehicle, the train for example which runs on the track blow, if you allow yourself a bit of forgiving imagination!

One of my favorite aspects of photography is the ability to paint an abstract picture with the lighting available to you in everyday situations. It allows you to capture a more conceptual aspect of a scene, instead of just one specific moment. When you learn how to limit and exploit the light around you, you begin to open up a whole new world of photographic opportunity. It allows you to turn an ordinary picture into something that has much more to say.

No photomanip besides black and white, and slight contrast adjustment. I also cropped a small amount of the sky out, as I always leave room enough in the original comp. to print at 35mm format. In this shot I used an ND8 filter to limit the afternoon light coming into my lens. This allowed me to do a longer exposure, and create a message of travel and speed, as the evening commute train passed me by. Just because photography is a single static image, doesn't mean you can't capture the world of motion and dynamic change. I hope you will enjoy this piece

Technical:
There are several ways to capture a shot of a moving object. The simplest is to approach it late at night, or late evening, when light is low enough to obtain naturally long shutter speeds without the use of extra equipment or filters. This and any type of photography of moving objects requires a tripod though, so that the rest of the image (not moving) remains sharp and clear.

This image was taken early-evening though, when lighting is strong enough that automatic camera modes will still be fast enough to capture a fast, frozen image. To counter this (allow myself to do a long exposure), I used a Neutral Density filter, which lowers the light coming in signifigantly enough to require a long shutter speed for a properly exposed image (anything over 1/60th of a second). I also increased this further by using a high aperature, of 22. All in all, I needed an exposure of 1.5 seconds to obtain a properly exposed image at this point. This allowed the train to make a sizable trek across the frame before the image was through being taken, and in the end, give me a photograph of a train in quick motion.

Even at this point, there are multiple techniques to obtain different results. A flash could have been used to freeze the train at the beginning of the image, giving more definition to the front, before the motion streaks appear. A rear-sync flash could have been used to freeze the train at the end of the shot, giving a feeling of forward motion, with motion streaks behind it. I chose though, to take a shot without any flah, giving a simple concept of motion and confusion. This keeps any of the frontal portion of the train from being crisply captured, allowing only the cotinuous sides to take shape, while the front is speedily streaked across the frame. The reason for the mid-section of the train appearing more clear than the frontal part is because part of the frame had 'train' in it the entire 1.5 seconds. In other words, the train had already reached that part of the image, and remained there through the entire exposure. The faded blurred parts represent parts of the frame where the train hadn't reached at the time of releashing the shutter, but reached before the 1.5 second exposure was complete.

Managed to find a suitable high abandoned building which me and my mate *james-dolan climbed up and we got this spectacular view. Managed to take quite a number of shots and this is one of em.

Taken in September 2005, by the river Tyne in Newcastle. It's the underside of an archway; a support of the High Level Bridge I think, but I am not sure. This is just one image from several taken that day which have made their way to this site.

This version of the image is radically different from the last one; the monochrome and high contrast work much better than the dingy, depthless brown that this used to be.

For some time this was associated with the writing that now goes by the title of Carbon; and they're still part of the same concept.}

Walking the ten miles of track from Woodbury to my aunt's house in Pitman, it seemed strange to me that though traffic congestion was at an all-time high, this route I trespassed upon, once a vital link for commuters between Camden and Cape Map, seem now all but forgotten about. Originally build double wide, only one set of rails remains today, servicing only the midnight freight. While the powers that be squabble over plans to build a new hi-speed line down the medians of already build freeways that commuters would have to use their cars to get to anyway, the cheap, logical solution (refurbishing the line and stations in towns where more people have easy access) for now remains my undisturbed stomping ground.

The first long-distance auto race in the U. S. was held May 30, 1911, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The winner averaged 75 miles an hour and won a 1st place prize of $14,000. Today the average speed is over 167 miles an hour and the prize is more than $1.2 million. Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the site of the greatest spectacle in sports, the Indianapolis 500. The Indianapolis 500 is held every Memorial Day weekend in the Hoosier capital city. The race is 200 laps or 500 miles long.

During WWII the P-47 fighter-plane was manufactured in Evansville, Indiana at Republic Aviation.

Marcella Gruelle of Indianapolis created the Raggedy Ann doll in 1914.

The first professional baseball game was played in Fort Wayne, Indiana on May 4, 1871.

James Dean, a popular movie star of the 1950s in such movies as "East of Eden" and "Rebel without a Cause", was born February 8, 1941, in Marion, Indiana. He died in an auto crash at age 24.

Crawfordsville, Indiana is the home of the only known working rotary jail in the United States. The jail with its rotating cellblock was built in 1882 and served as the Montgomery County jail until 1972. It is now a museum.

Historic Parke County has 32 covered bridges and is the Covered Bridge Capital of the world.

True to its motto, "Cross Roads of America" Indiana has more miles of Interstate Highway per square mile than any other state. The Indiana state Motto, can be traced back to the early 1800s. In the early years river traffic, especially along the Ohio, was a major means of transportation. The National Road, a major westward route, and the north-south Michigan Road crossed in Indianapolis. Today more major highways intersect in Indiana than in any other state.

Most of the state's rivers flow south and west, eventually emptying into the Mississippi. However, the Maumee flows north and east into Lake Erie. Lake Wawasee is the states largest natural lake.

Indiana's shoreline with Lake Michigan is only 40 miles long, but Indiana is still considered a Great Lakes State.

More than 100 species of trees are native to Indiana. Before the pioneer's arrive more than 80% of Indiana was covered with forest. Now only 17% of the state is considered forested.

Deep below the earth in Southern Indiana is a sea of limestone that is one of the richest deposits of top-quality limestone found anywhere on earth. New York City's Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center as well as the Pentagon, the U.S. Treasury, a dozen other government buildings in Washington D.C. as well as 14 state capitols around the nation are built from this sturdy, beautiful Indiana limestone.

Although Indiana means, "Land of the Indians" there are fewer than 8,000 Native Americans living in the state today.

The first European known to have visited Indiana was French Explorer Rene'-Robert Cavalier sierur de La Salle, in 1679. After LaSalle and others explored the Great Lakes region, the land was claimed for New France, a nation based in Canada.

In the 1700s the first 3 Non-native American settlements in Indiana were the 3 French forts of Ouiatenon, Ft. Miami, and Ft. Vincennes. Although they had few settlers in the region, French presence in Indiana lasted almost 100 years. After the British won the French and Indian War, and upon the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the French surrendered their claims to the lower Great Lakes region.

Indiana was part of the huge Northwest Territory, which included present day Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin, which were ceded to the United States by the British at the end of the Revolutionary war.

Ft. Wayne, Indiana's 2nd Largest city, had its beginnings in 1794, after the Battle of Fallen Timbers, when General "Mad Anthony" Wayne built Ft. Wayne on the site of a Miami Indian village.

Many Mennonite and Amish live on the farmland of Northeastern Indiana. One of the United States largest Mennonite congregations is in Bern. According to Amish ordnung (rules) they are forbidden to drive cars, use electricity, or go to public places of entertainment.

At one time Studebaker Company of South Bend was the nation's largest producer of horse-drawn wagons. It later developed into a multimillion-dollar automobile
manufacturer.

In Fort Wayne, Syvanus F. Bower designed the world's first practical gasoline pump.

Indianapolis grocer Gilbert Van Camp discovered his customers enjoyed an old family recipe for pork and beans in tomato sauce. He opened up a canning company and Van Camp's Pork and Beans became an American staple.

Muncie's Ball State University was built mostly from funds contributed by the founders of the Ball Corporation, a company than made glass canning jars.

Thomas Hendricks, a Democrat from Shelbyville, served Indiana as a United States Senator, a United States representative, governor, and as Vice President under Grover Cleveland. Indiana has been the home of 5 vice presidents and one president.

Peru Indiana was once known as the "Circus Capital of America".

Indiana University's greatest swimmer was Mark Spitz, who won 7 gold medals in the 1972 Olympic games. No other athlete has won so many gold medals in a single year.

In 1934 Chicago Gangster John Dillinger escaped the Lake Country Jail in Crown Point by using a "pistol" he had carved from a wooden block.

Before Indianapolis, Corydon served as the state's capitol from 1816-1825. Vincennes was the capital when Indiana was a territory.

East Race Waterway, in south Bend, is the only man-made white-water raceway in North America.

In 1862, Richard Gatling, of Indianapolis, invented the rapid-fire machine gun.

The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was organized in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1881.

Sarah Walker, who called herself Madame J.C. Walker, became one of the nation's first woman millionaires. In 1905 Sarah Breedlove McWilliams Walker developed a conditioning treatment for straightening hair. Starting with door-to-door sales of her cosmetics, Madame C.J. Walker amassed a fortune.

From 1900 to 1920 more than 200 different makes of cars were produced in the Hoosier State. Duesenbergs, Auburns, Stutzes, and Maxwells - are prize antiques today.

The Indiana Gazette Indiana's first newspaper was published in Vincennes, Indiana in 1804.

The state constitution of 1816 directed the legislature to establish public schools, but it was not until the 1850s that state government was able to establish a public school system.

At one time 12 different stagecoach lines ran through Indiana on the National Road. (Now U.S. Interstate 40)

In the 1830s canals were dug linking the Great Lakes to Indiana's river systems. The canals proved to be a financial disaster. Railroads made the canal system obsolete even before its completions.

Indiana's first major railroad line linked Madison and Indianapolis and was completed in 1847.

The farming community of Fountain City in Wayne County was known as the "Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad." In the years before the civil war, Levi and Katie Coffin were famous agents on the Underground Railroad. They estimated that they provided overnight lodging for more than 2,000 runaway slaves who were making their way north to Canada and freedom.

During the great Depression of the 1930's 1 in every 4 Hoosier factory hands was out of work, farmers sank deeper in debt, and in southern Indiana unemployment was as high as 50%.

In the summer of 1987 4,453 athletes from 38 nations gathered in Indianapolis for the Pan American Games.

The Saturday Evening Post is published in Indianapolis.

Comedian Red Skelton, who created such characters as Clem Kadiddlehopper, and Freddie the Freeloader, was born in Vincennes, Indiana.

The Poet Laureate of Indiana, James Whitcomb Riley was born in a two-room log cabin in Greenfield. He glorified his rural Indiana childhood in such poems as "The Old Swimmin' Hole" "Little Orphant Annie", and " When the frost is on the Pumpkin".

Albert Beveridge won the Pulitzer Prize in biography in 1920, for The Life of John Marshall. In 1934 Harold Urey won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his discovery of deuterium. Ernie Pyle won the Pulitzer Prize in foreign Correspondence in 1944. Paul Samuelson won the Nobel Prize in economics, 1970.

Bologna Centrale is a railway station in Bologna, Italy. It is at the southern end of the Milan-Bologna high-speed line, which opened on 13 December 2008 and the northern end of the BolognaFlorence Direttissima, opened on 22 April 1934. A new high-speed line to Florence opened on 13 December 2009.
The station is the fifth busiest in Italy, with an annual ridership of 58 million.

If, by its visual merits alone, this photo is not appealing enough to you, consider the fact that I damn near got ran over by a high speed train in order to take it. And, if that's not enough, consider the fact that I climbed a narrow and high maintenance ladder to get the vantage point from the top of the rail bridge on a drizzly, wet day. AND, if that's not enough, consider the fact that by the time I snapped the second or third shot, I had a police woman yelling at me to get down. Like it now???

**On a side note, kids from the UK have it sooooo easy! If I would have done something similar to this in my hometown and had a cop yelling at me to get down, I probably would have been arrested for trespassing or something like that. Instead, this woman just lightly punched me on the shoulder (as if she was a buddy congratulating me) and told me how crazy I was.....then gave me directions to the city centre. Yeah, the Britts have the whole "let the youth explore-thing" down pretty good. **

The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington, and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and a symbol of Seattle. Located at the Seattle Center, it was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet (184 m) high and 138 feet (42 m) wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. When it was completed it was the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) and earthquakes up to 9.5 magnitude[citation needed] (which would protect the structure against an earthquake as powerful as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake). The tower has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage.

The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet (160 m), the SkyCity restaurant at 500 feet (152 m), and a gift shop. From the top of the Needle, one can see not only the Downtown Seattle skyline, but also the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay and surrounding islands. Photographs of the Seattle skyline often show the Space Needle in a prominent position, even appearing to tower above the rest of the city's skyscrapers, as well as Mount Rainier in the background. This occurs because the tower, which is equivalent in height to a 60-story building, stands roughly four-fifths of a mile (1.3 km) northwest of most downtown skyscrapers.

Visitors can reach the top of the Space Needle via elevators that travel at 10 mph (16 km/h). The trip takes 43 seconds, and some tourists wait in hour-long lines in order to ascend to the top of the tower. On windy days, the elevators are slowed down to a speed of 5 mph. The Space Needle was designated a historic landmark on April 19, 1999.

Location: Harborview Park, at the foot of the Harborview Medical Center, corner of 8th Avenue and Jefferson Street, First Hill.

Notes and Tips: The park is fairly shabby, with only the views (as accompanied by the continuous, low roar of traffic from Interstate Highway 5) to recommend it. It sees frequent visitors in the form of hospital staff taking breaks. To make full use of your visit, you might like to inquire at the West Entrance Main Lobby of the Medical Center about views from within the building. A positive response might lead to a place where you can look westwards as you were in the park (front desk was not letting me in today), as well as eastwards towards the Cascade Mountains. Harborview Park offers 180º views over the "back side" of Seattle and port. There is quite a good view over the Safeco Field baseball stadium. The buildings along I-5 to the north block views of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains.
Best time for photos is in the AM.

Lessons Learned: The proper control of light when bracketing in manual mode is a skill that needs to be learned. I found today that in the 43+ seconds that it take to shoot a set of bracketed images, the area lighting has changed by a half step. With my new technique of shooting 9 images for one HDR, I noted that I did not have to change the settings because of the change in lighting. But I did find that it is important to watch the in camera light meter to make sure I was at the right shutter speed. But not having to touch the camera after every 3 frames assisted in a sharper finial product.

Darling Harbour HDR

This is a HDR compisite of Sydney's CBD skyline by night, looking across Darling Harbour.

It was made with my little Casio EX-Z850 by taking 8 exposures at ISO100 f/2.8 with shutter speeds 2 f/stops apart from 1/10sec to 2.5sec.

I merged them into a 32bit high dynamic range image using CS3, which I downsampled to 8bit via local adaptation then adjusted using curves.

This is my first attempt at HDR using CS3 with no Photomatix plugins. It is a little over exposed on some of the bright building lights, but that was required to get the colors in the water like I did. Other than that, I think it came up pretty well.

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

The Rijksmuseum is a neo-gothic museum built in the 1885 and houses one of the biggest dutch arts collection of the world. It is located in a small but beautiful park among other important museums such as the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum.

Unfortunately we found the time to visit the Van Gogh Museum, but not this one even though it looked very interesting. We happened to stop by the park twice though, and as I saw this huge pool and the kid playing next to it I grabbed the camera and took a couple of shots: nothing spectacular, but I'm always happy to try composing shots with human subjects since I'm often searching for places and moments when none is around. I was also asking myself how the mom of the baby (sitting next to him, about two meters of distance) could be so calm while his son was jumping and running along that short ledge!

Danger, High Speed Trains-Yeah, Right!

Interesting sign I took a picture of near the corner of King & Roncesvalles in Toronto a short while ago.

Why do I say this? Because compared to the speed that real high speed trains get up to, this sign's intent is full of it. This video shows how fast VIA Rail is compared to even Acela in the USA.

Time for Canada to join the rest of the planet, and get real fast rail.

This was taken in Melbourne afew months ago.

The photo was quite dull in colour, so it has been boosted rather highly with curves, and then gave it a yellowy tinge. Hmm would that make it a manipulation?

I still think the colours are dull, there needs to be more variety, it may have to become a manip soon in that case.

Twilight Empire

OK, so I've been consulting at a large pharmaceutical company in Manhattan for the last couple of months helping them figure out their data integration issues. I am so glad I don't have to take prescription drugs ...

Anyway, this week I got put up at the W hotel on 39th and Lexington and got a room with this as a view. Way too cool. Thank God I had my trusty Nikon handy.

Edit: Updated the image. Because the clouds were moving so fast I had to use a fairly high shutter speed which generates a lot of noise. With some filtering, I was able to reduce the noise a bit.

Grand Rapids HDR

I woke up extra early this morning and went to take some pictures of downtown, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

These pictures are kind of an experiment. I've been learning about HDR photography. In case you are not familiar with this, HDR stands for high dynamic range. HDR photos are comprised of at least 3 different images of the same scene, one underexposed, one overexposed, and one normal. I've seen some really stunning images using this technique. So I figured I'd try it out, let me know what you think.

The river is really high right now. There are lots of ice chunks floating downstream, which created an interesting effect with the slow shutter speed.

Oh, also, I just bought a Nikon D90 so I'm looking forward to using it.
