Northern Black Widow (Latrodectus variolus)

Approach this spider with caution!

The Northern Black Widow is a species of spider in the genus Latrodectus. They are well known for the distinctive black and red coloring of the female of the species and for the fact that she will occasionally eat her mate after reproduction. The highly venomous species is native to the United States of America. The amount of venom injected, even by a mature female, is very small, and when diffused throughout the body of a healthy, mature human, it usually does not amount to a fatal dose. Deaths from Black Widow bites in healthy adult people are relatively rare.

The range of the L. variolus significantly overlaps the range of the L. mactans, but the female Northen Black Widow often can be distinguished from the female Southern Black Widow by the type of hourglass marking on the ventral portion of the abdomen. For the Northern Black Widow, the hourglass is distinct, but is broken (whereas the Southern Black Widow's hourglass is complete) and typically there is a row of red spots down the middle of the back and possibly some diagonal whitish bands on each side; the bands are typically observed on the younger, more juvenile widows.

The Northern Black Widow is typically considered an "East Coast" spider, it occurs from northern Florida to south-eastern Canada. This species is most common in the northern part of its range. It lives in undisturbed woods, in stumps or in stone walls.

The mature female is around 1.5 in (38 mm) long and 0.25 in (6.4 mm) in diameter. She is shiny and black in color, with a red marking in the shape of an hourglass on the ventral (under) side of her very rounded abdomen. There is much variation in female size, particularly in egg-carrying females. The abdomen of a gravid female can be more than 0.5 in (1.25 cm) in diameter. Many female widows also have an orange or red patch just above the spinnerets on the top of the abdomen. The male is either black, or closer to the appearance of the juveniles in color, and is much smaller with a body of less than 1/4 inch (0.65 cm). Juveniles have a distinctly different appearance to the adults, the abdomen is grayish to black with white stripes running across it and is spotted with yellow and orange.

Black Swallowtail On My Hand

Yet another photo of my very first swallowtail. I wasn't overly attached to them, no, not at all! lol I miss my butterflies.

UPDATE: I've just figured out the sex difference between the butterflies. All of my black swallowtails posted are of the female. My first male emerged at night so I could not get a photo of him. I have several photos of my second male, and they might be posted in a few weeks. I currently have two male pupas (brown) and two females (green), and a caterpillar on the way whose sex I don't know.

So my brother, who's an agriculture freak XD, grows corn in the back garden. This year I thought it'd be cool to take some photos before 'harvest' and it turned out that his little 'plantation' swarmed with bugs. He expected me to photograph the cobs and I focused on the ladybirds instead. (I also have a couple of cob shots that I may publish sooner or later, more likely later... ;D)

This shot was taken using the camera Super macro mode in addition to manual settings.

A wonderful blue and black butterfly.

This is not one of those color accent shots with the background in black and white. He was sitting in a dry creek bed of what is known as Selma Chalk. No editing, and some cropping and contrast adjust.

Amazingly close representation of the same type of butterfly, I promise I hadn't seen it before I'm starting to go back through and link to other people's works and I found this!

The Aurorafalter (Anthocharis cardamines) is a butterfly (butterfly) from the family of the Weißlinge (Pieridae). He is hübscheste Weißling of Central Europe.
The Aurorafalter little man is as a spring butterfly with his of wide visible, orange-red front wing corner a known appearance. The reddish colouring gave the name to the butterfly. Since the Roman goddess of the aurora is called Aurora.

The butterflies reach a wingspan from 35 to 45 millimetres. The wings of both genders are white and the extreme point of the front wings is coloured grey to grey-black and is to be recognised possibly in the middle of these wings a small black point. External half of the front wings of the little men is coloured remarkably orange. Because the orange colouring is absent with the female, these are easily to be mistaken for other kinds of the Weißlingen (Pieridae). Then the differentiation occurs with the help of the Hinterflügelunterseite which with both genders an irregular yellowish-dirty-green and white spot drawing shows. With the little man the orange colouring of the front wing top is also to be seen on the underside.

Das Aurorafalter-Männchen ist als Frühlingsschmetterling mit seinen von weitem sichtbaren, orange-roten Vorderflügelecken eine bekannte Erscheinung. Die rötliche Färbung gab dem Falter den Namen. Denn die römische Göttin der Morgenröte heisst Aurora.

Die Falter erreichen eine Flügelspannweite von 35 bis 45 Millimetern. Die Flügel beider Geschlechter sind weiß, wobei die äußerste Spitze der Vorderflügel grau bis grau-schwarz gefärbt ist und etwa in der Mitte dieser Flügel ein kleiner schwarzer Punkt zu erkennen ist. Die äußere Hälfte der Vorderflügel der Männchen ist auffallend orange gefärbt. Da die orange Färbung beim Weibchen fehlt, sind diese leicht mit anderen Arten der Weißlingen (Pieridae) zu verwechseln. Die Unterscheidung erfolgt dann anhand der Hinterflügelunterseite, die bei beiden Geschlechtern eine unregelmäßige gelblich-schmutziggrüne und weiße Fleckzeichnung aufweist. Beim Männchen ist die Orangefärbung der Vorderflügeloberseite auch auf der Unterseite zu sehen.

Another one of the red dragonfly. I know some people said that they've never seem lotus flowers before. So if you didn't know, it's resting on the center of the flower, where the seeds are when the petals fall off. :3

While lotus have many uses as food and tea, dried seed heads are actually commonly used in flower arrangements

The shot was taken in the Herculane area, Romania, a few weeks after Easter

History of the shot
It was the second day out of my 4 day vacation and I was on the peak of a mountain. As I was gazing at the skyline I noticed some red dots hiding in the rock cracks. Upon closer inspection I saw the ladybugs.

I just processed a little the raw photo. There are more to come

Painted Jezebel occurs at all elevations, it frequents open wooded, bush and common in the gardens. It flies all day and even at dusk. It's a slow flyer and often visit flowering plant for nectar.

Wings are mainly white, hindwing have yellow and red patterns on the underside. Black veins are more conspicuous in females. Their brightly coloured underside serves as a warning pattern to predatory animals. Their weak fllight further advertises their unpleasant taste.

The caterpillars breed gregariously on the Mistletoe parasite plants.

Im not sure about the print size. Normally i do not keep the raw file or the .tiff file of most of my shots(except the ones featured in the "butt book") hope this one passes.

My Butterfly

Oh, yes. You read the title correctly. MY black swallowtail butterfly. And that is indeed my hand in the photo, bringing my little darling to sit on some basil in the sun to warm her wings before taking to the air.

I found five tiny black swallowtail caterpillars amongst my dill. Now, we had had a few of them before, but, unfortunately, the wasps took them. I wasn't about to let that happen again, especially not to a threatened species, so I took the little creatures in, put them in a container with wax paper on top (never use plastic wrap because the off-gassing will kill them) and fed them through all five of their instars until they became pupae. Thus far, three have become butterflies, and there are two more to go. This is pretty impressive considering that only one or two caterpillars of any litter survive to adulthood.

UPDATE: I've just figured out the sex difference between the butterflies. All of my black swallowtails posted are of the female. My first male emerged at night so I could not get a photo of him. I have several photos of my second male, and they might be posted in a few weeks. I currently have two male pupas (brown) and two females (green), and a caterpillar on the way whose sex I don't know.

I have also raised four cabbage white butterflies, one white tiger moth, one owlet moth, and another type of owlet moth which I have to release tomorrow morning. This means that I have successfully raised seven butterflies and three moths from caterpillar all the way to adulthood. I'm pretty pleased with myself, so I apologize for gloating.

Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor)

The Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) is found in North and Central America. It ranges from southern Canada across USA to Mexico, Tres Marias islands and onto Guatemala and Costa Rica.

The upper surface of the hind wings of the male butterfly has an iridescent metallic blue sheen. The hindwings also have a series of pale, arrow-head markings above and a single row of seven round orange spots, which never touch, set in an iridescent blue field below. The forewings are dull blackish-brown.

After mating, females lay batches of eggs on the underside of the leaves of a host plant. The caterpillars feed in small groups when young, but become solitary when older. Chrysalis overwinters. The caterpillar of the Pipevine swallowtail is reddish-brown. It has rows of fleshy, red or black coloured tubercles on its back.

Host plants for the caterpillars include the Pipevine (Aristolochia species). Pipevines confer a poisonous quality to the larvae and resulting adults, much as the monarch butterfly obtains protection by feeding on milkweed, or heliconiines by feeding on passion flowers. Adults seek nectar from flowers, including thistles, bergamot, lilac, viper's bugloss, common azaleas, phlox, teasel, azaleas, dame's rocket, lantana, petunias, verbenas, lupines, yellow star thistle, buckeye and butterfly bush.

"The Red Admiral or Vanessa atalanta (previously also known as Pyrameis atalanta) is a well-known colourful butterfly, found in temperate Europe, Asia and North America. The Red Admiral has a two inch (45-50mm) wing span.[1] The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates north in spring, and sometimes again in autumn.
This large butterfly is identified by its striking dark brown, red and black wing pattern. More specifically, the dark wings possess orange bands that cross the fore wings and on the outer edge of the hind wings; white spots on the dorsal fore wings near the front margin; reddish bars on dorsal surface of all four wings The caterpillar feeds on nettles, and the adult drinks from flowering plants like the Buddleia and overripe fruit.
In northern Europe, it is one of the last butterflies to be seen before winter sets in, often feeding on the flowers of ivy on sunny days. The Red Admiral is also known to hibernate, re-emerging individuals showing prominently darker colourings than first brood subjects. "In 1848, English naturalist Henry Walter Bates was studying insects in the Amazon when he found that one butterfly was mimicking the looks of another butterfly, solely to reap the protection of the other butterflies looks. The butterfly that was being copied was known as the Heliconius ismenius. The Heliconius ismenius was being copied by European butterflies known as the pierids, or more commonly called the cabbage whites. The Heliconius ismenius are toxic and non-palatable to predators. They exemplify this by showing beautiful orange and black tiger stripes along the long wings. Predators remember these colors and patterns very quickly when they eat one of these butterflies, which make these warning colors quite desirable by other butterflies. Now, although the pierids were palatable, they as Bates would say were the mockers mimicking the H. ismenius in order to better their survival. This study showed natural selection at its finest."

This is Hummingbird Hawk Moth -- Macroglossum stellatarum

The moth is named after its resemblance to a hummingbird, with its rapid hovering motion as it feeds on the nectar of flowers.

Physical Description
The larvae/caterpillars grow to about 60mm in length. They are very colourful with a green or reddish-brown body with white dots and dark, white and yellow stripes, black spiracles and a blue, yellow-tipped horn. The sexes are similar in appearance. The moth itself is often mistaken for a hummingbird as it hovers above the flowers. The moths have a brown, white-spotted abdomen, brown forewings and orange hindwings. They have a wingspan of 40-50 mm. The wings beat so fast that they produce an audible hum.

Distribution
Hummingbird hawk-moths are abundant in Mediterranean countries, Central Asia and Japan. In the British Isles they can be spotted every year in the summer from June to September and have been recorded as far north as the Orkney and Shetland Islands.

Habitat
They inhabit lowland areas.

Diet
The larvae feed on bedstraw (Galium). The adult moths are day-flyers and feed on the nectar of flowers such as orchids and petunias. They feed by hovering in front of a flower, probing it repeatedly using the proboscis.

Behaviour
Hummingbird hawk-moths are day fliers, preferring bright sunlight, but may also be seen at dawn and dusk and rarely at night. They are strongly attracted to flowers with a plentiful supply of nectar such as petunias, honeysuckle and buddleia. Studies have noted that have a remarkable memory, and return to the same flowerbeds at the same time everyday. They cannot survive the winter months and so migrate to southern parts of Europe.

Reproduction
They breed regularly in the UK. Moths locate their mates by scent, with sight playing a small part. Hummingbird hawk-moths have been seen to demonstrate aerial courtship chases, with the male and female engaging in rapid pursuits low over the ground, or spiral upwards together.

Conservation status
They are not listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Notes
They are an immigrant species, which sometimes occur in large numbers. A large influx occurred in summer 2000, when moths were observed in parks and gardens all over Britain.
