The theme is my original design of the Absinthe Fairy - and it's been on my to make list since 2004.
I got a hold of some Absinthe from the Czech Republic back in 2004 and have really enjoyed this delicate yet powerful green drink since. The myth is that when one drinks enough Absinthe, not only will one be intoxicated, but hallucinations can occur as well - hence "chasing the green fairy".

I've always wanted to do a photoshoot with this theme so finally, now that I have the costume, this may happen soon.

The outfit itself was made from 90% of materials and supplies I had at home already - after all, I've been collecting materials since 2004 lol. All the jewels and beads are glass, I picked them up on a China trip a while ago. I made all the patterns for this costume and spent 3 days on creating the whole thing, only because I didn't have any more time allotted for personal costume making this month. Hence the outfit is a bit rushed and there are some things I'd like to change/add on for the future.

As for the pieces I did make - the wings were sized to fit inside a suitcase and I'm kinda glad they are small enough so I can maneuver easily at a busy convention environment. They are fabric over a wire frame, and embellished with sequins, crystals, glass beads and scattered LEDs that light up a nice Absinthe green. In these shots the lights blend in but I hope to post some darker shots soon where they show up better.
There are also LEDs in the cage for the skirt, and fiberoptic lights in my hairpiece.
The underbust corset/bra are made of layered fabrics that I texturized with various stitching techniques and they are also beaded and embellishd with feathers.
The collar piece and wristlets, and shoes all match as well with similar adornments.
The skirts are made of many layers of fabric pieces that I did a rolled hem on. My serger was getting super hot by the last piece lol.

Photos taken at Fanime 2011 by Paul Tien. Not surprising that I've been wanting to explore this theme for several years now lol. I'd really appreciate if everyone took a few seconds to head over to the Hub and vote for my Daring Do entry. There are not many entries and I could really use your help to make it into the top ten! A breakdown of the designs of each of the MLP gala dresses I did this year, continuing with Rarity!

I will be making collages like these for all the dresses, but until then to see the entire group photo, click here, or here.
See Applejack here.
See Twilight Sparkle here!
See Pinkie Pie here!

Let it first be known that I am 100% aware that I am not a crazy awesome artist like many of my friends, and so keep that in mind when pointing and laughing at the mitton hands.

*********

You make this sound as if it’s going to be hard!
Whew, this one took a while to organize my thoughts on! I really have way too much to say about this dress. Tried to condense the short novel I had originally written into something more concise.

Rarity’s dress was every bit a drama queen as she is (not Betsy, she’s a doll) in the show. It was the trickiest to construct, required the most thought, and took the most time out of all the dresses to complete. Conversely (and oddly), it was also the easiest pattern for me to make and fit. The bodice is steel boned, lined, and entirely flat lined, lined, and encased. The zipper had to be installed by hand to avoid ugly stitching scars in the velvet (it’s actually quite sturdy). The bustle cage I constructed sits under the skirts.

There is a combination of velvet, taffeta, and silk used in this dress. The pink was a sheer embroidered silk that I flatlined against a pink taffeta to eliminate the opacity and increase its strength.

I made dresses…beautiful, beautiful dresses!
Rarity was the one that I chose to get risky with the design. Why? Besides the obvious reason that the fashion diva would be the one to take risks, let’s all be honest: her gala dress was a little silly in the show. It was designed for little girls to think it was amazing, but when they grow up they realize that it’s actually rather garish. I didn’t think it was horrible, but I really wanted it to be amazing, and I thought it had potential to be.

Twilight is the star of the show, but Rarity is our gala ringmaster, and I wanted her presence to be as dominant as Twilight’s. Key words: as dominant. I considered (for like, a half a second) going for a Georgian/Rococo style, and getting all Marie Antionette up in here (you guys, I have a deep, secret obsession with the ill-fated queen of France. I read ALL THE THINGS on her. She is fascinating), but being honest with myself, I knew that a pannier gown would not only dominate Twilight, but over power everypony else as well. And since this wasn’t Rarity’s butterfly wings outfit, I thought it better to keep her in balance with the others.

Really, I knew from the start that Rarity would be flavored Victorian. I already determined that Twilight would be the one with the classic Cinderlla hoopskirt, and I wasn’t going to repeat any silhouettes. The MLP creators did a really nice job at making each character unique in the show, and I felt it was important that their gala dresses reflect that. It was obvious to me, looking at Rarity’s dress in the show, that there was a ton of fabric there – just as much as Twilight’s and Pinkie’s – but that it was more swept back to create a train…or a bustle…or…BOTH?! Awwwyiissss, both. Guys, it’s like the skies opened and the angels came down signing and showering me with Jamba Juice rain.

Because my options were based off of distinct historical trends, however, I realized that regardless of which silhouette I chose, I would need to be careful not to make Rarity’s dress look too much like a historical recreation, which would make her stick out from the group. Rather, I wanted something clearly influenced by it, but that wouldn’t feel time warped at a modern event.

Pinkie Pie, that color’s too obtrusive, wait until you see it in the light!
From this collage, the color difference between my renderings and the physical dress is quite apparent. So are the differences in how the fabric itself can photograph. This was a deliberate choice made for visual balance, and character alignment. But it’s this color variance that had me most concerned about how the dress would be received. This is a great example of how designs can organically evolve throughout their production. As you can see, my rendering intended for the dress to mimic the original colors, but as I fabric shopped, I really struggled to find the right colors in the right fabrics. And for that matter, when I found an option and held it up to swatches of the other dresses (or what I had of them at the time), the colors didn’t mesh well into the group.

It took me a while to pinpoint what was really bothering me about these colors. Though I wanted each dress to be unique, I realized that the six of us needed to look like we belonged together in a group. It was very tricky to keep everyone distinct, but cohesive, and I realized that in Rarity’s case, toning down her colors helped tie in Twilight’s deep blues and Applejack’s dark browns. It also avoided clashing with Pinkie, who already held the monopoly on offensive pink (Fluttershy and Applejack had similar concerns, as we were both in green). I was also really pleased with the deeper wines in this dress because the deeper, richer textures of these colors and fabrics were more in line Rarity’s posh tastes.

Fortunately, the great color risk paid off; the dress has received overwhelmingly positive reviews (although I think a lot of this is because Betsy is just amazingly beautiful), and I attribute part this success to the same reason that I chose these fabrics to begin with: velvet and taffeta are the wizards of fabric. Velvet is deep and plush and the pile absorbs light, while the taffeta catches it. The same dress can look drastically different with different lighting (for example, our outdoor shoot).

What did I get myself into?
In regards to what I would improve upon, I have a small grocery list. My biggest issue has actually already been addressed, as can be seen in Betsy’s AWA photos here, which was the second time she wore this dress: [link] ...but I will talk about it anyway!

When I had purchased this fabric, I made the mistake of assuming that its taffeta in combination with the quilted weight would support itself as long as the bustle was supported with a cage. I assumed that having a full petticoat/bustle cage combination would make her skirt too bulbous and stiff, and I wanted her to be on the slightly more flowing side of structure. More first-round Victorian bustle phase than the later “shelf” bustle. So…I only made a bustle cage. Once the full dress was on her however, I realized I should have gone with my first instinct and I immediately wished I had made a petticoat for her in addition to or as part of her bustle cage, as the front of the skirt just wanted to weigh itself down. Happily, as we saw photos from Dragoncon surface and discussed how to keep the skirt from collapsing so often, Betsy revealed that she had a petticoat that she could experiment with, and BEHOLD! Insta-fix! Never, ever again, no petticoat.

I had wanted a different trim layout on the bodice that would also correlate with some on the sides of the bustle, but by the time I got to that part, I was really down to the wire to finish things had had to start choosing which unfinished bits were more important than others (in this case, I chose to finish Rainbow Dash’s cloud trim, because I felt that hers would be noticed more if not complete).

I’d like another tier of yellow swags on the front of the skirt. I think the cascades needed a second (or stronger) row of horsehair, although the use of the petticoat helps those drape better. The second pair of smaller cascades in the back never were finished (I only finished one, and it seemed silly to put it on without a mate).

I don’t regret not using literal gemstones on the dress; I actually tried really hard to make it work, but the Victorian fashion in general was more reserved and giant rocks just cheapened everything on the actual gown. I feel that the appliqués were a much better choice, but I would have liked to finish putting all of them on, as well as finish glitzing them up a little more. Big rhinestones weren’t working for the dress, but smaller ones would have enhanced the appliqués.

********

The process of building all six MLP gala dresses took about a year to plan and bring together. I believe we all agreed to put a go on Operation Best Night Ever about a month after Dragoncon 2011, where we had debuted our original My Little Pony group. Gala dresses were the obvious next step. I asked the girls if they would let me design and make the outfits, knowing that I was going to both love and regret it later. But mostly love. All my love.

During the design process, which took place between October and December of 2011, I spent a lot of time considering all the different elements. It was important to me to stay as true as possible to gowns as designed through the television program, and yet somehow make them translate gracefully into human interpretations. The real challenge was ensuring that the gowns would also be both flattering and comfortable for each girl.

Some designs were easier to convert than others. Sometimes I found that what I illustrated wasn’t going to translate well onto a body (either because of what it would do to the silhouette, or because it looked too cartoonish), and I had to adjust accordingly.

Design sketch by ~ me!
Modeled by ~ Betzilla!

GUYS!! I'd really appreciate if everyone took a few seconds to head over to the Hub and vote for my Daring Do entry. I'd love you even more if you shared with your friends!
VOTE HERE!

Anyway, here we go!

I had to get creative with how to corporate certain details, like the floral touches and the butterfly. Designing this dress was the opposite experience of Twilight Sparkle, whose dress I could see in my head before pencil ever touched paper. I sketched her three times before I started to like the direction, meanwhile, all the other gala dress designs were completed and waiting to get started. I wanted to give her a wispy, nymph-like look without being too fluffy cheeseball or too sexy.

In addition to being the most difficult to design, this was also the trickiest pattern for me to structure out, and I spent the most time on this pattern compared to the others. Conversely, once the pattern was perfected, it was the easiest dress to build, and was actually the first one completed. Go figure.

Go organic.
The basic look of Fluttershy's dress stayed pretty true to design, but the fabric choices ended up being drastically different than what I originally intended, as well as the details (such as the floral embroidery, all hand cut from originating fabric, and sewn on piece by piece on the handkerchief hem). The only verbal description Rarity gives us for this concept is "breezy", so I originally planned on chiffons and muslins. I didn't easily find these fabrics in the right colors/textures, but started to come across other interesting options, like the very lightweight light/dark tiedye with shimmer, and the green floral embroidered train, and the floral appliques. These new options opened up a different direction for me, one that I felt was very appropriate for Fluttershy: ORGANIC.

Flutterbutt
Once I accepted the idea of organic versus breezy, the dress came together like butta. Less Disney princess, more Poison Ivy. PandaTreats really had the perfect body for a dress like this, and it hugs her and flows from her like a second skin. The cascading floral-embroidered train in back was not part of the original design, but it kind of presented itself (dare I say it) organically while I was playing around with ideas. It's my favorite part of the dress, and because of it, I started henceforth referring to the dress as "Flutterbutt". So much, that now when I begin to type "Fluttershy" in texts, my phone tries to autocorrect it to "Flutterbutt". No regrets.

What I would change for next time
Out of all six dresses, and for all the mental grief this dress caused me in the beginning, I have to say that I really feel this one came out near flawless. If I were to nitpick, I'd say maybe we could reimagine the blue drape, merely because we all forgot about it and PandaTreats threw it together rather last-minute, but honestly...I wouldn't change anything on this dress.

********

The process of building all six MLP gala dresses took about a year to plan and bring together. Yeah, Sogeking. I'm Sogeking! and I'm here to rescue the day! Did I tell you about the one time I fought off a sea king with my eyes closed, my hands tied behind my back and ..."

To date, the hardest cosplay I've constructed. Though, I think that says more about me needing to challenge myself than about how hard this was. Though, is was a LOT more involved than I thought it would be. The breakdown:

Mask: Sogeking's mask is what makes Usopp SOGEKING (ie, Sogeki King, ie sniper king), so i had to get it right. Plus, it looks goofy XD. I bought a plastic mask at michaels, cut the eye holes MUCH bigger, chopped off the fake nose, and cut the chin off so that it could sit higher on my face. I then used clay and some clear lenses that came out of harry potter glasses to make the sniper goggle lenses and super glued them onto the mask (which was a nightmare, because they kept falling off.) I also used bakeable clay in a skin tone darker than mine, but lighter than Usopp's, to roll his "liar" nose. I baked it, stuck it through the nose hole I had made, glued it in, and medical taped it (Usopp is ALWAYS injured, and his long nose seems to be a target). I then poked 9 holes around the edges and fed wire into them, shaped the wire (easier said than done), and paper mache'd the whole thing, pretty much. The paint is yellow, red, silver, and dark blue acryllic and blue and black paint pens. The lenses are plastic. I also added in an elastic band to keep the dark thing on my head, but I had to color it black with a sharpie to get it to blend in with the bandana. It sits pretty high on my face due to the nose having moved positions, and gives me the (canon) ability to open my mouth and have it visibly move my chin. This is the first piece that I hand painted a design onto, because I suck at general drawing and painting and stuff, and I think I came out well.

Bandana: I bought a gray bandana (Usopp normally wears a color between green and brown, which I didn't feel like figuring out and is really ugly anyway. However, every character in OP is seen wearing multiple outfits, and the second common bandana color for Usopp is gray.) Then used fabric paint to add all of the little black lines onto one side of the bandana, so that it would fold into a triangle still.

Goggle Headpiece: I used bakeable clay that hardens into a plastic/rubber kind of material. I fit the 5 pieces to my head pretty easily in their respective colors, baked them, and super-glued them together. My original plan was to have them hold the mask to my head, but turns out the rubber isn't so strong. But they sit atop my head fine. The five pieces were: two off-white ear pieces, one dark gray headband, and two light gray lens holders that I textured with one of my clay cutting tools to give it "adjustable" ridges. (in case you don't know what I'm talking about, Usopp has gone through his own mini story arc about getting these great sniper goggles. When he's Sogeking, the lenses push through the mask, while the headpiece is still attached to the lenses. in this case, I thought it would be easier to attach the lenses to the mask rather than have them move around my face.)

Wig: Usopp has black, curly, shoulder length hair. I have short, straight, pink (at the moment) hair. Luckily, it's Halloween season: ie, cheap things!!! I bought a man's wizard wig, cut off the mustache line, attached an elastic band around it, and put that on as a wig. It works XD

Cape: I used my old High Tech High fleece blanket as a good source of fabric, as apparently that stuff is expensive in large amounts. It's maroon, and Sogeking's cape is Red, but whatever; creative license, different outfits, gets the idea across, and looks nicer than bright red anyway. I draped it around my shoulders and added five buttons. So yeah, not the hardest mod in history XD

Binding: I had to go out and BUY a nude tanktop, because I didn't own one. I also used bandage binding to try to really compress my chest. When I dropped things during the photoshoot, Erica had to pick them up because I couldn't lean over without stopping breathing halfway down. And I STILL got a barrel chest! arg

Over-alls: I couldn't find any pairs of overalls at any thrift stores near my house, so I went out and found a pattern and looked at Jo-ann's for fabric. Turns out, 7yds of corduroy is mad expensive, so I waited until Comiccon to go to Value Village in Montreal. Sure enough, I did manage to find well-fitting (meh) womens (grr) blue (arg) denim (gyahhh) overalls. I then took brown dye to them, only after reading that you can't bleach out the blue in denim without wrecking the overalls. So, now they're very, very dark brown. but that's alright, too, I guess. (they're mad comfortable, though )

Sash: I bought a (again, slightly off color to match the outfit, rather than the ref pics) light green table cloth at Value Village, cut it in half, then hand-sewed the ends together. To get it to sit, I have to roll it up a bit, though the knot stays very well.

Shoes: Bought at Value Village. no mods

Glove: The remains of one of my Ms Pacman gloves! I was being cheap, so I used acryllic blue paint rather than buying fabric paint. So the thing is stiff, but that actually holds it to my arm well.

Slingshot: The slingshot's name is Kabuto, so I'm calling it that. Anyway, I wanted a weapon that I could swing around not so gently, and pull the strings back for pictures. I bought two different widths of dowel, as well as a foam ring from Michael's. I saw'd off the angle into the ring and attached it to the wider dowel by burrowing a hole in the foam and screwing a long screw into the end, and covering the hole with wood putty, super glue, and a smaller wooden post. I sanded away the ring to make it flat for the over 4 posts, and then drilled holes in them and super glued them to the foam, smoothing the joints with wood putty. I then painted the darn thing with primer, hammered metal dark green spray paint, white acryllic to fill in the holes in the foam, and finished it off with more green. I cut the elastic chord into five pieces and threaded them onto needled that were MUCH TOO SMALL. About an hour later and rather bruised and bleeding fingers, the elastic was threaded into Kabuto and tied off. I cut a tan patch of facric, used some left over clay to make a "fire star" sling shot ammunition, painted it red, glued it into the patch, and threaded the elastic lines through that. I'm happy to report that it is decently strong, stretches fine, and is the right height this time. The finishing touch was the medical tape (which is indeed canon).

Man Purse: I bought pleather and a clasp at Fabricville, cut a decent-looking shape out of it, then hand-sewed the purse bottom, and also the strap. It's so convenient that this character actually has a BAG, canon. it's gonna make cons easier.

Make up: NONE!!!!!!

So there's the construction! I cannot wait to enter this into a masquerade. Seriously, I put so much effort into it. Plus, I can't wait to run around a convention as Sogeking, who's even goofier than Luffy XD.

Character: Sogeking (Usopp's alias) from One Piece
Cosplay(er): me!
Photogrpaher: My sister
Location: Cliffwood beach
Editing: me, Gimp 2.0

Related:

Related:

In this comparison image you see a reduced snippet of the photo and of the eventual result, now replacing Sari's original version.

As I was working with the source material this time, it was worth taking a lot more care with things, and I did. The photo was quite underexposed as you can see, and the worst aspect of that was Sari's green top which was almost washed out completely. In fact the only colour left there was a trace of light turquoise. And indeed, turquoise is pretty much all you got in Sari's original picture and my modification of it; I actually thought it was a blue top before! The restored top is basically a combination of boosting what was left of the original detail, adding extra shading very carefully to try and bring out more definition, and getting things the right shade of green. Sari had some input for me on that last aspect, and eventually my green got the official seal of approval. Yay!

The white socks were heavily overexposed too, but at least they're not so prominent. I boosted what little was left of the original detail, added a touch of shading to try and compensate for what the camera had lost, and reduced the glare a bit. At one point I experimented with overlaying some texture from a googled photo of white socks, because Sari's were mostly just blank white. But eventually I decided against that approach, to keep truer to the original photo and to Sari's actual outfit.

Sari was keen to have a good warm glow to her skin, so that's what I went for. It's a touch more orangey than last time and I cut down the strong skin glare a bit. Actually the skin was quite a job because of how underexposed it was. As for the rest of Sari, I coloured things fairly similar to my earlier modification except for her hair. It was really too dark before (with a slight greenish tint as well), and I made it more vibrant this time. Much nicer.

As for the scenery, my old version had way too much of a green cast and now looks quite bad to me! The mistake I made there was in judging it too much against the original. The heavy green cast of the original had made my toned-down scenery look fairly natural, but when I looked at it afresh, I realized that it really wasn't. It still had a green cast. Useful lesson learned! The actual photo gave me better colours to work with - albeit underexposed - and I think I've got a good result this time. More natural and more vibrant. A pleasing backdrop for Finland's finest.

Note: If you want to also compare things with Sari's original picture and my old modification of it, open my old comparison page in a separate browser tab and switch back and forth between the tabs. I bought a furisode (coming of age kimono) at [link] yesterday afternoon after trying on a couple and resting on this one because it's sooo comfortable. Very flexible and easy to breath silk. I got the whole ensemble for about $195 and was very pleased.
The inside of it is dyed "ombre" style (a trim of dye that fades into the white, seen at the bottom center) and the outside is a "shibori" style (or tie-dyed) to make the flower pattern and the little blue dots that are all over the kimono (though impossible to see except on the detail shot in the upper right hand corner). This style is done by tying white thread to the silk so that, when it is dyed, those areas maintain their original color (white). It also makes the silk a very nice, breathable "seer suckerie" texture which can be better viewed here: [link] I'm tentatively dating it back to the Showa period (1926-1989), possibly the earlier years because of the style of this furisode here: [link] since the dying techniques are the same for both kimonos. But I dunno; I'm no expert, and neither is the internet.
The obi has two different sides, depending on which way you wear it (one is seen on the back picture of the kimono and the other is on the closeup of the obi). The original weave was done with the "warp ikats" technique (if vision serves me correctly) to get the really nice blue-green blend background on the edge (only 1 corner is decorated, the rest of the obi is a plain navy blue) and then embroidered to make the cute little thread knot design that, subsequently, matches the knot of the obi-jime (which helps me know I'm tying it right ).
