Q : Where can I get copic markers? Do you have any recommended place?

A : There are several places selling Copic markers. You may check out you local art stores. Or as *SheCow recommendation, go browsing on Ebay. Ebay has more choices and probably sometimes has a very surprised deal! Check it out!

NEWS :: As mentions, "you can get copics from dickblick.com at a discount whereas buying them else where. (discount is at most 40% of the actual cost of copics)

Q : Copic markers are still expensive, Any brand do you recommend with a lower price?

A : Even though Copic markers are the best one for me, I admit that the price is still high. For some of you who want to use other brands, I recommend Neopiko from DELETER. These markers work pretty well and easy to blend like Copic markers (not 100% but yeah, still good enough to use!). And of course they come out with good price. But just keep in mind that Neopiko might hard to find on stores compare with Copic. So if you're interested, check 'em online. Yo!

For Prisma and Tristars markers...I've never used them so I can't tell about how good or tips...sorry about that TAT

Edit: Wet in Wet is : Adding wet colors on damp sheet of paper or an area of still-wet paint, and let them run out over the wet surface, giving soft-hazy effect

Color Theory Crash Course

This is a basic color tutorial. I'm sure a lot of you guys learned this in school, so it's basically a refresher course. Or it's more of a "put one foot into the door" sort of course. This is definitely no where near an end-all-be-all tutorial. I suggest everyone to look up multiple tutorials and draw from many places to learn. I encourage you to continue to investigate color theory, because we never really stop learning.

I've learned so much since writing this, and I hope you do, too.

Please note that I did not include every color combination ever, this was just mostly a general idea tutorial. Take what you learn and apply it to your own art. I know this is under traditional, but it is used for every type of art.

The greatest way to learn color is to practice a lot, so get out there and practice <3~

Please also note that this mostly uses RGB model as opposed to CMYK, which is vastly different. If you're into digital art, look up a CYMK model of colors!

I find that gouache is the best paint to use to learn color theory, so grab some and test it out for yourself.

As promised

Here is my very first watercolour tutorial that you've requested me.

and something I would like to say before you start

Make sure you have some tissue papers while you're working, This will helped you control the water flow, cleaning your brushes,etc.

and don't use only one water container, let's find 2-3 of them

one is for washing your brushes and one for mixed with paints.

If you use only 1 water container, the water will become muddy and give you some horrible dirty effects, ruin your precious work for all time.

And use the best quality brush you can afford.

Textures in Ink and Watercolor

I promised to make this a long time ago. I had done the experiments, taking photos and scans, but became busy before arranging the tutorial.

I dunno if you've ever made a tutorial, but they take bloody forever. I spent all day on this crazy thing.

A lot of this feels really obvious and self-explanatory to me, and it may to you, too, but I know that to some people this is all very new so I kept it pretty simple.

I may, at a later date, add on the bubble texture and maybe a blotting kind of texture. Right now, I am calling it finished XO

I don't remember if I offered these textures as a resource yet, but I meant to. If not, I'll arrange a packet shortly.

Please forgive any kookoo mistakes. By the end I was like this --> @_@ and not sound of mind.

So as many people asked for it, you got it n_n. I hope this will help a little~ features:

I hope you like it, is my first tutorial don't be rude

Tips:

1. Never try to draw if you are not inspired or have a clear idea of what you are going to do. You will end doing crap.
2. Never, EVER rub the paper with your finger with colored pencil dust to shade, it doesn't look good.
3. Is always good to put some paper sheets under the one you are going to draw, it makes the coloring smoothly.
4. The secret of coloring smooth is simple: keep always the tip of the pencil sharp.
5. You don't need expensive colored pencils to do a nice work, 48 normal Faber Castell colored pencil's box works more than great.
6. Painting after a warm bath and burn incense relax the body and helps doing a nice job.
7. To do the lineart you can use the black pen you also use in school! Lol
8. Put some of your favourite music!
9. You don't have to finish the drawing the same day you started it, if you are tired by then, continue it later.
10. Practice!!!

Watercolor eye study, step by step

NOTE:

Originally, these pictures were taken only as a part of my documentation and were not suppose to be published, but when eye study won a DD, I've uploaded them on request for people to roughly see how I've worked. If my intention was to make tutorial, I would have taken far better pictures.

Materials used:

~ small watercolor paper block (A5 size) (tip: if you don't work on block and use only paper, stretch it, otherwise it will curl. More watercolor paper information: [link]

~ brushes: brush no.10 (used at start to place lightest layer of watercolor), brush no. 4 (used for most of the painting), brush no. 2/0 (used for details, it's actually even thinner than gel pen stroke, so you can use white ink, white acrylics or gouache for details instead of a pen)

~ watercolors (I use liquid watercolor Ecoline) [link]

~ white gel pen for final details

Any further questions I will gladly answer, please let me know if this tutorial needs corrections or is not comprehensive enough.

Please note that this might not be the most perfect or proper way of how to approach watercolor painting, it is merely an explanation how I worked.

Practical Traditional Paint Color Mixing Tutorial

I made this with my watercolors, but it can be used as a guide for acrylic paints and oil paints.

I had a very hard time with watercolors for a very long time. When I started reading websites and books on some color mixing techniques, it started to click. This is my small contribution to the community that will hopefully be of some value.

I learned to paint simply by looking. If your wondering what happens in my head on each of the panels. Nothing ! I'm listening to my music. I hear this a lot from one of my favorite artists who say "When you paint, let go everything you know about painting". It took me a while to fully understand what they meant.

I really didn't feel like covering my process with useless information to make this a proper tutorial. It's not what goes on inside my head. I simply paint what I see, not what I know.

Guidelines, ideal proportions and premade compositions that they teach us in our art school they become more a distraction for an artist. If you can let that go maybe this tutorial might not be so useless after all

Watercolour Texture Techniques

Here's some interesting texures you can make using watercolour paints. from top to bottom:

Alcohol - Drip some alcohol on the painted area and the paint will separate from the area. the dryer the paint is, I've found, the darker and crisper the edges of the seperated area of white will be.

Salt - Sprinkling Salt on the paint created a sandy texture. the longer you leave the salt there as it dries, the more the paint will spread but this works best the more semi dry the area is.

Blotting/Lifting - As an area dries, you can used water in your brush to blot areas back to white by making the paint spread away or you can use a dry brush to absorb or lift the paint from the area.

Stencils/erasing - While an area is semi dry, you can use paper or plastic shaped to remove the paint in a shape. I like using tape when i do this, shiny side down and sticky side up, this way you can touch it with the other end of your paintbrush to pick it up instead of trying to peal it away with your nails.

Sandpaper - This is hard to pull off in my opinion but is you use good, thich watercolour paper so you dont get holes and wait for the paint to be nearly dry like on the right rather than the left, you get a scratchy effect.

Wax - Use candles or wax crayons to make marks and shapes but drawing with the candle or crayon then adding the paint. Like on the left. You can go back after the paint dries and wax out more areas to keep that colour and then paint again like on the left to create layers.

Acrylic painting walkthrough

Just a simple walkthrough, I added parts that I saved. I do really paint the same way traditionally as I do digitally. xD theres not much diffrence actually.Only traditonally i have to make the colors myself, and water out the paint like if I were using opacity pressure in photoshop haha. Im used to painting on one layer anyway so it doesnt matter if I dont have layers traditionally xD

I use cheap acrylics which you buy in huge tubes, saves money xD. I dont like the small ones they stink and die fast. I think i used 3 brushes on this piece, one big, one medium and one small for details. big one being flat, and two being round.

Ignore typos if they are there xD

Abbreviated Tips from people who have used it:
On the Icing
~yumesenpai : Don't use Glace Royal/Royal Icing because you can't put the pin holes in it and it's hard to work with. It might work if you left it a day to set.
On the Colours
~icantthinkofaname-09 : Even better than baker's chocolate is Wilton melting chocolates. They're little chocolate discs that you can heat up in the microwave, so you don't need to use boiling water. They taste good and they make a really even consistency. [link] They also make all sorts of bright colored 'chocolates' (these ones taste like vanilla), so you don't even have to stick to chocolatey colors if you don't want to.
~Absolutley-Delish : White chocolate with food dye makes better colors is what I've found to work better. It's hard to make it just right.But this does work really well for batter like in white chocolate rainbow brownies or cake.
~YellowDaw : I have one more tip: if you don't have the "colored chocolate" you can also add food coloring to white chocolate to make different colors. I think it might depend on the food coloring. I once colored white chocolate with Wilton's color paste and it turned out fine. I think with chocolate you should use either paste or powder colors -liquid colors might make the chocolate grainy because they contain water.
~Zanreo : Don't melt more chocolate than you need. You don't actually need that much chocolate(especially if you have a small picture) and it's better to melt more if you need more, than melting more than you need - that's just a waste of good chocolate.

ink: something that's waterproof, or it'll bleed like hell even after drying

My first watercolor tutorial discussed quality of materials, but if you don't wanna read it, then just read this: PAPER QUALITY IS FOR REALSIES. You soak and stretch computer printer paper and it won't be happy with you at all. XD High quality watercolor paper is made more with cotton than with usual paper fiber. Cotton stretches and contracts when wet! Use lesser paper and suffer lesser results!

I was asked many times how I did the hairs in the ear and in the area between eye and ear - so I will try to answer it here...

First of all I only used masking fluid for the eye, whiskers, eyelashes and the really white hair in the inner ear. I covered them up in a really early stage and didn´t touch them till the end.

All the other tiny hair are done with MANY MANY really TINY brush strokes and MANY MANY layers. In the fourth picture you can see that I lightly colored the area underneath... and after that I added all the small strokes in a semi-transparent layers.

IMPORTANT: Let your painting get completely dry between the layers!

The part between ear and eye and the ear itself were the most timeconsuming parts of this painting.

watercolor basic techniques

This wasn't meant to be a tutorial (but it became one), hence the drawing is not great and her head doesn't look attached. I get questions often so I hope it is somewhat helpful. I doodled something because I was having problems with my paper and wanted to test out a new pad. Of course there's more techniques I didn't cover (but I have a book on that coming out in March )

1. Skin Colors used - burnt sienna, magenta, burnt umber, purple, rose dore

2. Dry on Dry - This means letting the first layer of color dry before adding more and results in crisp lines. This technique is good for details. If you do this your colors will not mix.

3. Wet on Wet - Adding more color while the first layer is still wet. Makes in soft edges but too much water can cause "blooms". This is good for backgrounds or your early layers of paint or if you want your colors to mix.

4. Lifting Out - Using wet brush or clean water over an area that is already painted with a darker color. This works best if your first layer is still wet and probably varies by how absorbant your paper is.

5. Hard Edges - This is what what painting dry on dry will generally look like.

6. Blended Edges -Edges of color blended with clean water.

7. Bloom -Too much water makes it dry like this if you are not careful while trying to paint a completely smooth area.

8. Glazing - using one color over another dry color instead of mixing first.

9. Used white paint for highlights on one side of her face and some of the hair. This is more of a preference since leaving the paper white in small areas can be difficult.

Painting Tutorial

Alrighty then!

This “tutorial” of sorts has been a long time in the making. It actually only took me a week and ½ to complete once I kicked myself in the arse and forced myself to finish it. The picture on the canvas was sketched out almost three years ago, and has been sitting on my stand-up easel ever since. When I came back from Guatemala I swore that it would be one of those many things I was going to complete. It was originally requested by as a way to give a brief illustration, and a few instructions on the rules and tips of basic painting.

Now, I am certainly not the greatest painter. In fact, I feel that I am as talent-less in the medium as they come, but I do try. I know I'm not really much of realistic painter— My paintings are more like, illusions of paintings... or something. I also don’t have the patience nor the talent for tiny, perfect details that others have. Oy. 'Kay, shutting up.

To begin this tut, I want to say that I know that there are several different kinds of paint out there. Some folks like the gushey, squishy oil paints that get into and onto everything… it takes all kinds of chemicals to clean them up… and most of the time you have to make sure they’re being used in a well ventilated area. Oil paints also take a millennium to dry… which to be blunt, frustrates the hell out of me. SO! I don’t use oil paints. Yuck. Some folks like to use the watercolors… Now those are some people with a lot of patience and a LOT of talent. I’m too much of a “control Nazi” to get the hang of watercolors. Everytime I’ve tried watercolor I ended up with a canvas full of mud. SO! Other than an occasional watercolor pencilon a drawing, I don’t use watercolors either. Tempera paints? No… absolutely not! Again Chako shall be blunt. Temperas suck. Let’s just say that those are the kinds of paints they use in a kindergarten classroom for a reason. Unless you’re purchasing paints for a 5yr old, do not waste your time even looking at tempera paints. Gouache paints are kinda nice. Gouache are like a cross between watercolors and acrylics. They behave like watercolors, but dry uber fast like acrylics… but I personally find them to be too “chalky” in texture and appearance when they dry. I have a set leftover from one of my college classes, but I hardly use them at all… in fact… hmmm… I wonder where they are…. Anywho, SO! You guessed it, this illustration will be focusing on the use of acrylics. Why? Because I like acrylics…

Um… I’ll probably be doing more talking than anything else. My apologies if I get too boring. It’s kinda big/long so I’m switching on the “download” option for a change. Anything else? No, I don’t think so.

bubbles texture tutorial

Made for

You will need:

- watercolor paper (I used 200g/m2, cold pressed, acid free);
- a bottle of bubbles;
- watercolor or drawing inks (I used both);
- container;
- a straw;
- you will also need some scrap paper or newspaper to cover things in the working area. The whole thing may turn out to be the dirtiest thing you ever made. (:

Directions:

First, pour some bubbles into a container, and add few drops of ink and watercolor. It's important not to put too much color (It can prevent bubbles from blowing). So, drop by drop you get the right color. _{Note: you may not need watercolor, but I wasn't satisfied with ink alone. (:}

Second, put the paper on newspapers or scrap paper in order to protect bubbles from messing around.. Dip the straw into the liquid you've prepared, place it above the paper.. and.. blow... BOMB the paper with colored bubbles and see the result.
_{Note: If you have hard time making bubbles, here are some tips. Shake or tap the straw before exhaling to let out excessive liquid. Don’t exhale to hard, do it softly. Blow one bubble at once. Practise! Be careful, inky bubbles can fly on your clothes and leave spots.}

Last one, let the paper dry completely. _{Note: it's desirable, no iron, no fan.}

Extra: experiment with different colors, size of bubbles, splashes, strength of blowing. Pop bubbles intentionally and have fun. get inspired by excellent photos [link] [link] [link] [link] [link] [link]

Guestion about color wash:
"If you put watercolor under running water wouldn't the rest of the colors wash away?"
A:
Nope, the paper absorbs color so it won't become "like new". It depends on how dry the paint is though wet paint will fade away more than one that has dried(dried watercolors won't even budge sometimes). You should try it out to see how it works! It's hard to explain without a camera so I could do before and after shots. It also depens on what kind of paper you use and how thickly you applied the paint.

Additional tips:
-scrunched paper/plastic wrap on wet colors=cool texture!

-logically there's also DRY BRUSH ON WET PAPER. The end result is similar to wet-to-wet, but the colors won't spread as far.

-if you blow air on wet colors you can make some interesting splatters.

-using rock salt makes bigger texture!

PAINT WITH ARC TUTORIAL

Why hello there, I didn't see you sneak up behind me while I was painting. What a suprise! I see that you are interested in my painting, and would like to also paint something similar!

Well you should probably go to school for it. I'm self-taught, which is probbaly not a bad thing, but I'm sure that I have many bad habits that I've picked up.

Why, you're persistent, aren't you? Well I suppose I can let you in on some things I've learned. But I can't guarantee anything. Don't come crying to me if you've been told that you're DOING IT WRONG. Sheesh.

How do I do it, you ask? How do I PAINT A PORTRAIT USING ACRYLIC PAINTS?

ON RESEARCH:

Well, I begin with references shots of everything I need. Of my subject and whatever else is to be included. Clothing, background images, etc.
In this case I needed photos of Jay, of his fave train. I also picked up photos of people in overalls and train engineer outfits.

ON COLOUR-SCHEME:

I then decide what colours I think work best with the subject. Lately I've realized that limited colour palettes make for bolder, more defined compositions. The more colours you add in, the more distracted and ultimately forgettable the painting becomes.

I like to work with complimentary colours. I chose to work with Cerulean Blue, and Raw Sienna.
Raw sienna also makes a great orangey tone for skin. Cerulean blue looked the closest colour to train engineer's archetypal uniforms.

Yellow ochre is great for skin, it is a toned-down yellow. It mixes with cerulean blue to make an olive green I could use in shading. Plus I figured if I greyed it down, I could use it on the train engine in the background.
Vermillion red, like raw sienna contrasts well with the cerulean blue, and in this case would work for parts of his skin that were flushed (the nose, the cheeks, the lips, fingernails, and the ears)

I grabbed a titanium white - it's a reliable white, and adds opacity when you need it.

Finally, and I hesitated on this, I used my tube of payne's grey. I generally shy away from black. It can dull colours, or make them stand out too much from the rest of a painting. I tend to create "black" by mixing complimentary colours instead. It fits better with the palette, since one colour tends to dominate slightly, and so fits in with all the other instances of that colour on the canvas.

Payne's grey however, isn't like many blacks. It really isn't a true black. It's a dark semi-transparent blue-grey colour. Almost black, but not quite. As such it can turn yellow paint to dark green and red paint to dark plum. Mixed with white makes a beautiful blue-grey. It can really broaden the possible colour-combinations for your paintings.
My only beef with it is that it dries to a glossier finish, possibly because of its transparency. Most won't be worried about that factor though, especially if you're a fan of using additives or mediums.

SO in summary:
Titanium White
Payne's Grey
Cerulean Blue
Yellow Ochre
Raw Sienna
Vermillion
Try to keep your own palettes to a max of 6 or 7. Simpler is better.

ON PAINT-BRUSHES:

Your choice, really. I hate cleaning brushes, so I use 2 or 3 at most. Flat head paintbrushes. I also like synthetic that aren't too stiff or soft, and they don't leave hairs behind. They also don't create a textured brush stroke.

THE BEGINNING:

I work on a sketch or two, to become comfortable with the figure and composition. Then I draw it on the canvas.
Um drawing on the canvas can be an issue. I like drawing on canvases. It give me an idea of where things will be.

HOWEVER...

if you're using semi-transparent paints, especially yellows, and you want to have big sweeping pure yellow strokes all over the painting, DO NOT DRAW ON IT WITH PENCIL...

not only does the pencil show through, but the graphite will actually be picked up by the paint and the brush, and taint the pigment.

FINALLY, PAINTING:

Everyone has a way they like to start their painting off. Some people do it piece by piece. I borrow a little technique from oil painting. I begin with a very thin layer of paint on the canvas, something I'll either be using frequently in the painting, or I'll be contrasting with a lot. In this case, blue.

ON OUTLINING and PROPORTIONS:

My next step is important. The pencilling was just to decide where things would end up. Now with a paint brush I have to build the figure. Therefore, I need to make sure that every feature fits in place with every other feature. Like a jiggsaw puzzle. It's especially important with portraits. More errors can lead to a portrait looking nothing like the individual you were trying to represent. I attempt to fix that problem at this stage, so that I don't have to fix it later when I've already done 4 or 5 hours' worth of work.

I use my paintbrush or a pencil to measure heights, widths and angles. The distance between each feature on the face, the angles between features.

It helps to break things down into triangles. A great way is to mark it right on the canvas. I wasn't sure about the brow ridge and the distance between the eyes so I drew a line across the bridge of his nose.

You just gotta keep looking back and forth, error checking, error checking, error checking.

Edit: Another way to go about this step is to forgo outlining completely, and instead focusing on blocking in all the shadows. In my experience, this has worked best with lighting conditions where there are deeper shadows cast on the features, making the colour shapes immediately obvious.

When you're trying to figure out the face, it is also prudent to look at the "negative space" in the photo, rather than the model himself. I've overheard professional artists boasting this to be "the way" to accurately copy an image. It sounds strange at first, but give it some thought. The idea is to forget the object. As humans, we naturally have preconceptions of what known objects. When someone asks us to "draw a person" we have in our mind's eye what a person should look like, and can then create that image on paper. However, I think that this can interfere with our reproductions from life.
The idea of "looking at the negative space" is to ignore the "known object", and focus solely on what is shaping the negative space.

ON BLOCKING IN COLOUR:

Stare at the subject's face for a while, look for blocks of colour. A flush of pink in one area, a flush of yellow in another. Yellows I tend to find around the eyes, as well as oranges and burgundies. I also find yellows at the corners of mouths and on temples. Pinks I see on noses, chins, eye lids, ears, cheeks and the tops of foreheads. I keep layering and looking for more colours. There is a ton of mixing at this stage. Start of with middle tones.

Slowly I'll add more and more detail. Then I add darker details. Then highlights. I'll keep working in more middle tones to try to smooth things out a bit.

Halfway through I'll start working on the background. That way I won't screw up the foreground, and if I do spill paint over onto it, I can still fix it without being pissed off

addendum: it is raw sienna, not burnt sienna that I used in step 7

Anime watercolor tutorial

Manga style watercolor is a simpler way to start because you can usually do your base color and shadows with the same color (just vary the amount of water).

This was done on smooth/hot press 140 lbs watercolor paper over a drawing in waterproof ink. I use M Graham tube watercolors.

The important thing to remember is that with each step/layer I let the paint dry before adding more. Once you get the hang of that you can add in blending with water.

When I do the highlights with white watercolor it's usually pretty thick, with hardly any water added.

Acrylic Tree Tutorial

I am asked a lot, if I would do some painting tutorials, so I am going to try and come up with some ideas for paintings that you might like to use.

The above painting is done with acrylic paint on canvas, but would work well with oil paint too.

You need to work fairly quickly with acrylics, as they do dry fast

1. Spray the canvas with water to keep it damp and allow you a longer time to work with your paint.

2. Use a sponge, dishcloth, kitchen towel etc. to place random patterns of paint on your surface, imagining they are leaves on a tree. Use colours you like, in any combination, just make sure it is a thick consistency. Cheap quality paint is ideal for this.

3. While the paint is still wet, use a rubber scraper tool, end of a paintbrush or kitchen implement, to draw a tree shape in the paint. Don't worry too much about the shape, as long as it has a trunk and some branches, you will achieve a good effect.

4. You could leave the painting like this or you could paint a little dark paint on one side of each branch and the trunk, to add a little depth.

5. If there are parts of the painting that you are not happy with or you want to add a bit more texture, you can sponge a little more paint onto the tree, or use an old toothbrush to splash some smaller dots of colour on the top, as I have done.

6. Use the same technique to paint a row of smaller trees or even a forest.

7. If you are not happy with your first attempt, let it dry and paint over with a single colour and start again.

How to Oil Paint - Layering

The piece I use in this tutorial isn't even done yet, but I've been dying to get this up for the last 2 days. It's a pretty simple beginner tutorial on layering oil paints. There are many different styles of painting, this tutorial outlines the style I end up using the most.

I hope this is well received, I would love to make more tutorials. Maybe one day I'll even buy a nice HD camera and make some youtube video tutorials.

IJ 4 Painting Tutorial

Indiana Jones Painting Tutorial.

Early this year I was charged with a commission to design and produce a limited edition release poster for Indiana Jones 4. I commenced work well before the details of the movie had been released and like almost all the people working within the LucasFilm/Indy machine, I was not privy to all the plot details especially the characters and their relationships. Even the name of the movie at that stage was unknown and more importantly, the existence of the crystal skull was considered top secret.

I decided to keep my layout simple devoid of most characters -because I knew that the brilliant Drew Struzan, would be working them all into his two poster interpretations. At that stage the relationship between Indy and Mutt was also unconfirmed, but I was strongly of the opinion that they would turn out to be father and son, so I concentrated on their mentor and student relationship for the composition. In confidence, I DID know of the existence of the skull but knowing that it was especially secret, I opted to include it in a way that was more abstract rather than literal.

I wanted to create an uncluttered piece that paid homage to the simplicity of Richard Amsels original Raiders poster. The challenge was to source a good reference image of Harrison from LucasFilm where he didnt look TOO haggard the result was a hi-res but slightly soft shot of him that captured the heroic expression I was looking for..

Top three images:
After working through a number of rough concepts, I put down the final layout on sheet of acid free paper, working in pencil. I felt the composition would benefit from the inclusion of a Mayan style motif and the circular carvings worked well for the intimacy of my composition.

I prefer to work on MDF board because, not only is it a firm base, but I really like its inherent color especially when varnished. Using a piece roughly 34 x 25 inches in size I transferred the layout to the board using traditional pencil. The next step was to lay down a wash of general color that would assist me in determining the deeper tones and the underpainted variations.

I chose to use a very limited pallet of colors for this piece (see the list at the foot of this tutorial) and I use Acrylics by choice.

Second line images:
I dislike a clean surface to paint on and in an attempt to drop in a little texture, I liberally splashed the surface of the entire board with drops of watered down paint. NB. I tend to do this only AFTER I have laid out the underpaint because if you do it earlier its almost impossible to see the pencil line work through the spots.

Using a combination of colors from my limited pallet, I started working on Harrisons face, his chest and his shirt laying down the initial paint application as a wash. Working with progressively thicker paint, I also worked on his hat so that I could pull Harrisons face out of the composition.

Third line images:
I continued to lay down the paint in progressively thicker layers and I also started to work colored pencil lines into the painting - to enhance some areas of color and to define edges of some shapes. I use a combination of Prisma Color, Faber Castell and Derwent pencils for this. I briefly considered including highlights on his eyeballs (left hand image), but ultimately decided against doing so because in my mind it looked wrong. I felt that Ford's likeness was "off" so I reworked his face again and in order to balance the layout, I worked on the skull and the light areas around Mutts face. I also added flames around the side of Indys head.

Fourth line images:
I was really struggling with Fords likeness at this stage so I slightly altered his right hand cheek to get the light to fall properly. His nose, I made a little more lopsided and I reworked his eyes extensively. I changed the flames because the first attempt looked like I had stolen them from the side of a Pontiac Firebird. Shia le Bouffs face was coming together but I kept it smoother and less cluttered than the rugged treatment of Fords.

Finally, I enhanced the red and yellow at the bottom of the composition to lift the Soviet symbol and to bring weight to the bottom of the painting all the while, I continued to work over the entire surface with colored pencils to create the looseness and energy I prefer to employ on my work.

Bottom Line:
The finished painting was finally varnished and scanned and Photoshop was used to clean up the edges and to lay in the Logo and text.
