Lackadaisy Expressions

Boy, I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I started this. I've had requests for some sort of expressions tutorial dating back a while now, so I figured, "Sure! I can explain expression drawing...and I'll make it way better than all those tutorials out there that are nothing but charts of generic expressions. Yeah! Just give me a day or two to whip something up..."

Um. Sometime a lot more than two days later, I have this messy behemoth and the realization that I haven't a clue how to teach expression drawing. There's just so much material to cover, and so much of it is like intuitive language translation, I can't figure how to put it into tutorial form any more than I could draw a picture of how to speak Russian. I guess that's why expression tutorials are mostly just charts of what happy, sad, and confused look like.

Anyway, I found all I could really do was try to explain ways to teach yourself...and then add some pictures. Hopefully that makes for something at least marginally informative.

+Drawing hands and tips+

Drawing hands is arguable one of the hardest parts of the human anatomy to draw due to its complexity and wide range of movement.

Best way to learn is to reference, and theres no better reference than your own hands. Get a camera or a mirror and have a look at them from different angles. You need to understand the shape before you can start drawing them consistently.

Tips ( my way of drawing hands)

Fingers are generally the same length as the palm

The middle finger is the longest.(for most people). Individual finger lengths vary, though generally after the middle finger the ring finger is longer in males while the pointing finger is generally longer in females.

Best way to draw the hand is to divide it up into shapes, I have a few examples above on how I do this.

Some of these hands are quite realistic and anatomically correct but Ive designed them for anime use. The detail is just to show the shape. Its best to understand something and have a good amount of knowledge about it before simplifying and stylizing it.

Some advice to use this tutorial:

Use the above guide as a supplement to gesture drawing. Reading and memorizing all this won't help you as much as sketching from life; this guide simply provides the understanding that will make your sketching a learning experience rather than a random process. So, carry a sketchbook around and gesture-draw people around you, especially people in motion. This way you are forced to use fast gesture drawing and not go obsessive over the details, and that is how you can achieve a solid grounding in grasping form and movement before moving on to worrying about surface additions such as clothing and expression. Think of the human body as an assortment of volumes, not as lines put together. This will change your life, trust me.

25 Essential Expressions

This is a challenge and an exercise that I find incredibly helpful when hashing out a new character. It's good to have nearby when doing your panels and you're thinking, "Damn, what does So-and-so's nose do in this expression?" Or maybe your drawing isn't consistent and you want to keep a certain look? Catalogue them on this sheet first and keep it nearby for easy reference!

I'd be more than happy to see filled out sheets in other people's devs! Let me know if you do post it cause I'd like to see it!

EDIT: Fixed typo, took away 'surprised' and replaced it with 'tired', then added 'surprised' to 'shocked'. I want to thank the forum folk at girl-wonder.org for the suggested changes!

Hand Tutorial -Tips+Reference-

Notes: I suggest drawing all the hands here (just for practice)....and see if you guys improve or not ;;. I feel like I improved just by compiling all these drawings xD.

Oh, and on another note, never try to hide the hands when drawing a picture. After all, forcing yourself to draw them on a body is the best way to practice ^^.

Finally, never be afraid to use references. Use your own hands if you must (unless your hands are like mine...fat and chubby and generally unappealing), or take a picture of someone's hand. Imagination and memory can only take the technical side of drawing to a certain point until you have drawing enough to master it.

Sorry, it's a bit big. These hands were compiled in a week's time through observing people and drawing hands in life-drawing . The shading's really rough, but hopefully it shows a bit more structure and how to shade the hand

Also, I'm not a professional (yet xD;; ), so there still may be mistakes in my drawing. but I tried my best ^^.

I know there are a lot of hand tutorials out there, but since it's my favourite body part to draw, I though, "why not?". I personally can't get enough of looking at different tutorials on doing stuff, so....yah .

I've seen a lot of eye tuts on dA...at least, what seems like tutorials, but a lot of them are simply either step-by-step or just a bunch of different styles of eyes in different angles. None of them really explain how the eyes look the way it does, why the eyelids casts that shadow on the eyeballs, etc. At least, none that I've seen

I hope this gives you guys a more in-depth look to the human eye and the structure surrounding it. This actually took quite a long time, so i hope you guys like it . Rendering the eyes took a LOT longer than simply sketching them D;.

To celebrate my end-of-school, let me share with you guys something I've been holding out on since....some time last year. lol.

I did another hand tutorial because the people at Womanthology wanted me to expand on my first tutorial I had on dA.

I hope this helps some of you. Again, like I said before, just keep drawing and don't ever hide the hands intentionally just because you're having trouble drawing them! . References are a great thing to have too.

There isn't a whole lot to say about this tutorial: obviously, it's a guide to the variety of emotions the human face can express, with as many pointers as I could think of to help you understand how the different parts of the face (and body) are articulated in connection with specific feelings. It was a fun tut to make, requiring more intuition and observation than research.

Anime and Realism lips tips

My favorite part to draw , i love plump shiny lips regardless of gender.

If you like my style feel free to reference the mouths or colours ^^!

There really is no right or wrong style but there are a few guide lines when drawing lips. The upper lip generally juts out a little bit over the bottom lip and requires a highlight on the top part of the lip and the rest is shadowed and darker than the lower lip. The bottom lip needs a highlight on the center as this part stick out the most. The corners of the mouth also need a highlight on the bottom edge on the bottom lip. Lips come in many different shapes and colours. They also differ a bit between genders though men can still have plump full lips and women can still have thin lips. Though generally mens lips are thinner and longer while female lips of softer and fuller.

lips are also textured with tiny soft ridges instead of being completely smooth if your doing realism. This is because the lip stretches when the mouth is opened or when pulling certain expressions and needs a degree of elasticity.

HOLY FREAK THIS TOOK WAY TOO LONG. I thought I'd take a nice, relaxing break from my chaotic Anime Expo preparations and have a go at my first tutorial, but nooooooo...this thing is more stressful than an actual drawing.

But seeing that I'm a PS newbie, I'm pretty glad that I was able to at least compile all this together. I guess I picked up some bits of Photoshop knowledge over the year after all. _{Would be sad if I didn't.}

People have been asking me to do a tutorial for a long time now, and I apologize for taking next to forever to get around to it The thought of making a tutorial always intimidated me since I have like 234012938 WIP pictures to choose from. But I finally got it done

Compressing 15 painful hours of sweat, cursing, and flinging objects into a 670×7637 pixel tutorial is no easy task. I'm kind of sad that I had to cut like 30 pictures (about 8 steps) off from the walk through. The thing is flippin' ginormous as it is, so I couldn't make it even larger D: And excuse my random doodles. I went a little nuts on the commentary too -_-;;

This is a thank-you gift for all of my watchers and friends online, and hopefully it'll be of some use to those of you who are starting out with markers :>

"Where do you get those markers? How much are they?!"
You can get Copics at local art stores (if you're lucky), and definitely online. Aside from a Japanese bookstore I go to, Kinokuniya, I also order them from online at [link]. THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. They can cost from $4.50 to $6.50 each, so shop smart :>

"What paper do you use?"
Manga manuscript, A4 size; I prefer Copic and Manga University brand. You can find these online too.

"How did you learn to draw like this?"
Lots of trial and error and lots of practice.

I cannot seem to stress this enough, I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL, there is definitely room for improvement with my anatomy, but im just sharing a few tips on the way I myself draw.

This is the last one of these that Im making >.< (*off to make a proper tutorial*)

Theres a mini tutorial on the top right, its a bit vague but remember easiest way is to divide what you want to draw into shapes.

I drew a few more complex angles, just to show how the body changes and what the muscles do.

Drawing hands? apparently its the hardest thing to draw, and im gonna have to agree >.
Once again, hope this was of some use.

Edit 01.2013: - This tutorial is a bit old by now and my understanding of perspective has developed quite a bit over the years. After giving this a re-read, most of information here is still sound and makes sense. However, I'd like to point out in particular that the section labelled as "Objects with Unique Vanishing Points" is a bit off. I don't think the concept is wrong, but I do think it's both written and presented wrong. Still, what's talked about in this section is something I never do in my own work, because once you've mastered 1, 2, and 3 point perspective, you should be able to draw objects that conform to different vanishing points completely on intuition alone.

A : There are several places selling Copic markers. You may check out you local art stores. Or as *SheCow recommendation, go browsing on Ebay. Ebay has more choices and probably sometimes has a very surprised deal! Check it out!

NEWS :: As mentions, "you can get copics from dickblick.com at a discount whereas buying them else where. (discount is at most 40% of the actual cost of copics)

Q : Copic markers are still expensive, Any brand do you recommend with a lower price?

A : Even though Copic markers are the best one for me, I admit that the price is still high. For some of you who want to use other brands, I recommend Neopiko from DELETER. These markers work pretty well and easy to blend like Copic markers (not 100% but yeah, still good enough to use!). And of course they come out with good price. But just keep in mind that Neopiko might hard to find on stores compare with Copic. So if you're interested, check 'em online. Yo!

For Prisma and Tristars markers...I've never used them so I can't tell about how good or tips...sorry about that TAT

More anime eyes and tips

I've done an eye tip sheet already but there's still a few more things i need to cover.

Making to eyes look like they match or are inline on the face is one of the most difficult things to draw besides hands. The only way to do this is to practice and become consistent but i have a few tips to that will hopefully help.

I always draw both eyes at the same time. ( as seen in the above pictures) this helps with consistency and gets the sizes similar. They eye further away is has less width and looks more compressed than the closer eye. Also remember at that angle you can sometimes see the curve of the eye and/or the eyelashes.

Best way to tell if you eyes are in proportion is to flip the image, you will be able to tell right away what is out of place if you do this. If your drawing on paper, turn the page around and hold it up to a light, this creates the same effect as flipping the image. This can also be used to tell what else in the picture is/or inst in proportion.

It's pretty hard to fill the tutorial with everything when the size limit is 18000 px, it may sound big but for a tutorial like this, it is not that much space.

Srsly. If you don't read the text in the tutorial, you'll miss stuff.

Edit: If this doesnt help you then don't pin me down for it! I dont think im the best at drawing hands but this is tips meant for people who have a lot of trouble with hands and this is just showing them ways they can help improve! I really can NOT believe the bullshit I'm recieving for some of this! D| Just cause it doesnt help you it doesnt mean others aren't learning from this.

Art Tips - The Foot

The best way to understand feet is to read about and understand the anatomy of feet in artist anatomy books (such as Classic Human Anatomy by Valerie Winslow), and to draw feet from life and/or from photographs. Do not expect yourself to know how to draw anything without first studying about it (If you think you know without studying, your brain is lying to you). If you have a stylized kind of art, it's best to know how something looks before you stylize it. This way your stylizations will look well-informed and attractive.

EXTRA TIP: People's pinky toes will do different things. If you wear tight shoes all the time, you may find your pinky toe is lying on it's side, is suspended from the ground, or is even pushed up over another toe. If you draw your own feet for study or reference, remember to keep in mind that if you incorporate this kind of toe into your drawings, people might think it is a mistake. Put the pinky toe down next to the fourth toe instead. Sometimes reality has mistakes you must overlook and "illustrate" your way around for the sake of executing a clear message.

EXTRA EXTRA TIP: Some of us have feet with unique qualities. If you draw feet that are unique, make sure your message of "uniqueness" is executed clearly. Don't forget to research and draw other types of feet if you want to expand your skill of drawing well-informed feet.

COPIC marker tutorial

Well here it is, my Copic tutorial for all of you who'd been asking for one over the years~!

Actually, this is over a year old (which explains why I don't like the picture anymore =______=;;;; but that's besides the point)...
This has been done for a Hungarian tutorial book project which fell through in the end so I've decided to put it together and share it with the community here to at least have some use for it if I went through the trouble of making it in the first place. orz Making a tutorial about traditional tools is messy, I'm never doing this again. @A@;;;;

Clothes tips

In a way clothes are the same as hair, there is no exact way to draw it. Just takes a lot of practice.

First things first, apply gravity, the clothes will always be hanging downwards unless theyre in a vacuum, moving or there is wind.

If you want the clothes tight, they should hug the contours of the body. The clothes will stretch on the thicker parts and have less wrinkles, on the parts that taper down, the clothes will start to bunch up and cling.

Different fabrics will behave differently some are more stiff, some are softer, and some are elastic.

For loose clothes, try to pinpoint the part that stick out the most, the clothes will drape from there, e.g. top of the shoulders, chest, arms.

When adding layers of clothes keep in mind the thickness of each garment, since they will build up with each one added.

Some good ways to understand how fabrics behave is to draw clothes out of a magazine or draw your bed cover. Once you have a general understanding its easy to apply.

1. Always keep your pencil sharp.
2. Find some paper to place your hand on when coloring, This can prevent your hand from smudging the color on your artwork.

1. I used Faber Castel. Colleen. Staedtler student colored pencil.

2. I used Light Brown [wax based] for drawing original lineart.

3 Copy paper and Printer paper are the same.

4. If you don't have white gel pen, You can use white postercolor or gouache instead.

Male Anatomy Patterns

Alright, the one a few have been waiting for. The patterns for the male are less complicated than the female patterns. Go figure . There is also quite a bit more explanation than before.

There is a section of major differences between male and female parts (other than the obvious) that cause distinction between genders.

I hope this tutorial helps.

Update: Wow...a DD after....6 years of posting work! Awesome! It couldn't have happened to a better piece of work. I hope it enriches the skills of any and all who use them.

A few tips on drawing Anime noses and how to do the shadow. ( in my style)

Noses can be difficult to shade if your not familiar with the shape. The shadow will be different according the the type of nose you are drawing. The noses i have drawn have a bridge that extents up all the way to between the eyes, and the shadow is done accordingly.

If there is less of a bridge there will be less of a shadow on the upper part of the nose.

The nostrils aren't always shadowed, especially if there is more than one light source or the light is coming directly from the side of the nose.

The shape is pretty straight forward, but the problems come when trying to draw it from different angles, once again i suggest a mirror or to look at some reference pictures, even if there from real life since its easy to convert itto manga

Drawing faces and drawing faces at an angle by popular demand

This is my manga/anime style of drawing and obviously styles and proportions will differ from person to person. but if you find these tips helpful feel free to apply them to your own style.

drawing faces at an angle can be difficult, but there are a few tricks to make it easier.

Make a grid on you initial sketch like shown above, divide it up half way for the eyes, half way between the rest is the nose and half way between that and the rest of the chin lies the mouth, of course all faces aren't the same and you can change the bottom two a bit, but make sure the eyes are always half way.

Doing this isn't just good for proportion it also shows you where the eyes nose and mouth will go when you change the angle. Remember that they are not straight lines, they curve with the shape of the face.

Foreshortening is also very important when drawing the face leaning forward, backwards etc. Whats furthest away will appear more compact and closer together/smaller while things closer will be bigger and further apart.

From the profile the eyes generally start where the mouth ends and the eyes are where the bridge of the nose connect with the forehead. The ears are in line with the nose and eyes and the neck joins the jaw a little bit back from the eyes.

Ok, this is a compilation on some notes I have taken over the past 5 years or so. This is a tiny snippit of that information. I have reams and reams of information to go through and organize. I want to publish a book on my ideas.

no one has ever publish an anatomy book based primarily on women. Sure there have been "how to draw Comic Females" and "how to draw Anime Females" But never a "How to draw female anatomy" book.

So tell me if you think these patterns are useful. Let me know if the help you draw females better.

Im not sure whether I touched on realism or not.

The eye lid has thickness, this means that the eyelashes dont start directly on the eye, a common mistake.

The eyelids are molded over the globe of the eye, and will follow it as it moves.

They eye lashes point outwards and down slightly then curve upward, they dont point directly up.

There is often a shine where the eye lid meets the eyeball.

If you want to make a monster eye, best to reference, or get inspiration from nature, reptile, fish or squid eyes usually do the trick.

Make sure to practice drawing eyes consistently since they can define a character.

The title is suppose to say 'Cell shading anime hair and tips' but it was too long T.T!

For this one, you will need a general understanding of the layers, and layer features

Hair.. (This is how i do it)

Its really hard to explain how to draw it since there is not really any sort of step by step process >.<

You just need to place the hair around the head and make it fall in the right places. remember hair has different weights, thicknesses and acts different accordingly.

I will make another tip sheet with a bit more info on drawing the hair itself and drawing male hair as well but for now this will just cover colouring.

Colours! . You need to know how to pick them if you want a nice finish. Or at least how to edit them? Say for example if you pick a green for the base tone, make sure to change the colour slightly when you pick your darker tone, make it a bit more purple, and say for the highlight make it more yellow. This vary in tone will give the hair a bit more life and it will just simply look nicer and not so flat.

for the gradient effect, add a new layer over your hair and clip it on so the colour stays only on the hair itself, For PS its called a gradient mask. Brush on the desired colours, preferentially a darker for the bottom and lighter for the top. Set the layer to overlay and it should make a nice gradient effect. Remember if its to saturated bring down the layer opacity.

I always play a bit with contrast after Ive coloured my line art, it will just do that bit extra and make the image "pop".

Important note, when using the overlay or contrast features be very careful not to overdo it, since this is a easy way to ruin a nice picture >.
feel free to reference the colours but remember to experiment with picking your own ones too!

Color Theory Crash Course

This is a basic color tutorial. I'm sure a lot of you guys learned this in school, so it's basically a refresher course. Or it's more of a "put one foot into the door" sort of course. This is definitely no where near an end-all-be-all tutorial. I suggest everyone to look up multiple tutorials and draw from many places to learn. I encourage you to continue to investigate color theory, because we never really stop learning.

I've learned so much since writing this, and I hope you do, too.

Please note that I did not include every color combination ever, this was just mostly a general idea tutorial. Take what you learn and apply it to your own art. I know this is under traditional, but it is used for every type of art.

The greatest way to learn color is to practice a lot, so get out there and practice <3~

Please also note that this mostly uses RGB model as opposed to CMYK, which is vastly different. If you're into digital art, look up a CYMK model of colors!

I find that gouache is the best paint to use to learn color theory, so grab some and test it out for yourself.

Horse Tutorial

Just a quick tutorial I threw together while chatting with Starhorse and Wadhifitook. They cheered me up.
I draw these little guys incessently on my notebook margins. Horses leap over biology notes and gallop past art history dates. I really should start drawing something harder, like humans.
Form concept is my current eureka. I'm trying to use it more because form concept = stronger foundation drawings.
I also draw a lot of my horses with the Peruvian Paso or Andalusian body and mane, because I own a Peruvian. But I tried to keep my drawings more stock or grade body type, cause those are the kind you see most of the time.

I am in such a rut it's not funny. Plus I'm working on two comissions, so those will occupy my time for a bit. I hope this helps folks. Draw 100 of these things and post 'em. You'll get better. And I'll give you something.

Drawing Anime Hair

A little more in depth on the shading and how to draw the hair itself >.<

Tips. (this is how i do it)

Hair falls over the shape of the head and generally goes in the same direction, so a helpful tip is to draw the hair coming from a point. (check bottom pictures ) The point can depend on were the parting of the hair is, but it usually goes at the top of the head. You can use a separate one for the fringe.

Remember to apply gravity (for straight or more realistic hair). The hair will drape over the top of the head and where it comes off the back, it will hang.

Different hair types will act differently, In anime/manga alot of the hair seems to defy gravity, so to keep it looking like hair remember to still make it follow the contours of the head.

For the shading just use common sense, shade where the light hits the hair, and shadow where the hair lies against skin or underneath bangs, behind the neck ...etc. Best to look at real hair since it will show the shape of the head best >.<

Male and female hair are exactly the same, they just generally have different hair styles.

Giving a character the expression you want can be a tad difficult at times T.T

Few tips?

Expressions are made up from a combination of the mouth eyes, and brows. Downward pointing brown and angry eyes combined with a smile will make some one look evil/sinister, while the same combination except with an open mouth can show a sort of angered surprise? It all comes down to mixing the right combos to make the right expressions.

Eyes
The eyes are an incredibly expressive feature. This varies from how wide open the eye is ( surprise or anger), to a narrowed eye ( anger ). The skin under the eye lifts up and makes the bottom of the eye appear almost flat when smiling. Remember different muscles will effect the eye according to what emotion you want to portray, I suggest getting a mirror and having a look at your own eye.

Brow
This can be used to easily express surprise, confusion, happiness and sadness. Upward sloping = sadness, surprise downward sloping = anger, surprise, concentration. Horizontal lifted eyebrows = indifference, unimpressed. one sloped up and one sloped down = puzzlement, annoyance.

Mouth
The mouth is pretty straight forward when showing expression, though a smiling mouth will have different meaning when combined with other different facial expressions.

Just experiment and look and see how other people do draw expressions, also looking at real life helps.

_{A redux of the previous study on Serratus Anterior. It was hastily drawn up that time and I have been wanting to do a neater version since then.

I have Burne Hogarth's book on Dynamic Anatomy for years. Only recently I started reading in details. To correctly place the Serratus Anterior, imagine a line starting at the pit of the neck, 45 degree down, past the nipple and there you have it.

The maximum number of Serratus slots a human can have is six but that 6th slot is only visible when the arms are raised. In drawing, it makes sense to stick to 5 slots or less. In reality, this particular muscle group are hard to build and most guys have to work really hard (and must be very lean) to have all 5 of their Serratus Anterior show up.

I won't say these drawings are 100% correct but I also won't say these are ridiculously out of this world. Therefore, I welcome any feedbacks or standards which I could have never heard of. Got myself a new anatomy book this Friday. Super inspired again. XD

Drawing the front is alright but I need to understand more on the back anatomy. There's always this subtle differences between the sources references online and books and I don't really know which is more accurate.

In case it's hard to tell, the skulls are there as visual indicators. Drew those in to add value to this otherwise boring drawing. The base of the chest should be a head long from the base of the chin. Distance between the base of the chest to the naval should be another one head long.

It will make sense if the legs were included. I like drawing things big to allow more details. Each of these were drawn on A4 paper which had already took up the whole paper space. That leaves the legs for another day. Haha~

This isn't ALL of the steps (I think I left out at least 1/3 of it), but these are probably the most useful stuff to put in a tutorial.

Part 2 of Perspective & Composition. Part 2 is PURELY about the aspects and theories of composition in art and how YOU can make better work with them. Due to this fact, this tutorial has a LOT of writing in it, and a lot of reading, and less "step-by-step" technical examples. You can think of this as more of a free lecture on the subject.

Anime Head Angles Perspective

I noticed in most of the head tutorials the face up and face down angles are not very clear, or not, how to say...."pushed" enough, those are one of the most difficult angles to draw (at least for me), so I thought I could try to share, eventhough it's surely not perfect!
