After poking around with whatever tutorials happened to be on deviantART, pixel art tutorials happen to strangely offer dithering as the only solution to a particular problem of color banding. Color banding is an effect when you can see bands of color when something is supposed to look like a gradient.

Of course, most tutorials will offer dithering as a method to create the intended gradient. There are at least seven different ways to approach the same problem. Dithering is only one solution but it is often poorly controlled and in some cases, the dithered colors do not blend via being too high contrast, and it creates an inappropriate texture for the given subject.

The 'use a different medium of art' example was painted in GIMP in a minute. Achieving a similar look with pixel takes a lot longer to do.

Mini Pixel Walkthrough ~ read description

_{So I had alot of people asking how I do all these mini pixels that have now taken over my gallery I didn't really know what to reply without having to write loads So I decided to do a tutorial/walkthrough thingy I'll be explaining the different steps and helpful tips for you guys in bullet point paragraphs below. So here goes...

Each different screenshot is shown at 100% and 500% (I usually have the canvas zoomed at 1500% when making a mini pixel )

1. To start we need a small canvas (the canvas size I use for mini pixels is 37x26pixels) In my opinion, anything bigger than 50x50pixels isn't exactly mini

2. I always start with drawing the front leg that is closest to you, in this case the left. You don't have to start with that of course! But I do because I know from my own experience that for this certain sized canvas and creature (dragon), the very top of the shoulder should be about half way up the canvas. (This only refers to the standing pose, if I wanted a crouching or jumping pose this reference point wouldn't work!) It's all about experimenting people!
I ALWAYS create a base of the character/creature to start with. I pick a colour that is not on the character! This makes it much easier to see and colour afterwards

3. Now that I have my starting point, I can go ahead and draw the body. I use a darker shade of whatever colour I used for the leg. Remember that you are working on a small canvas and with no lines so don't go crazy with the pose. If you can, try and make as little parts overlap as possible! As you can see, I've drawn a simple, smooth body shape, which is best for mini pixels

4. The body is done and the pose is pretty much decided by now, we just gotta finish the base! I use the same colour for the legs closer to you and the head (for easy colouring after). The eye should only be one pixel big.

5. The legs further away from you should be done in a much darker shade. In this pose the back right leg is mostly hidden by the tail, but that doesn't mean were allowed to forget it!!

6. I use random colours for features such as hair and spikes. They stand out more that way and make colouring easier. I also added the wing. (the base is now done)

7. Get all of the colours you will be using and put them in a transparent area on the canvas, a new layer will do if there's no space. When I colour the base, I always start with the smaller areas first. The 7th screenshot shows how I started with the mane, tail and other small parts before the main colour. When I jump right into colour the main pelt, it seems more tedious and annoying (maybe that's just me ^^').

8. Because of the light colour of this character, I filled the transparent area a different colour so I could see her easier. Cream isn't the easiest colour to see on white and grey You should put the shading where the lines would be, if not then your mini pixel will look flat and we don't want that now do we?! You can also put a couple darker pixels where two shaded areas meet (in this example, under the cheek, the elbow and thigh) Continue to shade the large areas.

9. Now for the legs futher away from you (I really need a shorter name for that xD). What I do for them is just a flat colour with a much darker shade (so basically you don't shade them). Because this is a dragon, there is also the other wing to do. Do the same as you did for the legs for the wing. These darker areas are not necessarily darker because they are in shadow, it's just my style for mini pixels, you don't have to do the same.

Render Speed - DS4.6, PPro2012/2014

Posted this on the RDNA Poser 10/Pro 2014 forum, but thought I'd put it here, too.

I should start by saying that render speed is the primary reason I use Poser over any other 3D app. It really makes me feel like I get the most "bang for my buck" -- I can optimize my render quality with very quick render speeds. I know I can get better realism with external render engines like Lux, and I know Vue also produces higher quality results. I also love the look of Genesis and the DS interface. However, when push comes to shove, I usually can't rip myself away from Poser, simply because I can achieve very good results with very short render times.

I did my level best to construct two scenes of equal quality in Poser Pro 2012 and DS2.6. I then rendered the scenes in DS, Pro2012 and Pro2014 and compared the times. It demonstrates what I was saying above.

Disclaimer: The DS and Poser scenes are NOT identical. I did everything I could to get them as close as possible. The camera angles are a smidge off, and lighting had to be completely re-done from one app to another. I was also unable -- though I tried VERY HARD -- to get the new DS 2.6 SSS to work with any level of comparable quality to Poser's. I tweaked and researched and worked for hours, but I kept getting results that varied from flat, dull skin with ridiculously shiny lips to BIZARRE render artifacts -- one of the renders had Vicky looking like she had fish scales. It was not a good look for her. This could very well be operator error, but after half a day, I just gave up. Anyway, I got MUCH better results with the HSS, which I've always liked. And in any event, render times with DS's SSS were a smidge longer than with the HSS, but they were fairly close.

I tried to achieve "optimized render economy" (lol) with each image. I used the lowest quality settings that didn't compromise the image. So, here's what I came up with:

Image Resolution: 1000 x 1000

DAZ Studio 4.6 (x64) with Native 3Delight
· V4, base DS mats with HSS shader
· UberHair shader applied to hair
· Uberenvironment (same image as HDRI used in Poser) with 80% occlusion, 128 occlusion samples
· 1 spot (specular and diffuse together)
Render Settings:
· X and Y pixel samples = 10
· 1 Raytrace bounce
· Shading = 0.08
TIME: 7:38

Poser Pro 2012 (x64)
· V4 with SSS
· All Poser mats, including procedural nodes on hair
· 1 HDRI/AO Light
· 1 Specular only Spot
· 1 Diffuse only Spot
Render Settings:
· Raytracing, shadows, SSS, smooth polys, and displacement on
· 1 Raytrace bounce
· 100% Irradiance Caching
· Pixel Samples = 10
· Min Shading Rate = 0.8
TIME: 3:22

Poser Pro 2014 (x64)
Same specs as Pro 2012 -- same file.
TIME: 2:02

Worth noting that you can see subtle joint bulges on Vicky in Pro2014, which is an issue being discussed over at RDNA. I did not use weight-mapped V4 (which does not bulge) in 2014, simply because I didn't use her in 2012 and didn't feel like recreating the scene again. You get the idea.

Anyway, there are my 2 cents. I ♥ 2014 already.

This is just MY way of coloring them , I'm a total noob at coloring manga cause I barley just started , so this is all I know , and I learned this all on my own too btw. So I'm sure there's better tutorials out there for this. Sorry if the tutorial doesn't make sense , and if it looks crappy . This in my first tutorial I ever made so I tried my best ok v_v
