This is part of a major update on my traditional portfolio. I'm not sure if I will keep those here, but meh, you can have a look now, and we'll see later.

Sketching naked people. Non-artistic guys might think those artists are nuts, but sketching nude models is really important for an artist (unless your kindof art, has nothing to do with it ofcourse). When you sketch nude models, you have to think of proportion, the slightests error is visible, which makes it a very great subject to learn from. A human body is also very familiar, yet so complex and rich of different shapes. Sketching models also brings you the art of understanding motion. How do things move. I know it sounds a bit silly, but it's when you are really working on bonestructure and muscle attachements and stuff, that you start to discover how we actually work. And believe me, there is a bit of us in everything, so if you understand how we work, you get a more solid grip on what surrounds us. I love sketching nude models, because there is a certain tention between the artist and the model. An artists scans the model completely and he can see through the model, fantasizing about the bone structure beneath it. Trying to understand what makes the model work. And then the artists tries to mimic his/hers thoughts on paper. The model feels the artists eyes I think. It's something weird and vulnerable. When you have time off and you don't know what to do. Grab your sketchbook, a few pencils and start walking. I was walking in the corridor and I saw this lifesized replica of Aphrodite. This is drawn in an hour, I kept sketching untill they yelled my name for the fifth time I think. Well, it's great for practice, less for popularity. Muahaha.

This drawing is also made of a statue in Brugges, Belgium. I had a lot of fun drawing this. I got to use the 'magic pen' of the teacher. Turned out to be 'just a filling tip'. I learned so much from this guy. I remember that it was really cold that day. But I didn't care, because I had my vest on.

They are actually a LOT of fun when you make them. Just get yourself a 500 sheets stack of paper, collect all kinds of jars and pots and stuff, and just go for it. I did those in 2003. They are far from perfect, but it's a 5 minutes sketch. I have 25.000 others I think. lol.

Anyhow, if you want to have tips on perspective, you might consider getting this Gnomon Workshop DVD serie by Scott Robertson.
