Rinzler: How I Made the Costume

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THE SUIT

Neoprene rubber - [link]
a wetsuit undersuit (dive suit) - [link] (this links to the shoes I used, but in the suggestions below they have some wetsuits)
Barge's cement
LEDs of your color choice - [link] and [link]
an exacto knife
black latex paint

A WARNING BEFORE GOING ON

When dealing with Barge's cement, please wear a mask and gloves. This glue is very potent and can cause damage to your body if inhaled too much. It will also tear skin if the glue gets on your body and you try to peel it off. If glue does get on your skin, just wait it out. Eventually it will all come off.

PHOTO 1
- Using a pattern my fiancee made from scratch we cut out the chest piece with an exacto-knife and started the base layer. The material used for the armor is Neoprene rubber, which is similar to craft foam, but much thicker and stronger.

- Repeated the same steps for the leg.

- In these three photos you can see some of the progress we made with the base layer. We repeated the same steps in photo one, continuing the leg, and starting on the back. The weird section on my leg is where we had a small mess up. This will be covered later, so if you make a mistake don't worry. Just fix it as best you can for the moment.

- Will be explained later. For now, I'm explaining the suit itself.

- We completed base layer of the armor. We actually started the second layer (a little bit) on the leg and back.

PHOTO 6
- Once the base layer is completed, you can start on the layout for the LED lights. We placed the LEDs where we wanted them to sit on my chest and ran the wires towards my back. The batteries will be kept in the disc hub, where Rinzler's Idenity discs sit. These LEDs were ordered from Oznium. They are the lay-flat, orange LEDs. They come pre-wired so there's not a lot of hard soldering.

- Second layer for the chest area is complete. Be sure to use thick Neoprene so the wires from the LEDs will not show underneath. This is where you will want to take it slow and make sure you're getting all of the details correct. You can cover up mistakes and get it as perfect as you can muster. You can even take shortcuts. For example, since the zipper was in the front for my wetsuit, we decided to have a small slice down the middle so it would be easy for me to get out in case of overheating. However, we made it as inconspicuous as possible and it ended up looking really good.

- More layering on the body, and the back has been started. Inside the disc hub is where we have the ends of the LED wires. This is where the batteries will sit and be well hidden.

- Since the chest was completed, we started painting the Neoprene with black latex paint. You can purchase this at Lowes or Home Depot. We chose this paint because it doesn't flake or chip from movement. It flexes with you and holds everything together nicely.

PHOTO 10
- The hand lights. Now, we ended up uninstalling these because no matter how little I moved, the wiring wore out extremely fast. That and the wires constantly pressing against my fingers when I bent them and was quite painful. I would recommend getting reflective tape for this area. We just used the lights without the wiring. So it was still orange, it just didn't light up. Same went for the butt-lights. If we had made them light up I wouldn't have been able to sit and, believe me, I needed to sit. So here, and for the bum area, I would recommend placing reflective tape on the base layer of the armor. Then, when you lay down the second layer, cut a small section out of the first two fingers so the orange will show underneath. For the butt lights, cut out circles in the shape desired. You can use two layers, or just place the tape on the second layer. Feel free to follow the pattern in the photo for the fingers.

PHOTO 11
- Detail shot of the "T" section, which is a separate piece from the chest. The LED's are gently placed onto the Neoprene inside of small square holes that were cut out with an exacto knife. They were then glued in with a back piece of Neoprene to ensure they didn't move. The wires for these lights also travel into the disc hub on my back. The "T" section itself is covering the top of the zipper, and it is connected at each side of the suit so they line up together nicely. This was secured with strong velcro.

NOW FOR THE HELMET

This photo above is just to show the difference in size from the ordered helmet to the redesigned one.

This helmet we ordered was from a Prop Maker in Italy named Art Funk. You can order an incomplete kit, or a finished helmet, from him on his Facebook page.

Honestly, I would recommend purchasing the kit. That way, if it doesn't fit you, you can re-size it as much as you need to. When we picked up the kit from the post office we received a resin cast of the helmet, as well as a plastic visor. When I tried it on we realized that it was way too large for my small frame. J had to cut out the resin visor, heat shape the resin base, cut, and sand it until it fit me. He had to take the entire base in about 50% before it started to look right. One all of that was sorted, he then had to size down the plastic visor.

After installing the plastic visor to the resin base, all that was left to do was to fill in the mistakes and sand it to give it a smooth finish. Then comes the easy part: painting the visor, resin base, and installing the lights. For the visor we used VHT Nightshade window tint, and for the resin base we used a matte black spray paint. Use any method of your choosing for the lights.

Warmup - Sonic The Hedgehog Reimagined

This morning's Warmup - Sonic The Hedgehog Reimagined
Sort of an initial attempt at 'what if I was the sonic the hedgehog creator and designing the character'

The idea behind this first off attempt at his redesign was aerodynamics. The head is designed to cut through the wind, the suit and gloves cut through the wind with as little drag as possible, and the tail acts like a bit of a stabilizer, the knee pads cut through the windw for the shoes that are also pointed at top to slice through the wind, and they seem a little 'mech' style too maybe they enhance it all. the backpack has a glowing yellow button, maybe thats his powerpack for his ring stashing and when he gets enough it kicks on his supersonic.

well heres a character I've had for a while but I never felt like drawing him but I ran a poll on my Facebook like page a while back and it seems he was the most popular enemy of the Bounty Hunters I'm not sure if it's because of his some what violent ways a story or due to his looks but hey whatever so I gave him this new redesign and popped him up on all these art site that I'm on heres the shortened version of his back story

Howler the wolf has a sword which is made out of a strange but powerful darkness that Howler can recall into his body. He was hired by a professor named Ownaga to do many tasks to help him and to keep back the many protesters who didn't agree with his work. But soon when Ownaga didn't have enough money in his funding to pay Howler for his services, Howler refused to help any longer even though Ownaga's research could help the world. So Ownaga used an old project called the day chamber to capture Howler's sword to where Howler couldn't call it back. Ownaga then cloned the sword hoping with his own sword he could protect himself but something wasn't right when the cloner stopped it wasn't a sword but a large cloud of dark energy (much like the kind Howler shoots out of his blade) it took the form of the only one who could wield the sword Howler....but in all white and black. Negative Howler was born. Negative has the same powers as Howler's sword but being made of darkness can morph his body into any shape even disguise himself as different people but the one flaw is that his eyes always stay the same Negative's one goal is to use his power to adsorb the energy from others to absorb Howler's power over the darkness to double his own. when Nega is defeated he using his shadow like claw to tear a hole to a void in between world known as the negative zone. only Nega can get in there so Howler cannot chase him down.

well thats basically it I know a lot of people are going to bitch at me for Nega being over powered a bit but over powered enemies make for interesting ones, since he's not the main hero is my series I don't see a problem with him being powerful

Influence Map

Oh yes, it is bandwagon time! But in all honesty this was really fun to do. You can see what influences some of my madness.

1. Jan Duursema, I had the pleasure of meeting her at CV and I have always been a fan of her work. I just want to be this woman. If you don't know her work then look it up and you'll understand what I mean.

2. None other than the awesome ~Shiramune. His work is so lovely and not to mention the character designs just make me want to go off an redesign all my characters looks and clothes every time I go through his gallery.

3. Kenneth Rocafort is an artist who I stumbled upon by chance. I was on Facebook looking at stuff on the Her Universe page and saw this drawing of Ahsoka and I found myself totally inspired by this art so I hunted the artist down and was blown away with his stuff.

4. Angelina Jolie, my mother loves her and I try my best not to show signs of loving her because I don't want to intrude on her fandom. But hello, this woman kicks some serious butt! She is a wonderful person and seriously good looking. In the beginning I based Sakiko off of her.

5. I want Hugh Jackman. Now. Team Hugh. He is the model for all my manly, sexy, male characters.

6. Now if I were to make a live action film with my characters Kate Beckinsale would play Sakiko. I just love her bad ass sexy chick acting skills and well, she is very pretty.

7. You all should know =croaky or, if you dont, now you do! She kicks ass and never fails to make me want to draw.

8. Pin up! I like sexy girls and I often find myself looking up pin up pictures when I'm bored. I don't really know what I like more... modern pin up or the classic 50s pin up.

9. The Force Unleashed, oh my lord, after playing that game I have a serious need to draw bad ass battle scenes with lovely Felucia scenery. Plus Galen is very good looking.

10. Hyung-Tae Kim. My Sensei lent me the art book and I fell in love with Kim's art. I ended up searching for the art book and man, is that one hard thing to find! I eventually did find one though. The style is just so unique and exaggerated. Not your typical anime paintings. (now you know where I get the ears from!)

11. Hellsing! I live for this show. Ever since all this Twilight nonsense came about I've been dying for some serious hard core blood and gore vampire stuff. I remember seeing this show when I was 12 and my life pretty much was scarred ever since. I've been a fan of blood ever since. OVA > Anime

12. Star Wars, Star Wars, Star Wars. Especially the original trilogy and The Empire Strikes back poster always inspires me.

13. Galen Marek's clothes. Need I say more?

14. *pu-sama caught my attention many, many years ago and I remember wanted to be her. Her style back when I first started watching her influenced me and her new style today continues to do the same!

15. Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford. Hello bad ass and sexy.

16. J. Scott Campbell, for what ever reason I look at his work and it just makes me want to draw. It's got sexy girls and a unique style.

Right, I pondered giving the Hammer an arm attachment that would let it hit like a boxer. Now I'm thinking of redesigning its arms. Maybe hands that turn into maces.

I started working on the Rustang here. It's a Panzer-type. The first draft is courtesy of the Blader, a robot from the CosmicCommander game I play on Facebook. Under it is a claw design I got from an Invid mecha. I ended up with the second version, but as seen later, I didn't settle on it.

I yoinked this outline from the awesome ~JackxTessa who posted something like this for her own characters over on facebook.

Anyway, this is my newest OC, Kelly! He came about when I was trying to redesign Syd, and at first he was Syd, but then he kind of took over his own self.

Because Roger is crazy and really likes to be energetic and crazy rude while on stage, he thought it'd be a good idea to bring someone else into the band to take over the guitar duties he'd been shirking. SO ENTER KING.

His middle name is actually my dad's middle name, which is cool I guess. I always thought the name was really weird. I mean, really: Donathon. What.

Anyway, Kelly's first name comes from my dad's brother (MY UNCLE) who happens to be a nurse! He's a pretty interesting person. Got a very meandering, careful way about him. He's also really tired all the time but likes being a nurse so.

I'm debating with making Kelly and Barrett be related, but I'm iffy about that. Then that'd mean I'd have to concoct some sort of back story with them and that's a lot of work.

UhhhhHHhHhhHHhhh oh man I forgot to say that Kelly has like a small, preserved octopus in a vial on a necklace. Because he loves those things. Octopus' and Jellyfish are his bff's.

In short, I like Kelly. I look forward to playing with him in my mind. Teehee.
