It's a small picture about 4x5" so the pic you see is about actual size.

I do a lot of portraits with not much eye detail, so thought it would be useful to learn a bit more about the eye structure, which will help future work.

inspired by lyrics in the song "Holland 1945" by Neutral Milk Hotel. the song itself (although beautiful) is a bit cryptic, but it's essentially about Anne Frank and her family. there's been speculation that the lyrics "piano filled with flames" allude to the possibility that Anne might've been reincarnated as Pepito Arriola (a child prodigy pianist). i don't belive in reincarnation so much... i just kinda like the idea that we all continue on somehow and that in the end the evil in this world doesn't have the last say. ]]>

The first guitar slash at the start makes the middle white line going up and right.

The white lines radiating from the top left and bottom right corners make up the chorus, *top left* "The scars remind us" *bottom right* "The past is real" the chorus follows that cadence all the way through, five syllables, four syllables,

The line running up right through the central circle makes the rest of the verses, sometimes hitting every level of the structure including the white space through the circle, sometimes only hitting some.

The actual colors, the guitars specifically, are yellows, oranges and reds, whereas the two lines crossing in the middle are inexplicably a sort of light blue, and when I tried that in a rough sketch I realized it just looked weird, but I loved the structure of the picture, so I decided to nix the colors and focus on that.

This song is very texture-heavy, layered, and the shapes of the different spaces important, so this was a chance to work on those techniques. The hatching/cross-hatching ensures the texture is fully-developed, (which is why I love that kind of shading) so this was mostly a chance to work on my 3-D skills.

Please, do me a solid and leave a comment with your thoughts on the perspective, feedback would be much appreciated! ]]>

it took a while to post this since my camera broke..

i use art paper that comes in a roll, its thin an smooth and doesnt exceed 36". i found it at staples department store, its good because you can make drawings any size you want you cut it out..
i use a mechanical pencil (Ticonderoga 5.0)
eraser stick
art gum eraser
kneadible eraser
woodless graphite pencils HB and 9B
and blending stumps ]]>

Eddy Howard Smith - 1979 Pencil Drawing (18"X24")
