Eel Walker

This is a personal project I've been working on for awhile now. I finally took it to the foundry today to get molded and cast in bronze. It's sculpted in oil base clay and stands around 18" tall.
Both the figure and the eel were sculpted separately.
I had to cut and paste the eel together with the figure in photo shop and erase the armature supports in this photo to show how the finish will look.

A update on them...

This is a sculpt of Celestia and Discord from "My Little Pony's - Friendship is Magic" This was sculpted for Sculpted using her boyfriends drawing as a reference.

They are a good sized sculpt - Discord didn't fit in the oven at first and had to be baked without his antler and horn. Discord stands at 13 1/2 inches and Celestia at 12 inches.

Here is the finished sculpture I just got back fresh from the foundry. I'm very excited about this piece. 'Art Works foundry' in Berkeley CA. did a fantastic job molding, casting and patina-ing my sculpture. I want to thank, Mold maker Gabe, Wax caster Felisa, metal worker Steen, and Patina artist Aiya and the others that worked with me on this piece.

Wow, less than 24 hours after posting this and the response is overwhelming. Thank you all for your comments.

The dimensions of this piece are 19" tall, 28" long and 5" wide.
I will be producing this as a limited edition bronze sculpture only, no resin copies. Edition size of 20.
This is a complicated piece to produce so they aren't cheap.

'Swan'. Standing Nude Contortionist Sculpture.

I have titled this one 'Swan', in reference to the 'grace of a swan', one of several contortionist studies I have been working on as of late.

Mood and Melodrama.

They are the building blocks from which I create 'Art'.

Her hair represents the fluidness of water and wind, the intricate little flowers represent thought and emotion. Each flower represents a single thought; a single emotion, and as one thought becomes another, they bloom and multiply, together forming a garden.

The Garden Of Persephone.

A garden of Light in a dark place. A collection of emotions, like an oasis. Most of the work I do is at night, it is when my inspiration is at its strongest. It in effect yields a very dramatic undertone.

The column, old and crumbling from neglect, symbolizes the passage of time.
The overgrown moss on the base, that creeps up the column, has become a visual aesthetic I have used throughout my art to convey the feeling of nature reclaiming.

In the end nature reclaims everything.

It creates a very aesthetic, forlorn quality, inwhich I find 'beauty'.

With the Mystique sculpture now shipping to Sideshow customers everywhere, I thought I'd shed a little light on the sculptural process of a piece like this.

Working very close with art directors from Sideshow, as well as with the designer, Adam Hughes, the statuette progresses from a wire armature through clay and eventually to wax, being refined and tweaked along the way. The initial clayup, or rough, was sculpted in Chavant NSP Medium plasticene, and was then cast in Toxic Mom's Wax for final cleanup and detailing. As you can see from the photos, I'm not above utilizing a mixed media approach to accomplish different effects, or just to make my life a little easier. The final wax master was comprised of about a dozen different pieces, not including the skull base.

After Sideshow receives a wax master from me, they'll cast it in resin, provide a paintmaster copy, and it all gets shipped to Asia for mass production.

The gun was fabricated by Oliver Brig and the paintmaster was accomplished by Mike Najera.

[Edit] Since the question has come up, I'll explain a little about the process for making the panels of her dress.

For each of Mystique's panels, I glued a thin strip of cloth to armature wire, pressed the ends of the wire into Mystique's abdomen and shaped the wire to match the design. I brushed the fabric down with a fabric stiffener and shaped the wet fabric with a sculpting tool. After the fabric was hardened, I was able to cover the surfaces with clay, allowing me to cast the panels up in wax for further refining.

Bronze Octopus

This is the finished bronze octopus, modeled off the blue ring
octopus, my friend (Isaac Krauss) and I worked on. He came up with the concept and sculpted the body of the octopus and I came in to help with the wax work and welding. The glass tabletop sits level on top of the legs. Welding the legs to hold the glass tabletop was a very rewarding and challenging process. I've certainly improved my TIG welding skills a lot because of my work on this octopus. An interesting thing about this sculpture is that the eyes are hand blown glass. In all the table weighs about 500 lbs which means we have put about $5,000 into building it. We estimate that we put around 1500 man hours into this project. I usually keep my gallery strictly my illustrations...However, I work as a developer for a company that makes collectibles sculptures and I am really enjoying the way my Tigerlilly is coming along. Her necklace and staff have real gold and jade. The concept was kinda inspired by my friend who is Native American who wanted something that screamed GIRL POWER since women are seen as docile in alot of tribes.

Hey, Howdy, Hello! Here is another commission piece for the one and only Go check him out, this character is created by HOON and colored by I sculpted it. Its the 2nd of many characters that I'm going to be sculpting for him! There is a small story behind this monk, and where it was inspired! Hoon has more info on him. This sculpture was done a while ago, just now got the privilege of sharing it with all you folks! Definitely more to come!

This is a sculpt I did for Virgin Comics. Is one of their comic book characters called "Ramayan" the worrior prince. It'll be a full color hand painted collectable figurine. This is based on the cover art from one of their comics called Rama painted by Alex Ross.
It's about 11 1/2" tall.

Ill try and and answer all the questions you asked here, and everyone who left a comment, thankyou you’ve said a lot of really lovely stuff.

If you would like to see it, its going to be at the Mall Galleries in London from 2nd – 6th june, as I entered it into the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year competition/exhibition (theyre offering 10k for the top prize so wish me luck!) And then if it doesn’t sell im sending it down to ‘The Sculpture Park’ in Churt in Surrey.

I used loads and loads of photos, plus I was totally eagle obsessed as a child, and drew them all the time.
I found some eagle wing and tail plans in a book so I made tham first. Then I started at the beak and built through the face chest and legs…only it wasn’t quite that smoothe, I had to remake alot of it as sometimes I only get my head around how a shape should be once ive done it all wrong first.

The eyes are one of those stainless steel spheres that they use in garden water features that I chopped up and welded onto it

Its got a wingspan of 235cm which is about as big as eagles come, though everyone who sees it says that it looks a bit larger than than life.

My estimate on the time is about1000-1100 hours.

I used Stainless rods that are 2 – 4mm diameter, so they bend by hand quite easily, and all the joins are done with a mig welder which fuses the wires together.

im trying to sell it for £12,500 which covers the time and the materials etc

I like how it looks outdoors, it hangs under a tree in the garden at the moment. I guess someone could put it indoors if they’ve got a big house..

This was a commission. Okapis are the weirdest looking critters... kind of a mix between a zebra, a giraffe, and a hyena(the face for some reason, maybe it was just the picture I was looking at? ). I love the markings though, and the big ears!

Last WE I was at the 1:12 miniature fair in Germany.
And woot! First time I actually make some (even though ridiculous) benefits. I also finally understood what people wanted and had wonderful time chatting with others, especially Neil (who does amazing bronze sculptures) and Pia (who makes flowers).

De retour d'Allemagne et de la foire 1:12.
Et ouaaa j'ai fait des bénéfices (certes ridicules) pour la première fois.
Et aussi j'ai enfin compris ce que les acheteurs voulaient ha!
Sinon j'ai bien papoté et tout particulièrement avec Neil (qui fait des sculptures en bronze) et Pia (qui a fait les bambous que j'ai achetés).

I thought for a couple of days about the subject, and then got it: what could be better than a weird kind of salamander that spends its entire life cycle in water (instad of getting out of it as an adult), to represent the concept of "Water life"?

In facts, Axolotls keep for all their lives the external gills, that are typical of tadpoles.
There are also dark grey and brown axolotls, but the albino version in the most common among the "pets" of this species.

Real axolotls have slightly smaller limbs, and are a bit more slender (not much, they still look pretty goofy), but having to make it with polymer clay made me go for a "baby-proportioned" one.

It took a lot of work to make this one, I think something around 20 hours or so, but it was lots of fun... I used to play with polymer clay a good number of years ago, and had forgotten how nice it can be... and also, I didn't know that it can also be very hard and nasty, if you let it into a closet for something like 10 years (no jokes, I have some packets that say "1995"... ).

Anyway... the core is made with wire and tin foil, whereas all the body, gills and eyes included, are made of polymer clay (Fimo and Cernit, also mixed together).
I added powder makeup to give some soft shading to the body, and glossy varnish to make the eyes more alive.

In 1630 the Bubonic Plague crept through Venice on the backs of flea carrying rats. To combat this the clergy and doctors of the time wore thick black frock coats treated to be water resistant. They wore leather masks in the shape of crows heads stuffed with dried flowers and herbs. They carried walking sticks to use as batons for moving patients and family members without touching them. They believed that the evil smells were the cause of the illness, and did all they could to ward it away. This is my interpretation of a Plague Doctor, though I was powerfully inspired by the amazing art of Asya Yordanova aka My Name Is Swan, in style and abstraction. This ones for you!
