For my foundation course, trying to get kids to read more.
The idea was to give a representation of who you could be when reading. I didn't want to do a soppy princess for a young girl, I decided to make a warrior, with armour reminiscent of books. I would have made a series of them, showing a child and their book version. This was pretty fun.
I wanted to make a sort of art nouveau version though I think it looks a little as if the girl's being stabbed through the head.

My latest, as best as I can photograph it. And it's pretty close to the original. Note that I put the Author, Ayn Rand, on one of the books. To do that with every book would be photo-realism. I'm not interested in that. The artist must pick and choose. Note too, that I signed it on one of the books.

A little rough, intentionally so. I must have blended different colors for the background over some 15 layers of pastel. Decided to use all my techniques, so much of it is now cross-hatching. The lightest color in the background is done with just a deft touch of running a single color over the underpainting. This is close to cross hatching, but closer to just lightly touching that area with the pastel.

This is a Christmas present for my Mother. She wanted a piece to hang in her classroom (she is a special education teacher in Oregon). I think of it as my "ode to knowledge and learning" since my mother is so passionate for learning herself.

This is a comission I finished this weekend for a friend to give as a gift. I was given a list of the recipient's favorite books and then I picked characters from some of them and put them all together. It was a bit challenging because the only books I'd read from the list were the Harry Potter books.

Characters/books starting with the blonde in the top left corner and going clockwise:

I just found this doodle that I drew of Alyeena tucked into a stack of papers and decided to scan and colour her. Pencil drawing, digitally coloured. It's not the best, but it was originally just a couple inches high.

The title is just from one time my husband did a little imitation of Alyeena saying 'I like books.' and it just stuck with me as her catch phrase. XD

Books - new bookmark

This is my new bookmark for the MMC. It's something completely different and I have to say that this is the first time I used PC coloration for the background (the books are oldschool handmade *_*) The bookmarks will have little decorations and I hope people will like them!

This is my interpretation or vision of this description from The Night Circus! A few days ago I was privileged enough to have Erin Morgenstern post my drawing of Tante Padva to her fb page! I know, how amazing. So While on her page I saw that she had posted this quote with a challenge to all the fan artists to try and depict that scene... So here it is!

I am disappointed with the quality the scanner has produced, It is way lighter here than in life, the sea is way blacker and the sky a deep purple. But hey ho.

So the sail is made of pages from books and the boat itself too, the boat shape was just made up from my head and so whether it is correct in any way i am not sure (never drawn a boat before). I added the red scarves to the sales for all you Reveurs, Made the back of the boat one large book on its back, the middle an open book, and the front a stack of books i love. Books on their sides made up the sides of the boat, so the spines are facing upwards all around, if that makes sense. I was contemplating writing on the books but decided against it... and added the compass style clock as a reminder of herr Theissen and also instead of a moon.

Anyway after all that... Hope you like it!!!

Growing with Books...

One of my earliest memories was me looking over the wonderful text and pictures of the New Book of Knowledge... I was pretty voracious with reading books, and I guess I was lucky my mom worked as a book sales person when I was a kid, so we had tons of books at home, practically a library. I devoured every books available, and I guess they more or less contributed greatly to my present interests, way of thinking and imagination. I even secretly wished I would publish my own book, with my own drawings some time. We can very much say that the books we grew up with somehow formed what we are right now... now think of it, what books did we grow up with? Nothing beats the pleasure of leafing through the pages of a book that you love... especially books you grew up with... and willing to grow old with.
