This is one of those things I had had in mind for years, and I finally got round to do it. I wanted the initials to resemble the Book of Kells (which doesn‘t contain as many celtic knots as you‘d think), and it took me hours… and hours… and hours… and more hours… At least I‘ve finally kept my promise to do something else based on medieval book illumination.


Summer gave me most trouble with the colour scheme. I generally associate summer with greens and yellows, and I wanted to have some green for leaves and looking vibrant and alive anyway, but there‘s also the association with heat, fire and the colour red, so that had to come in somewhere, too. And then there‘s the association with the sun, with light, virtue, and life, and I wanted to have white in there. This is the result of trying to squeeze it all into the colour scheme.
I vaguely remember that his companion animal was initially an eagle which has all sorts of nice connotations, until I figured that a red kite would be even better, even though I know of no literary traditions of red kites, so this is supposed to be a red kite. And because my elves always need some sorts of pseudo-celtic/Irish stuff on them, there‘s a ringsword (yep, I changed the lineart because I forgot the ring, I‘m a dork). And there are rowan tree branches, because those are so nicely Irish.


Today‘s music suggestion: Eluveitie in general and especially Luxtos:

People who don't like Folk Metal could go for the Secret of Kells OST instead (I'm so original).

Patricia engaging in her favorite summer activity: sleeping well into the day. She and her mother are not true bears, just transhumans with some bear traits, but Paloma swears her daughter must have gotten a hibernation gene in there somewhere as the 19-year-old college student can easily spend 10 hours or more sprawled out on her bed snoozing in all sorts of positions.

Here, she spent the night out with some old high school chums. When she got home, she only got partially undressed, as we see here, before just collapsing onto her bed. She was eventually joined by Paloma's kitten T.K., who shares Patricia's love for sleeping in.

Ink and colored pencil, 2013. Without her glasses and her pigtails de-emphasized, Patricia sure does resemble her mother, doesn't she?

This is my vision of the streets of Canterlot- if it were to be built by French architect ponies. I think it's the perfect compliment to Canterlot; the street cafes, cobblestone, even the little gargoyles/ statues are in the show. I had a lot of room for interpretations for this piece thanks to the ambiguity in the visual stylings of the show. Though I do feel I abused the liberty a bit, seeing how the only things that make this recognizable as Canterlot are the towers, the cafe seen in the S2 finale and "Sweet and Elite", and Pony Joe's. Meh, whatever. I'm still happy
This is actually the first piece in a looong time of which I am truly satisfied with the outcome. I've had so much fun drawing this, it's silly I also found my .3 mechanical, which really helped a lot. You'd me surprised by how much of a difference of .2mm can make.. it's ridiculous!
Completion time~ 58 hours over 2 weeks. Crushed my old record!! It sure payed off in the end, I gotta say. I sure hope you like it as much as I do. ]]> So.... yeah.
