The stories have an incredible tendency to imply that women should not trust each other (queens, mothers, step-mothers, witches, and fairies...), should never have sex or else they would die (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rapunzel...), and should promise their entire identities to male figures to retain their social purity, often by way of marriage (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, The Frog Prince...).

For those of you who are under the impression that I'm unthinkingly 'celebrating' fairy tales by making pretty illustrations, you might be a little disappointed to find out that I'm not quite doing that. I love the stories. I grew up with them, memorized them, and studied them. Once you get to understand them, you come to recognize that they're pretty terrible, and that we are still too often bound to the standards they imposed in centuries past.

My sister wanted me to draw my niece as the Little Mermaid, but because the pic was from the waist up, the fishtail wouldn't show! So we chose none other than Sleeping Beauty. So, she's here with her pink gown, crown, and everything else, with Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather and some roses (inspired from "the gifts scene" from Disney's "Sleeping Beauty").

I'm really happy with this piece!!! I just loooooooooooooooooooove Princess Aurora...

I did this with pastels only. I started sometime in January (2006) and worked on it on some Saturdays in my human figure class.

It's Sleeping Beauty, obviously, because for some reason I felt like summing up a fairy tale in one picture.

This is mainly based on the Disney version of the story. The text is out of the film (I watched it loads as a youngster) and I modelled the evil fairy off the film as well (notice the weird hat thing).

I spent a lot of time on the evil fairy because I wanted her to look evil but beautiful. I don't think she looks evil enough, but I'm still happy with her.

The beast definitely resembles disney's. I love that movie, so that image is stuck in my head. Plus I stink at drawing anything animalishlike. So no creative beasts here.

The disney movie is one of my favorites. And the original story is also quite wonderful. And actually, the beast is quite the gentleman in the original, you know. Well, despite the fact that he sort of forced her to live in his castle. But he did let her go and visit her family, because she was lonely. And he was kind to her. *sobs* I JUST LOVE THIS STORY

Funny story. I was like, "WHY DOES THIS LOOK ...SO...familiar?!?!" while I was drawing it. THEN I REMEMBERED THIS! [link] ...and I was like, "wow...I'm such a goofball for not recognizing when I'm plagiarizing my own self of my own artwork....gosh "

My only regret with these is that the lines aren't QUITE as clean as they are in real life, because of my scanner. BUT! I think this turned out well, and I'm glad, because it's my favorite. So. THE END! It's been fun! Now maybe I can feel regain some feeling in the fingers of my right hand!

As far as I know the princess in the English version(Not Disney) of the tale did not have a name. But in the Norwegian version of the tale she is referred to as "Tornerose". Ruffly translated to Thorny Rose.

Soon it came that the King and Queen passed away, and Aurora had to become the new ruler.
In all this time, she had no idea about anything.
Finally, she had been awaken by a court member.

It was then when she realized she had wasted her whole life sleeping when she could have been doing so much more.

I know this is a bizarre take on it, but Sleeping Beauty is one of her favorite Disney movies and one of my favorite scenes in it is when Flora and Merryweather fight for the color of the dress and it ends up in an explosion of blue and pink. It's such a pretty looking mess that I thought on doing a make up inspired in it for Shannon.

I used a glittery bronze loose eyeshadow for the base and, to paint the two colors, I used pink and blue pressed eyeshadow with a touch of water. I was originally going to use my new transformation eyeliner from AVON but it doesn't work as well as it's supposed. I read some reviews online and everyone seems to have a similar outcome. So, a bit of water, a very fine brush and that's it! I added pink and turquoise glitter on top for a pixie dust effect and my favorite black mascara (The Falsies 'Black Drama' by Maybelline, in case you wanted to know xD).

It's a fun make up dedicated to an awesome, sweet and adorable person! Happy Birtday Shannon!
