I just recently read the excellent Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. (I'm currently reading through the second book, Behemoth.)
It's a pretty fun and quick read. It is also quite the excellent Steampunk series. An AU WWI with lots of intense action, machinery and bio-engineered, strange animals, along with awesome scientist and aeronaut ladies and dorky princes.

so im reading this series called te leviathan trilogy. finished the first 2 books in like 2 weeks, an i LOVE IT! sadly, the last book doesnt come out till september QAQ

anyways, this scene is what COULD have happened in the beginning of the secon book if Deryn (AKA dylan) had just kept talking! instead the comversation went SOMETHING like this:

Alek: i wish things were different, i dont want to leave the leviathan, it may seem stupid, but its almost as if im in love

Deryn: but what if things WERE different? i mean did you figure it out? what exactly are you saying?

Alek: i think im in love with the ship

Deryn: in love.... with the leviathan?

something along those lines

Volger approaches the cabin and opens the door soundlessly, as is his habit, and thus he has no one to blame but himself.

"Gott im Himmel," he swears, taking a fractional step backwards.

The boys come apart, eyes wide in shock and horror, and in the half second before the inevitable protests begin, Volger considers the situation and its ramifications.

It's a surprise, yes. Not an apocalypse, however. Goodness knows Alek won't be the first monarch to prefer the company of men, and he certainly won't be the last. This is unfortunate, but can be managed.

"It's not what you think," Alek says. He says this despite mussed hair, a half-untucked shirt, a flushed face, and one hand still on Dylan's arm. Dylan, whose own clothes are in disorder and whose blue eyes have gone almost black, his pupils are dilated so widely.

I blame that drabble for my mind going in the gutter I just HAD to draw it because pfft, poor Volger. I think it's my favorite piece of fanfic for this book so far. Go read it! She has 41 other drabbles up on ff.net and they're all fantastic!

I've been trying to do some more detailed fanarts of my favorite not-very-well-known steampunk-ish books (Leviathan, Boneshaker and their respective sequels) and in my rush to squeeze as much art out of my brain as possible during vacation, I chose this!
It's Deryn/Dylan and Tazza, who is just there as a prop but looks mighty fine if I do say so myself. I think I made Deryn look a little too guy-ish, but otherwise I'm pretty satisfied with this

I finally got to read Leviathan and it. was. awesome. I was a fan of Uglies but this one's in another category. Behemoth, here I come.

I wasn't going to draw things from this one because the illustrations in the book are so great. But.. then I did anyway. They looked different in my mind's eye, so.

Leviathan concerns the adventures of Prince Aleksander, on the run after his parents, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Princess Sophie Chotek, are murdered to advance the first world war. Only in Aleksander's world things play out a little differently. Each nation of Europe in this alternate timeline subscribes to either being a 'Clanker' or principally uses machines, or a 'Darwinist' who principally use genetically engineered animals for warfare and society. Aleksander is a Clanker and sets off into exile on board a Stormwalker mech.
Meanwhile Deryn Sharp has joined the British Airforce in the disguise of a boy. The living airship she travels in is called The Leviathan.
Both Clanker and Darwinist will meet by strange paths in the midst of a brewing war of mind blowing proportions between robots the size of mountains and beasts of war with cities on their backs.

Alright. Explanation.

I love Gundam UC. Which is weird, because I don't really care for mecha stuff...but there's just something about Gudman UC. Maybe it's the plot. Maybe it's the character development. Maybe it's the awesome 80's hair...I dunno. I just dig it.

And I also dig Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan trilogy. So of course I had to blend the two.

Okay, NOW I'll ramble. Watch out for spoilers.

So! If you have read all three Leviathan books, you are used to those momments when Deryn is oh!-she's-so-close-to-tell-Alek-she's-a-girl-but-never-really-does
And in a momment of impatience, I doodled this up. I thought it was better if Deryn shouted "ALEK I'M A GIRL!" instead of just whispering it like one of those cliche situations
I actually love how Scott Westerfeld worked that out. Alek finding out by himself. Sort of. Bovril helped.
And so I figured Bovril should help both Alek and Deryn in this comic. Only Alek was too oblivious to notice, even with the loris climbing all over him in a cute way. Again.

Anyway, enjoy

This is Deryn Sharp, a charecter from the book Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. She is serving under the British Air Force, comprised of genetically modified beasties, but since it's 1914, she must disguise herself as a boy in order to get in. She's a natural airman...but Europe is on the brink of World War I, and Deryn finds she may have bit of more than she can chew.
Please excuse the 19, the line through her eyes, and the various things writ about in the margins; I doodled this during class on my agenda. (Ha-ha, one of my friends likes horses and drew Princess Sophie Ferdinand's horse...)

Another one! I just finished Behemoth and I love it so much! D: I am fully obsessed now. I suppose that's good news since there'll be more fanart?

Anyway, this scene is from the first book, Leviathan and the original illustration is one of my most favorite (next to illust with Alek teaching Deryn how to fence) because it's the first one with them together XD

Now, this one isn't as good as the first fakie because I was in an obsessed trance... so Alek's hand is too small and so is Deryn's ear. FAH! Next time, it'll be better. Yes.... i plan on doing more.... D:

Soooo...been meaning to do a Leviathan comic for some time now...and this idea just struck me the other day. Came up to me and smacked me in the face, really. Mayhaps I shall continue... (don't know why I lapsed into Shaksperian accent...)

I love, love, love, the book Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld.
And I LOVE LOVE LOVE the illustrations by Keith Thompson.
They are gorgeous...

EPIC FAIL AT TRYING TO DRAW HIS STYLE!
But the thumbnails I did of this looked a lot more like his style than this turned out.... funny how things happen.

This is one of the scenes in the book that wasn't illustrated...
and yes, I know that someone had already did fan art of this scene... but... I did mine in pencil... and I did it it at a different angle... so there. lol

Okay, before you think this is Shonenai or something let me explain... The brown haired boy is Alek and the blond is Dylan/Deryn who... is actually a girl.

I liked this scene because It's when Deryn falls in love with Alek... she falls in love fast.... lol... even though Alek is a bit of a moron.

Issues:
Alek's far leg is too high, Deryn's arm looks awkward and her head seems to big. The perspective is a bit iffy.

Just some doodles that I came up with a while back.
Nothing special...it's just that there hasn't been a lot of Leviathan work lately. Wanted to contribute something,
even if it's rough, unfinished, crummy pencils.

I finally got to read Leviathan and it. was. awesome. I was a fan of Uglies but this one's in another category. Behemoth, here I come.

I wasn't going to draw things from this one because the illustrations in the book are so great. But.. then I did anyway. They looked different in my mind's eye, so.

Wildgraf Volger (Wildcount)

I've been just buried in Leviathan! That book is sooooooooo good. My favourite character is Wildcount Volger, he's such a bastard. XD He's a bastard with a heart of gold - the best kind!

I knew exactly what he'd look like but whilst drawing him, I had to improvise a bit so he ended up being in my style(?).
I like doing etch-y crosshatch-y shading on "realism" more then the smooth gradinet-y type, it takes more effort to get it right with strokes then it is with smudges. No, I didn't shade it in Photoshop to make it "Look like" it's from the book, I did that for funzies 'cause I didn't want to tone it.

Well Im trying something new, because when I started to do all those request and art-trade I was starting to get tired of drawing Alek and Deryn so I made some changes to make them fun again( please dont kill me!) I actually like the new version but its still missing some things to be like the way I want.

Change the eyes of Alek for asian ones and you get TOP from BIGBANG

As for the others I went freestyle...

And can you believe I transform our beloved Bovril! ( I will still draw him the other way when I feel like posting something stupid)

I went to Scott Westerfeld's book tour this evening, and thiry minutes before I left to head to the signing, I whipped up a little fanart to give him.
It's very rushed and the first time I've used markers in months, so it's a bit awkward. But he seemed like he liked it. I was very nervouse about giving it to him, I hope I wasn't too awkward. ;~;

I apologize for the poor quality photograph. Some of the metalic ink was still wet at the time, so I didn't get a chance to scan it.

Alek came out odd, Deryn looks alright though, dunno what happened.
