I worked on this my senior year of high school, which was... man, way too long ago. I've always loved mosaics, but have not really been very successful with them (glass hurts). Paper, however, is awesome. Hence this creation, which I call paper mosaic. Over five 20-cassette long books on tape and a month or more later, I had torn up pieces of art paper, sketched out my design, and glued each individual piece on to the canvas. I have a lot of good memories working on this project (The first time I "read" my favorite book, "Cloud Atlas"!)

It looks cooler in real life, but I think the picture is still pretty cool. Hmm... I can't really think of anything else to say about this. They're very fun, and I recommend anyone who wants something nice and destressful. It's fun, and you really can't go wrong if you stay abstract in design. Definitely give it a try. ^_^

Anyway, here're the specs:
Canvas size- 4x6 feet (slightly bowed, due to a cat-astrophe)
Materials: about ten different shades of art paper, canvas drop cloth, pine boards, and elmer's glue. Oh, and the charcoal I used to sketch out the design.

Anyway, enjoy! If you guys are interested, I can add this to my list of "to-do tutorials"
Scuba-diving had seemed like a fun enough idea, and she had a great time swimming with all the exotic and fish with her best friend Lani. When they happened upon a sea cave, Lani motioned for Nautilei to follow her and swam in.

Nautilie went after her, seeing her friend swim upwards towards a shimmering light. They surfaced in what looked to be a cave, illuminated by a slick glowing fungus coating the walls. With only the illumination provided by the photo luminescent slime, they quickly removed their scuba gear. Lani brushed her short hair from her eyes. Normally a dark brown, her hair was jet black in the lighting, framing her deep tan skin darkly. Lani smiled looking to her friend. Nautilie was still removing the last of her gear, her pale naked form hopping on one foot as she removed it. Lani stared openly at her unaware friend, appreciating how her long blue hair clung to her curves and ample bosom. Lani was admittedly jealous of her breasts, as perky c cup was not match for the double D's her friend sported. Nautilei could not see the blush spreading on Lani's face, and moved past her to marvel at their location. Wat had at first seemed a simple sea cave, upon closer look, was the ruins on a ancient temple. Towering columns covered in the discarded shells and snails, intricate mosaics half submerged under the pooling sea water. And at the rooms center lay a stone dais. Upon it sat a statue, its human face glared down at the girls contorted in a permanent howl of rage. Bulging arms held a massive harpoon held ready to be thrown. The lower half of the man was that of a massive fish.

Lani startled Nautilei, grabbing her by the shoulders "Now theres a man for you Nauti, Haha. Too bad hes more fish than man..."
Nautilei scowled at Lani "Very funny... you nearly jumped me out of my mind. And are you cold? I am freezing my butt off."
Lani grinned thinking of her butt "Com'on Nauti, lets look around a little bit more before we go, you wont freeze.."

Nautilie sighed, and followed Lani toward the statue. Lani busied herself inspecting various discarded seashells, while Nautilei walked up to the statue.
"What do we have here!?" Nautilei said with a smile, grabbing a shining object from a seaweed covered stone positioned in front of the statue.
With a firm grip she yanked the pearl free, overbalancing and tumbling to the ground, making a large splash. Lani rushed over concered for her friend.

"Nauti you okay?" she asked, helping her friend up.
"I'm fine, i just slipped.." she replied sheepishly. "Oh, but looky here what i found!" Nautilei raised the sparkling orb.
Lani reached out to inspect the impressively sized jewel, but as her hand touched the object, a strange sensation shot through her arm, and Nautilei's as well.
"Ouch! what the hell was that!?" Lani groaned.
Before Nautilei could respond there was a loud cracking screeching noise, and the entire room started shaking violently. Lani grabbed Nautilei and pulled her close, the tough girl was legitimately frightened at this point.
From behind them came a booming sound, the echoed painfully through the sea cave.

"WHO HAS DESECRATED MY TEMPLE, WHO DARES TO TRY AND STEAL MY SACRED STONE!" The girls looked in shock as the mouth of the statue moved as if it were alive. "TWO CHILDREN I SEE.... VERY WELL, I SHALL TEACH YOU A LESSON OF CONSEQUENCES FOOLISH ONES. I GIVE YOU A CHOICE, JOIN THE CREATURES OF THE SEA AS MY SUBJECTS, OR THIS ROOM SHALL BE YOUR TOMB!"

The walls of the cavern shook, and rocks fell from the ceiling. Nautilei yanked on Lani's arm "We have to get out of here! the whole place is falling apart!" Lani looked at nautilei with a vacant expression for a moment before returning to her senses "Y-yah lets get out of here!"
The girls ran for their scuba gear, but as they neared it a large section of wall collapsed in front of them, spraying them with rocks and seawater, and burying their gear.
Nautilei frantically started digging through the rocks, But Lani realized they had only moments to escape "Were gonna have to swim for it!" she yelled pulling Nautilei to the cave mouth.
With no other choice remaining, the girls dived into the water.
They swam for what seemed like ages, but the surface was still so far away. Nautilie felt her panic build as her lungs screamed for air. She cast a glance at her best friend one more time, before her vision darkened and she couldn't hold her breath a moment longer....

Nautilei woke up feeling heavy and stiff. She panicked for a moment, realizing she was still at the bottom of the ocean, but then she noticed she wasn't dying actually. Actually, she was breathing the water in like it was air. When a thick greyish purple tentacle slapped against her face she nearly creamed, and when she twirled to face her attacker and realized those tentacles where part of her, she did scream.
Nautilei was now a Cecaelia. Half woman half octopus. And she was still at a loss for words when a strange creature swam right up to her.
"Nauti! your awake finally. Thought you might'a got a concussion or somethin" the strange creature said more in Nautilei's mind than aloud.
"Lani!? is that you?" she asked looking at her friends new body.
Lani now had a long fined tail between her legs, and a unmistakable dorsal fin of a shark. A series of gills ran down her neck, and a toothsome grin betrayed Lani's enjoyment of her new form.
"Like what ya see?" she chided, squeezing her now ample boobs together. "Lets get out of here before old Aquaman changes his mind and kills us for real!"

Epilogue:
The girls found life at the ocean floor to be far more simple and fulfilling than their lives above the sea. And it was not long before Lani confessed her true feeling for Nautilei and they fell deeply in love. Nautalei never quite got complete control of her tentacles, and they tend to be a bit more touchy and feely than shed like, but she was happy with her new life.

Branching outwards like a large squids’, the orthocone’s ten manipulating appendages allow for unparalleled strength, dexterity, and flexibility; thanks to the kaiju’s unrestrictive invertebrate structure, the latter can be taken to an extreme, allowing Scyllorah to extend her tentacles to almost 80% more than their normal length in nearly any direction for limited bursts. The twin flanged, almost finger-like projections on each tentacle’s tip effectively grant Scyllorah ten dexterous, touch-sensitive hands, allowing her skills of object manipulation to far surpass those of even the most delicate and precise of non-kaiju cephalopods. Scyllorah can, with some effort, even use her tentacles to drag herself around on dry land.

Shearing Beak / Radula:
A characteristic unique among invertebrates, cephalopods like Scyllorah sport a heavy keratin beak designed for killing and consuming struggling prey. Bearing not one but three pointed projections apiece, the orthocone kaiju’s beak almost looks fanged, and all six projections self-sharpen as the beak articulates, always ensuring a bite capable of cutting through flesh and bones, and even lopping off entire limbs. More in common with her fellow mollusks, Scyllorah bears a radula – an array of tiny, finely serrated teeth – rooted in her throat, used for grinding up animal matter she consumes; if the chance presents itself, she’ll use it on an opposing kaiju, clamping her beak around enemy limbs and extending her radula forward to savage their flesh.

Orthoconic Shell:
Her kind’s most defining feature, Scyllorah’s soft mollusk body is built into a massive, nearly indestructible conical shell, complete with a leathery “skullcap”. Covered in innumerable hard spikes, the shell’s texture has the same effect as the denticles in sharkskin: aiding hydrodynamics and providing external defense. The shell’s sheer weight can even be turned back on attackers, as Scyllorah rams into them at full speed, her shell’s pointed tip leading the devastating charge.

Biological Ballast-Tank:
Owing to her siphuncle, an internal mass of tissue passing through the bottom of every one of her shell’s chambers, Scyllorah can dictate her swimming depth, angle, and speed with considerable precision. Taking in water through her mouth, the kaiju orthocone can fill her shell chambers with water, increasing her density and causing her to sink; through osmosis, a molecular shift in pressure, she can reverse the process and reabsorb the water into her blood, simultaneously replacing it with gases from her blood, thus reducing her density and causing her to float. Scyllorah can undergo either process rather quickly, allowing her to rise or fall in the water column with little physical strain, or to match her overall density with that of seawater, allowing the orthocone to easily move through the ocean at all depths. She has been known to use this ability offensively; her water-weighted shell sent slamming into enemy kaiju with great precision, or lightening her water load, rocketing upwards to ram into an attacker from below.

Living Submarine:
Unique to cephalopods, Scyllorah sports a hyponome, a tube-like appendage designed to rapidly expel water from her body: essentially, a biological jet engine. Forcing out massive amounts of seawater at a time, this apparatus can propel the orthocone at surprising speeds and for vast distances; purely muscular in structure, her hyponome’s thrust can be oriented in nearly any direction. Unique to Scyllorah herself is a pair of bizarre cartilaginous fins sprouting from her fleshy, partially exposed mantle; functioning much like the pectoral fins of most fish, these fins help steer the kaiju underwater, allowing her to gain or lose her bodily speed as is needed. At higher speeds, Scyllorah can even fly up into the air, using her fins to steer her rapid descent.

Multipurpose Cephalopod Ink:
Like most modern cephalopods, squids in particular, Scyllorah can release a viscous blue-black ink from sacs between her gills, which can be further dispersed when released in conjunction with a jet of water from her hyponome. Dark, foul-tasting, and quite adherent to the skins of organic and mechanical targets alike, this ink is often used as a biological smokescreen, blinding attackers of their senses and allowing Scyllorah to escape or counterattack. Elsewhere, the material is still an irritant to most animals’ bodily tissues, and contains several compounds like tyrosinase, which may actually numb or even disable certain sensory organs. If severely pressed, Scyllorah can eject an ink cloud saturated with mucus, which holds its shape as a “false body”, or “pseudomorph”, to keep attackers occupied; these clouds can actually engulf an entire kaiju, potentially fooling its allies into attacking it instead of Scyllorah. While untested, some kaijuologists theorize that her ink is also a form of chemical alarm in her species.

Kraken Toxin:
Akin to most predatory cephalopods, Scyllorah’s salivary glands produce, with help from a host of symbiotic bacteria and algae, a caustic digestive juice that can be “drooled” onto prey or “coughed” from her mouth via muscular expulsion. For more direct usage, the orthocone’s salivary glands each bear a hollow tooth-like spike, so her toxic digestive juices can be injected into a target held fast in her beak. Scyllorah frequently – and rapidly – coats her beak’s “fangs” in this digestive compound with her tentacles when she prepares to hunt or fight. Naturally, she is immune to her own toxins if ingested, but her tentacles can still be burned.

Mimic:
Simply put, Scyllorah is a phenomenal visual mimic. In methods similar to those of her tiny distant relative, the mimic octopus, the kaiju orthocone can assume the guise of several different objects and organisms by altering her skin texture, coloration, color patterns, and even some of her physical form. However, for most of her ploys to work effectively, Scyllorah must bury her huge shell, leaving her stationary body exposed above the ocean floor. She uses her mimicry to attract/hide from prey, evade/discourage predators, and confuse/evade kaiju and military foes.

Old One’s Intellect:
Easily the most intelligent of invertebrates, cephalopods have shown themselves capable of remarkable cognitive feats, such as cooperative hunting, object manipulation (unscrewing a lid off a glass jar with food inside, for example), advanced visual communication skills, and even observational learning. Scyllorah has shown to have all these abilities and then some, for she has proven to be fully capable of logical, compassionate reasoning and is therefore sentient.

Scylla & Charybdis:
Wherever Scyllorah can be found, her massive comrade Charypterus is never far away. Those who dare bring harm to the orthocone when he’s in the nearby vicinity…beware.

Weaknesses:

Volume Consistency:
As far as her tentacles can stretch, Scyllorah’s muscle volume must remain consistent, and therefore her tentacles will thin out to compensate for their increased length. Thinning out to a mere 23% of their normal width, the orthocone’s tentacles are rendered less durable and, obviously, much more easily torn or even cut off. Fortunately, they’ll regrow within a week.

Loose Grip:
As relatively primitive cephalopods, Scyllorah’s kind appears to have never developed suckers on their tentacles. While not necessarily a liability, this lessened grip could spell trouble for the kaiju when her gripping power is vital, such as when she rides on Charypterus’ back overland.

Cumbersome:
Obviously, Scyllorah is a rather clumsy mover out of the ocean. Dragging herself along at a pathetically lethargic pace, she is far from graceful on dry land. Though capable of processing atmospheric O₂, Scyllorah isn’t terribly good at it, and gasps constantly when traveling on land.

Exposed:
Scyllorah’s fins, being fleshy cartilage and skin, obviously could not be attached to her hard outer shell. To accommodate, part of her shell’s lip is retracted into a narrow, horizontal “U” shape on each side; while not a weakness in and of itself, the fact that the shell is partially reduced means that the orthocone’s vital organ-filled mantle is somewhat more exposed.

Personality:
By her cephalopod nature, Scyllorah is a rather inquisitive type. Dexterous and eternally curious, the kaiju orthocone is a frequent visitor to reefs and other visually stimulating locales, her sensitive tentacles and sophisticated brain taking in as much information as they can. Despite her predatory tendencies, Scyllorah could be considered as almost benevolent, for she rarely goes out of her way to harm others without provocation. Scyllorah is generally sociable with other daikaiju, though she prefers to keep a safe distance from larger predators. Humanity and its shining architecture are of great interest to the inquisitive orthocone; she will frequently visit wrecked cities simply to feel around the rubble, much to the chagrin of any nearby refugees. Most unusually, the orthocone appears to have a flair for sculpture: Scyllorah has been observed on occasion to collect the vertebrae of her consumed prey and arrange them on the seafloor in linear, almost geometric patterns. Why exactly she constructs these “mosaics” of bone is unclear.

Combat Strategy:
If goaded into combat, Scyllorah is a surprisingly effective grappler for her size. Entwining tentacle after tentacle around her opponents’ limbs, the orthocone will use her weight to drag them down to her level, allowing Scyllorah to bring her formidable beak, radula, and corrosive digestive juices into play. Even if her foe manages to regain its footing, she’ll maintain her grip, continuously biting and invenomating her struggling opponent. If possible, Scyllorah will take the fight to the sea, where she has the advantage over most enemies; coasting past her foe with ease, the orthocone often wraps her tentacles around them and dives, taking them for a painful ride across the ocean floor, or outright rams them head-on with her massive pointed shell. When outmatched, Scyllorah has been known to flee the fight, evidently to either lose her foe or to lure her wrathful opponent directly into the waiting claws of her gigantic cohort: Charypterus.

History:
Both Scyllorah and her counterpart Charypterus are believed to be, despite their unique physiologies, natural-borne species, albeit ones from an extremely specialized environment. Their precise ancestries unclear, it is unknown whether more like them still live beneath the ice.

--------------------

In 1959 and 1964, Russian scientist Andrey Kapitsa identified a large subsurface anomaly in the ice near the Vostok Station, a tiny Soviet observational outpost in the remote Antarctic. Later findings by Kapitsa and other scientists led to the discovery of a massive subglacial lake, approx. 160 miles long, which they later named Lake Vostok. Isolated for millions of years, and warmed from below by consistent geothermal activity, the lake showed promise for sustaining previously unknown lifeforms, perhaps forms more complex than mere extremophile bacteria.

In 1998, the multinational research team at Lake Vostok halted their ice core sampling, leaving 300 feet of ice sheet between them and the liquid water beneath; fearing contamination from the Russian’s excessive supplies of Freon and kerosene, the research team quit the site indefinitely in 2000, so the ice could have time to refreeze for later examinations. Considering the lowest temperatures ever observed were recorded at Vostok Station, the process wouldn’t take too long.

--------------------

Deep down, beneath the dark ice, two leviathans stirred. The new, pungent scents and tastes leaking in from above were…intriguing. They waited in silence, watching from the depths until the sky-noise ceased. They waited more. Nothing. Confident in their privacy, the larger rose to the ice ceiling, the smaller trailing close behind. The larger paused, compound eyes adjusting to the harsh light above the ice, and then struck out where it lay weakest. Shattered ice shards exploding in all directions, the arthropodic titan broke the surface, reached back into the deep and took his partner’s hand, lifting her up into the light.

--------------------

January 9th, 2001. The sleeping city of Vancouver abruptly awoke to the droning of disaster sirens; Canadian Forces were already filing into the streets as armed foot soldiers marched down the sidewalks alongside Humvees and APC’s in the streets. Just off the coast, three towering surges were forming, heading inland as they grew. Panicked, sleep-riddled citizens flooded the streets, obscuring the militia’s efforts as the surges revealed themselves. From beneath the waves, a trio of nightmarish kaiju, all Burgess Shale proto-invertebrates, stormed the docks and began laying waste to the cityscape. The smallest, a bony knob-encrusted sanctacarid, curled into a ball and rolled off; another, a serpentine anomalocarid with a massive head shield, slithered inland; the largest by far, a gigantic, flying opabinid, sporting three fiendish clawed proboscises, rose high and rained death down upon the cityscape. Nearly an hour of devastation passed before human reinforcements would arrive, and yet, help was already well on its way.

By the time the two leviathans had arrived, much of coastal Vancouver was in ruins. Their appetites for violence taking over, the three Burgess Shale kaiju reunited and moved in for the assault. The smaller cephalopod taking to the anomalocarid, and the larger eurypterid taking to the sanctacarid and opabinid, the invertebrate congregation suddenly erupted into a free-for-all.

--------------------

Two weeks after their close victory in Vancouver, the two fugitive leviathans, dubbed “Scyllorah and Charypterus” by the media, were sighted heading through Lake Superior, due east towards the Atlantic Ocean.

In early February, Scyllorah and Charypterus were spotted yet again, this time on the tiny Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia. Uninhabited save for five Environment Canada personnel and over 400 (now three at the most) feral horses, the two kaiju were left to live on and around the island in peace, and they have done so ever since. Well, for the most part….

--------------------------------------------------

Artist's Commentary:
So this is DOD’s resident Kraken, Scyllorah. A long way back, I designed a pair of invertebrate kaiju, an orthocone and a eurypterid, for fun and named them rather blandly as “Scylla” and “Charybdis”, respectively. Needless to say, I never had any purpose for them, so they stayed in creative limbo until recently. Since I have no other invertebrate kaiju, I decided to throw them into the mix, with a serious revamp for both in mind. The initial two names I gave them have been so overused for oceanic kaiju it wasn’t even funny, but I got creative and incorporated their old names into their new ones. Scyllorah here was always a spiny-shelled orthocone with odd-tipped tentacles, though exact details have changed with time; the mantle fins are a new feature. Character-wise, Scyllorah was intended to be a more sophisticated version of real squids and octopodes (NOT “octopi”, look it up ): curious, observant, and generally placid unless hungry, frightened, or angered. If Scyllorah was human, she’d either be a scientist, artist, or librarian, who is a bit snippy when others mess with her precious catalogued possessions. The kaiju’s shared origin story is also a big tribute to “Beneath The Dark Ice”, a wonderful sci-fi/action novel written by Greig Beck.

Artistic Notes:
— Scyllorah’s design and movements are based somewhat on the giant orthocone from the BBC mockumentary “Chased By Sea Monsters”. This one: [link] .
— Scyllorah’s beak is much like that of normal cephalopods, but has a pair of “fangs” in the lower half. These “fangs” slot into notches in the beak’s upper half when the mouth closes.
— Scyllorah’s tentacle flanges are identical to the single tips of most cephalopod tentacles. Just imagine her flanged tentacles as having “two” tips, which is essentially the case to be truthful.
— Scyllorah’s “skullcap” is vaguely disk-like in shape, and fits neatly on her head. It bears six small spikes, with the pair closest to her tentacles being the largest.
— Scyllorah’s fins project from her mantle; as a result, part of her shell’s lip is retracted into a narrow, horizontal “U” shape on each side. The retracting shape starts at the lip of her shell.
— Scyllorah’s shell is currently divided into three sections, which should be visually obvious in the image. While nearly all of her shell is rocky in texture, the shell’s lip around her mantle (the edge of the “U” around her fins included) is more or less smooth in texture.
— Scyllorah’s tentacles have no suckers; the lines across the tentacles indicate their “underside” (the side that faces inwards when her tentacles trail behind as she swims).

*First orthocone kaiju on DA!*

Only the brave dare go on.

This is a photo of a pastel drawing I did for a spring 2009 art class. I'm inexperienced with pastels, and it shows. My color application was--compared to that of another student who's been working with pastels for much longer--far too light, and consequently the blue color of the paper is too prominent and makes all the other colors appear washed out. I held back partly because I saw how quickly a stick of pastel could be worn down by just a few broad strokes on the page. In other words, I was worried about using up the pastels by applying too much pressure to the page. I tried to bring out the colors digitally by changing the saturation, lightness and contrast. I also found that for some reason the composition looks slightly better when mirrored; the original illustration faces the other way. Of course, there's only so much that changing the color channels can do to fix a picture that would look better if I'd gotten it right the first time--and it certainly won't fix all the anatomical issues.

This illustration depicts two viscerapods (Viscerapoda circumoculus, common name currently undecided) of a species in the same genus as circaens (Viscerapoda pennatus), on their home planet which I also haven't picked a suitable name for. Viscerapoda translates to "intestine foot", referring to the prehensile tentacles all viscerapod species can protrude from an opening in their body cavity. Circumoculus means "circular eye." This may seem redundant, because eyes tend to be round. However, the name refers not to the shape of this species' eyeballs but to the shape of the single eyesocket at the top of its head, which is covered on the top by a thin circular eyecap that can be raised or lowered.

V. circumoculus is morphologically, physiologically, and behaviorally distinct from V. pennatus. I will just touch on a few of the differences, mainly those relevant to this picture. V. circumoculus is a quadruped (which still has a total of six skeletal limbs) and an herbivore. While circaens have dramatic sexual dimorphism, this species is hermaphroditic. Evolutionarily, it sacrificed its ancestor's insulating layer of feathers and gained an epidermis completely covered in color-changing chromatophores analogous to those of an octopus (in circaens, only a few parts of the anatomy, such as the tentacles, have chromatophores). They communicate emotions and ideas primarily through a complex and ever-shifting mosaic of colors and patterns on their skin. The chromatophores are also used for camouflage. In this interaction, both chromatophore uses are present. One viscerapod is making a threat display which involves appearing as large as possible, baring its chisel-shaped teeth, and displaying a rippling array of intense colors. The other individual is trying to diffuse tension by assuming a submissive posture and blending in with the coloration of the nearby vegetation.

They come together as white light but for one who knows separately, they are the colours of the rainbow; for the artist these six colours unite like magic in his palette and form black.

[2 Pisces]
This friend, how would you know him? His name is a mystery but his number is that of a famous seal. How can one describe him? Maybe like the pilot of the everlasting Ark of Noah, impassive like a pillar on his white rock looking beyond the black rock towards the south.

[3 Aries]
In my arduous search I was trying to hack a way with my sword through the dense vegetation of the woods. I wanted to reach the place of the 'Sleeping BEAUTY' in which some poets can see the QUEEN of a lost kingdom. Desperate to find the way I was aided by the parchments of my friend, they were for me like the thread of ARIADNE.

[4 Taurus]
Thanks to him, from now on with a watchful eye I could make steady progress. I can find the 64 scattered stones of the perfect cube which the Brothers of the BEAUTY of the black wood had scattered when they fled from the white fort while they were being persued by the usurpers.

[5 Gemini]
Reassemble the scattered stones and, working with square and compass, put them back in order; find the line of the meridian in going from East to West, then looking from South to the North and finally in all directions to find the looked-for solution. Station yourself in front of the fourteen stones making a cross. The circle is the ring and crown and the crown forms the diadem of the Queen of the Castle.

[6 Cancer]
The Mosaic tiles of this sacred place alternate black or white and JESUS, like ASMODEUS observes their alignments. I seem incapable of seeing the summit of the secret place of the Sleeping Beauty. Not being HERCULES with magical power how do I solve the mysterious symbols engraved by the witnesses of the past. In the sanctuary however, is the font, fountain of love, of those who believe reminding us of these words 'BY THIS SIGN YOU WILL CONQUER'.

[7 Leo]
I am aware of the scent of the perfume which impregnates the sepulchre of the one I must release. Long ago her name was ISIS, Queen of the benevolent springs, COME TO ME ALL YOU WHO LABOUR AND ARE HEAVY LADEN AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST. Others knew her as MAGDALENE with the celebrated vase full of healing balm. The initiates know her to be NOTRE DAME DES CROSS.

[8 Virgo]
I was like the shepherds of the celebrated painter POUSSIN puzzled by the enigma of 'ET IN ARCADIA EGO'. Would the voice of the blood form an image of our ancestral past. Yes, a light of inspiration floods my mind; now I understand. I know now the fabulous secret and what is more amazing is that when the four knights moved, one of the horses left four hoofprints in the rock. Here is the sign which DELACROIX has given in one of the three paintings in the Chapel of Angels. There is the seventh sentence which a hand has traced: 'DELIVER ME OUT OF THE MIRE, AND LET ME NOT SINK. Two times I.S. embalming and embalmed. Miraculous vessel of the eternal White Lady of Legends.

[9 Libra]
I began my journey in shadows and completed it in the light. At the window of the ruined house I look across the trees denuded by Autumn. At the summit of the mountain, the cross stood out from the crest of the midday sun. It was the fourteenth and highest of all with 35cm. Here, then, is my knight's tower on the circuit of the divine horseman of the abyss.

[10 Scorpio]
There is a celestial vision for the one who recalls the four tasks of EM. SIGNOL around the line of the meridian; the same Choir (heart) of the sanctuary from which radiates the source of love for one another. I turn looking at the rose of P then to that of the S. Then from the S to the P until my mind is dizzy. The spiral in my mind becomes like a monstrous octopus expelling its ink, the shadows absorb the light. I put my hand to my mouth, biting my palm, maybe like OLIER in his coffin. Curses, I know the truth, HE HAS PASSED, in doing GOOD as did HE of the flowery tomb. But how many have pillaged the HOUSE, leaving only embalmed corpses and a number of metal things they could not carry? What strange mystery is concealed in the new Temple of SOLOMON, built by the children of ST. VINCENT?

[11 Ophiuchus]
Cursing the profane in their ashes and those who follow their ways; returning from the darkness while making the gesture of horror at the abyss into which I had plunged. Here is the proof that I knew the secret of the Seal of SOLOMON and I had visited the secret places of this QUEEN. Take Heed my friend, do not add or take away one iota; think and think again, the base lead of my words may contain the purest gold.

[12 Sagittarius]
Returning again to the white hill, the sky opens its floodgates. Close to me a presence, its feet in the water, like one who has just received the mark of baptism, I turn away again to the east, facing me I see unwinding endlessly by his coils, the enormous RED SERPENT mentioned in the documents, rigid and bitter, the huge, unleashed beast at the foot of the white mountain beast becomes scarlet with anger.

[13 Capricorn]
My emotions are elated, DELIVER ME OUT OF THE MIRE, immediately I woke up, my dream is over. I meant to tell you that it was a dream I had on this 17th JANUARY, the day of Saint SULPICE, but the nightmare persisted. On reflection, I wish I had told it to you as a fairytale by PERRAULT. In the pages which follow, dear reader, are the results of a dream which nursed me from the bizarre to the unknown. LET HE WHO HAS THE UNDERSTANDING USE IT WITH WISDOM.
