For each challenge we interchangeably give ourselves an idea or topic to illustrate and a short, specified time to execute it in whatever shape or form... of course, without knowing what the others are going to come up with.

This week's topic is ~washuuchan's idea: The Owl.

Unfortunately ~washuuchan couldn't join us this time because of personal reasons, but let's hope she comes back someday!

Mine is an Owl Princess and still a WIP. EDIT: it's done. But I'm leaving the old comment, as it's more fun /edit. Sorry for spamming, but thought some people would like to get noticed when it's finished

I wanted to practice painting flowers. Which was stupid. I got into the stage when I'm pretty happy with foliage (lots of custom brushes), but the flowers are still not done. Same as tiara.

I also used a ref for the owl (random google image), as I never painted one. And a ref for flowers, of course (my own). Or actually a few. And I think I based initial tiara design on some photo, but I changed it so much, I'm not sure if it even resembles it. I still don't know what got into me that I decided to paint such complicated foliage.

I'm quite happy with her owl-face. Not as much with the rest yet. But will finish it soon. Hope you'll like it!

This is an attempt on a more illustrative style.. (rather speedpaint-ish ^^) As I want to work in film industry some day (as an illustrator/concept artist or even director ) I decided to concentrate more on the individual characters and tried to tell a little story with the picture.. I hope I succeeded! ^^ Free to interprete!

This was for a brief that called for us to illustrate many different owls in varying states of stylisation, and is the most highly-polished and conventional of the final images I created.

For some reason this was very popular with both my tutors and fellow students, and after being hung in the main stairwell for a fortnight (part of our owl mini-exhibition) now resides in its frame on the classroom wall.

Little dude is meant to look all innocent like that, as if it doesn't know how evil it is.

This one took a while, because i painted the girl, but i didn't know what to do with the rest of the picture and the colors.
I'm glad that i made her really light and a little bit dreamy. The owl on her shoulder is so cute in real life. When i saw the pictures of this beautiful animal i knew i had the right element to put next to her. The background gives the feeling of a wood..

I'm painting on a new illustration. I love it, i love it.

Although this image was done way back in 2005, it still stands out as one of my best and one of my favorites.

One of my favorite subjects to draw is animals, and birds in particular like this great horned owl. I made the drawing large and detailed in order to do it justice, and it is the most complex inking I have done on a drawing to date. The color fade in the sky was actually done by hand with marker (nowadays I would just as soon use a gradient in Photoshop), and I like the way I cleverly disguised the subtle gradation through the gaps in the trees (markers dont blend very smoothly).

Overall this was just one of those images in which everything came together nearly perfectly composition, drawing, inking, and color. It shows off my full potential as an artist, which is at the same time satisfying and frustrating. As much skill and experience as an artist can have, whether or not a work is brilliant or merely good is, for the most part, completely out of their control. You can try your hardest to apply all the lessons youve learned but in the end any given piece is a crapshoot, a random convergence of elements and variables that are beyond our powers of understanding as puny mortals.

Its what makes art exciting not knowing how something will turn out until it is pieced together and given life. Its also what makes illustration frustrating when you have deadlines to meet and people to please!

This logo is (C) and TM to J. Alcontin designed by him and illustrated by myself.

A high school friend of mine worked together with me to design this character logo for his website which will cater to hentai enthusiasts (this site will have absolutely no loli/shota, FYI)

He wanted a geeky looking owl that would be cute, much like the spankwire logo girl but inoffensive and not obscene so that he could branch off the logo into other possible products and websites.

He's targeting the hipster-y crowd.

Also we love owls.

If you don't think the logo matches the presumed content then too bad I guess b/c what the client says is final and he likes it. There's nothing I can do about it.

So this has been in the back of my mind for quite a while now. I have a bit of a fascination with owls and wanted to try to create one. The book used was a bird watching manual. I didn't think it would end up being so large, but she had a mind of her own. The wing span is about 40". Each feather has been individually cut and applied. The body feathers are made from migratory maps, the wings, head, and tail feathers are made from the bird identification illustrations. There is a wire coming from the crown of the head to hang her up. I think I spent about 10 hours working, not so sure, it's hard to keep track. I'm going to try to send her a local library for a fundraising event they've invited me to participate in. I'm not sure how that will go because this really isn't my typical work. Fingers crossed they'll like her as much as I do and she'll get a lot of bids for them.
