A perfect song, for a perfect car.. Thanks to ~Line-of-Birds for suggesting it. Here she is.. the same beauty but drawn in vectors. I drew her in Macromedia Flash 8, and im yet to learn the way to blend the gradients. Somehow I managed to finish her with a descent look. This is my first full fledged digital work, which took quite sometime to finish. Wonder how you people will take me in this field. Nonetheless next is 3D.... and no.. i have no tablet or digital pen, just a crappy, lousy optical mouse.

I actually waited for this day when Ill dedicate this work to the artist whose works have actually inspired me draw cars in vectors. His art is flawless and he is the master of vectors and to master his abilities is next to impossible. Ive spent quite sometime in trying to understand the flow of his works, to understand how the gradients flow… still im far from understanding how he comes out with such neat radial gradients. Perfect..!! Im talking about none other then ~CRWPitman I simply take him as my teacher in vectors, just as I take ~Tunaferit in pencils. This one goes to you sire…

After completing Volvo i planned to submit my pencil portraits which are in the waiting for 4-6 months now. But i saw this beauty and couldnt stop myself from drawing it in Flash. I worked extra hours last night, so that i cold submit it today and here she is. Now im going back to my pencil portraits and later im planning to submit some works in Photoshop.

This work is totally dedicated to my new friend ~opheila . She is one of very few talented girls i know, who are good in digital art. Her gallery displays some extreme works in digital art and im a huge fan of her skills. Besides, she is fun to talk to and though it hasnt been long that we have met, but we talk like insane people.

I thought this will be an easy vector work, but it ended up as the hardest to date. I have never worked in so much detail before and this is simply my best vector art so far. Mainly I did this one for the headlights and shades. Detailing headlights is always a hard job regardless of the medium you are working in, but in vectors.. seriously its one helluva hard job. Hope all the vector artists will enjoy this work.

While I was making this work, someone was waiting for it to finish more then me. While I drew this work, he constantly talked about it and If it wasnt for his pushing me and wanting to see the finished work, I wouldn’t have finished it for months. So its natural that I dedicate this work to him, and by him I mean the insanely talented vector artist ^archanN It was him who contacted me a month back when he saw my Mercedes SLR vector portrait and we have been in contact ever since. He usually calls up while going and coming from work and we talk about art, DA and artists here for hours. I really enjoy talking to a mind like mine and somebody who values art and humanity attached with it. This work is totally for you dude..!! You earned it….

Have fun! This weighs in at about 910KB so you might want to make a sandwich or something if you're on 56k. I promise that this tutorial works if you can sit down and try it, and I suggest you do. I've seen so many great results and people that are now better than me because of trying my tutorial when they were first getting started. Finally! I saw this in vectors since March bubble photosession [link] , and finally I made it!
I am pretty proud of this one, because I made it only with Illustrator, usually I get really bored working with Illustrator and finishing all my socalledvector works in PS and, of course, I allways add some textures in PS, thankfully I am not so smart in Illustrator

The purpose of this set of tutorials is to help expand on any vector/vexel knowledge you may have on working from reference images. Most advice will come from working on portraits using a reference, which is why I have named it as such.

These tutorials are going to be more to do with theory work behind using references, rather than showing you a step by step tutorial. In this way, I hope to teach you how to create your own work from reference in your own style.

As it is not program based (unless specified), this theory work can be applied to either vectors or vexel, or even digital painting... and any program you use.

This tutorial will feature stock from =mumbojumbo89's stock account and can be found here. Permission is granted from her to feature and talk about this image in the context of this tutorial.

At this point I'd like you to open this deviation example into a new tab/window as I will be referring to this during the tutorial. At present I am unable to set a preview image for it, hence being loaded into another deviation.

For the sake of saving my fingers from typing, vectoring/vexelling etc... will be referred to as rendering.


The Method

There are many methods of creating a vector from reference and there is no right or wrong way... regardless of my opinion in all of these tutorials, what I'm teaching you is my preferred method. It is neither right nor wrong. So with this I will give you a little insight on my methods and then explain more as I go along.

My personal method of choice is using 5 types of layer groups - in no particular order:

A background group - a set of shapes/paths which create a background effect - not always required.
Base layers - shapes/paths of 100% opacity which are used to block out any shading/detail which may overlap a layer to be visible on top
Shading layers - shapes/paths of less than 100% opacity - usually about 5-30% opacity, which are layered upon each other to give more depth
Detailing layers - shapes/paths of varied opacity, including any line art shapes/paths, to add fine detail
Finishing layers - shapes/paths which could include vector textures, gradients, solid colour to modify the overall colour and/or look

Now don't worry too much about remembering these and what they do as I will go into more detail as I go along. In more simplified terms you could see it as a collection of low opacity shapes built up on base layers to produce an overall impression of the reference image.


The Colour Palette

Now before we start talking about layers and the methods, let us look at colour selection and putting together your palette.

One of the main reasons why you'd modify an image before working on it, is because the colours that you use throughout the rendering process, will be readily available to you straight away. All you have to do, is learn how to select those colours.

Looking at a regular stock image or say a photo of your favourite celebrity... is that it's not coloured like a render... it's made up of hundreds and thousands of colours.

Now you don't need to pick ALL of your colours for your palette straight away. In fact, I personally just pick up on colours as I go along. The beauty of using a palette is that it's there for your reference... it is the colours you want to use now... it is the colours that you have used... don't try to rush into the future and pick colours you might not even use. This is because maybe the style and colours of the render will change as you go along or even it might confuse you slightly.

Don't over complicate things. It does no one favours.

Now remembering the past tutorial about preparing the image... one of the options was to adjust the curves or smooth edge preserve or even what was suggested with Gimp. This was in order to try to make the hundreds and thousands of colours into a smaller amount... to make it easier to recognise the colours... and of course, to select them.

Where ever there is a colour in abundance in an area or throughout the reference image, this can be a colour you may want to keep in your palette to use.

The eye dropper tool is your friend... and remember not necessarily picking up the first colour is the best one. Scan around the image for colours. Why not draw the colours in shapes and compare them to each other... see how they compliment or contrast with each other.


The Base Layers

Here is a little exercise before we jump into explaining base layers.

Get 2 pieces of paper and layer them on top of each other but not entirely covering each other...

The top piece of paper will hide anything underneath it. The bottom piece of paper will only be visible if it is not overlapped. This is the concept of base layers.

Base layers are a collection of layers which are of 100% opacity. The colours of them are the most predominant colour or mid toned colour of an area or region of a reference image. They are a "base" for any shading you put on top of them and are used to make sure that no shading from the area directly underneath is shown.

So let's look at your reference image... or if you don't have one, the stock image in the example. What areas is there a large portion of?

Usually the key areas would be the hair, the face/neck area, any hair in the background, any visible clothing.

Ahhh I hear you say the eyes and lips... now it's interesting you bring these up and I will go more into these in future tutorials. However consider the lips as skin for now (as they are) and eyes merely as "detailing". Either elements are vast areas of the portrait and only take up a small portion.

So looking at the stock image, you need to look at it as if you're constructing it in pieces of paper. Which pieces of paper would be on top of the other:

The hair and the jumper are overlapping and hiding some of the face.
The face is overlapping and hiding some of the background.

So when you construct the base layers for the portrait, you'd put the hair in one layer group and the jumper in another layer group. These would be on top of the face layer group. And then all 3 of these would be on top of the background.

Let's try this with another stock example, just as practice - let's use this popular stock image by ~neebow-stock - open it in another window. Have a think about where you'd put the pieces of paper.

The hair is overlapping and hiding some of the face.
The face is overlapping and hiding some of the neck/shoulder area.
The neck/shoulder area is overlapping and hiding some of the background.


The Base Layer Colours

As previously mentioned, you colour the base layers in the mid toned or most predominant colour of an area. This is because the shapes/paths of colour you add on top of them are going to be either darker or lighter shading.

Looking at the example in this deviation, in the hair base layer... it's most predominant colour is not a mid tone. It's a dark colour with little lighter colours in it. So I'm going to select this colour.

For the skin, I'm going to select a mid tone colour. This is because the skin has a lot of shadow as well as a lot of highlighted areas. I typically get this colour from near the eye, nose or cheek... however this can vary from reference to reference. So use your eyedropper tool to find this colour from your own image.

And the jumper... now I'm going to render this image without the white in it... so I want it to mainly be a dark colour. So I've gone for a mid tone colour from the jumpers dark stripes.


The Conclusion & The Homework

This is the end of this portion of the tutorial which focuses on colour selection and base layers. If you'd like to follow along with me on this tutorial like ~nellies and other, then your second task/homework is to pick out a stock image... tell me the order of the base layers you can visualise. Or if you're feeling extra courageous, use your modified and prepped stock image from the first tutorial... and draw your base layers ready with the colours you wish to use and link me.

For those that are interested, I did this portrait without using the mesh tool and while it's not a strictly realistic approach I tried to keep it stylish while adding in some realism to keep it interesting.

Done in Adobe Illustrator CS with mostly flat colors, shape blends, and normal gradients.

Anyway, the work was to do a self portrait in vector in Adobe Illustrator (and we had to do something 'silly' in the photo).

The tools I used was mainly the Pen Tool. I used the pen tool to do everything. Yes, I used the pen tool to do the hair, I didn't use any brush for this. I used gradients in some part and gaussian blur too.

What I wanted to do in here, was it to look mine, a vector work not just like others vector work. And the way I was able to do it was to make the face (the skin) look like it was done in photoshop, with a brush, just like I love to do I did random shapes and random shapes on the face, reduced the opacity to around 5%-8% and basically duplicated a lot of times. In some parts it looks soft, and in others sharp, that was what I wanted, that's what I do

Then, the hair, it took me a lot of time, you have no idea. And when I finished it, I decided not to make it like the skin, I decided for it to look like that. The same with the fluffy leopard ears and the clothing. I also loved doing the glasses. I love my glasses, and I loved to make the reflections and the curves.

First things first. I was gonna run out of subscription in March, but my dear friend @karyaazure who has recently received a well deserved @ in front of her id, gifted me another 3 months subscription… thanks a lot Kary, not for the subscription, but for being there.

This work came without any plans. I just thought of practicing my skills at Vectors and randomly picked a car which I thought will be easy to finish. Two days of labor on Adobe Macromedia Flash and a lil harder then an easy job and here is the result. Frankly speaking I never imagined that she will come out so good. Funny thing is that I didn’t even notice which car it was… now I guess it is Merc SLR. Whatever, im loving vectors.

This work is dedicated to ~sanpaiya We are not really the best buddies, but have been in acquaintance for a number of months now. The reason of this dedication is my appreciation of his art. Im a huge fan of his art, especially of his digital works which look like traditional paintings. The thematic values, the touch up and every nook and cranny of his deviations are top notch. My style is completely different from his, yet I adore his skills and style.

The purpose of this set of tutorials is to help expand on any vector/vexel knowledge you may have on working from reference images. Most advice will come from working on portraits using a reference, which is why I have named it as such.

These tutorials are going to be more to do with theory work behind using references, rather than showing you a step by step tutorial. In this way, I hope to teach you how to create your own work from reference in your own style.

As it is not program based (unless specified), this theory work can be applied to either vectors or vexel, or even digital painting... and any program you use.

This tutorial will feature stock from =mumbojumbo89's stock account and can be found here. Permission is granted from her to feature and talk about this image in the context of this tutorial.

At this point I'd like you to open this deviation example into a new tab/window as I will be referring to this during the tutorial. At present I am unable to set a preview image for it, hence being loaded into another deviation.

For the sake of saving my fingers from typing, vectoring/vexelling etc... will be referred to as rendering.


The Shading

In this tutorial, we'll look at shading. There are several methods you can use for shading... vector blending, gradient meshing, solid layers of varying opacities and so on... I bet you could come up with more. However since I'm explaining how I do things I'm going to talk about using solid colours (non gradients) with varied opacities.

What this means is I will create a shape and then lower the transparency of the shape to maybe about 5-20% then use the same colour to build up on other areas of shadow or highlighting.

I will then go on to use a different colour - a shade darker or lighter - do do the same. With this method you still get to see some of the edges of the shapes, but it's also faded into the render you'd have to pay real close attention.

To be able to do this, you really need to be able to see where the blocks of colour are on a reference image and the whole point of these tutorials is to get away from posterizing. This is probably the most important "skill" you'll need to get away from posterizing.

After you've prepped your reference you may be able to tell straight away where the darkest areas are and where the lightest areas are. But it's trying to work out the areas inbetween that to give you a smooth transistion between which is where you need to work.

What I find a very good way to start doing a piece is starting from the biggest areas first in shadow then working onto middle ground sort of detail... as in going to some detail, but not a great amount - as in the detail required for say the highlighting on lips or the eyelashes on the eye.

The more detailed I get, I like to change the shade I'm working with. So if I'm working in the shadows/darker areas, I like to change the shade I'm using to make that area look darker. They are details because they stand out more... and this may be because they are either darker or lighter or even a different colour to each other.


The Skill

Enough talking... lets take that first leap into seeing your first shapes.

Looking at a new image can be overwhelming, so calm down and just study the image you have.
Imagine the image was in black and white... not graytone... but just 2 colours... black and white. What areas would be black and what areas would be white.

This is the first example... I've imagined what I would have as the white showing through. I've ignored the eyes for now and just the facial area.

The second example... imagine I've included ALL areas with even a little bit shadow darker than the mid tone of skin. See how big the black area is now?

The third example... imagine I've decided to only include the very very dark of the shadow into the black area. More of the white appears.

Looking at all 3 side by side, you can only see little details showing... around the nose... the left side of the face. But it's not until you put them on top of each other than you can tell the difference. This is the fourth example... I'm just showing you the outlines of the shapes I've done.

This is effectively how you think about doing the shapes... especially in the darker areas. Imagine it as two tones and draw the shapes accordingly.

So what we'll do now for the fifth example, we'll just lower the opacity of the shapes to say 25%... now you can see what the layers look like on top of each other with a reduced opacity.

Effectively what you're doing is recognising the shapes of shadow, the darker areas, certain colours... and it's this method you need to apply to creating the shapes for vectoring from a reference... and depending how detailed you want it and how smooth... would determine how many shapes you use and how much you lower the opacity by.


The Colour Selection

In the style I do my renders, I select colours from the reference directly using the eye dropper tool. In the same way I select colours for the bases... I go for colours which cover a large area for the shade, darker shade, base, highlight and an even brighter highlight... I use these to create the different areas.

The Detailing Tips

There are a few tips I want to give here to do with detailing which might be worth taking in consideration:

The lips are an area of skin, be it a slight different colour depending on make-up - but they are part of the skin. When you are shading the skin/face, shade the lips as well as you're going along. Include them into the shapes you're using. This will help them look as if they are part of the face and not an element which is just floating on the face.

Skin is not just one colour/shade... around your eyes you can find grey tones, cheeks might be weather beaten or have blusher on, around the nose might be a little rosey... a good way to blend a colour into these areas and is also good for makeup around the eyes is using vector blending or even radial gradients. Try some colours and play with opacities and colour modes.

Don't be afraid of shadow... if an area requires bold shadow or bold highlights, try to illustrate this by using much darker colours. If it doesn't look right then maybe consider using gradients to bring the harsh edge off it.

Talking about shadows... if your reference shows the inner nostril... it's dark in there... show it.


The Conclusion & The Homework

This is the end of this portion of the tutorial which focuses on shading and shapes. To test yourself and some homework, try picking on the shades and shapes of this stock image. It's a simple image, so just focus on the face and neck area. Upload it and link me it and lets see how you're going.

I go for colours which cover a large area for the shade, darker shade, base, highlight and an even brighter highlight... I use these to create the different areas.

For more details on colour selection, read back on the past tutorial.


The Detailing Tips

There are a few tips I want to give here to do with detailing which might be worth taking in consideration:

The lips are an area of skin, be it a slight different colour depending on make-up - but they are part of the skin. When you are shading the skin/face, shade the lips as well as you're going along. Include them into the shapes you're using. This will help them look as if they are part of the face and not an element which is just floating on the face.

Skin is not just one colour/shade... around your eyes you can find grey tones, cheeks might be weather beaten or have blusher on, around the nose might be a little rosey... a good way to blend a colour into these areas and is also good for makeup around the eyes is using vector blending or even radial gradients. Try some colours and play with opacities and colour modes.

Don't be afraid of shadow... if an area requires bold shadow or bold highlights, try to illustrate this by using much darker colours. If it doesn't look right then maybe consider using gradients to bring the harsh edge off it.

Talking about shadows... if your reference shows the inner nostril... it's dark in there... show it.

This is the end of this portion of the tutorial which focuses on shading and shapes. To test yourself and some homework, try picking on the shades and shapes of this stock image. It's a simple image, so just focus on the face and neck area. Upload it and link me it and lets see how you're going.

I apologize sincerely that there is no download to the source file because ever since that time where I removed a whole lot of my submissions from my page, I kept only a backup of the .png files of all of my final vector artworks but not the .ai or .pdf. Not much later after this, my crappy 2.5 laptop hdd broke down where I kept all of my source files to my artworks. The only ones I have now are the source files for those I DIDN'T remove like the C.C. vector and the Kyoya one (since it was still posted at that time).

If anyone took the opportunity to download the editable source file for this image, I would appreciate if you could email me the source file so that I can provide it here so that others can benefit from it.

Total time spent: ~5hrs
Made 90% with Illustrator CS4; 10% using Photoshop CS4

I omitted a background in order to focus more on the illustration but mostly because I was ever good with backgrounds to begin with in the first place. This one is actually the first artwork that covered more than a portrait shot of a character in all the history of my vector artwork. Had it been only a upper body portrait shot, it would've taken me somewhere between 2-3 hrs.
This artwork actually marked a milestone where I had actually improved a great deal after learning several advanced techniques from a very talented and kind vector artist I befriended not on DA, but on IRC!!

Since this is one of my better drawings, I'm actually thinking of redoing the file from scratch again so that I can provide a new, updated, and improved version of the .ai source file. Just don't expect it anytime soon. I rarely deliver quickly unless the time is just right, which is what I'm currently working on at the moment; getting the timing right in my life, which by the looks of it, seems like I still have many a ways to go

Also, I know this just needs a youtube video of how I made it to go along with it just like with my other artworks. Sorry, but I don't think I'm going to go as far as to make a video for this one since I mostly want to move forward with my newer projects since I'll be doing better content from now on. Thats not to say that I wouldn't make a youtube video if enough people complain and yada yada... ]]>

I don't know if anyone has been watching me on deskcam do this or anything... but this is my vector portrait of the ever so funny Robert Maschio aka The Todd in Scrubs.

I am a HUGE Scrubs fan... it's my favourite show and it's good to see season 5 on TV. Isn't it about time The Todd confessed he is gay?

Anyway, the story goes, when I started vexelling I did a vexel of Zach Braff who plays JD in Scrubs... and I wanted to continue with my theme of people from Scrubs... so I wandered onto Robert's website >>> [link] and I saw this image of him... it was tiny though - so I thought I would try and push my luck and e-mail the site and explain what I wanted to do and that I wanted to draw/vexel him. To my surprise, _he_ responded (at least I hope it's him) and he was more than happy to give me an HQ image of himself - the image I wanted.

So excited, I wanted to start straight away... but no... I was too nervous. How could I do a vexel of him when he knows I am doing it - this is a year ago remember.

One year later, I am now doing vector art and I am learning new things, developing new styles for myself etc... and I came across the e-mails in my old account from Robert. I thought it was finally time to vector him

I am EXTREMELY proud of this... I really am. Not just cos it's The Todd... and not because I am getting the hang of gradient meshes... but also cos I have finally vectored a suit!!! I have been avoiding them like the plague I tell you.

So here we go... it's The Todd... *vector 5* *finger snap*
