Made without special materials or tools, for under forty dollars USD. Ideal for anyone with a taste for the Neo-Victorian and with too much time on their hands. Therefore, tinkering, deviating, and rule breaking are strongly encouraged.

Materials used:
_{2 mason jar lids (detachable rings like you often see on gourmet preserves.)
tan suede leather
brass belt buckle
4 rectangular brass links
1/2-inch strip sheepshide, unshaven. Sample was cut from a chair cover
A little black oil paint
14 capnuts, 1/4 inch wide
2 wingnuts
a pack of eyelets
Grey smoked Plexiglass

This way of making a pair of goggles is perfect if you're on a tight budget, as you've probably got all you need in your house already ^_^

(edit) No longer my original, low quality photograph, now a professionally taken photo by non other than the fashion photographer Lindsay Adler! Sadly, I don't know the model's name.

Made from old camera lenses, pocket watch parts, wrist watch bezels, some clock gears, and the brasswork came from an old light fixture. Padding on the inside of the goggles comes from old leather wristwatch bands and the head strap is from an old camera case.

Also, sorry, THEY'RE NOT FOR SALE.

Steampunk goggles I made for my boyfriend.

Took about 7 hours to complete, but still needs some finishing touches. I don't have the money or the skill for using any proper equipment so super glue to the rescue!

Used two lids of candles you put on graves, some leather I found lying around, thicker leather for the straps, hinges, a buckle, some gears, clock hands, screws, a needle, thread, paint and loads of glue.

I don't want to sound mean but I get this so much I have to say it: these are just accessories, made with random stuff anyone can find from their house or local shops without visiting any special shops. The "lenses" are - like I mentioned earlier in the description - lids of sanctuary candles, one obviously can't see through them. Please, stop pointing out the "flaw" in these goggles or asking me how someone is supposed to see through them. Thank you.

The first preview of my Steampunk costume. Hat is bought on eBay but the goggles are made from scratch by me. It's the first time I've made goggles, and I was very much on budget so there are things about them I want to make better. But all in all I'm quite satisfied with them ^_^ Anyway, my character is a scientist so I'm going to make her a pair of more "scientist" looking googles later on. But everyone needs a pair of regular goggles for when going on a airship ride, ne?
If you look closely you can see a pair of earrings made out of old watch parts, but they don't show too well on this pic ^_^'
The wig and collar don't belong to the Steampunk outfit, but the wighead looked so naked without them XD

The goggles were made utilizing an old bakelite goggles set.
The center chain was removed and portions of the old goggles were sprayed with a light lacquer and dusted with brass powdered pigments. brass shelf angles were attached with epoxy to each lens.

The "eyebrow piece" was constructed of brass light pulls and aluminum rod attached with industrial epoxy. The piece was drilled and then attached to the lens via a screw post allowing the lens to pivot so they can be adjusted to individual faces or hats.

I stretched green acetate over the lens and tightened the acetate flat with a hair dryer set on low. aluminum spacers were then attached over the goggles for the final effect.

Goggles I made for my Halloween costume. Some screw here and there, gorilla glue as well. Most parts that look like they can move and spin do. Feel free to use it as a stock as well because, man, that is a creepy smile.

Parts and helpful tips:
(1) Opera binoculars.
(2) Go older! Antique shops are a treasure trove for really old watches, but be careful not to get scoundreled into paying more than $10 for a broken one. (Oh yeah, and try to only buy broken watches, old working watches are awesome and shouldn't be disassembled)
(3) Some parts were glue, most parts I put together using screws. Although you can use glue on the whole thing if you don't have a drillbit sitting around.

Bonus PROTIP: Typewriters also have some amazing parts that can be used. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH TYPEWRITERS. Everything is spring-loaded, and as anyone who has taken apart a playstation can tell you: if not disassemble properly it CAN cause some pretty bad cuts.

Bonus PROTIP again: I used Ski Goggles for a base to put everything on, it also makes it comfortable to wear. (I can wear these goggles all day easily enough)

Finally more steampunk goggles! I modeled this pair off of a crow or raven. I tried to make the feathers of its wings resemble the spokes of a gear. Its tail actually tapers into a beak, so you get two crows in one, so to speak. The lenses are purple, and the left one has a silver crow skull on it that the wearer can see right through.

My first pair of Steampunk goggles. Made from a pair of welding goggles.
Sanded the front, painted with antique gold enamel paint & sealed.
Stitched the suede type material to the rubber to cover them & glued inside.
Glued on dome nuts & little watch parts in the centre.
Eyelets put in for decoration.

Not too bad for my first attempt, i'm none too happy with the stitch & glue job

Thanks to my friend scott who loaned me his sky captain hat for this photo of the classic steampunk goggles I made and then sold at a convention.

Just an additional eye glass piece was welded onto a regular goggle lens frame, nothign spectacular but this pair turned out to be a very handsome pair of goggles. Definately have to make more classic stylized goggles in the future.

Second pair of Steampunk Goggles.

They started out as a pair of BOC welding goggles.
I've added screws to the front, on which is a clip-on loupe.
On the side is a watch part panel, in between the screws a spring made from copper wire.
The eye piece was sanded & painted with enamel paint & sealed.

This was my first attempt at making a Steampunk accessory. I looked at several online and sorta did my own variation. I did not have actually brass fittings for the body at that time, so PVC ones were used. The rest is hand cut and sewn leather, brass screws, washers, D-rings and buckles. Everything was hand made on these and took some serious time, especially sewing the leather and cutting the brass. The green target scope lights up thanks to a mini LED and each eye also is installed with their own red LEDs to light the lenses up.

I wear these on top of my kepi hat with my Steampunk Confederate officer uniform.

tutorial. Many thanks to the original deviant because I wouldn't of had a clue where to start with this. I did document photos of me doing these but only if extreme interest is shown will I post the process.. (I is lazy)

I may though do some detail shots when I get a chance.

These are suede, elbow patches in fact (my dinky town didn't have suede or leather except for elbow patches O.o) The buttons on it are some antique ones my mom had (my mom is an antique freak XD) Many thanks also to my mom and dad for helping me when I asked questions about doing stuffs.

I burnt myself on the hot glue while doing these. Blister for the win. And these took me 16+ hours, and cost at least $45 dollars probably a bit more. The plexiglass I did no have to buy my parents had some. Which that kept my cost down considerably.

I did this for a steampunk exhibition in this cute art shop (like it sells lots of artworks) and it's got all these bones and dead animal art and it looks so cool
But yeah then i liked it too much so i made the price $200 so no one would buy it!

Copic markers and watercolor, 8 hours
I colored most of the figure with markers, and went over with watercolor when I was missing a color I needed. I used watercolor for the background and marker for the cogs. I went over with a white gel pen for the shiny parts and the lace.

This was the first goggles with the flexible strapholders I made... Funny thing, It was crafted as a custom pair, but the design was so succesfull, so I decided to make it my regular.... Heh - many other craftsmen at e-bay make similar goggles with the flexible strapholders - qngyen, Ted Sweed and some other guys....Yep, they are cool...

Here is my first try at hand made steampunk goggles. I started with the pair of lenses seen at the bottom of the image. The goggles were made with scraps of leather, various wire, gears and other found objects. The blue glass lenses flip out and back independently of each other. Constructed from 100% household junk! I got the basic design from this lovely tutorial [link] but took my own path for most of it.

I used vitamin bottle caps instead of mason jar lids for the rims, the lenses are made out of some thin green plastic sheeting my Dad gave me years ago, the strap and side guards are made of faux leather (the side guards are reinforced with cardboard), the "sheepskin" is minky (it makes them really comfy), the rings on the side were stolen from an old purse, the buckle in the back is two links from an old chandelier chain, the "rivets" are Bedazzler studs with the prongs folded under, and the nosepiece/decorative-thing-around-the-lenses is copper wire.

I love these things so much I refuse to take them off! I even wore them to school!

Some time ago I did a few pages of a comic where the main character had a pair of steampunk goggles with cat eye lenses. Since then I have not been able to get the idea out of my head! So I actually made them. Actually, I think this pair is even cuter than the original. The lenses are metallic green with black pupils. But don't worry, you can see right through them when you wear them. The goggles themselves are tinted with brass-like tones, with real brass gears worked in. They measure roughly 5.5" x 3.5".

This mask has sold, but I do commissions for those interested in a similar one.

Goggles I've decorated so far.
The third ones are my The Birthday Massacre goggles cause that band is amazing (check them out!).

I bought the goggles online (I think the site was called SafetyGlasses USA) and they were about $7 each (I have two).
The decorations are foam and some is drawn on foam. The TBM one was just printed and then laminated so they wouldn't get ruined if it rained.

The beauty of these goggles is that you can just unscrew the lenses, put your own design inside, and just screw the lenses back on. You don't actually have to buy a gazillion pairs of goggles for multiple looks, just make loads of different foam patterns and change the pieces when you feel like it.

Sorry for the watermark but I'm getting really annoyed with people stealing my work from dA.

Fleeing from an arranged marriage to an elderly kohlrabi three times her age, the sheltered young radish found herself adrift in a world she never expected. A chance encounter with a villainous-looking eggplant led to her fleeing from the Watch and stowing away on the lightning-powered airship Golden Colander. Ignorant of the wider world of vegetable politics and peril, the spunky radish would have to learn quickly as she was swept up in adventure and terror among airship privateers, legions of ghoulishly re-animated potatoes, clockwork pollinators, warring empires, and of course, finding love in the stems of the handsome airship captain who had stolen her heart.

Glory awaits the victorious, but for the losers, there is only....salad.

My first attempt at any sort of steampunk work. they're still not 100%, although I'm not sure what else I can do with them...Well, I'm sure there's something. They're still a bit rough and..well, dirty looking. If you look close enough, you can see glue coming from a couple of the seams, but it's nothing I can't clean up. ;D

Anyway, the whole process must've taken around 9-10 hours, excluding the large margins of time I spent NOT working on them and or course, the painful glue-drying times. The metal sections are made mostly of old clock/watch parts with a few nuts and rivets here and there for design. The strap and..uh..eye-cuffs deals are made of leather taken from a couple of belts, and the lenses themselves were taken from some sunglasses I had laying around. Real inexpensive to make. I'd say around $10, at the most. :]

I don't generally make these to sell, but a friend was getting married and wanted a pair like mine, so I decorated these for him.... Bought them from eBay, already with the bar across the top....and I went from there.... He was pretty happy with them!

These started life as a pair of standard welding goggles.

The eye piece has been painted in brass enamel paint & sealed.
The centre is bolted together using a link off of brass chain.
The device is bolted on at the side & is what used to be the innards of a pressure gauge. Attached to that is a copper coil, which is also bolted to the goggles.
On the other side there are brass screws holding another copper coil & an old watch panel.

One of my customworks - actually to be the first goggles I sold via Ebay. Its harg do duplicate this work - too much gears to waste on one pair of goggles, and large cogs are hard to find, not to mention they are costly...

I name it Engeberg #1.

I made this as something somewhere between a mask and a set of goggles. It's based on a traditional image of Japanese oni, or demons, but with a steampunk flare. The skin is made to look like riveted steal, with cogs and gears around the eye pieces. The lense of the left eye has a large mirrored gear on on. The best part? You can see right through the gear when you wear these! The straps are black velvet, held with rivets, with an adjustable buckle at the back. This piece is completely hand sculpted and is dated at stamped on the back. It measures roughly 7 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide. The reinforced horns are roughly 2.5 inches tall.

This mask has sold, but I do commissions for those interested in a similar one.

Given the Steampunk treatment, a pair of welding goggles.
Big old clock cog on the side, as well as a little fuse, inside of which is a coil of copper wire.
On the other side there's a brass cog & around the eyepiece, brass screws.
the eyepieces are drybrush painted with brass enamel paint & sealed.
These are a bit more Dieselpunk, they have a "worn in" look.
Held together with thick vintage copper chain.
